There is idle speculation of hitting the college ranks for an OC, but I wouldn’t even know where to begin. Ore, Ohio St. And ‘Bama? Why not? They are basically pro teams who pay accordingly, but someone might want to make the jump.

I see this Season starting with lots of motion and ground attack.
Our OL is going to take time to adjust to the new system, however, a WCO should help them once Alex and the WRs get into the necessary rhythm.
Game 1, lots of Gore and Hunter, 9ers win a close one. I do expect Harbaugh to take some deep shots though, VD and Braylon will be a nice duo.

Niners have quietly been putting together an experienced staff. Mangini and Sparano are both ex head coaches, Tarver was a DC and these are not 20 years ago retreads. A lot hinges on the OC but these are solid hires.
On paper these hirings look good. Only time will tell. Many are putting a lot of emphasis on Kap’s development, that goes without saying for any QB, I think he mostly needs an OC who knows how to call better plays that allow the O-line to perform better. Every QB looks better when the O-line plays better. Ours played like shit last year. Some of that was injuries but every team has injuries. I think our biggest problem was an OC and HC playing checkers on offense while the opposing DC was playing chess.
Maybe it’s just me but I don’t see where Kap needs to do too much different than he has been doing. Very talented kid who can make all the throws, including with touch. He needs a bit more time from the O line, some more consistent play calling and to expand on his knowledge of reading defenses.
He will be less likely to be skittish in the pocket without the 330lb D linemen jumping into the backfield because the play clock is down to 1 second, mostly because of the overly elaborate 2 call system and that the DC knows to change the look with a few seconds on the clock.
Either way it is a big year for Kap. Justify the starting QB status of he will be holding a clipboard by the end of the season.

As much as I liked Fangio because of his numbers, one thing that can’t go unnoticed was his disappearing pass rush that happened so often. I didn’t want to let him go but I’m not upset about it. I’d rather put the QB under pressure and give up the occasional big play than die the slow death we did so often this year.

Better to attack and miss one big play rather than give up 15 small ones.

Our offense was mostly based on big plays. Often we would be three and out. Then if the D doesn’t get off the field they just got worn out. Our offense needed more opportunities and not going after the QB allowed the opponents O to stay on the field longer than was effective. It played a lot into our offense not scoring as much as we could have. I don’t think Harbaugh coordinated the offensive and defensive game plans to mesh as well as they could/should have. It was like Fangio was told to do his thing and RoBaugh did theirs and no thought was given to wed the two. Maybe RoBaugh was struggling so much with their own play calling they lost sight of the chemistry between the offense and defense.

Fangio made silk out of a pigs ear last season. All those injuries and A. Smith missing and on top of that an almost completely new back 4 in terms of starters. Led the league in take away’s. Not sure how much more could be expected.
It was the O that let down the D big time. ST was unspectacular too.
Needed more from the O all 4 years under Harbaugh. Just a bit more and the trophy case would need a room addition.
It is hard to say much negative about Fangio. What he did with the injuries was spectacular. Problem was the one area that is so important. The pass rush. Some games it was good and about 6 or 8 games it was non existent. When the pas rush is bad rookie QBs look great. Bad QBs look good. Good QBs look great and great QBs are standing on the sideline in the 4th quarter resting because of the blow out. Look to the Raiders game for a great example. Their drives were just clock eaters while their rookie QB had all day to throw and his best game of the year. Stats and numbers are great but they don’t mean much without pressure on the QB.

Agree about a pass rush covering a lot of sins, if you can get there with 4. Blitzing is fraught with its own risks. I think Fangio got the balance mostly right especially considering all the difficulties last year. Of course I could wish for more pass rush but all in all it was decent.
I read on other blogs where Fangio had a so, so record before coming to the Niners and that Mangini had a better record as a DC/HC than Fangio. The speculation being that Fangio benefited from the talent on D and the expectation that Mangini will do the same.
It’s a possibility and I hope it works out that way.

Another thing Fangio does that absolutely drives me batty is he blitzes and doesn’t do a very good job of covering the hot read. I remember the only time I saw Siefert mad was when we blitzed one time on Monday Night Football and Jeff Fisher left the hot read open. George was pissed. He was pacing and yelling at Fisher for minutes. I’m guessing he gets frustrated watching a Fangio defense not press the hot reads during a blitz. Yeah, we don’t give up the big play but we also don’t get off the field for long periods. By the 4th Q our D is gassed. A loss is a loss. It just feels worse when the play calling is passive.

Its a calculation Chuck. Blitz a great QB and more often than not you will pay for it. The Raider game was a mystery to me, the only logical explanation for me was that for whatever reason Donatell had no confidence with the DB’s so they played it conservatively. Problem is they got burned all game long anyway so you would think at some point they would risk more.
I don’t go to Skeebs anymore. There was too much crying and depression going on. None of those “experts” have anymore clue how the coming year will turn out than any of us “experts” but at least here we are hoping for the best and willing to wait and see. There they are all on suicide watch. It’s total drama island. Oddly enough only Bullit is near rational dealing with the changes, who’d a thunk it?
One thing Skeebs had going for for his blog is the way he does his links. Each opens in a new tab so you don’t have to navigate back all the time. You should add to your links and do the same with opening in new tabs Chuck, adds value IMO.
I’m a bit mystified by all this wailing about Harbaugh. Are they Niner fans for better or worse or Harbaugh fans? Spitty promised to follow his God Harbaugh and give up his Niner fan card, guess what, he lied. Still spouting his half assed opinions to anyone dumb enough to listen.
Harbaugh was a good coach, right man for the job at the right time and the team did well, very well. Harbaugh is gone. Baalke has put himself front and center and if the teams flops he will be gone too. Works aren’t going anywhere and that is a fact.
Lot’s of things I didn’t like over the years, firing of Mooch, Alex Smith for most of his time with the Niners, various pathetic coaches (Singleneuron top of that list) and I wasn’t shy of giving an opinion but at the end of the day that is my team first and foremost. I do what I can do, buy tickets to games, buy merchandise, talk shit with my fellow Niners fans and that is the max I control.
I’m not convinced we would be anything better than a one and done in the play-offs next year with Harbaugh back. Our play calling as pathetic as any team in the NFL. The offensive line looked so lost I was embarrassed for them sometimes. That was with an offensive staff that was reported as big as there as there was in the NFL. That probably part of the problem.
So far the changes look good to me. If they hire Kiffen I’ll be upset. If they hire Chud I’ll be happy. At least I think I’ll be happy, I don’t know too much about Chud but he is very much in demand and his current team is really trying to keep him on board. That probably means he is a good coach.
As a fellow USC fan I’m not too interested in Kiffen either Berger. Chud did good things with the Panthers. Similar style of QB. Not too interested in either of the Shannies although Jr., might have the edge for me. Not too sure who else is out there but name recognition only has so much value anyway.

12th- I made the mistake of reading some posts over there today. Skeebs used to be a good read, he is a good writer when he wants to be. These days he has lost his rational side. He is so far off base and irrational it isn’t worth the time it takes to read.
If we get a good OC I think we will be a good team next year. I wouldn’t dare say that at the hanging posse blog. A feller could get hung right quick saying something like that! A rational discussion is absolutely impossible over there. Anything other than Kap sucks and Jim is a saint is reason for being hanged. Let them blow smoke up their asses if it makes them feel better. I’ll pass.
Skeebs has his favs and when that doesn’t work out he gets so menstrual. I like his blog and writing most of the time but shit that blog is unreadable. Completely stopped going for now.
Players play and the Niners have very good players at almost all positions. The biggest problem last season was O no doubt about it but ST was bottom third in the league too.
I really feel like the Harbaugh way had just run its course. Lets see what happens next.

Classic rope a dope and misdirection. Essentially, it is “we have no idea how it happened, the balls were OK when we gave them to the refs before the game”. So, the refs get thrown under the bus, indirectly. However, if the refs say they did their jobs and both teams’ supply of balls were inflated properly when the balls left the refs locker room, then the only explanation left is that weather conditions and physics worked their magic deflation act ONLY on 11 of 12 Pats balls, NOT on ANY of the Colts balls. Too funny…

Brady said he likes the footballs at the lower end of the psi specs. Nothing criminal in that I don’t think. If we assume Luck likes it higher why wouldn’t the Pats-supplied balls carry lower pressure and probably the lowest possible and just maybe a bit less in hopes they pass the required inspection? Given a couple hours at colder outside temps they would likely fall out of specs provided the laws of physics haven’t yet been banned by Goodell.
I’d want to know if each ball was gauged and noted at pre-game inspection or just handled by the official ball guy. I find it pretty unlikely some equipment guy stuck a needle in and let the same amount of air out of eleven balls without notice.
I think the league is happy to set the Pats up to look like cheaters and have them deflecting and dancing around while they (the league) try to convince Las Vegas they’re doing everything possible to keep the game legit.
Anyway, how is this different than the “cheating” that goes on in line play every snap and DBs committing intentional fouls just hoping they don’t get caught? Why all the hoopla? Why all the attention? Who would want to focus all this media on the league right now? Wait, I know.
