Here we are at the muchly anticipated home opener at the house that Satan built, if you believe the Candlestick 49er fans that didn’t quite get the temp difference between east SF and the South Bay. Can you say 30 degrees? Thankfully, this game is in the evening so the heat (!) factor will be minimized somewhat.
Anyhow, on the the game. On paper, the Bears appear to have a pretty potent offense, what with Brandon Marshall and young phenom Alshon Jeffries to go along with their bruiser at RB in Matt Forte. They of course are led (?) by the always entertaining Jay Cutler. A guy fairly similar to Tony Romo in that they can play very good football for small to medium stretches, and then lay some big steamers when you need a win.
Thing is, what they do does present a challenge defensively for the Forty Niners. They run well behind Forte, and they have quick-strike ability with their WRs. Their weakness, like Dallas last week, is their defense. I mean really. Giving up 200 yards on the ground to Buffalo is not good at all. Which is why I think the Niners play keep-away. We aren’t going to see that first 8 plays be passes. We are going to run. Hopefully out of our 2-3 WR sets like last week. No jumbo, please.
Beyond that, it’s the opening of the new stadium. I’d love to predict a blow out, but Jimbo doesn’t seem to have that bone in his body.
I’m thinking 28-20 in another game not as close as the score makes it seem.

Kappy had a night to forget, but holy shit. The defensive effort was horrible. The pressure was non-existent. Well, that that and the 10 minute drive to open the 2nd half and then only get 3. No play action, no misdirection, back to the run up the middle and kick the ball.
After than it was prevent defense, and no pressure on Cutler. The thing about Cutler, which is true of a lot of QBs is, give them pressure and they throw bad passes. Let them stand back there for 4-5 seconds, and some one will get open. Of course the only hit was the penalty.
As the game wore on, our O line completely broke down. Iupati is not getting a contract if he keeps playing like dogshit. I thought we’d try to run a lot mpre than we doid, and Kappy had a terrible game. A couple were good plays, and one was a steal out of Crabs hands, but the fumble was just bad. I wasn’t too thrilled with all those designed runs, but Allen made the play and got the ball out. Oncew Dial hit Cutler, the game seemed to turn. Regardless of that call, once again, the Niners had to stochache ticky tacky 3rd down penalties that would have otherwise caused punts. And once agaoin, a WR is tackled on his route and gets called for a flag. Irregardless the TD taken awy from Gore on a bullshit holding call. Fucking refs are destroying a good thing. Hands to the face? 5 a game? Fuck this.

LaMicheal James, AJ Jenkins, Vance McDonald, Blaine Gabbert and Stevie Johnson – Trent Baalke is killing this football team. Vance McDonald either got hurt or Derek Carrier took over for an ineffective McDonald after McDonald dropped a relatively easy pass. LaMicheal James hasn’t been picked up by anyone. AJ Jenkins was selected by Baalke over Alshon Jeffrey. Yikes? He’s a pro?
And think about this…. Blaine Gabbert and Stevie Johnson account for 6 million of our cap money this year. 6 million? What forced us to keep Jonathan Martin over Adam Snyder? You got it, money. Jonathan Martin was a huge part of tonight’s loss. I feel like bullying that punk bitch. Anyone got Incognito’s number? Martin sucks, but if we hadn’t gotten suckered into paying 2 million guaranteed of Gabbert’s contract, we could have kept Snyder and Snyder wouldn’t have gotten beaten tonight like a red headed rented mule in the clutch, final drive of the game. That’s on Baalke. Solari can only do so much with a guy in six months.
Baalke also gutted our secondary and our special teams coverage units. So far our coverage units have been fine, but they have yet to be tested. But our secondary sucked tonight. Ward, Baalke’s first round pick, also got beaten like a red headed rented mule.
I’m telling you guys, Trent Baalke’s fingerprints are more on this loss than you guys think.

Del – Maybe you should think about switching teams. Not to get too personal, but it’s apart of the alcoholic process. What happens is you can’t handle anything and just become too depressing or toxic for anyone to stomach. The alcoholic has three choices: sobriety, insanity or death. Death is inevitable for all, but in the case of an alcoholic, he or she dies quicker from alcohol-related symptoms (like hitting a tree while dui). I could honestly see you going insane. Harbaugh was right about one thing. There are a lot of fingerprints on this one. Biggest to me was the fact that the Bears gave up on the run in the 1st half, and Fangio refused to dial up the pressure. Cutler had all day to throw, and the Niners defense wore down despite the 10 minute drive to start the 2nd half. Worse there, the reversion to 3 up the middle and FG after burning most of the 3rd quarter.
And Spitty, no offense, but you are screaming at the wrong trees, Josephine. Whining about Snyder and Ginn is laughable and fucking stupid beyone belief. They have the players to beat the Bears. They didn’t. Baalke bears about 1% of the responsibility. Kappy got picked on some bad passes and a couple great plays by Chicago’s defense. Martin played bad, but Iupati played awful. He’s supposed to be the good one. I figured we’d run more but seemed hell-bent on running Kappy.
The Kaep runs weren’t designed. They happened because Jonathan Martin and Iupati couldn’t hold the line for 3 seconds. Kaep had no time and then he scrambled. If Adam Snyder wasn’t cut in a cost cutting move, he would have blocked his man better than Jonathan Martin. Why is Snyder now with the New York Giants? Because he’s more expensive than Martin. Martin’s still in his extremely inexpensive rookie contract years whereas Snyder gets a veteran’s contract which is much more expensive. That’s a cost cutting move. Compare that to Martin’s ineffectiveness when it mattered the most tonight and that’s on Baalke. Not Harbaugh. You could argue because of cost cutting moves like Whitner and Snyder for Gabbert and Stevie Johnson that Baalke just cost the 49ers a loss.
And Fangio didn’t dial-up pressure because we jumped on them early. If you read my comments before the game, I thought for sure Fangio would have to blitz to protect our young secondary. But we didn’t really need to blitz until Kaep started turning the football over in the second half of the game. You have to have a feel for blitzing… like offensive play calling. By then, the 49ers hadn’t been blitzing all game and it would have been hard to switch gears with the youth we now have on defense. But I’m certain the 49ers would have been blitzing Culter a lot if they hadn’t jumped out to such an early lead.
That’s complete and utter horseshit, Spitty.
I figured we’d ease i to throwing more, but it has gone way over to the other side. Kappy threw some nice balls, but got caught staring a few down. If this is the new offense, we’ve hit a snag.
The problem with this offense is Jonathan Martin and now Mike Iupati. If you can’t get at least 5 seconds without pressure, your receivers can’t do much more than hooks, outs and slants. If the defense know you’re limited to underneath routes because the pressure is getting home, good DBs like Kyle Fuller jump routes, and that’s exactly what’s going on the with the 49ers right now. The 49ers desperately need Anthony Davis back, and they need to bench Iupati and put in Looney to send Iupati a clear message.
The minute Kaep gets a consistent 5 seconds is the minute the 49ers can open up their playbook and have their receivers attack vertically. Right now, the 49ers passing attack is limited due to a lack of time. That’s on Baalke.
You act like Snyder was an all-pro or something. He was a marginal backup who was decent at times. AZ’s line sucks, and THEY released him after he signed a 5 year deal.
Yes, the pass pro is iffy. Yes they are banged up. To point that solely at Baalke is simplistic and way off the mark. And your usual hysterical bullshit. We seem to have jumped the shark with the passing game. It’s all pass all the time now. We didn’t even try to run, except for those read option sweeps that are designed plays. You talk about flow on defense, the Niners never gave the run game a chance.
What game were you watching? The one big hit Kappy took resulted in a fumble. On a read-option sweep. We ran that play about 6 times for 14 yards. To say those weren’t designed means you have no understanding of the play.

Scouts said Snyder was arguably Arizona’s best O linemen that year. He was cut for the same reason he was cut here – cost and salary cap. He started there. Here, he was obviously a backup. When we cut him he was immediately picked up. He’s an obvious upgrade over Martin. Baalke knew that and went with a cheaper option.
Yes, the 49ers did run Kaep on options and sweeps (and that was a mistake) but in crunch time they didn’t call those plays and he was forced to run because protection broke down. That’s why he was running to begin with. Roman and Harbaugh knew protection wouldn’t hold up, so they ran Kaep. That was a mistake because Kaep doesn’t need to take those hits. But that’s what a good GM does – he makes sure he has the linemen to protect his franchise qb. Baalke sure didn’t do that this year.
The Trent Baalke 2012 draft class was a complete bust. I’m starting to think the 2013 draft class wasn’t very good either. I like Reid and Dial, but those are the only two making any impact right now. We should have more impact players from the 2013. And if you have two, back to back years of whiffing on picks, your organization is in trouble.
Trust me, Trent Baalke is way, way overrated. He cost us tonight’s game with cost cutting moves in the secondary and among our backup O linemen, causing Kaep to scramble for his life.
Yeah, every team is loaded with A 1 backups except for the Niners.
