Game Day!

Well, preseason game day . . .  The big news I suppose is that Michael Crabtree is starting his first presason game in 4 years of trying. My thoughts is he gets a WR screen, a 5 yard out, and calls it a day while Moss and Manningham get the bulk of the work in getting on the same page with Smith. Actually I have no fucking idea. Smith needs work with ALL these guys, and playing against real opponents is the best way to get this done. Sure, the offense practices agaisnt one of the best defenses, but back in the day when this meant something, the offense was a well-oiled machine. As of now we are getting there, but by no means is this offense hitting on all cylinders. Lots of new parts, and we are only a month away from the real shit starting up.

The sounds from camp are all good. Brandon Jacobs says he’s found his top gear, and is running with power and more speed. LaMichael James and Kendall (Endzone) Hunter are both running hard and fast. Gore is healthy, and looks to get more help and more breaks. Randy Moss is helping guys like Crabs and KW get their shit together in meetings. Even AJ Jenkins is supposedly showing speed and ability in practice. Smith? Well he says what he says, and everyone moves on. The defense? Well, the same cast of maulers is back, and things should remain excellent in this group from top to bottom. The only big change is Aldon Smith getting on the field more. It comes at the expense of Parys Haralson, so this can only be good news.

Plus, during the game tonight, we get the thrill of seeing 53 cutaways of Aluminum Mike Singletary as he tries to keep his pants on during the game. He’s back down in the trenches as a linebacker coach, so he’s back at ground zero on his quest to be the best head coach of all time. Good luck there, Mike.

As for me, I’m heading for the mountains today. A  little fishing, a little dirt biking, a little 4 wheeling, and a lot of hanging out. My son starts school in a couple weeks, so this is the last hurrah for the summer. In other words, I’ll see you guys Sunday night. I’m taping the game, but I’ll try to listen by the lake . . .

  2. Kevin's avatar Kevin says:

1st preseason game Smith will play 1 maybe to series. and then the starters are out. no team wants to risk injury in the preseason. so the well oiled machine will get going in the last two preseason games, not the first two

  3. snarkk's avatar snarkk says:

The first teamers will get what, one series? Two, at most. Four preseason games is a joke. 3 at most, and have a first cut before the first preseason game. The coaches know in camp who’s gonna be first cuts. Anyway, from college land, the “Honey Badger” has been stung…http://www.sfgate.com/news/article/LSU-s-Mathieu-kicked-off-team-for-violating-rules-3778473.php

78 yard td run? Did it look as good as it sounds?

    • Grant Cohn:

6:47 Colin Kaepernick and LaMichael James are in with the first-team offensive line.

6:49 Kaepernick lined up in the shotgun and fakes a handoff to James. The entire defense followed James to the left, while Kaepernick kept the ball and ran to the right for a 78-yard touchdown. We thought the Kaepernick-James option play could be deadly, and it just was. 14-6 Niners.

6:53 The Niners went no-huddle before that run. Considering this is the preseason, it’s no surprise that a read-option play caught the Vikings by surprise.

Missed the game with visitors but listening to the replay now.

  9. There’s no vanilla in this grab bag of goodies on O. Roman’s pulling all kinds of shit out with this game pan. See above. E Davis sez

Dobbs is having a monster game against Minn 2nd stringers

    • phil fan's avatar phil fan says:

7:52pm The Vikings just double teamed Dobbs on first down.

7:56 On third and seven Dobbs beat the left tackle once again and forced Webb to flee the pocket and throw the ball away.

7:57 Prediction: Demarcus Dobbs will make the team.

The Niners had 198 rushing yards and 50 passing yards in the first half. Sez G Cohn.

    Knute Rockne would be proud

Bonehead Goldson at work: from Maiocco

“DEFENSIVE MIXUP: On the Vikings’ second play of the game, quarterback Christian Ponder hit wide receiver Stephen Burton on a deep post beyond cornerback Carlos Rogers. The play went for 52 yards. As soon as the play was over, Rogers had a discussion with safety Dashon Goldson, who left the middle wide open when he bit on an underneath route. “

  13. Max caught a 3 yard pass in the 5 snaps he played. Jenkins made two great catches and dropped 2 easy ones.

Some fans are saying JJ gets waived rather than expose Tolzien to waivers, he looked that good they said. I dunno didn’t see any of this game

  14. phil fan's avatar phil fan says:

We know Goldson is a moron as seen above; blown assignment. Vikes or no that is our man Goldson. We know hurry up + misdirection to James with CK running out of the spread can gain yards in this case a 78 yd TD. We now know the coaches, Roman, are willing to call this play and will again. We now know Jenkins can make the tough catch. Del Mar had no clue on this.

True the outcome was never in doubt except for the second play for Vikes 52 yards over Goldson’s head. Yeah he made it interesting for a minute there.

  15. Grumpy Guy's avatar Grumpy Guy says:

Dobbs is a natural pass rusher. You can never have enough of those guys.

  16. 12th man's avatar 12th man says:

I don’t get why they want Dobbs as a TE unless they are going with 2 and use Dobbs as emergency or for jumbo package. Dobbs is a solid pass rusher just as you say Grumpy. Rueland looks good as the third tight end. Bakhtihari had a decent night too.

Lots of good depth all of a sudden and a ton of draft picks next year to boot.

  17. Good questions. Fact is we really don’t know too much about how JH and Co. will coach and build a team at this level. Last year on short notice they pulled a rabbit outta a hat, surprised a lot of people. This year we’re seeing a deep WR corps + QBs, deep RB corps and like 6 guys playing TE. Harbaugh’s scheme won’t change but damn we got a lot of weapons and D depth

  18. Grumpy Guy's avatar Grumpy Guy says:

They are going to go with 2 TEs, I think. At the very least, on game day.

Remember you only have 45 on game day. So having your third TE be the same as your 5th or 6th DL means he is active. Same with Tuku as a backup FB. It’s all about getting the most options you can out of your 45 active players.

  19. Grumpy Guy's avatar Grumpy Guy says:

Well we might have just lost Delanie Walker to a TC camp injury. So now it’ll likely be VD and Rueland, with Dobbs active as the 3rd TE, until / unless Delanie comes back.

  20. phil fan's avatar phil fan says:

Soon as Aldon got hurt in the game I thought- Now it starts; we’re gonna have a rash of injuries this yeah. Football gods simply will not allow us to have another relatively injury-free year. Hope I’m dead wrong but so far no.

  21. phil fan's avatar phil fan says:

“Random, shirtless fan runs onto field. Guy runs right up to Harbaugh, who has to use every ounce of self restraint to not punch him out.” ( from Bee-rows)

Fuck Del Mar double up dem meds man

  22. Alleykat's avatar Alleykat says:

Well I watched most of the game, and I would have to say Tolizen looked sharp, good decision making, quick precise reads, couple sure drops by the rookies,Jenkins,Palmer which would have been big gains, especially Palmer’s.
No way you keep 4 QB’s,and im sure we will see more reps for Josh Johnson, but it sure gonna be some tough decisions down the line.Smith and Kappy or locks of course, and Tolizen and Johnson both have NFL experience, just have to wait to see how the chips play out.Practice Squad for the odd man out possiblites?

  23. Nipper's avatar Nipper says:

Injuries will be key for the Niners. Stay healthy and they win big.

    • Nipper's avatar Nipper says:

Preparation is a strong suit for Harbaugh teams. That should give them an edge when it counts.

    • Alleykat's avatar Alleykat says:

Injures are a key for us bloggers as well Nip,long season is ahead for us all, have to loosen up the drinking elbow slowly to get maximum effort as the season progresses.

  24. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

AK, the only one oligible for the taxi squad is Tolzein. JJ has too much NFL experience. I think they may just cut JJ to make sure they can keep Tolzein if it plays outr the way is appears so far.

    Tolzein looked good yesterday.

Flav, the run was pretty cool. It came on a no-huddle. and Kappy made an excellent fake that the entire Viking defense bit on. When Cappy got past the line, there was one guy to beat, and Cappy stiff-arrmed him 50 yards downfield. Dude’s got LONG arms . . .

If they can make him semi-fuctional as a passer, he;s got a huge upside. Thing is, he ran a very simplistic passing offense iat UNR, so he has a pretty steep learning curve still.
