There are apparently no hard feelings in the wooing of Peyton Manning and subsequent fallout to our own Alex Smith. But, whatever. Alex got his deal, the Niners have their QB, and Denver now has unrealistic expectations to try and live up to (with a QB who very well may not ever play a game for them). So, now that the 49ers have signed their QB, signed a few WRs, and kept their defense pretty much intact form last year, the focus will now be on he draft, and maybe an OG and KR to sign. The 49ers still haven’t replaced Adam Snyder (the Schwartz went to Deetroit) and they still haven’t really addressed the KR spot. Ted Ginn hasn’t signed, and Kyle Williams, with the addition of Randy Moss, Mario Manningham, and Perrish Cox (may be a KR), looks to be a guy without a spot.
I’m sure the Niners have their eyes peeled for an impact offensive guy like Coby Fleener from Stanford. He’s a big red-zone target that would complement the team nicely. There’s also Dontari Poe, the huge DL who dropped a few jaws with his 4.8 40. his value shot up the draft board amidst the questions of his heart and motor. You also have to wonder if the Niners would look at an RB to spell/replace Gore. Hunter is fine, but he’s more of a scat-back/change of pace guy. They may want to get someone like Davis Wilson from VT. he’s 206, but runs with power, is quick to the hole like Gore, and catches the ball well. Dixon doesn’t seem to be wowing any of the coaches, so I wonder what his status will be this coming season.

Philips turned out to be devastating as he was the guy who missed the block on Aenis Williams that ended Steve Young’s career.

Saints Scandal…….I’m surprised Payton wasn’t banned for life for lying and telling other coaches to lie about the bounties. If he lied to Goodell or mislead his inquiries he should be run out of football. It’s bad enough when players fail to tell the truth let alone guys in leadership positions.

As far as bounty-gate goes, this was a direct attack on all the safety shit Goodie Goodell has been pounding into these owners, coaches and players for years now.
It made him look bad. Worse yet, it made him look like a a paper tiger. I figured he’d come down hard. I didn’t think this hard, but that’s the deal. If these guys haven’t figured it out yet with the fines for hits, penalties, and such, they never will.
When he has a policy where he can punish people for legal off field activities that- horrors- create bad publicity for the National Goody Two Shoes League; he’d better come down hard on a practice that should actually mean serious jail time for the offenders..
I’ve got no issue with the Goodell punishments. He came down hard because they only had the bounty program, but more importantly, they lied to him about it, and kept going. It’s obvious he’s doing this and all the related “safety” rules because of all the current and future lawsuits the NFL faces re: brain injury…
BTW- the guarantee for Smith is really just 9 miliion, evidently. That would be what he gets if he’s released after year one. If he’s here for year two, the guarantee is 16.5. So if he performs poorly( or they just think they want to begin the Kappy era), they can get out of it on the cheap. In baseball terms, it’s essentially a one year deal with a club option for 2013.

Ginn had a PR and a KR TD in the same game last year. He’s fine.
Peterson didn’t return kick offs, only punts. Ginn was 3rd in punt returns, 4th in KO returns( by average yards per return ). Ted WAS the premier return man in the league.
While Ginn is no Peterson he’s also no Kyle Williams. Closer to Peterson IMHO. But yeah lacking him at PR we don’t go to the dance. Need depth there. Remember how thin we were at KR, PR under Singletary?
