The couple that can’t seem to extricate themselves from each other carries on for another 3 years. Through trials and tribulations, good or bad, ill will or happiness, the marriage goes on. Word is, Alex Smith and the 49ers agreed to terms on a deal. it’s somewhere near the original 3/24 that was on the table before free agency started. So, it’s back to the future, same as it ever was, tried and true, time tested, whatever cliche you’d like to insert.
My guess is that by the time OTAs roll around, all will be happy happy in Ninerland. The dalliance with Peyton Manning will be a distant memory. Especially if Manning tweaks his nack gettting out of bed one of these days. Smith now has a WR corps that is MUCH better than in recent memory. The line is solidifying nicely (especially if the Schwartz is with us), and we still have a draft to negotiate.
So, signs are looking good for the upcoming season. All these hurt feelings and squashed prides will all be forgotten and shit will be good once again. Well, until that first Alex pass hits the ground uncaught.
Party on, folks.
Well, they got the best QB west of Burlington, Colorado… now I’ll be interested to see how the relationship plays out. I’d think Jimbo will be a litlle shy at first, Perhaps coffee, a group get together, later a film, some light petting.. it’s gonna take awhile before Alex..well, let’s just give them some space, they’ll both need some “coaching up” for the magic to return…
I can sleep better now.
Cue Peter Gabriel
“In your eyes, the light the heat . . .
In your eyes, I am complete . . . ”
I see a boom box in Jim harbaugh’s future . . .
Well okay that was my original thought- he’s stayin’. But if a man ever had reason(s) to walk it is one Alex Smith. The shit he’s been through around here…un-fucking believable. Gotta admire his gumption fer stickin’ around this fuckin’ madhouse of a franchise. Whether fans, coaches or GMs appreciate it or not this guy coulda hoisted his middle finger Loooong agoo. Taken his 40+ mil and hit the beach with the 12 -NO the 15 year old rum- and his babe of a wife like I woulda done did.
BTW Chuck, on a lighta note, thanks fer posting that picture of his wife a while back…sweet…
All hail the 49er QB, the future OC, HC, GM and future team ownah of the La Jolla Smythes!
With the way this all went down, I would have to say that the Niners must feel pretty confident that Kaepernick is going to be their next starting QB. The Niners didn’t really bat a eye over losing Manning and didn’t appear to be too concerned with losing Alex. So IMO Jim feels very comfortable with Kaep as the #2 guy, and would have had no problem if he turned out to be the Starter.
Yeah, Kevin. It looks as though the Niners were perfectly fine with going to JJ if Smith bailed.
But, as has been repeated early, late, and often, this is was and will be the best fit for Alex. BUT, the Niners felt good enough about Cappy that they didn’t want to go big on a contract with Alex.
Yeah, that is the other thing, Niner coaches and management knew that A Smith was not a hot commodity, even after last year, Smith has been in the league 7 years and last year was the best one. 1 great year does not make a great QB, especially when the other 6 have been mediocre. Alex just did not see it, until he went to Miami, and then no other team contacted his agent.
The other 6 were astoundingly good, considering the coaching staffs. An 80+ QBR in the Raye offense should get him in the HOF..
True, but other teams don’t look at those numbers. this is what they look at
2005 4-12
2006 7-9
2007 5-11
2008 7-9
2009 7-9
2010 6-10
I am not saying this is how a QB should be evaluated, but the truth is, this is what HC and GM look at.
16m guaranteed will help soothe any hard feelings.
If they were that comfy with Kappy, they wouldn’t have signed Alex at all. And certainly not with 16.5 guaranteed. That’s a ridiculous assertion. They upped the guarantee by 6.5, They would NEVER do that if they were fine with him leaving now.
They weren’t concerned with losing him after losing Manning? Yeah, that’s why Harbaugh was “mending fences” within hours of Alex leaving Miami. Regardless of the niggardly contract and the HOPE that Kappy will someday be an NFL starting QB- Alex will remain the QB as long they continue to have success with him..
Room B: “niggardly” is not a racial epithet…
Alex is in his prime years. Of course they’re going to use him.
Payton suspended for a year. Ouch!
Tebow to NY.
Where’s Dennis?
Test
You passed!
Fricking wordpress is acting up today.
Twin, if the Niners were ‘deeply indebted’ to Alex, they would have offered him a 5 year deal. As it is, they hedged their bet based on the fact that there was little interest outside 4949 Centennial Blvd. As I said they would, they sweetened the deal over the Matt Flynn contract, and goosed the guaranteed money nicely. In the end no harm, no foul. Of course Harbaugh sought out Smith after Manning bailed. If Smith had bailed, he would have sought out JJ. That was the order of preference. Smith is a big boy. He’s not going to hold this grudge til his contract runs out in 2014. In the end, the song remains the same. Cappy waits until:
A) Smith wins a Super Bowl or two, and the Niners deal Cappy to a QB-desperate team, or
B) Smith doesn’t quite live up to expectations, and the Cappy show gets some traction midway through 2012 or 2013 and they move on from Alex.
As the ball turns……er….spirils….
Teblow to the J-E-T-S . . . for a 4th and 6th rounder.
Funny thing is, that Jet locker room is already a fractured bunch. Adding a QB controversy if Snachez staggers out the gate would be more fuel to the fire. Sanchez isn’t exactly exuding confidence based on his last season. Now he’ll be looking over his shoulder as the Teboneheads come out of the woodwork.
Jets are determined to get a lot of press and media coverage.
They didn’t give Sanchez more money to compete with T-Blow. They’ll just use him as gadget player for a few plays a game, not even Ryan is stupid enough to think he’ s a QB…
Now here’s something I didn’t know- Manning is NOT healthy yet- and that comes from him. It’s why he gave the Broncos a break on guaranteed money- only 18 million is fully guaranteed. He also has taken pains to refute the statements from those who watched him work out, that he threw “great”. He did not throw great- everything about his neck and arm health is still up in the air, he is HOPING that the strength and nerve issues are resolved.

Why are you putting “deeply indebted” in quotes as if I said it? Fact is they don”t bump the guaranteed money to him if they are ready to let him move on. Remember, pal, as all of you have been so happy to point out, this a cold, impersonal business. Business men don’t shell out 6.5 million when they don’t think they have to..
Johnson? Yeah, they were totally cool going with a guy with a 57.7 career QBR over 3 years. Fact is, they had no leverage either, if they hoped to win this year. Once Manning turned them down, Smith was the only QB they thought they could win with now. That’s why the offer was still on the table, and that’s why upped the guarantee.
No, he won’t hold a grudge now that he’s signed. He’s smarter than that, he’ll just play better than last year.
“the Cappy show gets some traction midway through 2012..” cool, 16.5 million for 8 games. Sharp, tough operators, those Yorks…
Both sides, as I’ve said a million times, are meant to be together. Neither side had much of a leverage advantage over the other. The fact remains though, the Niners did NOT want to go 5 years, and they didn’t. And, like I said, once Flynn signed, they were going to beat that deal.
If Smith flames out this year, you know they’ll turn to Cappy. I don’t think it happens, but it might.
If Sanchez comes out flat/uninspiring, there’s going to be enormous pressure to get Tebow in there at QB. It’ll be a freak show of epic proportions. It’ll make Denver look like a sneeze in the breeze . . .
The 5 years is not something that’s been an issue anymore. Why keep bringing it up? The bottom line is now the extra 6.5 million in guaranteed money- if they were fine to go with Kappy, or Johnson, they would never have done it. And that is not conjecture in the context of the “this is a cold tough business” blather. According to most here, they had him by the balls- if they are so cool with the Kappy era- they tell him to take the offer as is or hit the bricks.
Another factor-the guy’s rich, and doesn’t appear to care much about money, as he puts
most of his salary into his foundation. Unlike most players,he could be a guy who would walk away…
Well, he didn’t walk now, did he? Whatever, Twin. Keep tilting at the windmill that everyone should bow to Smith’s abject greatness.
I’m looking forward to a better season. Super Bowl or Bust. Smith has much better weapons around him now, and we haven’t even hit the draft. If he doesn’t drag this team to the Super Bowl, then the season is a failure. Crazy how fast expectations have changed.
As usual, you completely mischaracterize what I post. I have never said anything more about Smith’s abilities as a QB other than he’s a good QB…
The fucking point about him being a guy who could walk away from the madness is that I think they know that.Yes, it’s fucking conjecture, just as all OPINION here is.
Manning had to take them to the Super Bowl. Smith just has to get them to postseason. He does that every year, Kappy will be the QB here by about 2020…
I’m sick of getting shit for supporting Smith-I make thoughtful, valid points. If they are minority opinions , so be it-suck it up.
To hell with expectations. I just hope the injuries will be to a minimum.
Well, Twin, why shouldn’t Smith be held to the same standard as Manning would have been? After all, it was Smith that got them to the NFC Championship game, not Manning.
I WANT the guy to be successful from here on out. He had a great year last year. But the bar has been raised. Getting to the playoffs is all well and good, but it ain;t enough.
Chuck always wants more!
Remember, they got to the NFC championship DESPITE Alex,..and he can be held to the same standard as Manning as soon as they pay him 90 million plus.. they’re giving him 7-9 money. The postseason is a gift..
BTW, what’s with the Red Zone? Seems like the HC fucked that up- Alex was best in football last year (2011), what’s Jim’s deal?
I just heard from a friend of mine and in the contract, Manning will have to pass a physical every year. That is huge.

He’s not healthy now, that he will be is based on hope.
Hope, hype, horseshit, waddevah… Manning we won’t miss you guy
With Spit banned here and @ Skeebs and Dennis AWOL I nominate myself as the contrary indicator- just assume the opposite is true:
-Goldson will be gone
-Smith leaving
-Gore washed up
But this is fun, and cheap too
I miss the inebriated one!
