Free Agent Frenzy

I know it’s early to be thinking about this, but hey, it beats thinking about the Super Bowl . . .

This is a list of free agents that the 49ers currently have.

Tramaine Brock RFA CB
Ahmad Brooks UFA LB
Blake Costanzo UFA LB
Ted Ginn UFA WR
Dashon Goldson UFA S
Larry Grant UFA LB
Josh Morgan UFA WR
Moran Norris UFA RB
Chilo Rachal UFA OT
Carlos Rogers UFA CB
Reggie Smith UFA CB
Alex Smith UFA QB
Adam Snyder UFA OT
C.J. Spillman RFA S
Joe Staley UFA OT
Will Tukuafu RFA DT

I think we can safely say that Alex Smith gets signed. Something like 3 years/24 mill.

There are a lot of guys on that list that should be signed. There are also guys who can hit the road. Chilo Rachal and Moran Norris are obvious candidates.

Guys like Tukafu, Brock, Spillman, Grant, Reggie Smith, and Constanzo shouldn’t be too hard to bring back into the fold. They are solid backups, and should stay here.

The big names are Ahmad Brooks, Ted Ginn, Dashon Goldson, Joshua Morgan, Carlos Rogers, Adam Snyder, and Joe Staley.

Ahmad Brooks had a solid and very consistent year. I have no idea what he wants, but he was a fundamental piece of one of the toughest sets of LBs in the league. Try to keep him. Ginn? As we saw with KW recently, Ginn should stay, if only as a KR/PR. His opening game heroics set the tone for the great season special teams had all year. His WR skills are awful at best. Goldson? Well, I think the Niners make an offer, but I think he’ll move on. He’s wildly inconsistent, and lacks game awareness. He is a liability in coverage. I keep thinking they’ll move him to SS, but they have Whitner now, so there’s no room. So, he goes. What likely happens is Culliver moves to FS. Morgan was putting together a very good year til he got hurt in garbage time vs TB. If he comes back at full health, keep him. If only for continuity’s sake, as the WR corps is likey to turn over greatly. Rogers on the other hand, should be given a key to the city. He solidified what was a shakey deefensive backfield upon his arrival here. He may not be the fastest guy out there, but his savvy and skills kept him in position most every play. Snyder and Staley? Their health seemed to determin how well the line played. When either of these guys went down, the line play as a whole suffered greatly. So, sign them.

I’m not sure what the front office’s thinking is going forward, but I’d like to think they are of a mind to try and keep things pretty much the same as this recently concluded season.

Have great confidence Harbaugh/Baalke brain trust will get the players we need to strengthen the offense. Haven’t felt that way for 10 years or so. I’m thinking they get 2-3 WRs and also a couple RBs either through draft or FAs. Prolly need to replace Rachal and Norris, agree

  2. snarkk's avatar snarkk says:

Why was Brock thrown into the Giants game instead of Spencer when Brown got knocked out of the game? Was Spencer so far in the doghouse that he can’t come out under even emergency circumstances? Eli zeroed in on Brock and threw the TD on him that killed us…

    • phil fan's avatar phil fan says:

Excellent point snarkk. Man what did Spencer do? Propose to Harbaugh’s youngest daughter? I don’t get it.

One thing is clear- we will NOT get 100% good decisions from any coaching staff including Harbaugh’s. Yes that killed us, so LOWER yer expectations people!

  3. snarkk's avatar snarkk says:

Phil, this is a little late, but you don’t have to invite me to your pity party for TO. You go ahead, I won’t be offended. BTW, don’t invite Jeff Garcia, either. He won’t RSVP. He and TO kinda had a dustup a few years back, something TO implied in Playboy about Jeff’s sexuality, or some small matter like that…

    • phil fan's avatar phil fan says:

      Ok fair enough snarkk.

Yeah I kinda remember that and I really wish Owens woulda STFU right then. It only got worse from there for everybody. Agree, that’s on TO

Sometimes I guess the answer is to STFU!

  4. Flavor's avatar Flavor says:

If I only get 5 of them, here are my 5 in order of importance:

    1) Alex Smith
    2) Staley
    3) Brooks
    4) Rogers
    5) Morgan
(and C0stanzo, just cause I like him and he’d be super cheap)

No to Dashon G. No Ginn. Maybe Snyder. That’s it.

  5. snarkk's avatar snarkk says:

    My top picks:
    Brooks
    Staley
    Rogers
    Snyder
    Goldson
    Morgan
Alex can stay or go, I wouldn’t care. Jason Campbell would be a decent alternative, probably better under Harbaugh tutelage. Upgrading the WR corps is absolutely necessary. Here’s the FA QBs — other than Brees, a pretty bland bunch IMO.

  6. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Yikes. Shit, they are better off with Smith that anyone else not named Brees. But you knew that.

Yeah, I don’t know what happened with Spenser. He vanished. Same with Braylon. Once in the doghouse, there was no way out. Some weird shit behind the scenes, I’d guess. But you can’t argue with the results.

  7. snarkk's avatar snarkk says:

Seely was supposed to get an interview with the Colts for the HC job, but that got nixed when the Colts today hired Ravens’ DC Pagano as their new HC. I find it interesting they didn’t interview Roman, since he coached Luck for two years at Stanfurd — that would seem a natural type of relationship to exploit. Could the Colts actually be thinking of NOT taking Luck? I can’t imagine it, at all…

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor says:

the players at Stanford didn’t really dig Roman. I think he must be more of an X/O guy. Plus, Harbaugh was the one doing a lot of the work with Luck…..

  8. Flavor's avatar Flavor says:

I’d sign Alex for 2 years but I’d rather not go 3 if Kappy is doing what I hope he’s doing under Master Harbaugh’s teachings over the next year or two.

  9. snarkk's avatar snarkk says:

I’d go 2 years and option, max, on Alex. He just is not that good, but the alternatives at the moment are similar or not much better.
If this defense wasn’t damn Super Bowl worthy, the team is 9-7 or 8-8 and not in the playoffs, and everybody is still on Alex’ case…

    • Flavor's avatar Flavor says:

Alex had no one to throw to all year (besides Davis). And he still had a very good, productive year. GIve him a couple of receivers who can separate AND catch the damn ball and you’ll see some more growth there……

  10. Flavor's avatar Flavor says:

Kawakami says to trade Kappy to move into top 15 of first round in draft and pick up Floyd from Notre Dame. Bold idea. I kinda like it.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk says:

Why would anybody give a top 15 pick for a 2nd rounder that hasn’t played? Unless you throw somebody else in with good value. I wouldn’t do that. I want to see Kaepernick play, he’s got some tools, and under Harbaugh, might become something. IMO it won’t take much for somebody to overtake Alex. Alex prospered this season because Harbaugh put him in a system straightjacket to limit his turnovers. That is clear. Get somebody else that can make plays without creating a ton of turnovers, and that guy takes over the job…

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor says:

you give up your 15th pick, get Kappy and get our pick at the end of the first round……

      • snarkk's avatar snarkk says:

No way I do that deal, unless Baalke and Harbaugh think they made a mistake taking Kaep…

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor says:

I’m not saying I think it’s a slam dunk, just that it’s intriguing. And there’s nothing about Kappy that says “can’t miss”. If you think there’s a “Dez Bryant” (minus the insanity) in the middle of the first round, I’d probably trade Kappy to move up and sign Alex to a 3 or 4 year deal.

      • Flavor's avatar Flavor says:

and when I said “Dez Bryant” that was just the first name that popped into my head of a young, current receiver who is an impact guy who got drafted in the 1 round. There are obviously other examples. Good luck getting that guy’s head straightened on right, though……

  11. Flavor's avatar Flavor says:

regardless of what you think about this dude, if you listen to this post game speech by Ray Lewis 3 or 4 times you can’t help but want to follow this born leader on the football field……

  12. Alleykat's avatar Alleykat says:

I’ll tell you what happened to Spencer…He was not added to the playoff roster fot both the Saints and Giants game.So tough to help out when your not suited up.So yeah you can add him to the list Chuck for one who won’t be back.

And Norris ,Rachal, and im sayin Ginn won’t be back, they will either go FA sigining or draft a WR/ return guy.

Yeah, if any of those bigger guys can motor then give them a look. Not that 40 times are the be-all end-all, but the Niners need someone who can consistently stretch a defense. The only one doing that last season was VD. Ginn kept losing balls in the lights and letting them clank off his flippers.

Jarius Wright, for example, isn’t big, but he’s blazingly fast, he ran a 4.27 40 as a junior, and has great hands. I’d take a shot in the 4th.

Randle’s a possible 2nd round pick. Dude has a big upside. Sanu likely is gone. He’ll go in the 1st round. The rest i haven’t really heard of. Except for Jeff Fuller from Texas A & M. His dad of course is SS Jeff Fuller . . .

Here’s an old article about Jeff Fuller now, and it makes you understand why the players loved Eddie D.

  16. Alleykat's avatar Alleykat says:

Niners could easily dump both Rachal and Snyder if they could land FA Guard Carl Nicks. The dude is awesome at both run blocking and pass protection, had only 2 penaltys called against him all year, only 27 as well plenty of all pro years ahead.

  17. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Snyder is pretty versatile. He won’t cost too much. Rachal’s days are numbered.

    • Alleykat's avatar Alleykat says:

Chuck…..As Oddball would say What’s with the negative ways Moriraty. Carl Nicks is All PRO best Guard in the league. He’s a FA which the Saints probably can’t sign cause they have to slap the franchise tag on Brees. He is a local guy born in the City.He might want come home with alittle nudge ftom his old teammate Goodwin .Many experts are saying he’s leaving.

  18. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

I think Sanu is the only WR remotely considered to be a can’t-miss 1st round WR. He won’t last, so he’s out.

    After that, it’s all a crap-shoot.

Odds to win the 2013 Super Bowl — Vegas Hilton Sportsbook:

    Green Bay Packers 5/1
    New Orleans Saints 6/1

    Pittsburgh Steelers 12/1
    Philadelphia Eagles 12/1
    Baltimore Ravens 12/1

    • Alleykat's avatar Alleykat says:

Snarkk….Who’s smoking the crack pipe in Vegas.Jesus the fuckin Niners still get NO RESPECT LIKE RODNEY DANGERFIELD.And how in Hell can the Eagles and Texans be ahead of us? Fuck why not put the Broncos,Rams,Vikings ,Colts ahead of else as well.

  20. Flavor's avatar Flavor says:

All those odds suck. Future bets are stupid. But looking at this, of what’s offered, I’d probably wager some dough on Houston. QB comes back, excellent D, they could do some major damage next year. So could the Niners at 20-1 if they bring most of their FA’s back and get a receiver or 2. But make no mistake about it, next year is gonna be a grind. Take a look at our schedule. 13-3 will be almost impossible…….

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk says:

Totally agree. 11-5 would be great, more like 10-6 looks doable, even if everything pretty much stays the same on defense, and we get some WRs in here. 6-2 at home, 4-4 on the road. Seattle, Ariz and Rams should all improve. The West will not be a cakewalk like this past season…

  21. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

    10-6 still wins the west.

Wow, hard to understand what’s going on in Indy. One debacle of a season, and Jim Irsay’s gutting the front office, and Peyton is likely gone as well.

Rewind one year ago and you look at the Niners and Colts and think, hmmmmmm, which one would be one play from a Super Bowl entry?

No way would I have expected the fortunes of these teams to change so dramatically.

    • Alleykat's avatar Alleykat says:

So true Chuck…..But once they.lost Peyton their season was over.Did anybody really.think Painter could.do shit. Not me.

  22. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Well, I didn’t think they’d tank this hard.

    • snarkk's avatar snarkk says:

I think the Colts were smart. They basically tanked the season after Manning got hurt. I don’t think any team accidentally plays that badly after losing just one guy, albeit a key guy. Result? They get Luck(y). They will build a whole new team around this dude for the next dozen years, just like they did around Manning. Brilliant…

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Shit, you never know with Irsay. he’s a crazy mofo at times.

He could Jerry Jones into a clusterfuck debacle of epic proportions. They still are an old defense, they’ve got shakey WRs, no run game to speak of, and a whole new front office.

      • twinfan1's avatar twinfan1 says:

No intelligent football person thinks tanking the season for a draft pick, any pick, is a good idea. Besides, if that was the plan, you don’t nearly blow it by winning 2 games..

      • Kevin's avatar Kevin says:

Brilliant?? well not if they don’t develope a defense. Manning was one of a kind, he had very talented recievers. the Colts D was there weakness and it showed this year. With out Manning they were worse than awful!!

      • Nipper's avatar Nipper says:

Tanking? I don’t think so at least not on purpose. No way…..not in football.

  23. Kevin's avatar Kevin says:

Well looking at those odds for 2013, I want to say that I heard/read somewhere that before the season started the NY G were 100/1 odds to win the SB. so all those NY fans that jumped on that could be hitting big pay day soon!!, Early odds are a crap shoot at best. I wonder what Indy’s odds were of winning the SB at the end of 2010??

  24. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

They were at 9.5 in wins. That’s all I know.

  25. snarkk's avatar snarkk says:

Aldon Smith busted in Miami Beach for DUI.
Nobody hurt. I’ll start to worry if he does it again…

  26. Flavor's avatar Flavor says:

Yeah. Weird, it says he was arrested Fri night but he was booked at 9:32 am Sat. What’s that all about? If he was arrested Fri night (presumably before midnight) what took so long to get him booked into jail?

    • phil fan's avatar phil fan says:

“Aldon Smith was observed swerving in and out of lanes on the MacArthur Causeway in Miami Beach before being pulled over at 4:33 a.m. Saturday, a police spokesman said Sunday. Smith, the 49ers’ rookie defensive end, was arrested and spent 3 ½ hours in a Miami-Dade County correctional facility before posting a $1,000 bond and being released.”

I haven’t had a damn thing to drink since our loss last Sunday night. Too depressed. The Niners are trying to slowly kill me by turning me sober again.

  29. phil fan's avatar phil fan says:

Judging from all the comments Berger posted the other day on Skeeb’s blog he hasn’t gone that way. Au contraire mes amis dude has hosted a drinking and music fest over there. You should ask him how he can be happy, what’s da secret?

Still enjoying the after-glow of the season over here. No worries

  30. phil fan's avatar phil fan says:

Looking at the final NFC West standings, heck even my call of 9-7 woulda won the Div this year. Assuming similar few losses against Rams, Cards, ‘Hawks…so gotta agree 10-6 prolly do it next year. I’ll make that call right now: Niners 10-6 next year. Yeah snarkk it’s gonna be tougher in 2012 but we’re going to have a better offense too.

  31. phil fan's avatar phil fan says:

Listened to the NFC title game again- really for the first time since the audio and video sucked over here after halftime. Our defense was awesome in that game as were special teams “except for” returning punts. Lowell Cohn (not Chuck!) makes the point that KW shoulda been out of the game as a punt returner after he had to dive for a punt in 3rd quarter (?). “Game was too big for him” sez LOL. Who to put in? Culliver or Reggie Smith both have experience at the position. LOL sez the game was too big for Harbaugh as he kept KW in and this is because JH is a rookie coach and he did not manage the game well in those respects. Maybe true, prolly:

Are the Niner coaches leading the NFC in the Pro Bowl?
I haven’t even been paying attention. Watch a meaningless exhibition with no hitting or the red carpet at the SAG Awards? I bet Diane Lane looks good in Versace.

  33. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

I’ve seen enough. INT then lateral, lateral and give the ball back.
What a joke. Back to the red carpet.

  34. Nipper's avatar Nipper says:

Yeah the Pro Bowl …… pure joke. They may as well have played with flags.

  35. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Yeah, I watched about 10 minutes, and had to laugh. I mean all the players were. The pass rushers were pretty much standing there. On the extra points it looked like the D lines were doing the wave.
    .
I went to the pro bowl in 1998, and at least they TRIED. That one had the only ejections in pro bowl history (Niner Steve Grogan and Chief Derrick Thomas). Funny, I saw a hockey all star game about 15 years ago, and it was similar. all offesne no defense. No hitting. I remember Joe Gastineau trying to take Montana’s head off in one.

  36. Kevin's avatar Kevin says:

Ha ha, the pro Bowl really?? Baseball is the only sport that has a true all star game. And that is because the best pitchers “Want” to strike out the best hitters. and the Hitters “Want” to get a hit off the best pitchers. Where as Football, Basketball, and Hockey there is too much potential to get hurt if a player goes all out, career ending type injury!! So it is usually a total offensive blow out! I mean come on the Basketball all star game is like 145-135 or some such non-sense.
