Yes, the biggest blown 9th inning league in the 125 year history of the team. They were 2,208-0 when leading by 6 or more in the 9th. Til today.
Up 9-3 in the top of the 9th, the team could not even get an out before Cincy tied it. Bivans came in and really had no clue. Not sure why whoever the interim manager even was didn’t pull him a little faster, but I think it was pretty obvious Bivens didn’t have it. He gave up the longest home run into the cove that I’ve ever seen. Then again, Smith came in and nuked the joint. And the rest was errors, walks and general rookie ball crap.
I guess the lockout is a blessing.

Took a look at his first year with Giants in 1968. They won 90 and out of money in 2nd place. Mac had monster year with .963 OPS, 36 HRs 105 rbis and walked more times than he struck out (72-71).
Year of the pitcher, right? Giants had 77 complete games, 30 by Marichal.

4th inning took forever. Schmitt started it with error, but then Ray gave up 3 hits and a BB and got out of it with bases loaded. 27 pitches, and by then he was at 80. 2 more singles to open 5th and TV got him out of there. Just wasn’t sharp with command and couldn’t put guys away.

Well, now that you mention it, it might’ve been… but really thought it was Ron Hunt. Ken Hunt was a pitcher and only played a year or two, yes? I think the Ron Hunt glove came out after his rookie year, early ’60s, the timing would’ve been right… But really, at this point, some childhood memories increasingly seem to be losing their credibility….

This might not be a thing at all, and I don’t know how to verify it, but observationally, it just seems that so many of the Giants homers are solo shots. I mean, the lead MLB in grand salami’s, right?, but seems most other HRs only net the team 1 run, when they sure could use more…
You’re right, this year they’ve hit fewer HRs than the MLB average with runners on, 35 to 43 percent of the total (SF has hit 38 of their 110 with men on). If they’d had average luck, it’d mean another 9 of their 110 HRs would have come with runners on. Two thirds of all multi RBI HRs are two run bombs. The net extra runs scored for SF would be about 10. If they’d been really lucky until now and hit a much higher percentage than avg., you can double those totals.
Of course a better team OBP might help, too. They’ve way underperformed their OPS in terms of runs scored. The OBP is below average, but the slugging is well above, which should compensate. Maybe the ridiculous lack of walks, relatively few HRs, and overabundance of doubles have weirdly combined to break the model.
