D A Y – T W O – D R A F T

Well, we traded down twice out of the 1st round, swapped a 4th for a 3rd and gained a 6th round pick. But there are still a lot of good players available.

My son thinks we are going with Boston. I think we go with Howell. Could still go O line with Chase Bisontis. Safety with Emmanuel McNeil-Warren or Treden Stukes. Reading the Chron this morning they referenced the Niners 1986 draft.

No 1st round pick but they nailed it. Wow. A few small-school guys thrown in the mix.

Round 2, Pick 39: Larry Roberts, DE (Alabama)
Round 3, Pick 56: Tom Rathman, FB (Nebraska)
Round 3, Pick 64: Tim McKyer, DB (Texas-Arlington)
Round 3, Pick 76: John Taylor, WR (Delaware State)
Round 4, Pick 96: Charles Haley, DE (James Madison)
Round 4, Pick 101: Steve Wallace, OT (Auburn)
Round 4, Pick 102: Kevin Fagan, DE (Miami)
Round 5, Pick 131: Pat Miller, LB (Florida)
Round 6, Pick 162: Don Griffin, DB (Middle Tennessee State)

No wonder they called Walsh a genius. This is one of the best drafts in NFL history.

It has been considered one of the great drafts in history for a long time. It really was a major factor in back-to-back Super Bowls wins. One can only hope we can do something half as good as that draft.

  2. Berger's avatar Berger says:

I would like an OG or edge, but more than that, I would like to take the best player available if he really stands out on our board.

There is a CB that dropped because of a January 2025 knee injury that caused him to miss the 2025 season. He probably would’ve been a top 10 pick if healthy in 2025. If the knee is 100%, he would be the best available, by far. Problem is our history with drafting injured players is not very good.

    • bakkentom's avatar bakkentom says:

Pregnon might be the best fit for the scheme. He has quick feet and strong hands. In Kyle Shanahan’s offense, Emmanuel Pregnon may just be the perfect build. He seems like the safe pick, the one Kyle Shanahan can trust right away.

      the above from 49erswebzone.com

that cb.is not fully healthy with a pin issue put in on his surgery which was from a comment I cannot find right now

      • alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 says:

Tom..It was Tennessee CB Jermond McCoy who had a bone plug inserted in his knee.Doctors and lots of teams think he will need another surgery to remove it and along recovering time are dropping out on him.Missed the combines, but ran a 4.37 at his college combine which is crazy fast?Missed most of last season,2024 he was great but I’m out to risky of a player..

  3. Winder's avatar Winder says:

Pretty sure that was mostly McVay’s thumbprint on that draft. And we could use another just like it.

    • Winder's avatar Winder says:

Walsh didn’t really want Montana as his QB and I am not if he was his second pick. But he loved the way Montana worked with Clark when he went and saw them and the rest is history. I think McVay was the best GM in the league for a whole lot of year. I know when he left we didn’t do all that great. Walsh also picked Donahue to secede him as GM possibly the worse combo in 49er history during those years. Though I gotta admit Baalke made em look great. Walsh was a great coach and a true genius of the West Coast offense but he was not a very good GM.

      • Winder's avatar Winder says:

        years

      • alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 says:

Well no quite right Winder but I appreciate your effort! Walsh went out to Clemson to scout QB Steve Fuller who he was high on and Dwight Clark was catching some throws from him and asked him do you have any film on yourself and Clark said well I only caught 11 balls last years so not much lol. Walsh just filed him away in his brilliant mind. The draft happens Fuller goes to the Chiefs in 1st Rd ,then Walsh takes Montana in the 3rd round, and in the 10th rd he remembers Clark probably a wth pick and he messed so well with Montana and the rest is history including “The Catch” which started the Dynasty Run.. Sorry for the long post..

  4. Winder's avatar Winder says:

lol I’m wrong about a lot of things that happened years ago. Thanks for that I remember that now

  5. blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado says:

Agree with Unc and Berger’s 8:43am (and others here that posted similar) about the ’86 draft.

Winder, when the Niners got their hands on Steve Young in that ’87 trade, Walsh was impressed with Young’s natural abilities, e.g., 4.55 40 yd. dash, strong arm, etc. He discounted his putrid stats with Tampa Bay, 10 or 11 TDs, 20 something interceptions, and 2, mabe 3 wins in 2 seasons. In effect, Walsh attributed those poor stats to the mediocre talent around him, as well as coaching.

So, I believe this is primarily when Walsh was already thinking about getting rid of Montana. Basically, Montana magnificently out performed his 3rd round drafting, but Walsh was always thinking 2-3 seasons in the future. Anyway, I totally get how Montana was offended by a lot of people saying that Young was the heir apparent. Young was the Golden Boy at BYU. I would be pissed too if someone was basically training for my job.

    • Winder's avatar Winder says:

Yeah blade I do remember that pretty well. I also think that if we kept Montana for another couple of years we would have won at one of our playoff games against Dallas and probably another SB. I truly believe that.

      • Berger's avatar Berger says:

I always thought that too. Of course, keeping Charles Haley would’ve helped too.

      • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado says:

Likewise – we lost a SB because of it. Montana going to the Chiefs was like being stabbed in the back. Chiefs became one of my favorite NFL teams when that happened. If the Niners didn’t get to the SB, I was hoping Joe would lead them to the SB, but they fell short. Nevertheless, I know KC loved him while he was there.

History Made in the draft 🌴

A record FIVE Polynesians selected in the FIRST ROUND of the NFL Draft accounting for 16% of all first round picks!

An incredible milestone, considering Polynesians represent 0.3% of the US population.

The players were Spencer Fano,Vegaloane,Getabagkai,Frances Mauiigoa, and Caleb Lomu

And the God of Polynesian Football Players are own great 49er Jesse Sapolu chimed in and said What a prideful night for Polynesian football 🏈 🤙🏽

    • Irish Kevin's avatar Irish Kevin says:

Yeah but had you heard of Jerry Rice out of Mississippi? ESPN had a clip of him, looks like he might have some speed

      • Winder's avatar Winder says:

Nope, but I just read his bio and if he buys into our system he should be very good for us. Our FO must think a lot of him.

      • Irish Kevin's avatar Irish Kevin says:

Yeah, just by looking at the picks Walsh made in later rounds, it just strengthens my statement that the whole draft is a crap shoot, close your eyes and throw that dirt at the board 😂😂😂

  12. Berger's avatar Berger says:

I can’t tell you how disappointed I am with this pick.

  13. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 says:

Wow unbelievable Stribling? WTF he’s solid I thought they could have gotten him later, but the Safety Emanuel McNiel Warren is a stud player that is a difference maker! Guess they hated Boston!

I am sure Sapolu will sit him down and have a talk.

  17. Irish Kevin's avatar Irish Kevin says:

    Matt Miller ESPN, Post-Draft Analysis
The 49ers moved out of Round 1 and took calls all day about trading out of this spot, but with so much high-end talent on the board they stuck and picked here to address the wide receiver position. Despite adding Mike Evans and having former first-rounder Ricky Pearsall on the roster, the 49ers lack a deep threat. That’s who Stribling is, with 4.36 speed at 6-foot-2 and 207 pounds. This is a surprise with Denzel Boston and Germie Bernard on the board, but the scheme fit and need are legit to start Round 2. — Matt MIller

  18. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 says:

I can kinda get behind the pick cause Shanny has no confidence in Watkins and surely Cowing .Pearsall is glass,Evans&Kirk aging fast (though Evans is still special) but Stribling besides fast 4.37 36 vertical and can play slot, both outside WR positions and the major key he BLOCKS maybe one of the best WR doing that!(a Shanny must have trait)

  19. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 says:

Wow The 49ers just sent LB Dee Winters to the Cowpokes for their 5th Rd pick number 152..

  21. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

  22. Winder's avatar Winder says:

we were on the clock a long time before that trade

  23. Irish Kevin's avatar Irish Kevin says:

I am now reading the Niners traded Dee Winters to Dallas for pick 152. 5thround

  24. Winder's avatar Winder says:

    we got a 3rd and a 4th for that trade #70, 107 for pick 58

  25. Irish Kevin's avatar Irish Kevin says:

I can’t find where the Niners next pick is

  26. 12th Man's avatar 12th Man says:

They do things their own way, courage of their convictions and all that jazz.

I didn’t see a single mock draft anywhere for WR Stribling to the Niners.

  27. Irish Kevin's avatar Irish Kevin says:

Romello Height DE, Height garnered first-team All-Big 12 honors in his only season at Texas Tech, primarily serving as a stand-up edge rusher. He has a very quick first step and is light on his feet. He has a good combination of pass-rush moves mainly based on speed. He can run the loop, counter with a spin move or slingshot off offensive lineman using their momentum. Height has good hand usage to swat and keep blockers off his chest. When offensive linemen get their hands on him, he has trouble disengaging and can be overpowered. Height doesn’t have true knock-back ability, but he can harness some speed to power. Once in the backfield, he displays good closing speed to the quarterback. He has the ability to drop into coverage, but it’s not his strong suit. Overall, Height has some quickness to serve as a designated pass rusher but could develop into a more impactful run defender. — Scouts Inc.

    • Winder's avatar Winder says:

We gotta start feeding him and make him live in the weight room.

Agree on both need to put a lot of meat on his bone and pump more iron, but hell he’s a speed rusher for hopefully for Bosa. So let’s get that OG still praying 🙏 for Oregon OG Pregnon but do the Niners give a shit?

    • bakkentom's avatar bakkentom says:

big gap between #33 and #70 and WR and 239 lb undersized DE. All those name’s of DE, OG , EMW at 1st graded FS gone. OG Pregnon will be gone before the next pick at #90.

  32. 12th Man's avatar 12th Man says:

Well they went WR and DE and although I didn’t necessarily agree with the particular players over some other choices it is what I figured they would do. For the rest of the draft I feel they just need to go BPA regardless of position, this team needs a new batch of stars in the worst way and thats the best way to find them.

I’m not a fan of trading our 3rd best LB away because its almost inevitable the bench will be needed.

    Other than that, meh.

Lynch prefers day 3 picks over 2nd Rd for Edge and OG. When does the lynching party start. Oh and the trade down giving up EMW for FS.

  41. mwrymer's avatar mwrymer says:

    Hi All.

    Sportsdude from the Flap…

Lynch / Shanahan picked a player who according to the Athletic..

Shanahan isn’t afraid to against conventional thinking to draft WR’s

“The Ole Miss receiver checks a lot of boxes for Shanahan. He stood out in college for his blocking, which suggests a certain toughness that Shanahan covets more than any other trait in his recievers”

Just me but maybe we should draft receivers who can get open and catch the ball???

  42. bakkentom's avatar bakkentom says:

why didn’t Lynch use that 5th to grab OG Pregnon. Why the reluctance to trade up to get plug and play from week 1 at LG a perfect Shanahan blocker, passpro with the size, athleticism and zbs/gap blocker demonstrated performance.

Lynch did that last year having to settle for Upton Stout and letting Raiders grab two OT directly in front of us.

    he is killing this team.

  43. Berger's avatar Berger says:

I’m good with who we drafted. I just feel that we could’ve got the WR and RB with a later slot. They signed two players in FA who have experience playing LG. We also have Conner Colby, the human direct route to the QB. I really don’t know what to think other than root for the players we do have.

    • Winder's avatar Winder says:

I feel the same way Berger. Except for last year when we took 3 dline guys with our first picks we then went and got a bunch of no-names who we will find out this year how good or bad that draft was. This year is business as usual and I expect day 3 to be the same. Day 3 is always my favorite day since the players we get are real happy to be here.

  44. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 says:

They had their choices of Safety EMW,2 OG ‘BTW would of started at LG Pregnon&Dunker but hey Shanny as usual gets his RB Kaelon Black ( why cause he won a championship with Mendoza?)oh btw was never among the 200 plus players to receive a combine invite, his hands measure 8 7/8 and arms at 29 7/8 that screams fumbler and no pass catcher..

  45. Berger's avatar Berger says:

Height reminds me of Bryce Huff. He’ll be a designated pass rusher and should be able to play on day one. I’m a little surprised he was on the board at 70.

    • Winder's avatar Winder says:

I don’t think he’s strong enough to out muscle olineman but if we use him as an olb he might find the space he needs It’s an interesting situation. That’s why he has to get stronger.

  46. Winder's avatar Winder says:

We are not talking collage olinemen anymore we are talking grass fed monsters. but he’s got a lot of time with ota’s and preseason. I am going to keep a close eye on him

James was there that day and commented in thread that Agustin Ramirez homerun to deep Lf was one of longest bombs he’d seen to that part of yard.

Last night they just teed off on Houser, lot of loud contact. 16 hits total.

he is 305 with short arms, unless he can put on 10 lbs of muscle he maybe will be center only

this draft is very bad. For LG am really hoping FA Jones has his neck fully healed and Connor Colby is fully healthy. Both is also a 300 lbs and tall. Purdy could be in a body bag first SEA game.

    • blade3colorado's avatar blade3colorado says:

Sounds like “wheat separated from chaff” as the bible saying goes. You’re right bakkenton, per this article, it looks like the Niners have found a potentially good offensive lineman (LG) to develop.

  67. Winder's avatar Winder says:

Next to day 3 of the draft today is my second fav. It’s UDFA day and i guess maybe tomorrow to but I don’t think we are going to pick up more than 8.

  68. 12th Man's avatar 12th Man says:

For me that was just an OK draft, a few reach players IMO and I don’t see any diamonds in the rough after looking at their highlight reels. I will be overjoyed to be wrong.

I do think its time to shake up the evaluation and player choice process. Lynch is big into his “consensus” in the room, pick by committee approach. The problem with that is a horse if designed by committee becomes a camel.

I feel like the coach has too much say. As in another first pick WR to study for a year from the bench although since Shanahan regards a WR blocking skills above the typical prized traits of a WR he may actually see the field as a defacto run blocker.

A RB in the 3rd, again, but this time its a guy not regarded highly enough to even get a combine invite. Taken as the 3rd RB off the board. They are 0 and 3 at this and staring 0 and 4 in the face.

The team badly needs some impact players and good GM’s find them year after year and even an occasional poor draft year doesn’t kill the team building momentum, but what does is year after year poor drafting and that has been the Niners. I just don’t see 4 players in this draft that are impact guys.

Again, I hope I am wrong.

    • bakkentom's avatar bakkentom says:

my gut reaction was the ranking of the #33 should have been 10 to 15 picks.later and how many 2nd or 3rd would we have gotten. That void between #33 and #70 hurt especially since EMW and Pregnon were both there.

Niners have good contacts at Washington to know about the WR but they still screwed it up.

For me this draft was salvaged by Willis and Cruz. Don’t dick around and you’ve got C and LG starters in 2027 and maybe a TW successor .

Willis is 10 lbs lighter for guard. Both is only 300 lbs and too tall for C.

  69. willedav's avatar willedav says:

Hopefully they’ve done something to address both lines, but we’ll see. As for WR, look who they’ve lost in short time–Deebo Aiyuk Jennings for start, plus Kittle the rock missed bunch of time.

Always going to be challenge to navigate what shanny wants v. overall needs to remain competitive in very Tough Division. Ultimately up to coaching staff to do what they can with who they have.

  70. willedav's avatar willedav says:

As for Giants, Schmitt happens and bottom 5 in lineup did most of damage yesterday to help bail out top guys not named Arraez, who has been revelation.

Years ago when I was playing co ed softball one team in our league named themselves Shit Happens. We thrashed them and in hand shake line I complimented coach and he said, “Yeah well sometimes shit happens to us.”

  71. Berger's avatar Berger says:

I don’t hate this draft, but I sure don’t love it. The WR at 33 looks like a stud. Good hands, fast, best blocking WR in draft. Can play H-back. Is not good at winning 50-50 balls.

This guy was probably on more team’s radars than the experts thought. I thought we could’ve got him later. Of course, can’t be sure of that. I do like the player and we do have him.

Height fills an important need. Situational pass rusher.

The RB was a head scratcher this early, but he does run people over. We need one of those.

I really like the Enrique Cruz pick.

All in all, we will just have to wait and see. I remember not liking the 1986 draft at the time. I was happy to be very wrong about that one.

    • Winder's avatar Winder says:

Berger the first thing I thought when I saw our new RB’s picture was that he looked like Frank Gore. I think about the same size and weight I believe. So if he is even 1/4 as good as Gore then he’s a steal.

      • Winder's avatar Winder says:

I also think that a lot of the RB love comes from Bobby Turner and I think he holds a lot of sway in all our RB picks.

        Huh? Why Unca?

I’m joking. Sort of. Just got tired of the hype. Everyone listened to them and I just got tired of hearing most of the overdriven teenybopper whole lotta love type songs. Plus they ripped off a lot of old blues guys by changing names and lyrics. Like the Lemon song is Killing Floor. Whole lotta love. Howlin’ Wolf sued and Zep settled out of court. Whole lotta love was an old Willie Dixon song. Dazed and Confused, jimmy page stole from a Yardbird opening act, Jake Homes.

On and on they ripped off tons of bands and musicians.

I do like Physical Graffiti because the only song from that that got any airplay was Kashmir. That, and Achilles Last Stand I can listen to. Presence is OK.

Led Zep weren’t “The Lone Rangers.” Lots of other rock bands ripped off Blues songs, albeit, you’re right Led Zep was the most publicized of the bands that did it.

There’s stealing riffs and there’s stealing written songs.

It just kinda pissed me off that Zep was so cavalier about stealing money from the blues guys they were ripping off. Guys who were struggling

The Stones would bring guys like Buddy Guy, BB King, John Lee Hooker, and others on tour with them to help them out.

Zep settled like 10 lawsuits out of court.
