Well, we traded down twice out of the 1st round, swapped a 4th for a 3rd and gained a 6th round pick. But there are still a lot of good players available.
My son thinks we are going with Boston. I think we go with Howell. Could still go O line with Chase Bisontis. Safety with Emmanuel McNeil-Warren or Treden Stukes. Reading the Chron this morning they referenced the Niners 1986 draft.
No 1st round pick but they nailed it. Wow. A few small-school guys thrown in the mix.
Round 2, Pick 39: Larry Roberts, DE (Alabama)
Round 3, Pick 56: Tom Rathman, FB (Nebraska)
Round 3, Pick 64: Tim McKyer, DB (Texas-Arlington)
Round 3, Pick 76: John Taylor, WR (Delaware State)
Round 4, Pick 96: Charles Haley, DE (James Madison)
Round 4, Pick 101: Steve Wallace, OT (Auburn)
Round 4, Pick 102: Kevin Fagan, DE (Miami)
Round 5, Pick 131: Pat Miller, LB (Florida)
Round 6, Pick 162: Don Griffin, DB (Middle Tennessee State)
No wonder they called Walsh a genius. This is one of the best drafts in NFL history.
It has been considered one of the great drafts in history for a long time. It really was a major factor in back-to-back Super Bowls wins. One can only hope we can do something half as good as that draft.
I would like an OG or edge, but more than that, I would like to take the best player available if he really stands out on our board.
There is a CB that dropped because of a January 2025 knee injury that caused him to miss the 2025 season. He probably would’ve been a top 10 pick if healthy in 2025. If the knee is 100%, he would be the best available, by far. Problem is our history with drafting injured players is not very good.
Pregnon might be the best fit for the scheme. He has quick feet and strong hands. In Kyle Shanahan’s offense, Emmanuel Pregnon may just be the perfect build. He seems like the safe pick, the one Kyle Shanahan can trust right away.
the above from 49erswebzone.com
that cb.is not fully healthy with a pin issue put in on his surgery which was from a comment I cannot find right now
Tom..It was Tennessee CB Jermond McCoy who had a bone plug inserted in his knee.Doctors and lots of teams think he will need another surgery to remove it and along recovering time are dropping out on him.Missed the combines, but ran a 4.37 at his college combine which is crazy fast?Missed most of last season,2024 he was great but I’m out to risky of a player..
Pretty sure that was mostly McVay’s thumbprint on that draft. And we could use another just like it.
Walsh didn’t really want Montana as his QB and I am not if he was his second pick. But he loved the way Montana worked with Clark when he went and saw them and the rest is history. I think McVay was the best GM in the league for a whole lot of year. I know when he left we didn’t do all that great. Walsh also picked Donahue to secede him as GM possibly the worse combo in 49er history during those years. Though I gotta admit Baalke made em look great. Walsh was a great coach and a true genius of the West Coast offense but he was not a very good GM.
years
Well no quite right Winder but I appreciate your effort! Walsh went out to Clemson to scout QB Steve Fuller who he was high on and Dwight Clark was catching some throws from him and asked him do you have any film on yourself and Clark said well I only caught 11 balls last years so not much lol. Walsh just filed him away in his brilliant mind. The draft happens Fuller goes to the Chiefs in 1st Rd ,then Walsh takes Montana in the 3rd round, and in the 10th rd he remembers Clark probably a wth pick and he messed so well with Montana and the rest is history including “The Catch” which started the Dynasty Run.. Sorry for the long post..
lol I’m wrong about a lot of things that happened years ago. Thanks for that I remember that now
kat I thought he wanted Cris Simms
Perhaps you mean Phil Sims.
Agree with Unc and Berger’s 8:43am (and others here that posted similar) about the ’86 draft.
Winder, when the Niners got their hands on Steve Young in that ’87 trade, Walsh was impressed with Young’s natural abilities, e.g., 4.55 40 yd. dash, strong arm, etc. He discounted his putrid stats with Tampa Bay, 10 or 11 TDs, 20 something interceptions, and 2, mabe 3 wins in 2 seasons. In effect, Walsh attributed those poor stats to the mediocre talent around him, as well as coaching.
So, I believe this is primarily when Walsh was already thinking about getting rid of Montana. Basically, Montana magnificently out performed his 3rd round drafting, but Walsh was always thinking 2-3 seasons in the future. Anyway, I totally get how Montana was offended by a lot of people saying that Young was the heir apparent. Young was the Golden Boy at BYU. I would be pissed too if someone was basically training for my job.
Yeah blade I do remember that pretty well. I also think that if we kept Montana for another couple of years we would have won at one of our playoff games against Dallas and probably another SB. I truly believe that.
I always thought that too. Of course, keeping Charles Haley would’ve helped too.
Likewise – we lost a SB because of it. Montana going to the Chiefs was like being stabbed in the back. Chiefs became one of my favorite NFL teams when that happened. If the Niners didn’t get to the SB, I was hoping Joe would lead them to the SB, but they fell short. Nevertheless, I know KC loved him while he was there.

Osa redid his contract to free up $11 million for what. Maybe mac jones for kayvon. Our draft capital still sucks. This takes pass rush de off the list.
History Made in the draft 🌴
A record FIVE Polynesians selected in the FIRST ROUND of the NFL Draft accounting for 16% of all first round picks!
An incredible milestone, considering Polynesians represent 0.3% of the US population.
The players were Spencer Fano,Vegaloane,Getabagkai,Frances Mauiigoa, and Caleb Lomu
And the God of Polynesian Football Players are own great 49er Jesse Sapolu chimed in and said What a prideful night for Polynesian football 🏈 🤙🏽
we coulda had Lomu if we stayed at 27.
I bet we trade out of #33. I just hope we don’t trade our selves into oblivion.
Hey Unca – Happy Birthday tomorrow (in case I am not here)!
What?Well Happy Birthday tomorrow Chuck! Man are Editor ✍️ is already on top of his game!
Same from me Happy Birthday and thanks for running this blog.
Thanks guys! 2 minutes
of course we pick a guy I’ve never heard of
A Hawaii boy from the leeward side.
Yeah but had you heard of Jerry Rice out of Mississippi? ESPN had a clip of him, looks like he might have some speed
Nope, but I just read his bio and if he buys into our system he should be very good for us. Our FO must think a lot of him.
Yeah, just by looking at the picks Walsh made in later rounds, it just strengthens my statement that the whole draft is a crap shoot, close your eyes and throw that dirt at the board 😂😂😂
I can’t tell you how disappointed I am with this pick.
Wow unbelievable Stribling? WTF he’s solid I thought they could have gotten him later, but the Safety Emanuel McNiel Warren is a stud player that is a difference maker! Guess they hated Boston!
I am sure Sapolu will sit him down and have a talk.
just when I think I get what these guys are doing they do this.
chuck we do this same stuff every year. Pick obscure players hardly anyone has heard of but for the last few years we have done ok with it.
did the owners allow a pick like this. I feel very sorry for solid fans. The brand of SF59ers has been severely damaged.
Jed needs to fire Shanalynch after day 3 is completed.
of all the reasons this isn’t one of them.
Matt Miller ESPN, Post-Draft Analysis
The 49ers moved out of Round 1 and took calls all day about trading out of this spot, but with so much high-end talent on the board they stuck and picked here to address the wide receiver position. Despite adding Mike Evans and having former first-rounder Ricky Pearsall on the roster, the 49ers lack a deep threat. That’s who Stribling is, with 4.36 speed at 6-foot-2 and 207 pounds. This is a surprise with Denzel Boston and Germie Bernard on the board, but the scheme fit and need are legit to start Round 2. — Matt MIller
I can kinda get behind the pick cause Shanny has no confidence in Watkins and surely Cowing .Pearsall is glass,Evans&Kirk aging fast (though Evans is still special) but Stribling besides fast 4.37 36 vertical and can play slot, both outside WR positions and the major key he BLOCKS maybe one of the best WR doing that!(a Shanny must have trait)
Wow The 49ers just sent LB Dee Winters to the Cowpokes for their 5th Rd pick number 152..
I hope someone here at least heard of our next pick
wtaf? Did we trade again?
we were on the clock a long time before that trade
I am now reading the Niners traded Dee Winters to Dallas for pick 152. 5thround
we got a 3rd and a 4th for that trade #70, 107 for pick 58
I can’t find where the Niners next pick is
Right now 67 th pick barring another trade
Winder is right #70 unless we trade for Laura Rutledge
They do things their own way, courage of their convictions and all that jazz.
I didn’t see a single mock draft anywhere for WR Stribling to the Niners.
