The Bitch Clock

Hmmmmmm, sure seems like a lot of pitchers are struggling with the pitch clock. Webb, Cobb, John (how will you miss me if I don’t go away) Brebbia and others who I can’t remember have given up balls, stolen bases, and generally couldn’t get their shit together. I’m sure this is a problem across the league, but I’m not looking too hard, but a game did end on a bases-loaded time expiration.

Naturally the twitterverse and the interwebs exploded. Yeah, this is gonna be a learning curve for everyone involved, but it sure feels like they are going a little hard in the direction of saving time at the cost of pitchers just pitching. Guys that don’t even take too long to throw have issues.

We will see if this is an ongoing thing but one thing that did crack me up was seeing the Red Sox put a rover into short RF and use a 2-man outfield against Joey Gallo. Too fucking funny.

Next season, the cry will be, BAN THE OUTFIELD SHIFT ! ! !

There are many reasons why baseball has always been “the best sport” to me (and really, even more than just a sport, a microcosm of life). One is (was?) that baseball, unlike most other sports, is not/was not regulated by a clock of any kind. The only time a clock came into play was if an extra-innings game just wouldn’t end and finally had to bow to a local curfew and continue another day. I don’t think these new rules will ruin the sport, everyone will adjust and adapt… but adding any kind of clock to baseball contaminates what is a truly human-based, human-paced, game. Makes me just a little sad… just a little.

Good point, I never really thought about a clock and baseball before. It’s because of all the antics the players do that has slowed the game down to almost be unwatchable.

chuck- loved the kaleidoscope song they did some pretty cool stuff.

Man, so sorry to hear about Wayne Shorter, who I was able to see a bunch of times with VSOP and Weather Report. Also, David Lindley who I only got to see a few times. The one time with just David and Ry Cooder absolutely floored me. RIP to both.

As Winder said, given all the stalling by stepping out, plate tapping (Bryce Harper) and readjusting velcro after every pitch (Bart and others) etc. players brought this on themselves. In minors games a good half hour of complete non action was saved and fans seem to be more than OK with it. In pitchers’ case they are still allowed to step off the rubber, I think twice per AB to regain focus and collect themselves. Brebbia apparently was unaware of that; you don’t have to rush and throw a pitch you aren’t ready to throw.
Doval, the one Giants were supposedly most worried about, said he’s fine with it. Hey it will save loyal East Coast fans some sleep time for those night games, no?

  4. unca_chuck says:

Yeah, Nomar Garciaparrra was the king of. adjusting every piece of clothing adn equipment on his body between every pitch. No one will miss it and hopefully they will all get used to it.

  5. unca_chuck says:

Good to see DeScaffolding pitch well and feeling good. He had a strong start to 2021.

  6. Winder says:

Just read where La Stella hurt his shoulder and probably won’t play in cactus league games. Same as it ever was.

    • willedav says:

“La Spitta” as Loo used to call him. He eventually stopped doing that, but stepping out of the box after every pitch is uncalled for nonsense.

Looks like the Niners will move on from Robbie Gould who will test the F/A market. No way were the Niners going to use a 5.4 mil franchise tag on the 40 year old, which would have made him 2nd highest FG kicker behind Justin Tucker! Plenty of FG kickers out there, my choice Panthers Eddy Pinerio stronger leg,who is only 28 and made 33-35 FG’s last year with over half his kickoffs not returnable and would get a ringing endorsement from DC Steve Wilks..

  8. Irish Kevin says:

Not sure I would go this way. But it sounds like the Niners are interested. I like the end of the story

Fine. Just hope it never comes to Mayfield actually playing.

  10. willedav says:

Bochy reuinited with Will Smith, whom Rangers just added to pen.
Gad, he was on mound saving the Flap game 2019.
Seeing LaStella news of him being hurt again reminded me of “Glass” Sanchez. I remember the 2011 game where he dove for a ball and never got up, and was never the same. What a disaster 2011 was for all the scrubs that wound up playing for giants by end of the season after some of the heroes from 2010 got hurt or self destructed. I’m gonna go revisit some of those threads…cool Flav still has that stuff up.

  11. willedav says:

Found the box–Sanchez LAST game of his career June 10 2011 night game on Saturday vs. Reds in front of 41 thou lol.
Drew Stubbs led off for Cincy, and Fred Lewis PH.
Giants had Burriss SS and Tejada 3b hitting in front of Glass, who was replaced by Craw who took over SS as Burriss moved to 2b. Nate the less than Great got GWRBI in 9th for 3-2 W, Wilson got the win following Vogs Affeldt and Romo to mound. Huff btw was batting .228 with .673 OPS. Stewart was C, Torres came off bench to start rally with BB. Good stuff.

  12. willedav says:

Ah, first thread I pull up June 29 2011–Flav in lede “I hate Ryan Dempster.” And “I want Juan Uribe back.”

    • Winder says:

Hopefully Flav will decide to open up the blog again but it is nice to be able to view the old posts. I forget half of the players who were Giants 10 years ago and more than that if we go over 15 years.

  13. unca_chuck says:

2011 was such a fucked up season with Posey getting destroyed. As bad as that season went, they were still an 86-76 team.

12th in the standings is a bit shocking.

    • willedav says:

The threads around June 10 and 11 reference Lincecum getting lit up, C options including ill fated Hector Sanchez, crummy lineup yada yada. Lot of hilarious stuff from all (edd Ted PK Loo Mac PIA Zum Ted Kev Dirt Xoot DMD yourself, the usual suspects), mixed in with TF dissing on everyone. Fun read, I’ll check out some more.

The 2010 championship was nearly some kind of miracle, with a big bunch of players near the end of their careers (Burrell, Huff, Sanchez, Renteria, Torres) combined with the new generation of players (Cain, Timmy, Pablo, MadBum, Buster) who would develop into a real *team* in 2012 and onward. Watched some 2012 highlight vids and hadn’t remembered that Huff was part of that team… just barely… maybe Cody Ross too. Loved that 2012 team. Of course 2010 will always be special, as you always remember your first… uh… championship in SF. Watched some 2010 WS vids too, and amidst the joy of all that, man, was it painful to watch Pat the Bat-less. I think he must’ve struck out something like 10 or 12 times that WS. Lost it suddenly and quickly. Fortunately, it didn’t matter.

    Kat’s breaking football 🏈 news lol 😂
The Saints &Derek Carr have agreed on a 4-yr deal for $150M with 100M in total guarantees. He gets $70M effectively fully guaranteed ($60M at signing, another $10M in year 3 vesting after year 1)Carr structures his deal to accommodate Saints cap issues…

  16. unca_chuck says:

The first domino falls. Carr is a pretty good fit in the big easy.

I’m pretty sure Jimmy G goes to Seattle. Or maybe Houston for the big reunion. Not sure how sold the Dolphins are with Tua. He’s got majot health issues going forward, so they may take a shot at Jimmy.
