Things Can Only Go Up From Here

Right? This is rock bottom? Jimmy was just rusty? Even though the week before it was ‘just like riding a bike’ and he was Mr. Swaggger? This team does nothing but infuriate me. Trey Lance plays his 3rd NFL game in a driving monsoon, scores 10 points on the road, makes one rookie mistake, and all the pundits come out of the ooze to crucify him for being a bust, a failure, and wasted pick.

Jimmy Garoppolo, a 9 year vet playing in his 65th game in perfect weather scores 10 points, makes 3 rookie mistakes (walking out of the end zone being the biggest, to go along with the INT and the obligatory Jimmy fumble), and all the pundits come out of the muck to defend him. Oh, he didn’t practice with the team. He was rusty. He just had surgery. He had a bad day. His Chi was in the 7th house of Mars. My take? Jimmy is an idiot.

Fuck, I don’t know. More annoying to me is the guy who architected all this madness is not catching any heat from the national media or the locals for the debacle that this offense is right now. Kyle Shamahan took a shitty team and made it respectable. Yet the onus on him even before he got here was his choking away a 25 point lead in the Atlanta Super Bowl. He took Matt Ryan and made him an MVP. Turned Matt Shaub into a Pro Bowl QB. RG III had a rookie-of-the-year season under Shanny.

So, what happened to Jimmy? He’s apparently immune to the Kyle effect. This far into Kyle’s tutelage, and Jimmy is still a one-read and panic QB. He takes unnecessary sacks, has no pocket awareness, and has the escapability of a snail. So, what is Kyle to do? Build the most boring, predictable offense he possibly can. I get that Kyle doesn’t want to take unnecessary risks throwing the ball too much, but he’s his own worst enemy when it comes to putting Jimmy in bad situations.

We saw the results. Quick passes on 1st down to start the game. It opened the run game on that 1st drive. Quick score. And Shanny’s response to that success was to stop doing it and go back to the prevent offense. Teams invariably catch up and pass us, so Kyle is forced to have Jimmy throw. When the other team KNOWS he has to throw. Trouble ensues.

I’ve pretty much given up on expecting anything decent from this team at this point, so I won’t be so angry if we end up getting waxed by the Rams. They looked pathetic early and rebounded.

Can we?

Just a reminder of why most people wanted to get rid of Jimmy. When he is on he is a very good QB but when he’s not he is terrible. I don’t think he has the desire to actually get better. I think big money does that to some. I would like to see us go out and get Payton. I like Lynch and I think he is truly trying to get this team better. The draft is a big gamble in which we seem to lose to many times. If Payton wants to keep him fine if not o’well.

    Some fun stuff

    Hah!!!

  3. unca_chuck says:

What is so galling is all these plays, Jimmy is throwing off flat feet. He doesn’t drive the ball at all. But I guess this better than Lance’s mechanics.

    Think Bobb
    Think timing
    Think accuracy
Think about the fact that Lynch has pretty much built a very respectful Defense, which gave Shannys’ Offense more than enough support to be 3-0
Shanny has whiffed, and wasted more high Picks, and still has an OL that can’t pass protect when called upon.
Find the next BOBB and quit giving Shanny the Draft keys for RBs and WRs.

Jimmy’s got ZERO deep ball touch, or accuracy, to scare an opposing Defense.
    Work on that Kyle.
Take some heat off the predictable passing plays perhaps?
Make a S think about getting out of the box?

  5. Berger says:

I guaranteed my Rams friend that the 49ers would score in the first 10 plays of the game if the Rams would keep their offense on the sideline.

  6. unca_chuck says:

Hey, we usually start OK. It’s the prevent offense the last 3 quarters that kill us.

  7. Winder says:

I figure we will see Purdy pretty soon. I give Jimmy about 2 more games before he gets hurt. I hope Purdy can run fast.

I like the Sean Payton idea. The man is ready to come back. Is he just waiting for the Dallas job? Probably. But we have a good team to offer him and it’s there to be successful year 1 for the new guy.

Jimmy supporters only look at his winning percentage and good looks. And I use to hang my hat on that, too. The winning percentage, not the latter. It’s confusing because he most certainly is garbage. I don’t care about rust, the man has played in this league and in this system for five years now. But would any of us be surprised if we came out and beat L.A by 24? Nope. Because that’s how it goes with Jimmy. And I wish he was gone. This was the biggest reason I was so angry when they resigned him. Now we’re stuck and still talking about this man. They should have just cut him. Who cares who signed him. I for one would love to play Jimmy twice a year in Seattle. Fuck him.

I wouldn’t be surprised if we win this week or if we lose. If we win I knew it’s there the whole time. If we lose, it’s something Jimmy did and the god awful play calling and coaching of the team. I’m also just getting tired of this team playing down. It feels like we’re heading back into the direction of laughing stock of the league and it worries me.

And I’m not even going to touch on the fact we’re missing our starting QB, RB and LT. Just to name the offense. Show me a team missing those three things and still dominating football games. Missed Armstead last week and probably this week (and a few other weeks down the line I’m sure.) I don’t even need to bring up the fact we signed that fucking bum when we should have let him walk and put the money towards Buckner. 1 of 3 draft picks that have actually hit for us. But that’s another rant.

  9. unca_chuck says:

Yeah, I’m in the same boat. It just feels like all the bolts are wiggling off the wheels and this shit is gonna get ugly. There’s too much unnecessary week-to-week drama around this team. Like we’re the fucking Dallas Cowboys lite.

This feels so much like the end of the Harbaugh regime. Great defense and a plodding offense that did nothing unless we were way behind. Harbaugh’s teams had the same tendencies to play well early and then turtle up and leave the game up to the defense.

Once again we are SO close to being a strong team, but every year we have injuries, methodical play. and uninspired leadership dragging this team down. We should have blown out both Chicago and Denver but we flail around, make stupid plays, and drop to their level of suck.

Denver punted 10 times. We turned the ball over 3 times.

Never heard this version before. Wore out the banana album when it first came out.

  11. Winder says:

For a Velvet fan like myself this is pure gold. You can hear the original Dylan influence in Lou.

  12. unca_chuck says:

Huh. This is crazy good. On the road to Montana tomorrow. Should be on the air by Saturday.

  13. unca_chuck says:

    Is that on Madcap Laughs?

  14. Berger says:

I always liked this Syd song.

  15. unca_chuck says:

The video is tragic. He wrote a song about being removed from the band while he was in the process of being removed from the band. He also writes about losing his mind while he is losing his mind. He was certainly aware of what was going on even if he didn’t want to be a part of it.

  16. Berger says:

This song is me. I used to care, but things have changed.

  17. Irish Kevin says:

Okay so what exactly went wrong with offense, well Nick Wagner on Twitter says , Deebo, Brandon, Kittle, 15 touches, 141 yards and a Touchdown in the first half, second half the 3 of them, 2 touches 5 yards, Nicks assessment of the second half was Yikes. Yikes indeed

    • Winder says:

Sounds like Denver adjusted but we didn’t. That has been happening for a long time. One key injury to our oline and we are toast. Shanny sure does seem stubborn to the point of WTF.

    • Berger says:

Plays were there. Jimmy could not throw an accurate pass. He missed a short Texas rout in the 4th quarter that would have sealed the game. It was a short pass of less than 10 yards. Deebo had reach back and break up the interception. If he gets hit in stride, he might have a long TD. If Jimmy throws like that this week he needs to be pulled.

      • Winder says:

Yeah, Jimmy does have a lot to answer for that 2nd half. Jimmy misses lots of plays and has since he’s been here. I don’t think he is trying to get better. I am just really pissed at the way our offense works and to me that is mostly on Shanny.

  18. Irish Kevin says:

When JG misses on passes Kyle goes straight to the run, what Kyle needs to do is continue to challenge JG so that he either starts making the plays or Kyle finally realizes he needs to go to the 3rd string guy

  19. Irish Kevin says:

Announcers for Chiefs/Bucs game commented that the Chiefs went out and got an O-line to protect Mahomes. I wonder when the Niners will do that to protect their rookie QB or any QB they have. Hopefully before I die.

  20. unca_chuck says:

Man, I wish I had a clue as to what would happen tomorrow. Can’t believe we are favored.

  21. Irish Kevin says:

When your team has scored 41 points and you are up by 17 with less than 5 mins left in the game, I can live with an interception

  22. unca_chuck says:

That is crazy. This pre-Rick James Neil. I’ll move this to the next post.
