What is it about the national media and San Francisco 49ers quarterbacks? Every few days there’s a new report (substantiated by the proverbial ‘someone in the building’) that the 49ers are ‘disappointed’ in Trey Lance’s development and are dabbling with starting Jimmy G.
Colin Cowherd is the latest in a long line of talking heads that wonder why Jimmy G is still on the team (duh!!! Does shoulder surgery ring any bells?), he wonders why there isn’t any tape on Lance (it’s fucking May, and he played TWO games last year. Look at THOSE tapes), and that people are ‘selling’ Trey too hard.
Huh? Last week, the problem was NO ONE was talking about Lance. Now there is too much talk. Funny shit. He also said the Chiefs didn’t ‘sell’ Mahomes. Jesus. There’s a thing call the internet where you can look things up. There are about 250 articles on the development of Mahomes as he sat behind Alex Smith.
You know. The FUCKING PLAN ALL ALONG by the coaching staff. So, Cowherd thinks it would have been a better idea to not go the the NFCCG and force Lance to play his rookie year? Got it. Or throw a rookie QB into a playoff game? Brilliant.
Lazy fuck posting stupid shit a la Emmanuel Acho and Marcellus Wiley who both said “some guy in the building said blah blah blah. . . ” Must be fun to simply make shit up to get noticed in the interwebs. Or to drive people to your lame-ass TV show. What a fucking gig.
Whatevs. No one knows how this pans out. it may take a couple years. Josh Allen sure didn’t light the world up his first season.
Peyton Manning didn’t look very good his 1st year either. Fuck the media and Cowherd.
Yeah, the media had an orgiastic wet dream over who the Niners would pick in 2020. The whole Mac Jones/FIelds/Lance deal was a media-generated shit-storm that served no purpose other than to generate clicks for sites.
Shanalynch took a big leap with a trade package for an established known quantity nfl qb and applied to a fcs qb with basically one year experience .
What if they spent those 3 first’s on online studs and traded Jimmy for a Baker Mayfield or Sam darnold and retrain in a better system.
What if indeed. Hard to grade the trade when Lance hasn’t played yet. Mayfield and Darnold are known shit commodities. Darnold anyway. Mayfield may still salvage a career. But he looks like a clipboard guy as well.
Lance is not the QB I wanted but I though he looked good vs the Texans. Now we find out he played with a bad finger on his throwing hand all year. Give the kid a chance. My gut feeling says he’s going to be really good.
He can make some amazing throws. If he can learn to sit in the pocket and read, he’ll be great. But then that’s the thing, running QBs don’t usually learn to read very well until they are old and can’t run so well. The good news is in college he ran a system where he had to read the whole field, so at least he has some experience at it.
To echo what I said above, I’m not sold on him yet bit I’ve seen enough to think he has a chance to be very good.
Did you want Jones? Speaking of ‘what if’s’ do you think Shanny starts Jones over Jimmy in the Green Bay game?
I didn’t want to give up 3 first round picks for any QB. We could have stayed where we were and picked up Jones, if we even took a QB. If Lance works out all is forgiven. I am rooting that he ends up being the QB pf our future since we did already spend the 3 first round picks.
All I got is a lot of hope that Lance pans out. A big gamble but a possible big payoff.
Looking at our track record with high picks, I’m not as concerned! They made their bed, now they have to lie in it. The Rams did the same shit with Goff a few years back, cut their losses and recovered quickly. It isn’t the death knell it is thought to be.
It doesn’t have to be a death knell, but the time lost can push any team out of their championship window, not to mention the high draft picks lost. Lance’s loopy throwing motion and inaccuracy concern me, but we’ll just have to see how it plays out this year. By all accounts he’s working his tail off, so I’m hopeful. Can’t wait to see how he looks on the field. The team around him should be pretty good, so we’ll see what happens.
I’m hoping Griese turns out to be a solid coach. Shanahan loves him and he’s had a pretty good eye for coaches. More than anything, Lance just needs to play. He should get plenty of that this year.
They’ve been working on his delivery since week 1 I’ve heard. More than anything I think he needs to get accustomed to the speed of the pro game. and not revert to bad habits. He just doesn’t have a ton of reps, so hopefully this will help in changing his throwing motion. Heard good things about Griese, and Kyle is good at finding coaches, but as Ive said before, I fear for how Shanny uses Lance. We do not need to run him. Running should be saved for rare occasions. Have him stand in the pocket and move if need be.
Much as i can’t stand Pete Carroll, he used Wilson the right way his whole career. Few designed runs, but great use of his mobility to extend plays and get the ball downfield as the defense scatters.
As always, we keep the injury bug at bay and we should be a solid team. Trey’s growth is going to be fun to watch. I hope.
Derp! Alex Mack retires. Nothing like waiting till after free agency AND the draft to make your announcement.
New thread is up.
