Alex Mack announced his retirement today, a month AFTER the draft, and 2 months AFTER free agency. And 2 hours AFTER he restructured his contract to save the team $4 mill in cap space.
I’m sure they expected this to happen. There IS the possibility of throwing money at JC Tretter, or they may simply go with internal candidates; rookie Dohnovan Poe, journeyman Daniel Brunskill, or the guy who COVIDed out last year, Jake Brendel are all available and ready. Brendel received rave reviews before deciding to skip the season last year.
So, maybe this isn’t as big a deal as I thought. Or maybe it is. Just another little wrinkle in what is a seemingly needlessly fucking weird offseason. Still got Jimmy. National media is still fretting over why. Deebo still remains unsigned. Although no news is good news at this point. Don’t see an issue there.
And, Frank Gore signed a one-day contract and will officially retire as a 49er.
Much appreciation and kudos to Frank, who provided hundreds and hundreds of highlights among many seasons of fair to shitty football. Like Paul Hofer before him, he did get in some quality play with a good team, so there’s that. But the next stop for Frank is the Hall of Fame.
Yeah, bizarre about Mack. Why the hell didn’t he just announce it if he knew? He can’t have been on the fence all this time.
Gore has always been one of my all-time favorite 49ers, all the way back to when I was hoping like hell they’d draft him coming out of Miami. A true warrior and a good dude to boot. It’s only fitting that he retires as a Niner. Hall of Famer all the way.
He waited until his contract was restructured which helped the team financially. They knew Mack was gonna retire but they had to wait this long to get it done. I love it about Frank being a SF hall of famer. My guess is he will be a first ballot HOFer in what 4 more years. I also hope he get hired as scout and stays with the organization.
That at least makes sense. Now the Niners really need a center, the most important position on the line.
As of now I think we roll with Brendel.
Which begs the question, if they knew he was going to retire, why didn’t they do more to bring in an experienced free agent? It’s a tough position to play, especially as a rookie.
Brendel’s been around 5 years before skipping last season. He’s a decent vet.
That’s good. Didn’t know that about him. These long off seasons are killing me. I want to get this thing going and see what the team looks like on the field. It should be interesting, especially watching Lance grow and develop.
Exactly my point of view.
49ers had a chance the last 2 years to draft an aging Alex Mack so that’s on them ..Last year Center Creed Humphrey Chiefs stole that pick, now already an All Pro Center in his rookie year drafted 65th with a grade out of 91 !!
This year Cam Jurgens another potential steal for Eagles. These are 10 year foundation pieces.
Instead they have a journey man in Jake Breidel who’s bounced all over the league since 2016 and is just considered a backup. What’s the 49ers stupid thinking there?
They figure they can turn shit to gold at that position. Much like RB. But then why use a 3rd
Round draft pick there?
They confuse the shit out of me sometimes.
Makes you wonder who the hell is running the show…
It’s Shanny all the way. Lynch is pretty much a figure-head. He may have input on the defensive picks, but even that is measured I’m sure.
yep. Oline is just as important as Dline is. They must think they have someone in the wings already. I can’t think of who it is though.
6th rd nick zalick, creed Humphrey on the cheap. Smart, high ras, size of Alex Mack. No more collapsing pocket
Maybe that kid from ASU (West?). He’s supposed to be talented, but he’s still a UFDA. Tretter is still out there.
Dohnovan West.
What, if anything, they do regarding Tretter goes a long way to telling how they feel about their current crop of guys.
