The Season that Was

Well, for all intents and purposes, this season was a success. Believe it or not. The main goal of giving Trey Lance a red-shirt season worked, amid the fits and starts and injuries around Jimmy G and the whole team for that matter. The 49ers were a couple plays from the Super Bowl, which is what we were supposed to be. And we knocked Dallas and Green Bay out of the playoffs. No mean feat as they were both road wins. The Ram loss was a bitter pill to swallow, but as a team, we are young, talented, and hungry. I’ll put aside my animosity toward Kyle for the time being.

Jimmy said yesterday what the team wouldn’t, in that he has played his last down in a 49er uni. He hopes he is sent “to a team interested in winning.” Which I guess leaves out Houston. My landing spot was always gonna be Denver, as they are as desperate as any team, but they all off a sudden have major issues around the Brian Flores firing, and apparent sham head coaching interviews with Denver, Miami, and the New York Giants. All done to conform to the league and the Rooney Rule.

I’m thinking the upcoming Broncos sale is part and parcel with the impending fallout from this allegation of racist practices, so maybe Denver is out as a destination as horse-face and the entire Broncos organization is shit-canned in favor of a new ownership group and front office.

But that’s a different convo. Jimmy’s destinations still include New Orleans, Pittsburgh, Miami, the Giants, or possibly even the Jets, as they may want to get Zack Wilson out of harm’s way for a season while they try to build a better team around him before he gets killed out there.

My high-water mark would be a 2 and a 4. Given all the glowing reports from all Jimmy’s teammates, and the (relative) success the team had, you would think that he would get this in a trade. And it should happen pretty quickly. The teams looking for QBs are many, and the hope is that there is a bidding war for his services. Even if it is as a mentor for another highly drafted quarterback.

Hah! Snappy Khaki is back in the NFL as the new coach of the Minnesota Vikings. That should be good enough to get them into the playoffs seeing as how Harbs got something out of Young Sir Alex. He should be able to get Cousins there. But he will fall in the playoffs as he is wont to do.

Pre-80s ruined drum track vinyl 70s version.

    • Winder says:

It should be fun playing against him. Jimmy just said his goodbye’s this morning so here we go again turn the page. Can’t wait.

  2. unca_chuck says:

Harbaugh bails on Minnesota. Back to Michigan.

  3. alleykat69 says:

    Michigan should fire Harbaugh’s ass!

  4. unca_chuck says:

6 years, and he finally reached the college playoff thing. Of course he shit the bed, but hey. I guess it’s progress!

  5. Winder says:

    Just for fun.

The Florida Times-Union reports “the chatter” at the Senior Bowl is Bucs OC Byron Leftwich made it known he couldn’t work with Trent Baalke.
This is all conjecture that has been vaguely alluded to at this point, but here it is out in the open. All momentum was pointing towards the Jaguars hiring Leftwich in the middle of last week before he presented Adrian Wilson as a GM candidate and suggested he wouldn’t want to work with embattled current GM Baalke. The Jaguars are currently in a holding pattern as they try to find a head coach and GM who actually will want to work together, with the current heavy rumor being Rick Spielman, Doug Peterson, and Baalke employed but reporting to Spielman.

    • Winder says:

      I like Leftwich already.

    • unca_chuck says:

Yep. What is nuts is all these teams want to install, like we did, again, their head coach before getting a GM. In other words, making the HC spot more powerful than the GM position. Lynch certainly seems to be mainly a figurehead. The handshake guy who looks and sound great but isn’t really the guy making the decisions. This is all Shanahana’s team. I’m sure Lynch gets to provide input but Shanahan is the be-all end-all at decision time.

  6. NJ49ER says:

Gotta wonder how the Flores / Dolphins accusations might have impacted Harbaugh?
Stephen Ross is a major UM benefactor and was on record as not wanting to take Harbaugh from their program.
Now that Harbaugh made it known he’s willing to leave UM, could that open the Miami door and maybe keep McDaniel from leaving?
    Stay tuned….
Ross may be facing expulsion if the tank accusations are true.

    • Winder says:

Flores will get a nice payout and the NFL might tighten the rules. I don’t think they can sweep this one under the carpet so easy. Mainly because every fucking one knows it true. I am not even a little shocked about the tanking, teams have been doing it in all sports forever.

      • NJ49ER says:

I’d love to see Flores produce a piece of “tank” evidence, like a deposit/payment receipt of some sort.
Yes, we ALL know this shit goes on but, gambling being legal now might force Goodell’s hand, about Ross and, the old shield he’s there to protect. A true integrity test is on the table now, if ever there was one.

All Goodell gets paid for is to protect the old boys’ network anyway.
As Flores said, the plantation owners.

      • unca_chuck says:

You’d think these guys would be smarter than to leave any kind of paper trail, but then again, these guys think they are not beholden to normal rules and behavior.

  7. unca_chuck says:

Yep. I’m convinced Harbaugh did it to make it easier to get out of SF. Right after the Michigan job came available, we had that horrible loss to the Raiders. The rest of that season was a disaster as the Niners went 1-4 and dropped out of the playoffs

    • Winder says:

basically our whole offense was Gore up the middle with a few Hyde runs up the same.

      • Winder says:

once defenses figured out Kap he proved to be pretty useless.

      • unca_chuck says:

Well, Baalke also got rid of Crabtree, VD, and Gore. Jed was supposed to keep the team together when Kappy signed that team-friendly deal. He didn’t. Our offensive game plan consisted of the WRs running to the nearest DB and stopping.

  8. NJ49ER says:

    Ga Tech S….

Put him on the Draft list

  9. NJ49ER says:

    FB Connor Heyward Michigan State
Add him to the Draft list too

    • Berger says:

NJ- Get us some DBs and O linemen.

      • NJ49ER says:

Curious about the additions of Banks/Moore & McKivitz already Berger.
        McGlinchey is probably gone?
Banks to RG? McKivitz the swing T? Could Moore replace McGlinchey?
I’m still looking for the guy that replaces Mack.

Will Tartt rejoin Saleh here in NJ?
Hufanga already seeing action suggests he’s moving aliong. Can they afford to package Ward with Garoppolo to gain additional Cap space?
We have Lenoir and Thomas from this Draft class too. I’m leaning toward FA for a better CB than Norman at this point and still hoping Verrett has another year in the tank.

I’m poking around the Sr Bowl rosters and the Combine is on the radar now too.
Much as I wasn’t feeling the Draft without a 1st RD pick, it’s hard to ignore the shopping comparisons.

      • NJ49ER says:

Still wondering if Banks or Brendel cound be waiting behind Mack too?
We’ll see where they plan to go soon enough…..

  10. alleykat69 says:

I’d love to for the 49ers to go for a home run hitter in Patriots F/A potential JC Jackson.Only 25 and is definitely a game changer. In 62 career starts he has 25 interceptions!! Major upgrade for a secondary that needs an overhaul like the OL as well..

  11. unca_chuck says:

    Corners, and guards.

  12. alleykat69 says:

49ers hire former Chargers HC Anthony Lynn as an Assistant HC/RB?? I guess for now he’s replacing TE coach Embree who was told to take a 60% pay cut ( ouch so he walked)
Nice hire are the Niners doing this in anticipation of McDaniel getting the gig In Miami?
If McDaniel stays however by not getting the HC job does he just stay as Assistant HC and OC who doesn’t call the plays anyway as Shanahan is the play caller? I’m confused??

    • unca_chuck says:

This whole setup is odd. Kyle seems to be the head coach, run the offense, and runs the front office as well. I was thinking Lynch might bail for the TV job as rumored. He seems to be just a figurehead.

      • Winder says:

Lynch is good to have around. All the players respect him and I would think he has a lot on his plate. I think he is running the draft but has a lot of input from Peters, Shanny, and probably most of the coaches. Is there a rumor he wants out?

      • NJ49ER says:

Boomer Esiason here in WFAN NY was suggesting that Lynch was going back to TV.
I saw a press conference where Lynch denied it.

  13. NJ49ER says:

Top 2 DBs so far on my Draft List –
    (S) Juanyeh Thomas GA Tech 6’3″ 217 – Has KR/PR experience
    (S/CB) Verone McKinley III Oregon 5’11” 194 – 11 Ints

More guys/numbers to crunch when the Combine data gets posted –

  14. Winder says:

Looks like we lose McDaniel to Miami. I figured we would lose Peters and DeMeco but it looks like I was wrong. I think Miami has a lot of talent on their team but the FO might be in disarray.

    • alleykat69 says:

      Yeah Winder going to Miami..
The great news I heard from Tom Pellasario
is the 49ers receive TWO Third rd comp picks!!
I think because McDaniel is interracial ( black father) so it qualifies under the Rooney incentive program I assume?

      • Winder says:

Wow. We can use all the picks we can get. I guess one will be for this year and one for the next. Just guessing.

  15. NJ49ER says:

We’ve got a lot of FAs to handle on our side too.
Can’t resign them all, so future Comp picks potential, for losing some, also becomes a reality.
Gotta get younger and cheaper, the Draft is how to do it.

    • NJ49ER says:

Be nice to see McDaniel make a play to bring Jimmy to South Beach too.
Maybe we get a Pick or 2 back that we gave them for Trey?
I’d look for a pair of 2’s at this point.
Maybe even 29 this year and a 2nd in ’23?

      • 12th Man says:

        I’m guessing a 2 and a 4 this year.
A 1 is not impossible with a late round pick going the other way if a team is desperate enough.

      • NJ49ER says:

        12th it’s all about supply & demand.
Stephen Ross is a 9er wannabe and, being in the spotlight.
He will spend the money to be relevant.
If McDaniel wants Jimmy over Tua I can see Lynch pushing to recoup some lost capital.
Even better if Pitt starts a bidding war.

AFC East is upside down now with all the coaching changes.
Ross would love to have Jimmy to torment Bill I’d guess.
Nothing is impossible when an attention starved owner wants to be noticed, especially with all the Flores publicity in the conversation.

  16. Irish Kevin says:

Well Football keeps letting things go all for the money, Washington owner being investigated for sexual harassment, special committee wants all of the NFL evidence they have collected. Why the hell don’t they just shit can Snyder? That would be the right thing to do. And now they are dealing with the race issue. Total cluster fuck.

  17. unca_chuck says:

If it was anyone but the owner, they’d be toast of course. But money talks, bullshit walks. The league forcing a sale would be hard to swallow. Though the NBA did it with Stirling.

  18. NJ49ER says:

We also have to be ready for McDaniel to poach additional coaching and FA assets.
    Mostert is a FL native.
Laken may want to go to FL where taxes are less severe etc.
We’re Cap challenged, until we unload Jimmy’s money.
That doesn’t help Lynch, and his bargaining position.

In the end, lost FAs this year, equates to Comp picks next year.
Can’t keep them all and, not much room to shop outside, until money is recouped.

    • Winder says:

I think most of our FA’s would want to stay if possible. We will know when the time comes. If Lance is who we though he is then I doubt we lose to many FA’s.

  19. unca_chuck says:

Hey if we can trade Mostert and Jimmy G for draft capital, I’m all in. best-case is a 1, and a couple 2s and 3s.

  20. unca_chuck says:

    Ahhhh. Mostert’s a free agent.

    • Winder says:

Mostert might now have as much value to other teams as he has to us. There was a reason he bounced around for so long. It’s the scheme we run and he just want to stay. But he gets hurt a lot now and that is troublesome.

  21. unca_chuck says:

Mostert was a fringe special teamer before his breakthrough with us. He’s worth a lot more to another team than us as we ain’t gonna pay him starter money when we have Mitchell. I think we let Mostert walk since Mitchell did such a good job and we have Wilson and Sermon.

    • Winder says:

Could be about Mostert. But Mitchell was getting hurt also and Sermon has been invisible. Wilson missed most of the year too. We need to find a RB that can hold up. I really don’t have a clue as to what our plan is I just hope we can keep the locker room at the same level as this year.

Tom Brady: I’m Not Looking To Come Out Of Retirement, But Never Say Never

  23. Irish Kevin says:

Speaking of QBs, who should the Niners go after as a backup QB? This is from Niners Nation

This is actually a fairly decent market for backup quarterbacks, with the likes of Andy Dalton, Tyrod Taylor, Mitch Trubisky, Teddy Bridgewater, Marcus Mariota and others available.”

    • NJ49ER says:

Seems Tyrod and Lynn are connected Irish Kevin.
I’d buy that angle for now.
More concerned about the replacement plan for McDaniel, Embryo and Hightower right now.

Joe Judge being courted by BB to return to Pats and, Bisachia went to GB.

  24. Irish Kevin says:

There is a good article in the Athletic about who the Niners should draft. It is long, Chuck let me know if you want me to copy and paste since not all everyone subscribes to this site

  25. unca_chuck says:

Let me put up a new thread and you can post it there.

  26. unca_chuck says:

New thread is up. Post it there, Irish. Thanks
