Commence Holding Breath – Meanwhile Kittle Signs

Well, the NFL is all set to kick off in 29 days. Thursday night September 10 is the official kickoff to the 2020 season, pitting the Houston Morons vs the Kansas City Chiefs. Should be a good one that Houston will lose. We of course play the beneficiaries of Bill O’Brien’s utter stupidity in the Arizona Cardinals. They of course traded DeAndre Hopkins for a washed up David Johnson. They also jettisoned Carlos Hyde, who had a pretty solid year for the Houstons. So, they traded arguably one of the top 3 WRs in the league for a lousy replacement to a better RB in Hyde, and got a 2nd round pick.

So, we have a very tough opening game, at home at least, against what looks to be a very improved Cardinals team. One that we, and many other teams, struggled to beat last year, despite their 5-10-1 record. That is of course pending the Coronavirus threat hanging over everything and everyone. Baseball has a bunch of teams on hold while the players do stupid shit like going to strip clubs and such in insanely stupid states like Georgia, but they are playing on.

Basketbubble is going just fine as no players so far have broken the bubble (take the bottle, shake it up. Break the bubble, break it uuuuup. Pour some . . .). Football? Well, there have been 59 cases with players, and 2 dozen or so coaches and staff, but nothing recently. Anthony Lynn admitted he tested positive a while ago, and 66 players have opted out.

This includes 49er O linemen Jake Brendel and Shon Coleman, and WR Travis Benjamin; for various reasons. So, as of now it is all systems go, and the league office said there is a very slim chance that things will get bad enough to warrant a cancellation of the season. But as we have seen so far, this can change on a dime.

Maybe this will wake Bergs up . . .

  2. unca_chuck says:

Or this. The top of my gray head makes its appearance at 2:23.

Wow. Pretty big deal for Stone Cold George. But hey, he’s a big part of our success. Next year will be a challenge to keep the band together.

According to the unnamed source, it will be a six-year extension worth $94.8 million — or $15.8 million per season. Tthe 49ers guaranteed half of it, or $47.4 million. Kittle will also get a $25 million signing bonus, and the 49ers will work his deal in such a way that he only costs them $10 million of their cap space in 2021.

Team friendly as most of these big deals are, but he gets a lot guaranteed.

49er O lineman in the 6s Howard Mudd dies of his injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. 78 and still riding. Gotta love the commitment. All I remember of him is his being traded to the Bears for DB Rosey Taylor.

    • Winder says:

I remember him mostly because of his name and that he was a hard-nosed football player. RIP

      • Grumpy Guy says:

He made several pro bowls. I remember him dimly from my early years. Of course, the 49ers had crazy O-line depth back then. He was replaced by Woody Peoples, who was pretty damned good; just as Bruce Bosley (sometimes pro-bowler) was replaced by Forrest Blue (perennial pro bowler), and John Thomas (1966 pro bowler) was replaced by Elmer Collett (pro bowler) who was replaced by Randy Beisler (one of the “Protectors” in ’70, and Walter Rock was replaced by Cas Banaszek.

Man, I wish we had that line depth now.

Kittle is signed. Less that the above extension, but he gets a lot of guaranteed money.

The 49ers and Kittle are in agreement on a five-year, $75 million extension, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport and NFL Network’s Michael Silver reported. Of the $75 million total, more than half of it is made up of guarantees, per Rapoport, with $30 million guaranteed at signing, $40 million guaranteed for injury and $18 million arriving via signing bonus.

Great deal for both the Niners and Kittle locking in the Best TE in football at a reasonable price!!

  7. Winder says:

I like what we have been doing the last few days. We picked up a couple of OL’s and signed Kittle. If Jet, Hurd, and Taylor are healthy we should be pretty much unstoppable.

  8. unca_chuck says:

Yeah, they have been strengthening the bench in key areas. Despite Reed and a couple injuries, I think we should be in great shape going forward.

  9. unca_chuck says:

Hurd is my x factor. I think he’s gonna prove to be the real deal.

    • Winder says:

i think Hurd and Aiyuk will change the way we do things compared to last year. And don’t forget we got that big 7th rd pick Jauan Jennings. Defenses are really gonna have to watch those guys.

Got to protect up front. Name of the game these days.

To me they were always the best ciggs.

    • unca_chuck says:

Marlboro Reds and Camel filters were my go-to smokes.

      • Winder says:

Yeah, i started out a Kool smoker, switched to Marlboro’s. But to treat myself i would pick up a pack of camels or Pall Mall unfiltered. i could smoke em for a few days but they were just a little to strong to do it regular. i quit in 97, one of the hardest things i ever did.

  12. unca_chuck says:

Yep. Quit in 1/1/1999. Bet a guy $1,000 I could quit for a year. I did it and he moved out of town in October.

  13. Grumpy Guy says:

Jalen Hurd having an MRI this morning. Possible torn ACL.

Some guys cannot catch a break.

  14. unca_chuck says:

Fuck. Dude can’t catch a break.

  15. unca_chuck says:

I guess we’ll find out tomorrow.
