In the last couple days, the 49ers added:
— LB Dee Ford (trade; Kansas City)
— RB Tevin Coleman (UFA; Atlanta)
— CB Jason Verrett (UFA; L.A. Chargers)
— LB David Mayo (UFA; Carolina)
— WR Jordan Matthews (UFA; Philadelphia)
The4y have also re-upped:
— DB Jimmie Ward (UFA)
— G Mike Person (UFA)
— LS Kyle Nelson (UFA)
–DB Antone Exum (UFA)
—LB Elijah Lee (EFA)
We franchised Robbie (good as) Gould
They lost: Garcon, Pinion, Morris and Earl Mitchell among others.
So far, I’m pretty pleased with this offseason. We didn’t fall for the sucker bets of ODB or puffy-chest. They apparently did go pretty hard after Le’Veon Bell ($38 million offer), but still got Tevin Coleman, a solid runner who can catch passes, and offers a less fragile approach to running back. I like the Jordan matthew signing. He’s a big WR who can play outside. We have enough slot WRs to fill 2 rosters. I love Matthews size.
Defensively we seem to be going after turnover guys ball-hawkers. Ford caused 8 fumbles last year, and Alexander is another fast LB that can cover and hopefully cause turnovers himself. Jason Verritt is a great, if injured, CB. He needs to stay on the field but he’s on a prove-it one year deal. He’s coming off an achilles rupture like his CB counterpart Richard Sherman. david Mayo? Don’t know too much about him other than he’s a special-teams guy.
I was leery at the start of this with the Alexander signing, but these other moves are solid and they provide needed depth at key positions.
We definitely filled some holes and hopefully this regime has better luck the injured players. I like the Matthews deal also but I think we just might pick a WR in the early rds. Anyway, I can’t really bitch to much about what we have been doing.
28 TDs with 0 fumbles lost, 2016-2018
9 TDs 2018
You betcha. Tevin Coleman
Yeah, we seemed to fumble continually last year, maybe Tevin can show the others how it’s done.
And we were down to our 5th string RB. These guys need to stay on the field. McKinnon especially. If he can’t get through the year, we need to cut him loose. I hope he can prove me wrong, but I just don;t think he can withstand the punishment.
Either that or they use him judiciously. Which is an awfully hefty paycheck for a part time guy.
If we don’t use our 2 or 3 on a WR I will be surprised.
Me too.
This team is in desperate need for a #1 WR. Matthews should be a solid get, but we still need a big play guy.
That’s the rub for me Chuck, regarding Kwon.
ACLs usually cost a step. Minimum. Speed now in question.
No one was likely to throw that sort of money his way IMO. Way Overpaid.
He was never a sound tackler to begin with.
Statiscally near the bottom.
Would have rather thrown that money at Earl.
He would have been an immediate fit.
Let’s see what comes….Call me skeptical.
I agree we overpaid for Kwon but since you are talking statistics, Tampa was 2 tenths of a percent better vs the run when he was in the game vs when he was out and I forget the QB rating difference but is was substantial. Shanny had to game plan against him and said he made the mistake of not accounting for him. He said it cost him a game in Atlanta. The kid is obviously a playmaker. We don’t get turnovers, we need playmakers.
I heard on the radio on Thursday a couple of former players who played against him saying this was a great move by the 49ers. We will soon find out.
NJ- Try to be happy. If we do suck this will be your only time to feel good! 🙂
Once again who really cares how much these guys get paid. If they don’t play good they won’t be around very long. Kwon signed a very team friendly contract on a 1 year prove it. It’s a good gamble, the only problem is we have lost most of the good gambles lately.
Correction, Kwon might have signed a longer contract but the Niners can get out of it after the 1st year without losing much of anything.
Paraag does these deals over and over. Big splash news contracts that when broken down are almost always 1 year deals, sometimes 2, with the team controlling the length of the deal following the actual guaranteed portion (not injury guaranteed). He is a very shrewd negotiator.
Some Sunday morning music
NJ- I’ve been wondering about a CB named Juan Thornhill. What ya got on him?
He’s on my radar Berger –
CB
Isaiah Johnson – Houston – 6’2″/208 – 4.40 36.5″ Vert (115 Tkls/4 Ints)
Juan Thornhill – UVA – 6’0″/205 4.42 21 Reps 44″ Vert (208 Tkls/13 Ints)
Will Harris – BC – 6’1″/207 4.41 36.5″ Vert (225 Tkls/5 Ints)
Sheldrick Redwine – Miami – 6’0″/196 4.44 39″ Vert (164 Tkls/5 Ints)
Sean Bunting – CMI – 6’0″/195 4.42 14 Reps 41.5″ Vert (104 Tkls/9 Ints)
Amani Hooker – Iowa – 5’11″/210 4.48 14 Reps 37″ Vert (125 Tkls/6 Ints)
That vertical jumps right off the page! So does 13 ints.
Frank doing one of the best jams ever. Terry Bozio on drums and the stand up bass solo by Patrick O’Hearn is outstanding.
Almost included him as a potential FS too –
FS
Darnell Savage – Maryland – 5’11″/198 4.36 39.5″ Vert (182 Tkls/8 Ints)
Marvell Tell – USC – 6’2″/198 – 42″ Vert (220Tkls – 5 Ints)
Chauncey Gardner-Johnson – UF – 5’10″/210 4.48 36″ Vert (161 Tkls/9 Ints)
Saquan Hampton – Rutgers – 6’1″/206 4.48 14 Reps (167 Tkls/4 Ints)
Marquise Blair – Utah – 6’1″/195 4.48 35″ Vert (106 Tkls/8 Ints)
Kwon’s deal is team-friendly so I have no problem with that. Yes it’s a risk, but everyone in the NFL is at risk to lose a season or career. Look at Jimmy G last year. Aaron Rodgers a couple years ago, or any number of guys who go down every fricking game. You don’t take risks, you don’t get better.
And thanks as always for your diligent draft work, NJ. Getting close to draft day.
Call it an obsession Chuck 😀
Happy to share
Way more fun these days, with the Internet providing so much access and information.
I need to find a paying job to do this stuff 😀
Start a blog! The fun, excitement, and money is overwhelming at times.
Before I turned off advertising, I think I made a grand total of $37.00 in 6 months. Woo hoo!
44″ vertical? Damn. Works for me. We would need to trade up out of the 2nd to get him I’d think,
Got to say Skeevies is really up on our chances this year. He bitches, moans, and prevaricates about how shitty we are and then calls for a 10-6 season to cover his bases.
Waffle House is missing a chef.
Fucking Rams are getting Clay Matthews. I know he’s been around forever but he has been a thorn in our side a few times.
He’s done.
Berger I caught an interview today with Quinnen during the ‘Bama Pro Day.
He admitted to ‘beefing up’ just to get into the D-line rotation.
He was a DE that got overshadowed by the extremely deep roster in Saban’s program and, wanted playing time. Seems to me, he can shed some weight and get back on the edge if necessary.
Between He and Bosa, I’m going with Quinnen, assuming we can’t/won’t deal down.
I’d even consider OLB Allen before Bosa.
Don’t buy the hype…. 😀
Watch Bosa’s video. If you can say it is hype with a straight face after watching you should moonlight as a comedian.
BTW, I watched video on Jaylon Ferguson. The guy looked every bit as good as Bosa but he wasn’t going against the same level of competition. I then watched his film vs LSU. Against that competition he did not perform well. He got a sack and a couple pressures but he got run over two times in row and was not much of a factor most of the time. Overall, I like him a lot. He needs some time to get stronger. His instincts and athleticism are excellent. The difference between he and Bosa is Bosa is ready to line up in the pros now.
Nothing I’ve seen suggests he’s Haley-esque Berger.
Simply a matter of opinion.
I’m not sold, especially at Pick 2 levels.
Being the Draftnik I am, I see more value for the slot.
If forced to stay there and select, he’s not my preference.
See how it plays out in a few weeks 😀
Nickel – 70% of D snaps:
Ford-Buckner-Thomas/AA?-Bosa
Me likey. Niners’ brass having dinner with Bosa tonight. Woot!
I know it’s the fucking Packers but I thought it was interesting
New thread is up.
