Nothing To See Here, Move Along . . .

Scrub-fest tonight in Santa Clara. The Walmart Brigade, whatever you want to call it, but of the current 86 players on the roster, 33 o them will be out of jobs, or a few young guys will be sent to the taxi squad. I suppose I’ll watch some of it mainly to see if CJ can get out of his mini-doldrums. He’s been kinda spotty this preseason, as has just about every other aspect of the team. Too many drops, too many penalties, too little pass rush, too little run game. Way too little red zone success.

But that’s why they call it preseason. Aluminum Mike Singletary used to say a win is a win is a win, whether preseason or regular season. You need to practice winning whatever the meaning. Which is why Aluminum Mike is out of coaching.  Unless you call the Alliance of American Football a thing.

But I digress. If anything, I’d just like to see a clean game. Greg Kittle, Matt Brieda, and Jerick McKinnon haven’t played at all, and won’t be tonight, so how they integrate in Minnesota in 10 days remains a mystery. As is our pass rush. Salomon Thomas sure looked solid with Armstead in there with him to take the blocking load off his side, and they’ve shown flashes of greatness, but I’m not getting the vibe that this team is completely on the same page.

Then again, they haven’t really been at full strength and played more than a few series together. Again, though, if they get out of their own way and nix the drops, I feel like this team will surprise people.

10 more days!

Willing to bet Joe Williams comes back?
    PS eligible?
Should be a busy weekend in terms of waiver claims etc.

Interestingly it hasn’t been for the Niners, thats a confident Management team to stand basically PAT. Still time I guess.

My instinct was that Williams is done in SF. He hadn’t really shown enough to even be considered for the PS, even with McKinnon going down.

I think Shanny likes him too, He’s an intriguing prospect, raw but with some good tools already, blocking and pass catching. He’s big too. Real happy he landed on the PS. I’m a little surprised more than one OL didn’t end up there.

I did not realize that Jerrick McKinnon and Matt Breida both played at Georgia Southern.

Some positivity in the wake of McKinnon’s season-ending injury:

    GO 49ERS!

Zach Golditch has an interesting Bio –
Talk about a brush with death….

OL Zach Golditch (6-5, 295, Colorado State)
Golditch originally signed with the L.A. Chargers as an undrafted rookie. He played 19 snaps for the Chargers against the 49ers on Thursday. Golditch is a survivor of the 2012 mass shooting at a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado. He was struck in the neck by a bullet that went through a wall between his theater and the theater where the shooting occurred.

This is worth checking out. They have the Niners kind of where I’m thinking they’ll end up, 8 wins, but with a chance for 9 or 10 if they can stay healthy (a big if with this team) and if Jimmy G continues to develop like we all hope he will. The secondary remains a concern.

I personally feel like Solly Thomas is going to step up big time this year. Whether he attains the status accorded a #3 pick remains to be seen, but he’s looked far more advanced throughout OTA’s and camp this year, not to mention that he’s stronger after an off-season in the weight room. If he’s good, as well as Armstead, Buckner figures to break out. He’s already one of the highest rated interior linemen in the league.

I am going 8-8 for the year. If we are lucky and the ball bounces our way a couple of times I can see 9 wins. It’s the injuries that will kill us and you know we are gonna get some. Anyway, we are in such a better place that we’ve been in for a long time. Even at 8-8 I bet we see a whole lot of exciting ball this year.

  9. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

I think we could get to 10 wins if we can start fast. Pie last year we have a tough early schedule but an easier sched late.

St Jim may be fired if this season goes south. And it’s starting to feel that way.

This is a brutal week of waiting. I don’t feel all that great about having to go to MN and play that team in the first game, but I’m just ready for the season to start. Really stoked this year.
