All Quiet on the Western Front

We are practicing (and fighting) with the Texans this week, and other than the fight between Jimmie Ward and DeAndre Hopkins (who was then ejected rom practice), there’s not much to report.  Other than that, safety Terrell Williams ‘slightly’ injuring his knee, there is not much to report.

Speaking of balls deep. The Jimmy G deep passing game is still floating out there in the stratosphere. These have been somewhat allayed by many connections with Marquise Goodwin in practice, but Garoppolo still thinks that, like his whole game, it is a work in progress. He holds himself to high standards, as does Shanahan, so I think the passing game should be fine. The WRs look a hell of a lot better than in recent memory, and the progress is evident to those watching. I guess.

Anyhow, game 2 is coming up against these very same Texans, so expect a few more fights as these guys get tired of facing each other.

I doubt we will see very much this Saturday. I think the plan is to get everyone some reps. I have a feeling we will see some really good football from Jimmy but I also think we are gonna see quite a few interceptions. It looks to me that we have the best core of WR’s that we have had in many years. I am waiting for the 3rd game where our 1st string should play at least a full quarter.

Per Shanahan, don’t expect to see much more than last week from Jimmy G. No real surprise there. No sense putting him in harm’s way I guess. Beathard and Mullens again. They need to get the running game going and find some kind of pass rush.

Garoppolo sure is a likable guy. Every interview he does is full of grins and jokes. Coming off the sourpuss Kaepernick years, it’s refreshing. The press has to love him. It seems like a night-and-day locker room from the Harbaugh years.

From the Niner’s website, after today’s practice with Houston. I thought this was cool, coming from one of the best wideouts in the league:

    1. Dante Pettis had another strong day. The rookie seemed to be open the entire practice. Pettis dominated 1-on-1s and had a long catch down the left sideline from Jimmy Garoppolo during team drills. He also beat the Texans secondary deep down the middle of the field but was underthrown by C.J. Beathard.

In a cool moment after practice, DeAndre Hopkins approached Pettis and gave him some love as they shook hands.

“I like your game, man. I like your game,” Hopkins said.

Pettis was understandably pumped, given that the two hadn’t chatted up till that point and they spent practice on separate fields.

Nice. I imagine Houston kinda likes the name Pettis since pop’s works for the Astro’s. The way it looks is if he is tough enough to take some hits he will be a really good WR in he NFL.

      • Lurker John's avatar Lurker John says:

Yeah, I think he’s tougher than his build might suggest. He could stand to put of some muscle, which I’m sure the Niners training staff is working on. He’s a good punt returner too, really good at the UW.

Very cool, LJ. Pettis looks like the real deal all the way. He gets his as open all the time. His pops played for the Astros. OFer I think?

High praise from Hopkins. H’e a bona fide stud WR.

Watch ward vs. hopkins at 11:48 lol

Gary Pettis spent his best years with the Halos. He was never much of a hitter, but he was a 5-time Gold Glove centerfielder who made any number of spectacular, highlight-reel catches. He was also fast as hell and an excellent base stealer. I got to see him quite a bit on TV when we lived in Goleta, where we got Dodgers and Angels broadcasts.

I’m stoked about his kid, though. He’s having a heck of a camp! The Niner wideouts should be markedly better this year, and that’ll be a welcome sight, especially with Jimmy G throwing to them.

I was watching some of the Jets-Redskins game last night, and Rashard Robinson had a horrible game, as well jawing with the officials. I wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up getting cut.

  9. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

He had such promise. Glad we dumped him.

  10. I know you guys never talk about it but Roger Goodell and the feckless owners have ruined America’s favorite pastime for millions of Americans. I pray it hurts them in the only place where they feel pain: their financial bottom line. Sad but no ones talking about it but the York’s thinking about money over the game and it’s great traditions created this mess by doing nothing when Kaepernick was acting like a worthless punk. Eddie or Walsh wouldn’t have put up with Kaepernicks antics, not for one moment. I never thought I would be forced to choose between my love of pro football and fidelity to the patriotic traditions I was raised on, but now that it comes to that, it’s a very easy choice. The NFL loses.

Speaking of injuries, Terrell Williams to the IR. Niners sign Dexter McCoil. He of the Los Angeles Kiss of the arena football league. Huzzah. Dumpster diving already.

  12. Lurker John's avatar Lurker John says:

It’s such a crap shoot with injuries during preseason. You practically hold your breath until the season starts. You just never know who might get it or when. Roster depth might be the single most important thing a football team can have, and the Niners have done a good job of improving that and in a short amount of time. You can tell that Shanny and Lynch value it as well. It needs to continue, and will, but it’s night and day from where it was when those guys came in.

    • Lurker John's avatar Lurker John says:

Depth was also a hallmark of the Walsh years. The 49ers always seemed to have good players who could come off the bench and get the job done. Walsh is arguably the greatest evaluator of football talent in the history of the game. IMO, he is the best, bar none.

    The running game still sucks

Niners unable to handle a guy they cut. Just carving them up.

  16. Berger's avatar Berger says:

I’ve seen enough of Beathard. I want to see more of Mullens

  17. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

These penalties are ludicrous. Esp .the leading with the head to initiate contact. Attachou’s penalty was terrible. No calls on 2 shots to Beathard’s head, and an incidental brush on Weeden gets called.

I’ve seen enough of Joe Williams.

    • Winder's avatar Winder says:

If he doesn’t get something going by next week he is probably gone.

      • unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Yeah, they’ll keep him until cut down day and when Brieda and McKinnon are back, he’ll go.

I’m curious to see if Mullens gets 2nd team reps next week. I’ve see too many tipped passes by BeatHard, He’s tough and all, but he isn’t progressing very much.

  18. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

And the refs blow the call at the end of the game. At least they didn’t go to overtime,

  19. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

15 penalties for 140. 5 were shit calls tho. I guess the refs need their preseason too.

  20. Berger's avatar Berger says:

DJ Jones was dominant What a pleasant surprise. He and Day were taking care of business. They were one gapping, they were two gapping. They were pushing opponents into the play, disengaging and making plays. Very impressive!
