Day II of the Draft

Well, I don’t think too many people saw that coming. Mike McGlinchey, OT out of Notre Dame, and teammate of the first offensive lineman to go in the draft, Quentin Nelson, was our pick at the 9 spot. Early yesterday morning, Joe Lo and Dibbs were saying that the Raiders were very high on McGlinchey and that he was their guy after weeks of linebacker/corner talk for them.

And, seeing as the Raiders traded down once he was off the board lends creedence to that thought. And the Raiders still took an OT in Kolton Miller out of UCLA.

John Lynch apparently had this guy on his radar the whole time, and said he wouldn’t have taken Roquan Smith even of he was available. Lynch ha this to say about McGlinchey.

“He’s got a special presence to him,” Lynch said. “He’s real, he’s authentic and he’s a bad-ass. And we like that.”

Sounds good to me. But not to Trent Brown. If I had a guess, I’d say that Brown, a very good tackle, but not the most nimble guy, isn’t a fit in Kyle Shanahan’s zone blocking scheme. And, given that we signed Jerick McKinnon, we are looking at faster tackles to run outside, and pass to the flat.

Day 2? We don’t pick until 59 so i have no clue what we do, but WR, CB, and LB  wouldn’t surprise me. Then we get right back on the horse at 70 and 74 so there will be some excitement today.

    Happy birthday, ROB!!!!!!!!!

    Woo hoo!

  2. Rob says:

It just keeps on coming Chuck. First Mcglinchey , second and two thirds tonight and rounds 4-7 for my birthday ! Doesn’t get much better !

  3. Nipper says:

Now for the real work of the draft the second round arrives. Yesterday was a surprise typical of the Lynch method of drafting. Few predicted yesterdays pick.

  4. Nipper says:

Barrows claims Brown traded to NE for a third round pick. Damn things are moving fast!

    • NJ49er says:

We gave Trent and Pick 143 to Pats for Pick 95 tonight.
Nice deal as Trent was a 7th RDer.
      3 3rds tonight.
Ammo to deal up? Stay tuned…

  5. Lurker John says:

I guess the plan vis a vis McGlinchey has been revealed. Meet your new starting right tackle. I’m not sure how he’s an upgrade, but what do I know.

  6. alleykat69 says:

Think Trent Brown doesn’t fit in Shanny’s athletics mobile lineman schemes, not a good run blocker as well. Slide McGlinchey in his spot at RT which some say is his better position.4 picks now today digging that..

  7. NJ49er says:

Be happy with Joe Noteboom or Braden Smith tonight.
    Even Brian O’Neil from Pitt

  8. Nipper says:

A trading partner is a key to drafting positions that should not be underestimated.

  9. Lurker John says:

Seems risky to me to throw an unproven rookie right into the mix against elite NFL pass rushers. Hope this guy is the real deal, else Jimmy G is going to take some unnecessary shots.

    • Irish Kevin says:

Well at 6’8” he better hold up, watching the film they showed of him it looks like he has good technique.

  10. unca_chuck says:

T Brown has struggled with weight problems and he usu plays at between 350 and 370.

McGlinchey is the same height (6’7″) but he’s 310. Much more athletic. So, we get thei 3rd round pick for our 5th. Seems a little lopsided in their favor, but seeing as we got Jimmy G for a song . . .

    • Winder says:

Yeah, we might have made a new BF in NE. Brown if he can stay healthy will make a good deal for them he is still a kid and could turn out to be pretty good.

    • alleykat69 says:

Yeah we owed the Pats a bone for the Jimmy G heist.. Trent Brown = Bubba Paris days even Bill got sick& tired of his act coming into camp fat…

    • Lurker John says:

Is he? Because the scuttlebutt on Brown has always been that he’s tremendously athletic, especially given his size. He couldn’t be a good pass blocker if he wasn’t. I still say it’s a risk. Until he goes up against the best, we’ll have no idea what we have in McGlicnchey, and the NFC West is pretty well loaded with great edge rushers.

      • unca_chuck says:

It isn’t the pass blocking they are worried about. It is his ability to move on the runs. We got a fast outside rusher in McKinnon. We need mobile tackles to run block.

      • Lurker John says:

Got it. We’ll see if Belichick can put the fear of God in Brown, because that guy isn’t going to tolerate guys showing up fat for OTA’s every year.

  11. NJ49er says:

    Tartt extended today for 2yrs

  12. Lurker John says:

So, pick #59 is our first one today. Any thoughts?

  13. unca_chuck says:

Might go CB with the 2nd round pick. A good press corner out there is Carlton Davis. Good size and speed. 6’1″ 205.

  14. alleykat69 says:

    McGlincty’s New Jersey #69 Nice!!

  15. alleykat69 says:

How about that kid from Washington St Hercules Maa’ta killer name maybe convert him to a LB? Played DE in college but at 252lbs,not sure what rd he’s graded for but could be a steal..

  16. Winder says:

Fucking Cleveland is scoring like crazy.

  17. Flavor says:

seems like we could use help elsewhere. Not understanding the Pettis pick.

  18. Winder says:

My understanding is he’s Trent Taylor 2.0. Someone who’s really fast and will cause defenses to pay attention.

  19. Winder says:

Yeah, this draft is not going the way I thought it would but they must really like these two guys a lot.

  20. unca_chuck says:

WR? We need help there. Pettis is a versatile guy. He’s played outside, in the slot, and even out of the backfield. Taylor was alright, but this guy is better.

  21. unca_chuck says:

    I liked Oliver the CB.

  22. Lurker John says:

Seems like a pretty squared away kid.

  23. unca_chuck says:

LB. That pick makes sense. A pursuit guy.

  24. unca_chuck says:

    Still no pass rusher.

  25. Lurker John says:

Fred Warner? Another guy I know nothing about.

  26. unca_chuck says:

Now, sure, But just wait. He’ll be the next Patrick Willis. Shit I don’t know. I;m amazed at the fact that they have footage ready and dialogue around all these picks.Mayock knows 1600 guys through every round?

  27. Winder says:

I never heard of him either but you can see the pattern of the type of players we are drafting. All fast and very mobile and I would guess KS system fits.

  28. unca_chuck says:

    Yeah we are getting quicker.

  29. Lurker John says:

Tarvarius Moore, very skinny safety. Evidently he’s fast.

  30. unca_chuck says:

Yeah, he could very well play corner. He’s supposedly very quick to change directions and could probably play there. He’d need to get 15 lb bigger to play safety.

  31. unca_chuck says:

    New thread is up.
