Free Agency and the Draft

Don;t worry, Bergs, I’ll bring that Watchtower video to this thread. Cool stuff. I hadn’t seen that before. Anyhow, speaking of free agency and the draft, the team’s needs are obvious. In no particular order, they are:

  • Wide Receiver
  • Cornerback
  • Guard
  • Pass Rusher
  • (Possibly) Inside Linebacker (if Reuben is cut)
  • (Possibly) Running Back (if Carlos isn’t re-signed)

Given that free agency starts on March 14th, we will start getting answers soon. There are a shit-ton of WRs out there, as well as some top flight CBs as well. I would like to see a mix of draft picks and free agents for these spots. By the time 9 rolls around, any number of the guys they want could be gone. So holding out hope for one guy is not really an option. The backup plans will be in full play.

Given that, I have no idea. Trumaine Johnson and Kyle Fuller are fully viable options at CB that would instantly improve the secondary. Denzel Ward is also a possibility in the draft. Get one FA and one Ward, and our CBs are pretty solid. WR? There are a boatload available in free agency. Two of the top guys, Jarvis Landry and Josh Gordon, are super head-cases. Landry isn’t the suspension machine that Gordon is, so I’d pass on these guys. Marquise Lee from the Jags could be an under-the-radar guy who shines in a more prolific offense, and Allen Robinson, another Jag, could be big here.

Shit, I don’t know. The options are endless, and even the pros get this shit all wrong.

I think our first pick is . . .

  • Tremaine Edwards – (if Reuben Foster goes down) –
  • Denzel Ward – (if not)

It’s all about FA now. The draft board will be fluid until draft day so who really knows what’s up. Cleveland is gonna take the one guy I really want so i don’t really care what we do. I think whoever Lynch picks will have a lot of thought and research into it.The top tier FA’s are gonna be real expensive and I have a feeling that we will do what we did last year. We gave Garcon and Juscheck nice paydays but kind of went a little thrifty for the most part. I think Jax is gonna tag Robinson, he is the only WR FA that I would want. Don’t know what the Rams are gonna do with their WR but I think dude is a head case.

  2. NJ49er says:

CB is a very expensive position on the FA Mkt, as would be OG in a very limited Mkt.
If a reasonable deal could be made with Fuller or Johnson, NP.
I’m leaning toward the Draft for WR/OL early with the possibility of dropping back a few slots for a an extra 2nd if one comes along.

Ward at 9 makes sense if QNelson is gone.
No issues with Edmunds either as he could be used in space until he can develop some pass rush skills.
Truthfully, there really aren’t any sure fire DEs this year.
I would spend heavy for DeLawrence in Dallas if they don’t protect him.
There’s depth at DB/DT with some solid options at ILB further down the Board too.
Grab the ‘rare’ player at 9 and go from there.

  3. NJ49er says:

Shanny has downplayed the need for the ‘Big WR’ to the media but….A guy like EqStB from ND is pretty ‘rare’ IMO.
Doubt he’s 9th Pick kinda rare but, he was underutilized in College and, could be a nice weapon for us.
Be nice if Lynch could get himself higher in the 2nd RD to make up for the Pick used on Jimmy.
Very possible to grab that sort of Pick if someone is desperate to buy our 9-slot too.
Should be an interesting Top 10.

  4. NJ49er says:

Winder don’t sweat Barkley too much. He’s as rare as it gets in terms of the RB position. I’m thinking AP kinda rare.
We’ll do well with a RB in the Mid-Late RDs this year, if Shanny goes there. It’s another group that has some solid value IMO.

    • Winder says:

NJ- I knew we weren’t gonna get him a long time ago. It was just one of my wishes. I hope Cleveland finally gets it right this time.

  5. NJ49er says:

PSU TE Mike Gesicki looks solid too, if Shanny wants another TE on the roster.
He’ll go high though I’m sure.

Last week, Tony Pauline of Draft Analyst reported that the San Francisco 49ers would likely be the Oakland Raiders’ primary competition for Los Angeles Rams cornerback Trumaine Johnson once free agency begins on March 14.

On Monday, Pauline reported the 49ers to be the front-runners for Johnson.

“As previously posted last week, Trumaine Johnson is likely to end up with the San Francisco 49ers,” writes Pauline, who has been reporting from the NFL Scouting Combine for the past week. “The Oakland Raiders want Johnson but do not have the cap space the Niners do. I’m also told the Dallas Cowboys want to sign Johnson but, like the Raiders, their cap space is limited compared to San Francisco.”

The 49ers are slated to be among the top five NFL teams in terms of salary cap space, according to OverTheCap.com. Neither the Raiders nor the Cowboys are in the top 20 with Dallas being among the teams with the least amount of available money.

  7. unca_chuck says:

Would love to get Trumaine as it helps us immensely, and hurts the Rams all in the same move.

As for S Watkins, meh. There are plenty of WRs out there that aren’t as needy.

  8. rob says:

The San Francisco 49ers are expected to target Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Allen Robinson when he becomes a free agent on March 14, according to multiple sources including our own Al Sacco.
Vincent Frank of Sportsnaut is also hearing that the 49ers plan to make a strong push for Robinson. The Jaguars declined to use the franchise tag on Robinson, which would have cost the team nearly $16 million.

    • rob says:

More good news from 49ers webzone. i think WINDER was wanting Robinson if I’m not mistaken

  9. rob says:

There we go trying to fill needs in free agency so we can have flexibility come draft time ! It’s nice to have people running the show who know what they’re doing !

  10. rob says:

Pro bowler Sammy Watkins might hit free agency too they say !

  11. unca_chuck says:

I would totally dig on Robinson. Not Watkins. Shit, I’m still pissed we didn’t draft Cal Bear Keenan Allen

  12. rob says:

I mistakenly referred to Watkins as a pro bowl WR but why don’t you like him Chuck ?

These stats look pretty good . 16 ypc career avg over 4yrs.

  13. unca_chuck says:

He whines a lot. Well, he seems to have changed his attitude recent;y. I thought was was going to get tagged, but the Rams didn’t tag him or TJ. They tagged LaMarcus joyner. I just like Robinson more. A I said though, there are a shit-ton of options.

  14. unca_chuck says:

The Rams were pass-happy offense that Watkins didn’t do much in. Not sure why.

  15. Berger says:

I was the one person wanting Robinson in the draft with our first pick. I actually liked him the best and Kelvin Benjamin 2nd. I remember getting shot down on those two because their combine 40’s weren’t good enough. I would still take Robinson. He’s game fast, a great leaper and wins the 50/50 balls.

  16. rob says:

My top choices that year were Jake Mathews , Odell Beckam jr , Aaron Donald ,Jimmy Garrapolo,Devonta freeman, Andrew norwell and Malcolm Buttler

  17. rob says:

Thinking back I can remember Aaron Donald’s was out there . Thought he’d be a beast but we’d never even have a shot at him. My next choice was Darqueze Dennard a DB I thought we might have a shot at and was kinda pissed when Cleveland snatched him … until I saw Jimmie Ward ! Teddy Bridgewater was a good looking QB i remember too !

  18. rob says:

Liked Carlos Hyde from what i saw and my other gu that year was Louis Nix ! jimmy garapollo and Allen Robinson went just before Chris Borland and Marcus Martin ! Martin looked pretty good to me !

    • Berger says:

Louis Nix was great in 2011. Would have been a 1st rd pick. In 2012 he had knee problems and dropped to the 3rd rd.

Nobody noticed my 8:28 post ? I googled that draft and picked out all of the biggest names that came out of that draft. I didn’t even know who half of those people were at the time LOL.

  21. rob says:

Low cost free agent anyone . Low risk big reward maybe !
Guy put up nice NT numbers in 2016
