Draft Implications Be Damned!

Run the table! With this improbable and fairly unlikely event that we have found our guy (thanks, New England), the 49ers have the chance to run the table under Jimmy Garoppolo and his cast of also-rans. No mean feat when you see that the original squad to start the year had more talent on both sides of the ball, and mustered a 1-10 record.

So, to hell with the draft spot and take no prisoners! A 5-0 run to close the season would be a nice feather in the cap of this new front office and brain trust. Especially seeing as 3 of the 5 are potential playoff teams.

  1. Nipper says:

Beat RAMS lite………the Rams want the day off so send them off in a proper manner.

  2. Winder says:

Have a nice time in Maui Chuck, it’s a good time to go.
It’s funny but I don’t want this season to end. A lot different from the last few.It is obvious that we have something going and from what I can see and feel we are gonna be pretty special next year. We may not be there all the way but I think we will be close.

    • Lurker John says:

I feel the same way. I’m already pumped for next season, but the off=season should be pretty entertaining too. Looking forward to seeing the moves that are made, then the draft.

  3. Lurker John says:

Agree 100%. The draft is the draft and I believe we’ll do well there regardless of the final record. So win the bloody game! Beat the Lambs!

  4. Lurker John says:

I assume you mean better on both sides of the ball due to injuries.

  5. 12th Man says:

Draft? What draft? Beat the shit out the Rams is what I’m talking about, and I will be keeping a weather eye on the Falcons to win or the Squawks to lose, either way the Squawks are eliminated.

    Too much to hope for?

  6. 12th Man says:

    This is on NFL.com:
“Rapoport reported Oakland intends to offer Gruden an annual salary of over $10 million and an ownership stake in the team.”

Mark Davis can’t be this stupid, can he?

  7. 12th Man says:

    Likely coaching changes:
Bears, Giants (they have an interim Spagnuolo), Colts, Browns, Bengals, Lions and Titans.

    On the bubble coaching changes:
    Texans, Cardinals, (retirement?).

    We will see soon enough.

  8. zumiee says:

I think Jerry Jones is going to dump Garrett.

    • zumiee says:

This was an exquisitely disappointing season for the Cowboys and their fans. They really thought they were going places this season.
Garrett can’t be blamed for the Elliot situation, but I think Jones is going to want to make a change.

      • 12th Man says:

Well he did get the kiss of death “vote of confidence” last week from Jerruh, but I don’t think Garrett gets canned.

  9. Lurker John says:

Final game of 2017! Beat the Lambs!

  10. 12th Man says:

Sunday ticket not allowing the game, NFL rules for LA market, so Im watching on my phone with verizon and its literally 2.30 sec behind sundae ticket, saw th redbone action and FG.
    better than nothing i suppose.

    • Lurker John says:

      Stupid rules.

      • 12th Man says:

very annoying, pay for the service and its hit and miss

      • Lurker John says:

12th, I found this site at the start of the year and have been able to watch every 49er game for the first time since I was a kid. It was a little wonky at the start of the year, prone to dropouts and stoppages, but for the most part it’s been good. $30/year and you can watch every NFL game with NO stupid blackout rules:

        https://www.247tvstream.com/

      • Lurker John says:

Performance is likely dependent on your wifi connection, as with anything else. Mine’s decent but nothing to write home about.

  11. Lurker John says:

Tyler Lockett 99 yard kickoff return for a TD. That dude has to be one of the fastest men in the league. I’d love to see Victor Bolden start to develop into that kind of returner.

  12. Lurker John says:

    Touchdown!

  13. Lurker John says:

We need to get Goodwin his 1,000 yards!

  14. 12th Man says:

    i just saw the TD

  15. 12th Man says:

tough to join in here today

  16. Lurker John says:

Not sure what he was looking at there. Terrible throw.

  17. Lurker John says:

Off season priority: clean up the penalties.

  18. Lurker John says:

12th, see my reply above if you haven’t already.

  19. 12th Man says:

good D stand and great play by Colbert. that kid is playing big.

  20. Lurker John says:

Robbie Gold. 39/41 is pretty damn impressive.

  21. Lurker John says:

First winning season for the Rams in 14 years. I had no idea it was that long.

  22. 12th Man says:

Every time they go on O I almost expect them to score. Last time I felt like that was 94 with Steve Young. No disrespect to Garcia, but that season with Young it just felt like every drive would end in points. Feels like that again to me, crazy I know.

  23. Lurker John says:

Kittle with 100 yards receiving before the half. I keep repeating myself, but I think the kid’s going to be a star. As long as he keeps improving as a blocker.

  24. Irish Kevin says:

Helmet to helmet, defensive dude was an idiot!!

  25. Irish Kevin says:

Standing up, hopefully that is a good sign.

  26. 12th Man says:

I saw the hit on redbone, any update on quise?

  27. Irish Kevin says:

Is that defensive guy a starter? If he is he should get a one game suspension

  28. Lurker John says:

I don’t care what that announcer says, that was a dirty hit.

  29. Lurker John says:

They just got him on the cart. He looks really out of it, but he waved to the crowd.

  30. Irish Kevin says:

Goodwin gave the Number 1 sign , and then 2 thumbs up as he was being taken into the tunnel

  31. Lurker John says:

    Touchdown! For Quise!

  32. 12th Man says:

    looks bad for quise

  33. Lurker John says:

It looked like they were escorting Countess off the field, but I didn’t see the ref kick him out.

  34. 12th Man says:

I would really have preferred to see the Rams full squad today, Niners 20-3 but with an asterisk.

  35. 12th Man says:

    Turn over

  36. Lurker John says:

Garoppolo showing some cracks today. Two terrible throws on the pick. How the hell is that a catch?

    • 12th Man says:

Bourne fell down to be fair and the first one Murphy slipped and wasn’t in the spot Garoppolo expected.

  37. Lurker John says:

If that’s a catch the whole rule needs to be redone. The Niners were screwed multiple times this year on plays just like that.

  38. 12th Man says:

no way that was a catch

  39. 12th Man says:

This guy in NY is an asshole, screws up game after game with his reviews. It was better when the refs got to review their own calls on the sidelines, at least they are experienced in the pro game, this suit is making a mess of the process.

    • Lurker John says:

That review was inexplicable. That’s an incompletion by the current rules, period. What more evidence do you need than the ball laying on the ground? He didn’t “complete the process” in any way shape or form.

  40. Lurker John says:

Even with Witherspoon’s potential, the Niners cornerback corps is in serious need of an upgrade. He was badly beaten on that last pass and gave up the one play he couldn’t allow in that situation. He’s been beat on other plays in this game. DJ continues to look like a Division II player, including in this game. The have to play him 8 yards off the wideouts just so he doesn’t get beat deep. Anyone other than Mannion beats him like a drum.

It’s one of several positions that simply must be improved.

  41. Lurker John says:

Brock Coyle has played very well. He’s with the team next year in some capacity. Nifty return by Taylor. Love that kid.

  42. Lurker John says:

I thought he sailed the second throw, 12th. Not busting him out, he’s also made some great plays and had two drops by my count. We (I) just have to keep in mind that it’s still only his 7th career start.

    • 12th Man says:

Could be John but with his receiver on the ground I can’t tell. Amazing how much courage he has to throw into those tight windows in as you say, his 7th start.

  43. Lurker John says:

Gotta catch a perfect pass George!

  44. Lurker John says:

Sorry to hear about Goodwin’s concussion. That’s a terrible injury caused by one idiot’s dirty play. Totally unnecessary.

    • 12th Man says:

I was surprised he wasn’t tossed for it. Too bad, Quise might have got his yards for his 1,000 today.

  45. Lurker John says:

The dropsies have returned for this game.

  46. Lurker John says:

Sheldon May looks like a guy who could contribute moving forward, if only to add depth to the D-line.

  47. alleykat69 says:

How did Mannion ever have the most career yards in Pac 12 history?
This guys another Blaine Gabbert at best, probably worse..

  48. Lurker John says:

This color guy stinks. He just got done praising DJ for the number of tackles he’s made. Someone should remind him that a high number of tackles is usually a bad thing for a CB.

  49. Lurker John says:

Say what you will about Hyde, that’s his 8th TD of the year. Not too shabby.

  50. Lurker John says:

Breida and Hyde both having nice games, as is the Niner running attack overall.

  51. 12th Man says:

Its official, Niners O is the real thing.

  52. alleykat69 says:

Can’t see a scenario where Hyde doesn’t comeback.
He’s proved his worth this year, staying healthy, running hard, pass blocking well, catching out of the backfield.
Brieda helps make this a good tandem, along with Jusy the FB making key blocks to spring them both. Also if Joe Williams can hold on to the ball, he could possibly be in the mix next year as well..

  53. alleykat69 says:

Ruben Foster on the ground again. As much as I’m sure most of us love his energy and fire. will he ever hold up for a full season?

  54. alleykat69 says:

Yeah Winder you might be right about Hyde and his salary.Would the same apply to Eric Reid?Wouldnt think they would want to lose some of these veterans presence going forward in their rebuilding, but who knows?

  55. Lurker John says:

Seattle comes all the way back to take the lead over Arizona. They have to win and Atlanta has to lose, but they have a 2-score lead with about 6 minutes left.

  56. Lurker John says:

    Good win!

  57. Lurker John says:

Not looking good for Seattle. 2 TD lead for ATL. I love it.

  58. 12th Man says:

I like what Garoppolo said when asked about not facing the full Rams squad. “Its a faceless opponent”, meaning it makes no difference who is on the field, your job is to win.

    • Lurker John says:

I’m already ready for next season. Hopefully the Giants will rebound and make the off season go by more quickly.

  59. 12th Man says:

Cards have a FG. This will come down to the wire but in any event I thin its safe to say the Klink has become the Klunk, home field advantage not what it used to be there.

    • Lurker John says:

The team either. I can hear that window closing. Sherman and Chancellor likely gone. This’ll shut up the loudmouthed Seattle fans for a while.

  60. 12th Man says:

Falcons have won so the Squawks are out and the Niners are 5 in a row and 6 out of last 7, and all is right with the world! Happy New Year guys!

  61. Winder says:

    Happy New Year everyone

  62. Lurker John says:

Blair Walsh misses a 48 yarder to end if for Seattle. ROFL!!

  63. 12th Man says:

    Bonus, The Squawks lost too!!!!

  64. alleykat69 says:

    Hawks Out!!
Sleepless in Seattle tonight ok that was corny!
Happy New Years everyone! Nothing finer then being a niner!
Next year watch out, the west comes down to the lambs&49ers as the Seasquacks&Arizona fade away with old rosters and coaches..
Breaking news..Jack DeRio fired in Oakland
    Chucky coming back???

  65. alleykat69 says:

Ravens about to choke their playoff spot to Buffalo lol

  66. 12th Man says:

One more nugget, the Niners beat 3 playoff teams in a row, Titans, Jags and Rams. Say what you will but they may be the best 6-10 team ever, and what happened the last time the Niners went from 2 wins to 6 wins to…..

  67. Nipper says:

Damn……….6-10 never felt so good! What a memorable season. As for the draft get a pass rusher and another corner. Build up the O line and a top WR would be nice. As for you guys…… guzzle down some spirits before you hit the hay. Happy New Year!

  68. 12th Man says:

Oh, about that draft. It will be a coin flip between the Raiduhs and the Niners for 9-10 spots. Hands up all who saw that happening at the start of the season.

  69. unca_chuck says:

Wow, to think the Niners and Raiders have the same record at the end of the year. Coulda made a shit ton of money betting on that outcome. What happened to Foster?

    • Lurker John says:

I didn’t get specifics, but he went down in the second half. He stayed down for a bit then walked off under his own power. He didn’t return.

  70. Lurker John says:

The Raiders didn’t waste and time canning Del Rio.

  71. Lurker John says:

Shanahan said in his presser that Rueben had another stinger. Could’ve gone back in but they had a big lead so they held him out. Sounds like he aggravated the same issue he’s dealt with the past few weeks. Buckner had a bruised chest in the first half, came out, went back in, aggravated it then was held out for the rest of the game. KS also said that Goodwin will be fine and fly home with the team. Said it wasn’t has scary as it first looked. JG called it a dirty play, which it was.

All in all, nothing too serious.

  72. Nipper says:

A tale of Two Cities……….both football teams had 6-10 records. One team fires their coach for a terrible season and not only fires him but makes him announce it to the media himself! In the other city hope is high for better days ahead. The HC is lauded as well as the team for a job well done!

  73. 12th Man says:

Cardinals need a new coach, Arrians (sp?) retired.

  74. 12th Man says:

Turns out the Rams safety that hit Quise was ejected, I didn’t hear that on the broadcast but that was the right thing to do.

    • Nipper says:

I guess Gruden is there to sell tickets. Del Rio is just plain boring. The fans could give a hoot about Del Rio and so did Davis. Del Rio had to announce his own firing?

  75. Lurker John says:

I didn’t hear it announced either, 12th, but he was clearly being escorted off the field. Not sure why it wasn’t mentioned.

    • ewisco says:

the guy was also clearly woozy so i thought they took him out for his own concussion. the officials never said a thing that i heard. vicious, stupid hit.

      • 12th Man says:

That’s what I thought too but read today he was ejected. The announcing team was pretty lousy.

  76. Lurker John says:

Baker Mayfield looking like the real deal in the Rose Bowl.

  77. alleykat69 says:

In the end Georgia’s 1st year QB(Jake Fromm)was eveybit as good in a pressure game !Hats off to Georgia in a epic 2OT game to knock off the Sooners 54-48!!
Got the critical block FG too in that 2nd OT to setup the W..

  78. 12th Man says:

I thought this was funny. Navarro Bowman went a combined 4-11 playing for the Niners and Raiders. I guess the grass isn’t always greener on the other side.

  79. unca_chuck says:

Hah! I would hope better for bowman but hey in the Walsh philosophy better a year early than a year late.

    • 12th Man says:

I might be off but reading between the lines Bowman’s ego got in the way. When the Niners played the Panthers, Bowman talked about being disrespected and said he would be the best LB on the field that day not Luke Kuechly, who has far more press than Bowman. Didn’t turn out that way.
To be fair to Bowman, I think he was underrated nationally, but he never came to grips with his injuries making a difference, and his ego ultimately caused more harm as he got a reduced role on the team.
I like the guy, he was an absolute stud, but you have to evaluate yourself year by year and I don’t think he did that in an honest way.

Of course I might be full of shit.

  80. 12th Man says:

Bowman played well for the Raiders:
** Linebacker NaVorro Bowman played all 70 snaps for the Raiders’ defense. Bowman joined the Raiders after being released by the 49ers wanting to show he could still be an every-down player even with two major injuries in his past. He ended up playing 98 percent of snaps after his arrival (643 of 656) and led the team in tackles in nine of his 10 games.

  81. zumiee says:

Sorry to interrupt the football talk. I have a question regarding the Flap baseball blog. Those of you that go on that blog, are you seeing a comment box on there today? I can’t see one, and it seems no one has commented today. Anyone experiencing the same malfunction on the Flap today?

    • zumiee says:

If others are experiencing the same thing, could somebody send Craig an email about it? I’m away from home today, and only have my phone with me, and my email is difficult for me on my phone.

    • alleykat69 says:

Zumie I can’t post either, yeah no comment section.

  82. Winder says:

zumiee- I went to the flap and at the very bottom of the last thread it says ‘comments closed’. Don’t know why.

  83. unca_chuck says:

Ahh there’s an auto close comments feature on WordPress. I’m out of town as well but I’ll try to fix it later

  84. rob says:

    Vic fangio anyone

  85. rob says:

highest rated QB in the league ! Alex Smith at 104.7 1

    • Lurker John says:

Whythechange over at the SFGate comment sections likely has a boner for that little fact, 5 years later and he’s still bitching about the team trading AS, not to mention disparaging Jimmy Garoppolo. Serious man crush.

      • rob says:

SF gate was a fun blog while it lasted ! Garapollo is a true franchise QB and better than Smith ! The only problem is Smith had horrible coaching and the fans here underestimated him !

  86. Lurker John says:

Please read this, dudes. Fascinating in and of itself, with a strong interest for all 49ers fans, as it may well explain how and why we got Jimmy G. Who knew?

    http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/page/hotread180105/beginning-end-new-england-patriots-robert-kraft-tom-brady-bill-belichick-internal-power-struggle

  87. unca_chuck says:

Great article. For what it’s worth, the Patriot have maintained a level of success that surpassed the 49ers dominance of the 80s – 90s amid a shit-ton of turmoil and self-inflicted wounds. .

    Nw thread is up.
