Well, the Jimmy G story just got a little more cred as the 49ers beat a solid playoff contender in the Tennessee Tuxedos and our ex-WR-turned-TE Delanie Walker. Walker paid early dividends for us by dropping a TD and fumbling, the drop gave us 4 points on the FG, and the fumble led to our only TD of the day, But the story of the day was the passing attack.
Jimmy G was 31-43 for 381 yards and a score. He didn’t take as many shots as last week, but did get sacked 3 times. He threw passes to 10 different receivers, including himself, and including 10 for 114 to Marquise Goodwin. The defense had a very mixed day but in the end did a good enough job to keep the score close. Close enough for the last FG drive with 1:20 left in the game.
Encouraging signs were the 7-14 3rd down conversions and the 414 total yards. Discouraging were the red zone struggles, the lack once again of a pass rush, the 7 penalties (better than recent games but some really killer ones), and the 6-12 3rd down conversion rate given up.
In the end though, a solid win against a playoff team.
Bring on the Jags……..Niners probably will lose that one but who knows? Jimmy G. may work some magic. Can always hope now.
Watching 49er post game on Bay Area Sports net, all three and especial Jeff Garcia say the Niners need to get away from the run 1st mentality in the red zone, I have been preaching that for years! More than likely it will not happen this year, but I expect big changes on offense once JG masters the play book. I still don’t understand why they give it Hyde, the opponent loads the block and Hyde is just not big enough to punch it through. I don’t even know who the full back is, but he has got to be bigger than Hyde.
We need to keep the defenses honest with the threat of a run. As of now I doubt we put much of a scare into anyone with our run game. Once again our biggest glaring need is OL. I don’t think Hyde will be back next year but he sure has been doing better in a KS game plan. I know he ran for minus years at least 4 times and no yards at least once. Brieda wasn’t much better. Much of that can be put on our OL. Except for Staley they are pretty bad. I don’t know where our draft position is at the moment but if we keep moving back maybe we should take an Olineman with the first pick.
That is what NJ and I have been saying. We both want the #1 rated O-lineman in the draft, OG Nelson from Northern Women. Any dunce can see we can’t run inside.
That is fine, but other teams have a big bruising back that can power through the defense, Hyde is not that guy, it showed in him constantly trying to go outside, 9 times out of 10 he does not make it. Put a Tom Rathman in there on the goal line. Anybody but Hyde
You are zeroing in on one play. I am talking about the entire season. I agree the hand-off should have gone to Juice but would have probably still been stuffed with our guards.
The Titans were run blitzing all game long. Hyde ran right into a linebacker standing in the backfield. I don’t see why that’s so hard to understand. All year Niner backs have had to deal with shitty-to-no running lanes. Pretty hard to have a good running game with that bad of an OL.
Derek Carr with a huge fuck-up to cost Oakland a shot at the win. What an idiot.
Great summation, Chuck. This team is moving in the right direction and that gives us all hope heading into next season. It should be fun to see what moves the Niners make in the off season and in the draft. They dealt a pretty good Titans team a playoff blow today and they did it in dramatic fashion.
Well that was a great game to go to. Not quite a playoff game atmosphere but Levi got loud, by far the best I’ve heard there. Turn out was decent but not full.
Jimmy G needs to ink a deal. Hard to say what happens once defenses have enough film on him but he is really accurate, gets the ball out quick and makes savvy plays. He hit 8 different receivers and is making stars of them.
O line run blocking is terrible and pass pro not good either but JG manages it well.
They beat a team that was paying with passion, the Titan sideline was excited and I have no doubt they thought they would win this game. Makes what the Niners did all the more impressive.
Very cool, 12th. It looked like a good crowd. The act that Garoppolo makes everyone around him better is a sign that he’s doing something right. I mean shit we threw slants! Beathard may get there, but he did not have a clue how to read and throw one.
Signing Jimmy G will be a priority I’m sure. As far as the red zone goes, we’ll be in better shape next year with a better line and this seasoning.
IMO, as well as stopping the stupid penalties, they really need better run blocking to improve their redzone efficiency Chuck. The defenses know the Niners are not a balanced team so the threat of running it in is small. Makes it tough down there.
Garoppolo throws into very tight windows, amazing to see, you kind of hold your breath sometimes and wait to see who comes out with it. The guys got moxie and now they have to defend the whole field. Did you see that sidearm pass? Crazy stuff.
He makes a lot of throws flat-footed but he can arm them fast enough to get there. It’s a bit scary when he throws like that, but they get there for the most part.
The only one that was a duck was the ball that Goodwin took from the safety when Garoppolo got hit when he threw it. Crazy play. He looks a little like A Rodgers out there.
12th JG actually hit 10 different receivers, including himself.
The legend of Jimmy G grows. That batted down pass to himself, great reflexes.
So far I haven’t seen a weakness but with enough film those craft DC’s around the league will find something to exploit.
LoCo Jr made the point that on a run play JG keeps his head down and concentrates on the snap, on a pass play he surveys the field. I didnt notice that but if true the D knows when a run is coming.
Sounds like a pitcher tipping his pitches. I’ll have to keep an eye out for that.
Thanks for that game day summary, 12th! Sounds like a fun day at the yard and the weather had to be near perfect. Obviously the heat isn’t an issue during the late fall and winter months.
The crowd sounded loud on TV as well. That side armed toss to Taylor was pretty amazing and should’ve been a TD, even though Taylor fumbled it into the end zone. Ticky-tack call on Goodwin. I thought that was KS’s best play call of the day. Totally caught the Titans defense flat-footed.
Film study will probably give DC’s something to throw at JG, but the way he’s making throws now, with guys almost always in his face and with little-to-no running game is very encouraging. Once a proper line is put into place, he figures to really take off, as does the whole offense. That process will be fun to watch.
If we can trade down and get a guard, I’m all for it. Thing is, as we move down, Barkley is out (and I think we should stick with Hyde anyway), we have a shot at Chubb. As good as a guard may be, guards are much easier to find than dominant pass rushers. If Chubb is there, they’d be nuts not to take him. Plus, just think of the jokes . . .
“Look at the size of that Chubb!”
“Chubb really penetrated the line to drill Wentz!”
That Chubb really pounded the tackle on that play.”
Chubb looks like a stud, but do the Niners really draft yet another d-lineman? And I thought he was a tackle, a good pass-rushing tackle.
If we stay at #5 there is still a chance Barkley will be there. Probably slim though. I think Chubb will go before Barkley
It really depends on where Rosen and Darnold go. I think they can trade up for Barkley if he is really that high on their wish list. Chubb is a DE.
Hey 12th are those tix still available for the Jags game? I thought the Jags game was later.
If you get there Chuck, keep a game program in mind for me.
Do they sell those red Bud Light aluminum 9er branded SF logo bottles there?
If so, I’ll cover the costs involved, if you can snag one of them for my Man Cave as well.
Much appreciated if you can pull it off 😀
You can drink the beer of course. Keep the bottle and cap intact if it’s sold there.
It’s regionally marketed stuff. I can only locate the NY Teams out here when they’re first distributed.
Anheuser Busch wouldn’t even sell me a SF case due to distribution agreements.
I tried…..
They had the red bottles there on Sunday. My friend is going next Sunday so I will ask him to get one for you if they still have them NJ.
They don’t give you the caps, they remove them before letting you drink but will see if he can snag a top.
The tix were for the Rams game in LA Chuck but I did find someone who wants them.
Curious to see if Shanny has any inclination to have Joshua Garnett audition for the Center position next year?
He’s been asked to ‘transform’ his physique for some reason.
Thinking, maybe, that would mean slimming down closer to 300 for the ZBS, would be their intent?
Kilgore has no competition on the roster at this point, according to the depth chart they publish.
Something to watch for next Summer I guess. That, and the activity in April, specific to who they Draft.
Tomlinson might be a candidate as well?
One thing is certain IMO. Interior OL options typically aren’t hard to find in the mid to late RDs.
OTs on the other hand, are more the premium priced 1st RD pieces, along with DEs and DBs.
Shopping in the top 10 would afford them some flexibility on where to place their priorities at least.
Those damn Cleveland Browns are poised to inherit the Titans’ #1 Pick as well as their own #1.
Bastards could conceivably have 2 Picks in the top 5 depending the final results.
With all the talent they’ve selected in the past several years they still can’t figure out how to win.
What a clusterfuk….
Kilgore needs to go away or be the backup at best. He’d be a good depth guy, but the position is way too important for his mediocre skills. He’s been awful. Garnett may be losing weight because he’s fat. Seems difficult to imagine a guard suddenly transforming into a topflight center, which is what the team needs.
Goodwin has done a great job of getting open quickly, and Garoppolo is finding him. Be nice to have Garcon and a true #1 next year. Taylor is OK I’d rather have another burner.
The problem with the Browns is they have drafted about 20 shitty QBs in the past 20 drafts. Weiden? Quinn? Couch? McCoy, McCown? Manziel? Terrible decisions by that front office.
It all starts at the top. That is why the Niners are starting to look promising. Keeping Jed on the sidelines with his mouth shut. Right now our future is so promising that I can hardly believe it. It truly looks like we are getting it right this time. I am really excited about this upcoming off-season, can’t wait to see what we do.
Jed hired harbaugh and Shanahan and is still at the top ! Big things coming up Winder !!!
he also hired Baalky
Staley , Garnett , Kilgore and Brown are in ! We should trade down and go WR and CB next ! Free agency … G and TE ! Jimmy Graham maybe ?
NO to Jimmy Graham. He doesn’t block and he has a shitty attitude. Screw him. Continue to develop Kittle. I don’t seem Graham as a Shanahan guy anyway.
I think Bourne is gonna turn out to be a keeper and he has pretty good size. I think we should take a shot at a RB and then OL. Hoping that FA’s want to come here Should be able to shore up some spots that way.
Yeah when it comes to the draft just don’t be the Browns. That is one inept outfit. When the FO is full of stupid fools the result is clear.
It’s interesting that both of last years can’t miss WR’s had non productive seasons. I know that Williams was out for most of the year with injuries and the same can be said of Davis. But when they have played they have’n’t shown much. I think the reason a lot of clubs are reluctant to draft WR’s so high is that even thought the players are obviously good it doesn’t mean they will work out in theirs systems. On the other hand I think JG and KS’s system would make most any receiver look pretty good.
Just looking at what has happened here is a pretty good indicator of a system helping players. Also a top-flight QB.
Good point, 3rd string nobodies going over 100 yds, repeatedly, says something for sure.
12th, thanks for the offer on the Bud Light bottle – We can certainly work out the details if your Buddy can score.
My Man Cave is a never ending museum of 9er memorabilia and, adding a bottle, game program etc, would be awesome 😀
Much appreciate your efforts my Friend.
Thank you.
Niners have scored on 13 of the last 16 drives. I know that’s mostly FG’s, but still….Lets let that sink in a little…
It sure beats punting on 13 of their last 16 drives.
The good news is this is a young team that should only get better. We have a last place schedule next year as well, so if there is a good deal of improvement the team is easily in the playoff hunt.
Looks like our former fleeting star from Down Under did more than just go down 😀

Nothing like being sued by Ms ‘V’ for taking liberties with her Vee Jay Jay huh?
Christ… The excitement NEVER ends in 9er Land.
Giants finally find a 3rd baseman. Panda can go sit on the bench. And goodbye to the CF. Have a good time in Tampa.
New thread is up . . .
