Well, here we are at yet another crossroad, with Seattle in the headlights. The team, in my estimation, has done everything wrong, what with the latest news that Colin Kaepernick is on the shelf for the rest of the season, and likely his career, with the 49ers. So, here we sit, with our QB, Blaine Gabbert, the guy recently voted the worrst backup in the NFL, as our standard-bearer. Our backup QB is the one and only Dylan Thomas, who epically wrote, “Do no go gentle into that good night. Rage, rage against the dying of the light.” Certainly this proves that he’s a follower of the 49ers.
Oh, Dylan Thompson? Ahhh. He’s our backup QB. Undrafted, cut, and PSed, he famously said, “What’s a Gamecock?” So, this latest tossing of our budding superstar gone awry to the scrap heap comes with the usual amount of WTF? because, as of yesterday morning, CK was listed as probable, and no one was very concerned about his non-throwing-shoulder injury. Reports are he wanted the surgery, but no one has outright said that. There is the school of thought that they want out of the contract and will cut him before the $11.6 mill 2016 salary (and injury ins) kicks in, so they said, you’re finished this year.
So, once again the focus of the 49ers falls upon the shadowy machinations of a front office that seems to breed discontent and whispered innuendo as a staple of their existence. From Nolan/Sing forward, there always seems to be a lot of backroom whispering among the brass about how to deal with problems. None of which are straightforward and transparent. Singletary talked of rats on the ship, and Harbaugh certainly dealt with his giant obfuscation pie dealing with Baalke and York. Problem is, he had his own spin machine set to overdrive, and the mutually agreed-upon napalming of their coexistence went up in a cataclysmic and virtually guaranteed fireball.
Now we have this. Our once-and-future quarterback, hand-picked by Jim Harbaugh himself, a superstar in the making who is now seemingly lost and befuddled by an offense that was, in their words, dumbed down so he could run it effectively. Sure, that sounds good on paper, and the results these last 2 seasons bear this out, but the problems with the team are much more than just Kappy’s doing. The player turnover was not his doing, nor the last few dogshit drafts, especially on offense, of our teflon GM, Trent Baalke.
This team bears no resemblance to the Scotty-built team that underachieved so greatly under Singletary, but was loaded with high draft choice talent. I don’t know if Baalke resents Haraugh so much that he wants to distance himself from everything St. Jim, or if he really feels that the way to go is Blaine Gabbert. Makes NO sense if this was their decided course of action, because they should have drafted a backup to Kaepernick at least this year, if not 2014. So, again, this front office has the perception of being a bunch of clueless idiots that can’t see further than their collective noses. Can’t say I disagree. Kappy may not realize his full potential, but he certainly is better off somewhere else.
The 49ers? Well, we are in fine fettle with our backup QB raging against the dying light.

Miserable defensive effort. It seemed like Jimmie Ward was beat on every play, run or pass. Doug Baldwin isn’t fast but he blew past Ward multiple times. This guy’s a first round pick?

I’ve never seen such fundamentally poor football on defense. Graham was wide open way too many times. The tacking was awful. They could have stopped at least a couple TD drives with better tackles. That being said, they had their chances but got Alexish in the red zone.
Gabbert got moral victory #1. Be still my heart.
Funny how certain people were jumping up and down with joy over Gabbert’s great win last week. Atlanta has now lost 4 straight. Their offense scored 14 and gave up 7 in their home loss to Indy and SSI recipient Matt Hasselbeck today.
It’s still Kappy’s fault and he’s not even on the team anymore. LOL
This just made the rest of the next 5 years a little less stressful. If Jed sticks with Baalke, it doesn’t look good for quite a while.

I’ve now got the Niners at #6 draft position. If you take the SOS today, our schedule hasn’t been as tough as Detroit’s, believe it or not. If we count in opponents yet to be played, we lose to Detroit but beat Dallas (who will win a bunch anyway now that Romo’s back).
That Niner-Lion game could prove to be a monster. LOL

This was a perfect game for the rest of the season. Not a total blowout. Some competitiveness. See who can play and who can’t. And lose, somewhat respectably, to keep the draft position high. Dubs purposefully tanked the season they needed to keep that #8 conditional pick that would have gone to Utah, had they won one more game. That pick turned into Harrison Barnes, and he’s been a real impact player helping the Dubs to the champeeeenship. Not to say Baalke will pick the next Montana with the #5 instead of the #6, but every bit helps. Canning Baalke and the entire front office and coaching staff would actually be the best start for the offseason…
The Dubs got Barnes, Draymond Green and Festus Ezili in that 2012 draft.
Not too shabby. Shows what one good daft can do for a team.

Better still, according to MM Kappy went to the FO about his shoulder injury AFTER WEEK 4! I guess, according to a commenter who appears in the know, a torn labrum develops/worsens over time. But still how nice of the Niners’ FO to be piling onto a guy who is already on IR and who informed them of the injury after a game which put the Niners at 1-3 – against opponents who are ALL playoff bound and among the best in the league, including the 8-2 Cards, 7-3 Pack and Vikes, and the 6-4 Steelers who had Worthless at the time.
So the “Kappy left 20 TDs on the field” remark by the announcers came from an unnamed source in the FO. How convenient – like not telling anybody that Kappy went to the FO about his bad shoulder after Game 4. More FO bad-mouthing about a guy WHO WAS ALREADY ON IR!

I’m cool with the competitive loss thing, but sheezus, what’s the deal with kicking FGs when you’re 3-6 for the season and have a 4th and 3 or whatever in the Red Zone. If you don’t make the first down or the TD, does it really make much difference? Just go for it, for Kreissakes…

The punting in the 4th quarter thing really irks me. It’s exactly what someone above said, the coaches are not playing to win they’re just trying not to embarrass themselves, which they did anyway. There’s no excuse for the way the team came out yesterday, completely unprepared and devoid of any energy. Coming off a bye week that’s just inexcusable. The coaching staff, save for Rathman, should be canned for that alone.
And Tomsula’s slack-jawed distant gaze sideline demeanor is really starting to grate on me as well. At least give the appearance that you know what you’re doing. Talk to a coach, jump up and down, something. This dude is out of his depth.
He’s fall guy #2 behind Colin Kaepernick. Baalke is doing all he can to get rid of anyone that Harbaugh drafted or liked. To the detriment of the team.
I’m not very encouraged with things as they stand. My worst case scenario is they will stick with Tomsula and Gabbert based on some misguided theory that they are improving. Baalke stays and drafts a backup QB in the 4th round while pissing away our high draft picks on tiny WRs.
