Far be it from NFL players to be removed from the social media circus these days. In fact it appears to be a cottage industry. Whether it’s TMZ staking out LAX to break the Aldon Smith bomb hoax story, or some dude taking pics of Johnny Foot (Eight) ball rolling up a $20 in a Vegas bathroom (what happens in a Vegas bathroom apparently doesn’t stay in the Vegas bathroom) getting ready to partake in some recreational drug usage, or Ray Rice cold-cocking his soon-to-be wife and caught by the hotel security cameras, no one is safe at any time any where.
Throw in the fact that players still get in trouble the old fashioned way (failed drug test, DUI), Cleveland Browns WR Josh Gordon, he of the recent fame of being involved in the Jim Harbaugh trade, pulled a triple-triple by recently failing a drug test for pot, getting arrested for speeding and possession of marijuana, and then getting a DUI last weekend. Teammate Davone Bess was recently arrested for beating up a cop at the Ft Lauderdale airport, Viking Erin Henderson pulled a double-double of his own getting arrested on separate DUI and drug possession charges, AJ Jefferson (not Jenkins), Henry Melton, and Thomas Keiser were all arrested on domestic abuse, public intoxication, and assault charges.
Point being, I didn’t hear about a lot of these. I had to look these up. We’ve gotten to the point that getting busted as a player is getting pretty passé, unless it’s either a name player like Colin Kaepernick, or it’s a big crime, a la Aaron Hernandez. As we all know, our own team has suffered the slings and arrows of getting bad press for a bunch of players in the spotlight for various misdeeds. Throw in the high-and-mighty comments of head coach Jim Harbaugh and you have a side of shit to go along with the already beefy shit sandwich Coach has to eat.
As is obviously apparent, major fines and suspensions have done little to curtail these screw-ups. Shit, even with all the steroid busts in baseball, no one really gives a shit, provided you come up with a conciliatory mea culpa. No matter how trite or contrived. So, what next? For all intents and purposes, all these busts make Aldon’s situation look pretty mild in comparison. Or at least on par. I still think it’s only a 2 game suspension despite all the hooraw in blogland.
Chris Culliver’s case looks to be hitting the courtroom soon, so we all get to see how THAT turns out. For me, this one is a bigger deal. He faces five charges in all: felony hit and run, felony reckless driving with injury, felony possession of brass knuckles, misdemeanor hit and run, and misdemeanor driving on a suspended license. But Goodie Goodell doesn’t really come down hard on domestic abuse/aggravated assault charges. Plenty of players have beaten up their girlfriends and gotten in bar fights with little or no repercussions. Not to mention having a shit-flier of a party. Hitting children on bikes and then threatening passers-by may not be seen as a good model for their players to follow. But really, these misdeeds are not slowing down, and no one seems to care.
What do you think? Should these misdeeds be treated as a necessary part of the game? Should Goodie Goodell suspend guys harder? Ban repeat offenders indefinitely? Turn a blind eye to it, as was done for so long? The fans have shown that they don’t care one whit. Most are of a mind that if you can play, you deserve a 2nd (or 3rd) chance. As long as you are a star player. If you are a special teamer? Sorry. Don’t pass Go, don’t collect $200.00. It’s the nature of sports in America.

I don’t look for the Gov to take care of me, or provide a handout of any kind.
What I do expect is, that those that get to take my tax dollars, look out for me when they make decisions that impact the Middle Class.
When Wall Street and big Insurance Companies can get away with what they did, without penalty, there needs to be more scrutiny placed on their practices.
Many of those companies accepted bailouts, screwed their employees out of jobs and retirement benefits and, got away with it.
And they’ll continue to scream for less government regulations, simply because they don’t want to answer to anyone.
I do expect government to regulate them, because it’s been proven that they won’t do it without oversight of some kind from a neutral interest like the Fed.
That’s what I expect from Government, that we are properly protected from business fraud and taken care of after we’ve paid into Social Security when we’re no longer able to work.
In exchange for tax breaks to some of these Corporations, there should be stiff guidelines enforced for anyone caught manipulating pensions or cooking the books at the expense of the employees.
Ask folks from Enron, for example, how they’re doing today, especially those of retirement age.
Guess the Fed picked up that tab too, in the form of unemployment benefits and Social Security.
Meanwhile, those at the top that got busted, and went to prison, hung onto their loot.
The employees they screwed should be entitled to damages, at the Ivory Tower Crowds’ expense.
I agree with all you just wrote. Those aren’t red or blue points. There are greedy business owners. You don’t have to work for them. If they break the law they should pay the price.
I’ve owned businesses and I never screwed an employee. I’m not foolish enough to think all business owners are like me.
Tax incentives are just government levers to make business and citizens do their bidding. Voters have the power to fix that.

I just go ballistic when employers receive those breaks and, continue to screw employees by limiting hours, diminishing benefits and/or, cooking the books in the name of profits.

I’ve had numerous friends that were literally screwed out of years of retirement savings or, lost their jobs on Wall St entirely, due to greed and mismanagement involved in the financial sector.
Government should be there to protect both sides in the workplace.

As far as gridlock, Obama took office and immediately declared half the population his enemy. And declared his intention to punish those enemies, aka conservatives that didn’t support him. Do you think that promotes bipartisan progress or gridlock? So re-electing him and complaining about gridlock is like falling in the hole you just dug and wondering how it got there.
You do things Barry’s way or it’s Bush’s fault, the Republicans’ fault or you’re just a racist that hates blacks. Quite the brilliant leader.
Also, you have to realize that to probably more than half the country abortion is murder. You may not see it that way but they do and it’s not a question of economics to them, it’s a core belief and they can’t condone it. You don’t have to agree but you should at least respect it’s an honest position of many. Belittling other people’s beliefs is not the way to win support for a compromise. I’m just a “clinger” myself.
Nothing better to do than make babies? And I should pay for them to raise as many as they can make? That’s a recipe for the downfall of any society. Why should I work and support myself and my family if I have to support yours, too, and anyone else too stupid or lazy to quit making more babies or figure out how to pay for them. If you take away the right for those to have the abortions, if they choose to do so, you invariably add to the problem of additional mouths to feed, by parents with little or no resources to do so.
Whether the Church is willing, or able, to provide for these children becomes the question.

I would propose that legislation be enacted in such a way as to give a woman the option of putting a child up for adoption or, having the pregnancy terminated, before making that mother/child eligible for Fed benefits.

Hmmmm. Based on my high-level scan, there are roughly 1 million abortions per year. 30+ years of abortions = over 30 million more mouths to feed avoided. Seeing as most abortions are for lower-income families, and they are the ones being denied assistance, where does it end? Why are some so concerned with the pre-born, and then they shit on them once they are born?
At what point do the zealots that are so against it stop denying assistance for the lives they are supposedly saving? The dichotomy of all the religious aspects of this is those who are more fortunate are supposed to help the less fortunate. All that is happening is the less fortunate lose more and more assistance and rights at the cost of the freeloader aspect that the right constantly pushes. They find one guy taking advantage of the system and trot him around like a prized pony. While big oil, big pharma, and big agro get huge subsidies.
Pinning this on the voters is ludicrous, NoFear. The choices are ALWAYS 2 guys that are part of the system. And if not, once they get in, they BECOME part of the system. They spend 75% of their days soliciting campaign money for their next election.
Gerrymandering has taken congressional and senate races out of the equation. That’s how you get a 9% approval rate, but a 94% re-election rate.

Health care reform to me meant going after the insurance companies and their intrusion into what shouldn’t be a for-profit system. Much like the prison system these days is now for-profit, and you have states shuttling prisoners around like cattle to maximize asses in cells.
As far as abortion goes, if you take away a person’s right to choose, you should then provide support once the child is born. You can’t have it both ways. This isn’t really a matter of who wants it more or majority rule. Is the government intruding on a woman’s right to choose less government? No. It’s about the biggest government intrusion that could possibly exist. All the hoops and barriers put in place by states is tantamount to keeping women away from the process. All this rigamarole to force women to have their babies and then say sorry, you don’t get any help now that the kid is born perpetuates the cycle of poverty in low-income areas.
I liken it to the death penalty. I think more Americans are against it, but it goes on. Funny that the people most against abortion are pro death penalty.
Can’t have it both ways? That’s a false choice. I don’t want it any way. It’s not my business. The government getting in the middle of it and making laws and mandating behavior and using tax money for it all gets me involved. I don’t want to have to take a position on every aspect of the private lives of Americans.
I have my beliefs and moral compass and you have yours. As long as you living yours doesn’t interfere with me living mine, and it doesn’t cost me anything, leave me out of it. Government intervention with intent to control everything drags me into it.
Why should Hobby Lobby or any other business be forced to provide health care to their employees? Let alone health care options that contradict their religious beliefs. Why not just pay employees that much more or make their house payment or buy their groceries? Why is it health care and why is it on employers to provide it at all?
The government doesn’t know what kind of groceries you want any more than it knows what your health care or insurance needs are. Why should they mandate employers to pay for either?

Shit, the Raydurrs may beat their 8-8 goal this year. They did some major retooling of their defense, The Chargers blew their wad last year. I think they sink back to obscurity amid turnovers. The rest of the division is too tough. Then again, who knows what happens to KC. They had a creampuff schedule and a solid defense. They got waylaid by injuries to close the season and in their playoff game. They should remain good, though. Reid keeps them relevant for the reg. season at least. Better than SD and the Raiders anyway. Denver? Shit, on paper all is good. But building an entire D backfield can be a dicey proposition. Ware is aging, and may not be near the force he was before his injury, but they do have Von Miller.
The Houstons and the Atlantas are two teams that completely fell off the table last year. Atlanta’s cratering was due to the loss of their wideouts. Houston? Not really sure. But Matt Shaub had a disaster of a season. One that got him banished to the hinterlands of the east bay mud flats and Prince Not-So-Valiant’s realm. The Raiders looked OK with Hue as their OC, and even HC as they went 8-8 both times. Under Dennis (I’m not George) Allen, and new GM Reggie McKenzie, they’ve struggled wildly while pulling themselves from the morass of Re-Undeal Al’s final spastic gyrations.
On paper it looks good, but as Philly showed a couple years ago, looking good on paper sometimes doesn’t translate to wins.
My sleeper? Miami. Why not? I thought last year would be Tannehill’s breakout season. I missed by one year.
