Playoffs Week 3 – Footpocalypse Now

Its finally game day. Seattle fans are icing their throats in preparation to scream their brains out. The talk is over, only the game remains. We’ve all given our reason why, but in the end, it happens on the field. Amazingly, since I’ve been a Niner fan, I remember every playoff run short of the 1957 loss to the Deetroit Lions. I sat in the Candlestick rain for 2 straight championship losses to Brett Favre and the Packers. Reveled in joy when we finally beat the Cowboys in 1994. And threw a lawn chair 400′ down a hillside when Roger Craig fumbled 3-peat away.Β And died a little when Joe Montana was driven away in an ambulance in the loss to the Giants. These games are usually intense and hard-fought. As of now we are 5-9 in NFC Championships.

Time for number 6…

When you rely on one guy to be your offense, with very lackluster games from everyone else, eventually he is going to have to try to do too much.

    And that’s your 2013 season.

Our O-line is not as good as their press clippings. VD is not a real traditional Tight End, and our WRs can catch but cannot run away from anyone. And Gore behind this line cannot generate consistent yards against a good defense. And that’s all she wrote.

Horrible play call at the end by Greg Roman. The 49ers were driving with throws over the middle and Kendal Hunter in the game getting the edge (finally Roman dumped Gore and went to Hunter). They had success with Kaep running. They had 33 seconds and all their timeouts. It’s just like the Super Bowl. You don’t throw a fade to win the Super Bowl. And you don’t throw it to Crabtree. Did they not learn from the Super Bowl? You’d think they’d have something else designed for the end zone knowing sooner or later they’d have to score with seconds left to win the game. Bill Walsh designed the catch with the first option to Freddy, then the second option to Dwight or a throw away. With Greg Roman, in big games, you get a fade. Horrid. Not a Greg Roman fan. And yes, Kaep turned the ball over three times in crunch time, but ultimately you’re judged on your last drive. And that last drive the 49ers had the Seahawks on their heals – until Greg called a fade in the back of the endzone…… again. Greg Roman sucks.

  9. Got a little greedy there at the end- long pass to Crab covered by Sherman. Kap to Crab is not money at end of big games. We had time, should have gotten closer and tried something shorter. The bad taste will linger on for the O…

  10. Spitblood's avatar Spitblood says:

Greg Roman must go. A fade? Again? I still can’t get over it. When Frank Gore goes, and it’s time, Greg Roman must go as well. Go Broncos.

How many game-changing bad calls can a team survive in the playoffs.

Oh and CK7 is a fucking idiot.

    • 12th man's avatar 12th man says:

The 49ers offense was almost completely limited to quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who accounted for all but 25 of their 308 yards.

      • NoFear49er's avatar NoFear49er says:

Serioulsy? He had a QB Rating of like 56 and accounted for most of the bad plays and playing, too. Not the least of which was the stake in the heart to end the game, which he thinks was a great play that he’d make again. … a fucking idiot.

      • 12th man's avatar 12th man says:

Yes seriously, the kid accounted for almost all the plays. As Grumpy said earlier, if the O is just 1 (Kap) player it makes it hard to win every play. You choose to look at 3 TO and miss everything else that kid did today and that is against the best D in football.

Gore got 14 on 11, you can talk about blocking etc and some of that is fair but so is the absolute lack of production from the RB himself.

Kap is learning no question but it’s bullshit to lay the loss on him. Even the fade to Crab, not my fav play, was a couple of inches from winning the game.

More than anything I feel terrible for Bowman. He might have saved the playoffs with the play against Atlanta and then the play that the dumb rule negated might have saved this one.. And to come out of it wth a serious injury just sucks. I just hope that he can overcome the injury.

    • NoFear49er's avatar NoFear49er says:

That was one of the worst calls and ridiculous that it can’t be reversed on review. I think the bad call on roughing the kicker hurt us worse though since the game seemed to turn on it.

    • Irish Kevin's avatar Irish Kevin says:

Yes to give his all and then to have something like that happen, very sad.

  15. Irish Kevin's avatar Irish Kevin says:

Well, Kaep is a 1 1/2 years into his NFL career, lots of learning still to be done. IMO ALL CALLS IN A Championship game should be reviewable. There is just too many bodies in a pile to see everything clearly. Time to wrap it it up, not much else to say. NEXT YEAR WILL BE EPIC WITH THESE TWO TEAMS.

  16. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Roman HAS to go. We had the game I the bag, and fucked it up. Some horrible calls, but Kappy played his part in fucking this up. 3 turnovers ain’t gonna help. Even with that, they got 3 points off them.

Again roman HAS to go. We have too many weapons to be this conservative on offense.

    • 12th man's avatar 12th man says:

Play calls for the WR are abysmal. Almost never see a WR running across the field catching in stride, they always have their backs to the endzone stopped dead when they catch and then have to make a move, consequently YAC is piss poor. The WR play designs have no flair. They are not designing to get them open, just to get them into a zone.

  17. Spitblood's avatar Spitblood says:

    NoFear,
You don’t blame the refs…. ever. That’s for losers. There’s nothing wrong with our D. The offense needs serious work. I’ve been saying it all along – Frank Gore is done and Kaep needs to learn to be a pocket passer, Greg Roman sucks and Trent Baalke should have drafted Alshon Jeffrey. I mean, NoFear, if you want to blame the refs and claim we’re snake bit, think of all the fumbles in this game the 49ers recovered. Bottom line is our O just isn’t good enough, and we knew it all along.

The offseason our team is going to have some turnover. And btw, did Andy Lee just fall off the face of the earth with his punts or is it just me? For me, the 49ers need to replace Andy Lee, Frank Gore, Carlos Rogers and add some receivers. I think Marcus Lattimore was a huge mistake to draft. He could set the team back.

That said, don’t blame the refs. It’s poor form. The Bowman fumble recovery didn’t hurt us because they fumbled on the next play. The guy hitting Andy Lee’s plant leg was a bad call, and there were others like the Carlos Rogers’ unsportsmanlike, but that’s all apart of the game. We lost because our offense isn’t good enough. Now we get to retool our offense while losing players like Iupati and maybe even Aldon. Oh well. Go Niners.

    • NoFear49er's avatar NoFear49er says:

It’s bad form for the players and coaches involved, not for the people that watch the game and make judgments. The refs get an F on this game and that plays a part.

By the way, I don’t blame the loss on them even though they played a big enough part. They were an obstacle to overcome and we didn’t. Doesn’t mean we might not have the win without the obstacle to overcome.

The officials have an important job to do to run the game. When they fuck it up the game gets fucked up. And I complain having to watch and be on the losing end of a fucked up game.

You grind on the play calling although we obviously could have won despite all that had CK7 thrown the last ball to Boldin or VD or Patton. So neither the refs nor Roman’s plays killed us.

  18. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Lee pinned Sea at the 1 yard line. spitty, just shut the fuck up. This team CAN run and throw. Roman has to go, thought. I’ve completely had it with this shitty passing offense. With the players we have, and the time Kappy had, we should be doing much more with the passing game.

  19. Grumpy Guy's avatar Grumpy Guy says:

    Gore tonight:

First half: 7 carries, 12 yards.

Second half: 4 carries, 2 yards.

This team cannot win with that. Just not going to happen.

Or with multiple drops by Boldin, Crabs shying away from contact and VD disappearing most of the game.

Lynch finished 109 yards on 22 carries. We got pressure on Wilson but he got a couple of big plays by scrambling and picking on Rogers and our safeties.

So Kappy had to run and try to make plays that weren’t really there. The results of that were entirely predictable.

    And that’s your ballgame.
