Lossless in Seattle, and You Can Win a New Computer!

In a revolting turn of events yesterday, the Houston Texans snatched defeat from the jaws of victory after beating Seattle on all sides of the football. Matt Schaub threw one of the most ridiculous passes known to mankind with 3 minutes left. After Houston’s Jon Joseph picked off Wilson with 5:40 left in the game, and facing a 3rd and 4 from the Seattle 40, Schaub tried to hit TE Daniels by throwing across the field while moving backwards. He floated a dying quail that was easily picked off by Sherman for a pick 6. This tied the score in what was an otherwise dominating performance by Houston’s defense. Wilson was harassed all day and was held to 12 for 23, 123 yards and a pick. Marshawn Lynch had his usual tough day, running for 98 yards, but coughed up a fumble early. Wilson did spark the Seahawk late by scrambling for a ton of yards, including the 4 yard scramble on 4th and 3 from the Houston 7. A pretty big fail when you consider a couple guys had decent shots to stop him short. That made the score 20-13 and set up the later shenanigans.

This stinks for the local boys, as 4 games into the season, the Niners are already 2 games out of the lead for the division. This also makes the Houston game large in that we need to keep pace with Seattle for common opponents, and also, just to keep up with them. The galling part to this is Seattle could very easily be 2-2 with the Niners as both their road games were eminently winnable by both Carolina and Houston. The Carolina game was decided by a late fumble by DeAngelo Williams just as Carolina was nearing the end zone to take the lead late in the 4th quarter. And then the mush-head pass by Schaub to send this last game into OT. Lucky? Sure. But they made their luck by making those plays in crunch time.

The point being, Seattle is learning how to win on the road. Either by luck or by cruck, this is bad news for the 49ers.

Also, in case you missed in on the previous thread, Twinfan, eminent 49ers and Giants fan, and blogger extraordinaire, is running a baseball playoff contest for a free computer. I’ll give the specs later, but the entry is free. You don’t even have to take the computer if you don’t want it, but it is a bad-ass system with all the bells and whistles. Here are the details.

From Twinfan:

BTW, i’m having another contest for the major league postseason. Nice prize as always. Join in, you don’t have to accept the prize, you just can play for bragging rights. The contest details are at the link below and Craig will repost them this evening. the invitation is for all who post on chuck’s blog. He’s in. Snarkk and Flavor are in and several more. maybe i’ll do a comment here again next week.

  2. twinfan1 says:

chuck- have any interested folks either email me at michael.scott2@mchsi.com or flavor at bigflavor77@gmail.com.
or they can just announce it here, i’ll check periodically. deadline to enter is 4 today. deadline for wild card picks is 4 pm tomorrow for nl , 4 pm wednesday for al. better is to email both picks by 4 tomorrow to either address above.
i’ll post updated list of contestants this evening here and at flavors blog.

  3. How did Alex Smith make the MLB postseason? His legend is growing by the second.
Whatever team Alex plays for that’s who I’m taking — to choke in the Wild Card round.
Alex has the Cleveland Indians written all over him.

  4. And speaking of baseball, why the hell did Bud & Co. schedule tonight’s play-in game between TB and TEX opposite MNF? Nobody, and I mean nobody will be watching the baseball game > Monday Night Football. Bud Selig just keeps making one great move after another.

  5. unca_chuck says:

Because baseball is basically a regional sport on the airwaves. This’ll play big in TB and Arlington/Dallas

  6. snarkk says:

The NFL now plays on Sunday, Sunday night, Monday night, and Thursday night. If MLB genuflects to NFL scheduling, the World Series will end on Thanksgiving…

  7. 12th man says:

Why don’t the Niners put LMJ out wide or let him chip and catch like Sproles? LMJ is probably faster than Sproles too. Headshaker.

    • NoFear49er says:

He can’t block? He has to do it in practice first. Evidently it’s not part of the program or maybe LMJ isn’t impressing anyone there enough.

I always thought James would make a good pitch man if we stick with the option as a regular part of the offense. But I haven’t seen us use a pitch there yet

      • 12th man says:

The kid was electric in college, doesn’t always translate I know, but seem’s to me they should have a package of plays for him to use that speed and shiftyness (new word).
Sproles is only chipping then catch and run, no pancake blocks for him.

      • NoFear49er says:

It seems like a good idea to me. I sure thought we drafted him with that sort of player in mind. Maybe it’s the Frank Gore influence. Remember when we wasted Westbrook in Singletary/Jimmy Raye/Johnson? offense?

      • 12th man says:

Westbrook languished all year, crazy to waste a proven talent like that.
Good point about Gore. Maybe its a case of square peg/round hole talent to scheme but then you have to wonder why they drafted him? LMJ needs to be in space, he is too small to play traditional RB. Creativity is sorely lacking IMO.

  8. And even with 6 umpires, baseball gets the call wrong because replay won’t start until next year. Bud Selig and his sport are a goddamn laughingstock. If Texas comes back to win, I hope there are riots at Bud’s house and they burn his house down.

  9. twinfan1 says:

winder, flavor has you down as ‘sidewinder’ for the contest. that’s not you is it? i’ve known you as winder since way back..

    • Winder says:

That’s me twin, it’s an old name that seems to just hang around. Thanks for asking though. I shorted it everywhere but on Gmail I guess.

  10. unca_chuck says:

    Yes, Winder is Sidewinder.

  11. unca_chuck says:

Yeah, it’s a problem I have as well. LMJ did well when forced into action last year. Screens and pitches worked with him for the most part. He can bounce off DBs pretty well and get yards in space.

  12. I just sent TF an e-mail with my picks, Rays and Reds. If I missed the deadline, no biggie. All in good fun.

And since I already had to predict the entire playoffs for another contest…

    NL

    Reds > Pirates
    Cards > Reds
    Dodgers > Braves
    Cards > Dodgers

    AL

    Rays > Indians
    Sox > Rays
    Tigers > A’s
    Sox > Tigers

    WS

    Sox > Cards

  13. With it being All Saints’ Day, did you know that St. Denis, even after having his head chopped off picked it up and carried it through the streets of Paris preaching the Good Word.

I don’t know. I’m thinking I’m picking my chopped off head and looking for the nearest Paris saloon. I’m gonna need a few stiff belts to cure that one doozy of a headache.

  14. Wait? It’s only Oct. 1. I’m a month ahead. Put that story on hold for 30 days and repeat.
    I need a drink.

  15. unca_chuck says:

No wonder nobody gave you any candy yesterday . . .

  16. unca_chuck says:

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!DEADLINE TO ENTER CONTEST EXTENDED TO 4:00 PM TODAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  17. unca_chuck says:

And Dennis, you are in . . .

  18. Winder says:

chuck – Are you running a contest too?

  19. unca_chuck says:

No, this is the same one.

  20. unca_chuck says:

Here’s an interesting fact. Peyton Manning is tied for the most playoff losses with 11.

    He’s tied with Brett Favre.

  21. Irish Kevin says:

Okay so to continue from the Flap. So Chuck what you and Chi are saying is that the Niners do not a a speedy back that can do what Sproules did for NO last night? That is another area that the niners use to have. Roger Craig comes to mind as well as Wendal Tyler(?). I prefer speed and the ability to catch a pass over a power back for just up the middle. If that is all a football team has when the other Teams defense stops that their is nothing to fall back on. Which the Niners don’t have in there running game. If Gore is stopped the Niners don’t have a back up plan.

  22. unca_chuck says:

What I said was I don’t understand why they don’t use LMJ in that role. LMJ would be shit running like Gore. How they should use LMJ is outside, and use him for screens. Spread the field and send him on drag routes in space. We don’t throw screens. Gore does a lot of blocking so he isn’t a check down anymore. I’ve been questioning the passing schemes for a while now.

Tyler wasn’t much of a pass catcher. Craig was.

  23. Irish Kevin says:

Well then we are on the same page. I wish they would use LMJ more too. Speed is what you need in todays NFL, whether it is a WR or a back.
