What to do at 30?

Trent Baalke, he of the pretty damn good draft record in his two drafts (see below), says he has his guy all picked out for the 30th spot in the draft. He’s not saying, of course, but the wonks out there who think they know how shit like this go, say he will go WR, RG, or RB. WR Stephen Hill, he of the blazing speed and size (6’4″, 215 lb) would lend himself to be the perfect fit, as Harbaugh likes the bigger WRs that Walsh mostly liked, if he’s available. Sanu has been bandied about (please God no), and my personal fave (not really a WR, but he can be lined up as one) Coby Fleener.

RG? I don’t know enough about the draft  to even know. This isn’t like a couple years ago when they had a huge OL need, and filled it with Davis and Iupati. Guys who are solid if not spectacular. I see them taking a couple linemen, but I have no clue who.

RB? One guy who looks like he could work is Robert Turbin. He came for a visit, so at least he’s on the radar, and he’s a plugger at 5’10”-220 lb. A nice goal line guy. That is if Kendall Hunter comes on this year and starts to play like Gore as he roll sown toward the end of his career. You have to think they like Gore/Hunter as their featured back, and they’ll have Jacobs as the short yardage guy. This year. As next year rolls around, it could very well be Hunter/Turbin in those roles.

Other than that? Well, lots of prognosticators have the Niners beefing up their DLine. Guys like Dontari Poe get some love and hope, although he could possibly be there in the 2nd round as his motor and heart have been called into question. I wouldn’t risk it with him in the 1st round, although that 4.8 40 time is otherworldly for a guy his size. If he’s there with the 2nd? Sure. but not with the 1.

Anyhow, here’s Baalke’s two drafts. 11 of the 18 drafted played roles in the path to success last year. 4 were hampered by injuries (and 3 of the 4 are still with the team). Person and Kilgore are in the mix to take over the RG spot. The only flameouts curiously enough came from USC. Taylor Mays (the guy Sing wanted in the 1st round) and WR Ronald Johnson.

Why is Curtis Holcomb at the airport?

Lets sing for Sing. He wanted winners and got them a year later!

  3. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Sing was undone by the same thing Nolan was. He had no grasp of offensive continuity or flow. He wanted to play risk-free football, and it doesn’t work. You HAVE to be somewhat successful throwing downfield. VD was the only one who consistently made plays downfield, but that should be helped by Moss, Mario, and whoever they draft . . .

NFL mock draft has Chandler Jones going to the Niners.

  5. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

I’m gonna have to round up a bunch of site to see what they say. Walter, as well as SI’s Peter King, have Fleener going to the Niners. Although King says they SHOULD take Hill. If Hill IS there, he’d be hard to pass on. Even with Fleener there.

  6. Irish Kevin's avatar irishman5574 says:

    Walter Football has 4 choices
    Coby Fleener, TE
    Stephen Hill, WR
    Amini Silatolu G
    Kevin Zeitler G

  7. Irish Kevin's avatar irishman5574 says:

Most other sites have what Walter has.

Except some site called Drafttek, they have the niners choosing
    James Brown G from Troy.
    Let the musical comments begin!!

    NFL.com has the following:

    C Peter Konz
    DE Chandler Jones
    WR Stephen Hill
    CB Janoris Jenkins

Never heard of Konz. JJ is a reach at 30. Hill would be great. Jones? Don’t know.

  10. Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

Sando has us taking J. Jenkins as well. He thinks Willis and others in our locker room could tame his wild side and provide leadership to a guy with a history of numerous off-field indiscretions. Personally I think the kid is a fucking thug. A rule of thumb from the GM should be if you wouldn’t allow the guy to date your daughter you shouldn’t draft him. If Janoris Jenkins showed up on prom night wanting to take out little Missy, fathers around the world would greet him with a 12-guage in the ass.

    Pass.

Mel: Anything happens to my daughter, I got a .45 and a shovel, I doubt anybody would miss you.

      • Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

I don’t know why Mel was so worried, Alicia Silverstone’s boy had a thing for Tony Curtis and he brought over “Some Like it Hot” and “Sporadicus” to watch on their date.

      • Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

I’m partial to Tony Curtis myself, but I’d fuck the shit outta Alicia Silverstone first then watch his movies.

Great anecdote from Russ Francis on Bill Walsh and the Niners…

  13. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Francis was always an odd guy. The hippie-dippie philosophical football player. The well-read erudite bone crusher. Great stuff, Snarkk. I was happy we got him when we did. Even if it was tha tail-end of his career.

  14. RTFirefly's avatar RTFirefly says:

The Niners modified the personal conduct clauses in Francis’ contract so he could continue to parachute. I was one happy camper the day they stole him. Great player and I now know, great writer (messenger #81!).

  15. Nipper's avatar Nipper says:

Niners better get a good draft pick this time. I’m tired of stiffs. Okay I’m kidding just to get Chuck excited.

  16. Alleykat's avatar Alleykat says:

Cal’s WR Marvin Jones moving up draft boards as well. One draft analyst said at the Senior Bowl in Jan that Jones was the best reliever among the 11 he watched.6’2 200 lbs 4.46 40 yard dash and a willingness to block down field,a trait the 49ers like.
For me though I do like Stephen Hill more just alittle bigger and quicker.

Still want Guard DeCastro to lock up that OL for years, But if they don’t move up “Its. Baalke I Trust!!!! He will find a 49er Gold Nugget like Aldon Smith last year.

Where’s the birthday boy? Chuck’s probably waiting to get a hummer from his “draft crush,” Coby Fleener. He blows alright. Now we just need to get your fantasy team to start blowing.

    Happy Birthday.

  19. Nipper's avatar Nipper says:

Getting primed for the “meat market?” It’s still a crap shoot even with all the experts pontificating about their expertise. A lot of good ones don’t even get drafted! A lot of drafted guys are busts.

    • Del Mar Dennis's avatar Del Mar Dennis says:

Sometimes you pick good ones, sometimes not so good. Out of six draftees only three might make the grade. Unlike out of six drafts, they all go down the hatch — smooth and cold.

  20. barleyfreak's avatar barleyfreak says:

Draft day. Huzzah. After thinking long and hard, I’m changing my prediction. I don’t think Baalke picks guard OR wide receiver in the first round. My final generic by-position mock:

    1 — CB
    2 — WR
    3 — RB
    4 — DL
    5 — OL/G/C
    6 — WR
    7 — OLB
