Dallas, coming off a dismal 6-10 season, and an embarassing loss to the J-E-T-S on Sunday night would seem to be ripe for the plucking. Tony Romo tossed a game-ending INT in the last minutes, and fumbled and stumbled his way (5-12, int, lost fumble) to an epic 4th quarter meltdown which led to Nick Folk’s game winning 50 yard FG with 27 seconds remaining after Romo get them to a 14 point lead to start the 4th.
Dallas gained 340 yards through the air, so this looks to be a huge indication of how well our newly formed defensive backfield has coalesced. Witten, Romo’s favorite target, should be jammed at the line constantly. Knock him off his routes early and often. However, it’s hard to double him when they have Dez Bryant and Miles Austin waiting to catch balls. Regardless of Romo’s meltdown, Dallas has a strong passing game, but did give up 4 sacks that caused two Romo fumbles.
Bringing the pressure is going to be key. The Niners were able to get away with a fairly vanilla defense vs Seattle. The Niners were just blowing their O line away for the most part, so blitzing wasn’t used much, or needed much. The hope is that they dial up some different looks (like say Willis getting some backfield action) and get some unblocked guys in the backfield. Romo gets as skittish as a kitten when under constant pressure, hitting him early would help. The last time these guys played, the Niners were able to get pretty consistent edge pressure, but AF had one of his weakest games in his time here, and couldn’t push Stepnowski back, so Romo was able to step up and hit passes downfield.
Safety work is aslo big. Whitner and Williams played pretty well most of the game. Rogers had a nice breakup of a pass in the end zone, and Williams was wrongly called on the hit he laid on McCoy to break up a pass down the middle. Don’t know if Goldson even gets back in the line up after what they showed. There were only a couple times that the coverages were blown, and one of them went for a 55 yard score.
Offense? Well, we’ll see. Dallas gave up a lot through the air, and the Jets didn’t run much anyway. Keeping DeMarcus Ware in check looks to be a tall order. Getting a decent run game going woukld go a long way to helping out the offense as a whole. As the Jets showed, these guys can be passed on. But Dallas WILL bring pressure. VD needs to get his ass open, and Edwards should get some shit thrown his way. Crabs should be passed up by Kyle Williams very soon. Morgan? He’s a strong 3.
All in all, this game is a strong test for this young Niner team. Win, and they’ll be the toast of the NFL, for a few hours anyway. Lose a tough one, and they’ll still gain some recognition. Lay an egg, and the little attention these guys get will fall off the map. This game, more than last week’s game, will be determined by the QB play. Give Smith some time, and crowd Romo, and these guys can win this.

I think you’re right, Unca. I wonder if Goldson ever starts again. Williams and Reggie provide great competition, and Goldson has looked really slow. Could be the beginning of the end for Goldson.
I hope the Niners provide Alex Smith with some time to throw. After Romo’s last game, his confidence is shaken. If you blitz him, and you don’t get good hits on him, and he ends up beating the blitz, it could be trouble. I think the Niners should blitz him heavily and make Romo climb his way out of the doghouse.
There was a second blown coverage that should have been a TD. Tavares Jackson sucks, and is not going to make you pay for most of those. Romo is not great, but good enough to take what you hand him. The pass rush had better not let him sit back and get comfortable.
I don’t know that I’d expose some guys who haven’t played together much by going to a heavy blitz package. Romo is good but he’s no surgeon Just my opinion, if they do blitz,,the standard caveat- better get there.

There were at least 4-5 occasions where AF’s lack of push in the middle led to big passes by Romo, NoFear. And BTW, the Niners lost 35-21, Romo threw for 350 yards. Yeah, stopping the run was huge that day. If they didn’t stop the run they might have lost 42-21.

Not likely? So, you didn’t see the game, yet you are able to determine how well AF played. Duh. No long passes? 350 yards isn’t dinking and dunking, skippy. Romo would have been sacked I’d say 4 more times if AF was providing any push up front. As it was Romo was able to buy time by stepping up into the pocket and hitting his WRs.
OK, you made me look. TO had 213 yards that day, on 7 catches. So, yer non-existent memory of the game is a little less than reliable.
Let me explain it for you, NoFear. When the QB goes back to pass, and the defense gets outside pressure from the OLBs, if your nose tackle is doing his job, the QB will not have room to step up, buy time, and complete a pass. If you SAW the game, you’d understand that Romo completed 4 or 5 passes (including the 2 deep balls to TO) by doing exactly that. Stepping up in the pocket, buying time, and hitting his WR. Take away those 2 deep balls, and you’ve taken 110 yards off of Romo’s stats, and at least one TD off the board.
You are much like Geomak touting how well the Niners D did against Adrian Peterson when they held him to 28 yards. Great, they stopped him. But AP’s backup got 110 yards, and the Niners lost 27-7.
I’m not advocating heavy blitzing, but they need to get Romo on his heels.
You can’t really blitz with Alex Smith as your quarterback, but I’m advocating blitzing anyway. Romo is shaken. He knows if he strings together two bad games and the Cowboys start 0-2, with that stadium and those seat licenses that Jerry has to sell, he’s gonna start hearing it from everyone in Dallas. After Sunday’s gift to Revis in crunch time, Romo is going to play tight. I guarantee it. So play two deep over the top and blitz the bastard until the wheels fall off. Fangio is pickin’ up what I’m laying down.

It’s a simple formula really, and I’ll explain it without insults. If your offense is based on kicking field goals and playing field position – hoping for big special teams returns, blitzing the Christmas out of the opposition’s qb is dangerous. That’s just the way it is. I could go into the “why,” explaining in detail why the winning Harbaugh formula is the way it is, but that makes you insane, and Unca no likey.
But the interesting thing is the juxtaposition. On the one hand we have the previously mentioned now winning Niner formula. One the other, in this game against Dallas, we have a QB who is on the ropes mentally. When there’s blood in the water, you attack. Tony Romo has to be kicking himself thinking about stadium seat licenses, going 0-2 to start the season, and what a disaster it would be back home to lose to the lowly 49ers. Revis haunts him right now at night. He’ll play tight and conservative because of it. So I say gamble and blitz him early and often even though Alex Smith sucks more Johnson than Jessica Simpson.
What I’d expect from the Cowpatties is to test this new secondary of ours early and often.
We’re facing Rob Ryan more than we’re facing Romo too.
Ryan vs. Fangio is a nice angle. I like our LBs over theirs, and our secondary will have plenty of chances to prove how good we are against Miles/Dez and Witten.
Carlos played in the NFC East, let’s hope he has some comfort with their route tendencies.

I see Dallas as being very similar to us on the OL and in the Secondary. We hold an advantage with Frank perhaps as more of a receiver in this contest? Question is whether we have enough timing established for the quick hitters. Alex impressed me with his patience in the pocket Sunday and, I like our chances.
Not going to predict a W but, I’m hoping for a solid, confident effort that could keep us close enough to be victorious if we can play a similar mistake free game.

Dallas is going to play the now common “Prevent 49er Offense” — 8-9 men in the box, dare AS to beat them. JH’s game plan has to have something to make him beat them to open up some run. AS has to take some chances downfield. Throw some receivers open.
Week one had some big passing games. One thing I’ve really started to notice is how minimally “open” many receivers really are. Sure, they are occasionally WIDE open, but most passes seem to be to someone who barely has a step — and at the time of the throw, from the pocket, it’s gotta look practically non existent. My point is that accuracy is obviously huge, but so is the capacity to take the chance to make a big play. Mistakes are going to happen. I’d rather see AS take a chance downfield for a big play and toss an INT then watch check down passes against 8 man boxes leading nowhere.That ain’t gonna fly against DAL. In our case I truly believe the pass is setting up the run
On D — as mentioned, this is a big test of our pass defense. I expect we’ll get pressure on Romo. I also expect to get burned at least once. I just hope our O can keep up, and keep our D off the field. 3 & outs are gonna add up to a tired D. Bad formula.
The funny thing is, last year the Niners were 6th in points scored on game-opening drives. Hard to believe when you look at the rest of any given game. They would come out fairly fast and loose, score a TD, and then turtle up for a quarter or 3. Some say its the other team adjusting, but more often than not, it was the Niners slowing themselves down. Like the coaches didn’t want to press their luck any further and take chances. Baffling.
Just once I’d like to see a game not so heavily dependent on the run. Don’t let the other team getting ahead dictate your style of offense. All I hear is how the Niners can’t sustain going a little more pass happy. That’s hard to say when they NEVER do it.
Again, maybe we turtled up last game and treated it as a 5th preseason game, because we could. It worked. They sure didn’t blitz much (or need to), and they sure got one-dimensional in the red zone. It’s just that you hear these guys in practice saying things like “wait til you see what we’re working on.” And it’s a 32 run/20 pass game. As I posted before Numbnuts started in again, Fangio would not be wise to commit to the heavy blitz packages that Spitfuck proposes- this is not a backfield that has been together enough to expose them so early in the season.. As the more observant have noted, the conservative game plan Sunday was indeed to protect Smith- but to protect him from his own offensive line- which had produced some nearly disastrous results in the preseason. Spitfuck may want the QB dead, but Harbaugh? Probably not..Jim was confident they could handle the inferior Hawks and one of the basic tenets facing an inferior team- don’t make mistakes. Mission accomplished. Now the play calling was conservative to a fault but Harbaugh did’n’t need to show much and didn’t want to, with Dallas this week. Look for more cover than blitz on defense, a more aggressive offense ( probably 10-12 more passes) , and a 10 point Niner win.

TF is right if Harbaugh does not open up this offense he will be labeled Nolatary. And that was my problem with the first game. If you are really going to find out if it is worth keeping Alex for another year so that Kaper can learn the NFL or whoever the Niner want to be their next QB, then you have to have plays called that will force Alex to throw the ball down the field. Plus you are evaluating your offensive line, cause if Alex does not have time to throw or for WR’s to get open then the Niners need to get improvement on the O line. But none of this is relevant if there are no plays called to throw the ball down the field.
Tell you what- Spit says the offense is what it was last week.Based on knowing this game for 55 years, I’m telling you Harbaugh will be opening up the offense. I disagree that Harbaugh will get any kind of a reputation as conservative. He has the chops established already. He was Captain Comeback, and his offenses at Stanford routinely scored 50 plus points per game. If Harbaugh keeps it conservative, it will be because he’s trying to win with Alex Smith. Now don’t confuse me saying “he’ll keep it conservative” with the idea there won’t be new wrinkles. You can be both simultaneously conservative and throw a new wrinkle in there once or twice a week. But opening up the offense to three and four receiver sets, going seven step drops and having Smith look deep or twenty yards down field all day simply isn’t going to happen – not with young O linemen and Alex Smith.
This is Alex’s last year in SF. How do I know? It’s the stadium. That deal is deader than a doornail right now. To infuse life, Harbaugh needs TV ratings. Right now, NFL ratings are all about offensive football. What Harbaugh needs is a dynamic qb to get Jed York’s stadium deal back on track. Kaep probably won’t be ready next year. But one thing’s for sure, if you go into 2012 with Alex Smith as your qb, there won’t be anymore investment dollars available for a stadium Dump Alex, find a dynamic qb and Jed will get his Santa Clara stadium. Yeah, it may come to pass, but Smith has had more lives here than Morris the Cat. The thing about Harbaugh is he ran a power running game at Stanford. 2 TE sets and power blocking up front. He threw in a lot of shifts and movement, but his base offense was 2 TE beef up front. Gerhart rushed for 1870 yards his senior year. They primarily passed off of the running game.
This doesn’t mean much now, just that he’s familiar with using a power running game. Even WITH Andrew Luck at QB. The stadium deal in SC is a pipe dream. That shit will never fly. It’s going to be next to Candlestick, or they’ll take my idea and build a floating stadium that they can park different places in the bay.
I understand Harbaugh likes the power run game. I also understand pounding on the opposition opens up holes later in the game. But in the NFL your offense has to wear many hats. Sportswriters are fond of saying, “make ’em defend everything.” For Harbaugh to be successful at the NFL level, he needs a lot of tricks in his offensive bag. Singletary proved without a doubt you can’t just run over people. The NFL is too good, and defenses are too strong. For offenses to be dynamic, they need to run stretch plays, spread plays, power formations, play action, WCO plays, etc. I agree with what you wrote awhile ago. Where’s the slant? I think the answer is, the Niner O isn’t capable of doing all these things, AND Harbaugh hasn’t had the time to install as much as he’d like. File “where’s the slant,” under not capable. If you have eight in the box because Alex can’t get the D on its heals, there are too many guys underneath to pull off the slant. But getting back to my original point, I doubt Harbaugh gets a conservative reputation. People trust and respect Harbaugh enough to know that he’s doing what his team is capable of.
I think there is a shot at the stadium deal getting done IF the Niners dump Alex Smith.

As the year goes on they’ll want the WCO offense they remember- and they’ll love the hell out any QB who runs it successfully.
Getting the stadium is predicated on the Niners being successful no matter who is at QB. As of now, it’s Harbaugh’s job to make Alex successful. Can he do it? Well, you never know. Stranger shit HAS happened. As with all the Brodie talk, sometimes guys get their shit together later in their careers. Sometimes the right circumstance presents itself. Plunkett was forever surrounded by shitty teams (NE, SF) until he got to Oakland (or LA, I can’t remember). Does this mean Smith suddenly becomes a winner? Hah! We will see soon enough. If we know anything, the team as it stands right now is a solid if unspectacular middle-of-the-pack team. As we all know with (sorry, V) parity, teams can turn shit around pretty fast just by a few tweaks here and there. An offense that develops into a half-way effective unit would go a long way to becoming a solid slightly formidable football team. God forbid Smith develops into a decent starter. Another thing that could very well happen. Then what?

Regarding the stadium, I just don’t think Harbaugh will ever turn Alex into a Super Bowl contender, or human highlight reel. Alex Smith doesn’t have the vision, he’s too slow of foot, his delivery is really slow, he telegraphs his passes, still has radar lock and he isn’t mobile. I’ve read Unca and Grump’s saying because of Brodie there’s still hope, but they’re wrong. Harbaugh will improve Smith’s play because of play calling and better articulation of what to do against certain defenses, but he isn’t going to build a new quarterback out of Alex Smith parts. Alex Smith will improve but not enough to bring a new stadium.
The stadium gets built if Harbaugh and Baalke find a dynamic quarterback true fans can get excited about. The Niners need an Aaron Rogers, Mike Vick, Phillip Rivers-type to push the stadium through. Granted, those guys don’t grow on trees, but that’s exactly what the Yorks need to get their stadium deal done. Just dumping Alex Smith would go a long way towards raising more capital.

With the way the economy is the stadium is toast, unless it is funded like AT&T. There is no public funding available, see Sacramento Kings as an example. So unless some private investers come up with a plan, it is not happening.
