In a season full of pitching debacles and crushing losses, they managed to pull one out for the ages.
Yes, the biggest blown 9th inning league in the 125 year history of the team. They were 2,208-0 when leading by 6 or more in the 9th. Til today.
Up 9-3 in the top of the 9th, the team could not even get an out before Cincy tied it. Bivans came in and really had no clue. Not sure why whoever the interim manager even was didn’t pull him a little faster, but I think it was pretty obvious Bivens didn’t have it. He gave up the longest home run into the cove that I’ve ever seen. Then again, Smith came in and nuked the joint. And the rest was errors, walks and general rookie ball crap.
I guess the lockout is a blessing.

Bivens was ok out of the pen the last two years. Pretty heavily used last year. He languished all of this season in Sac until the recent emergency call ups occurred. Now we know why he languished, although his nosedive is still a bit perplexing.
Xoot, good question: why the nose dive by Bivens? I was asking myself the same thing. iirc, he was decent in 24, then sustained some sort of injury late in the season last year, then disappeared. Not sure if he was even in ST this year? Just looked it up .. 2024 he pitched about 40 innings, era just over 3; last year, about 80 innings, with an even 4.00 era. Also, read that in college (Penn State) he lost his spot on the team because he failed a drug test. Eh, he should’ve never cut his dreds.
81 IP last year put him fifth on the team, after starters. Most used guy out of the pen, then. 1.333 whip. Ok. Says something about the season, too. Gotta recall RRod and Walker blowing up and Rogers being traded. So, Bivens was as consistent as it got.
Exactly Xoot .. “Most used guy out of the pen” .. 2024 was Biven’s rookie year at age 30, and his numbers (48.1 IP; 1.192 ERA) that year, plus a quite reasonable showing in 2025 leads me to think we need to give him as long a look as we can.

btw, “Crossroads” bio of his is fantastic read from early life in Cal through playing days (did win WS with hated ones) and managing career, where he finally won another. Went through quite a lot on personal side, physically and otherwise.

Tugboat looks a lot better than I expected him to be. Focused, deceptive (if not invisiball), determined. Six strong shutout innings against a decent team? Ok.
Giants first game today so far — the usual, though maybe not so usual anymore, fetid offense for the Gigantes. Tugboat doing well.

Good-by Buddy Kennedy. DFA’d yesterday when Eldridge returned. Looks like his bad bunt defense during the 9th inning of the debacle wasn’t overlooked. I gotta give guys like him credit. They go from org to org, getting some MLB time here and there. Kennedy has been with 7 organizations, a career 92 games with 230 PAs, with amazingly bad slash .165/.261/.245 with two home runs and 21 RBI. He even got a ring with LA last season. Guys like him must know they’ll never be real, serious major leaguers. Looks like the occasional stop in MLB is enough for them. They love ball so much; they know they’ll probably just turn into coaches anyway, when the team-to-team carousel is done. Lifers, I guess there’s comfort in being one.
Adumass. I said the other day the Giants ought to just sit him the rest of the year. Looks like now that might happen, not by choice. Slusser said yesterday that he saw the same elbow doc that Brock Purdy saw, and it looks like he’ll need at least a month or so for that left wing to recover, no word on any procedure needed. So, looks like case closed on a rotten season with this guy. He admitted to Slusser it’s his worst season ever. Nice. The thing is, he’s not getting any better. And, Slusser apparently said she heard from unnamed Giants sources that they know they are a better defensive team right now without his tin glove and shotgun arm. Duh.
Boy, with the Giants 3-8 over the last 11 tilts, the 30 games under water mark looks doable maybe by early/mid next week.
I heard the other day that the Niners have something like 25 guys on their pre-cutdown total roster that are injured in various degrees, to the extent they weren’t practicing, anyway. The closest NFL team to that is the Raiders with 16. Huh? How is that possible to have such a discrepancy between teams? Something is obviously wrong the way the Niners prepare and practice their players to have such a consistently high injury list count that is so much worse than the rest of the NFL.

They keep bringing guys up from Sac, and most pretty much look like they don’t belong in MLB. The talent deficit with Giants at their AAA level is just amazing. What the hell did Farhan and this current FO do / not do to get to this position?
Anyway, Tugboat did pretty well. Good for him, at least one weak positive sign.

Any other club, Walker is long, long ago DFA’d, and now with another organization. Instead, he’s back up and doing the same lame crap he did when he got banished a couple of months ago. How many chances does this guy get? He can’t be trusted with men on base. If he is anywhere near the Giants next February in Scottsdale, it better be with another team.
