In a season full of pitching debacles and crushing losses, they managed to pull one out for the ages.
Yes, the biggest blown 9th inning league in the 125 year history of the team. They were 2,208-0 when leading by 6 or more in the 9th. Til today.
Up 9-3 in the top of the 9th, the team could not even get an out before Cincy tied it. Bivans came in and really had no clue. Not sure why whoever the interim manager even was didn’t pull him a little faster, but I think it was pretty obvious Bivens didn’t have it. He gave up the longest home run into the cove that I’ve ever seen. Then again, Smith came in and nuked the joint. And the rest was errors, walks and general rookie ball crap.
I guess the lockout is a blessing.

Blowing a lead of 6 or more runs in the 9th has happened 22 times in MLB history, about once per team or about as rare as a perfect game.
If it happens again this season then there’s something to celebrate. It’ll be almost as savory as empty seats in the ballpark.

Eek, way off on the Penguins, not til early ’90s. There was definitely one year when Pittsburgh was crowned best sports town in the US because of their multiple teams winning the big ones.

I think young unknown Whitcomb saved Walker’s ass with a fine stop at 3B that could’ve been a double, with two on.
for years at the end of disappointing seasons we’ve been saying play the kids. This may be the first time that’s truly happened. Fairly enjoyable. Wouldn’t want it to become a long term habit….
It’s nice to see something good come out of this season. Next ST we will probably see the youngest Giants team ever. As for the remainder of this season all I hope and pray for is a Dodgers total meltdown. I could live with that.
For those who like to read I just started a book called ‘The Nerd Reich’ by Gil Durand. interesting stuff.
Oh yeah as of now we only have 5 out of the ten 4 star Generals who are supposed to be running the Pentagon. The only thing I can think of is the Titanic.
Seems like for years the Giants always have “older” kids. Aside from 21 year old Eldridge, there’s no one on the current roster under 24. Even Whitcomb is 27.
Maybe in September they’ll bring up some real neophytes (thanks, Clyde).

It is indeed somewhat entertaining watching some of these *young’uns*, now that winning/losing doesn’t matter. Some of them seem to be enjoying themselves, playing loose. Looks like Devers, as one of the few vets on the field these days, is right there, talking to them, applauding them. The only thing a little weird is, we certainly hear of key prospects as they perform/progress, but I had never even heard of most of these guys (Hill, Cox, Furman, Whitcomb), have no idea where they seemingly suddenly came from. My guess is only one or two of them might be viable for the future. But hey, let ’em play. Wish that would happen in the bullpen, too. One of the better relief performances recently was Molina, who I think they got from Atlanta for Mahle. And color me surprised how Gilbert has progressed into what looks like a decent lead off hitter.
How many guys have big careers that debut at 24 and beyond? I’m sure plenty, but generally if they’re not up before that it’s probably not a good sign.

You’re probably right, it seems the *phenoms* coming up at 21 and 22 seem to take hold better. The only recent Giant I can think of was Yaz, who started late. I really liked him, but I understand that doesn’t mean he had / is having a big career….
Wonder if Marco Luciano is still trying to have any kind of career, nevermind a big one…
