In a season full of pitching debacles and crushing losses, they managed to pull one out for the ages.
Yes, the biggest blown 9th inning league in the 125 year history of the team. They were 2,208-0 when leading by 6 or more in the 9th. Til today.
Up 9-3 in the top of the 9th, the team could not even get an out before Cincy tied it. Bivans came in and really had no clue. Not sure why whoever the interim manager even was didn’t pull him a little faster, but I think it was pretty obvious Bivens didn’t have it. He gave up the longest home run into the cove that I’ve ever seen. Then again, Smith came in and nuked the joint. And the rest was errors, walks and general rookie ball crap.
I guess the lockout is a blessing.

What’s interesting about all of the metrics specific to bullpens — saves, BS, save %, inherited runners scored % — is that the Giants don’t stand out as particularly shitty. The cumulative stats don’t split out ERA by pitching role, but it’s the number that tells the overall story. This isn’t a very good bullpen for the most basic of reasons, namely they give up a lot of hits, walks, and runs. Most of that damage has actually been done when the bullpen comes in with the team already trailing. Fixing the bullpen has little to do with finding the right “roles” for the specific players, including the closer.
See any fixes for pen, James? Kilian past 3 outings he hadn’t walked anyone, K’d 7 and was 3-3 in saves. Last night he couldn’t get anyone out. All managers seem locked into specific closer (which Giants weren’t about to spend Suarez or Diaz $ on) as opposed to committee.
Do Giants guys lack “stuff’? Or is it more command of same, like Miller or ill fated Walker? Do you think Bivens can be of any help? Winn? Smith and Hentges were fine last night…
Killian didn’t exactly get rocked, either. GB past Arraez, a bunt single and a 68 mph grounder up the middle. Hentges, Winn, Miller, and Killian all have very good arms and a plus secondary pitch. The number of walks Hentges and Miller have issued is insane, but they’ve had better command in the past and are looking effective now. Smith is interesting as a converted starter. Brubaker is a fluke, I think, may as well give his innings to Bivens or someone else. The majority of the really bad innings have been confined to Walker, Gage, and Borucki. Swap two of them out for Rogers and Roberto Suarez and the bullpen suddenly looks a whole lot better, even with the other names above.
so if we had a closer and a strong eighth inning guy we’d be better?
Well, not just better, but kinda good with mostly the same bullpen.
Hard to blow a save when you are losing by 4.
Yep, that’s why the just below league avg. save percentage is germane. They blow leads at the rate of a 500 team, not a bottom feeder. The fact that they don’t have many leads to blow is largely the fault of the bigger culprit, the SPs.

Glad we got those runs I think we just pissed off their pitcher
reasonably good day for the Giants. Odd game. Rockies pitcher was awfully arrogant for a guy with his stats. He made an ABS challenge during the Giants’ first AB. He was pretty much lights out, too, until he got sloppy for a few ABs in one inning. So, no matter what happens tomorrow, we’re not in last place.
And the draft seemed good. A bit revealing, I guess. Perhaps Buster will go after pitchers at the deadline, too?
Fairly obvious issue with the team.
Buster traded away pitching last year, Harrison and Rogers. And he grievously slighted it over the winter. (I’ll never understand signing Borucki at the end of ST (and then overusing him despite his worthlessness — but, that’s on V I suppose).) Buster can’t cure all the staff problems now, especially if he trades Ray. The knots he needs to untie are gnarly.
oh yeah. He dumped Doval last year, too.
I mean, all the problems are obvious. The question is: what’s Buster’s plan? Last year he boldly made the Devers trade becz he could, the opp was there and he pulled the trigger. But that wasn’t planned. He failed to plan well over the winter. Surely he’s wiser now, right? Right? Let’s see.
Rogers I really thought we’d get back. Harry and Doval were crap. I get why he traded them. But I didn’t get Mahler, Dookie being all we did and praying for Walker. Borucki was even more of a prayer.
And the pen is truly a bunch of no-names.
