In a season full of pitching debacles and crushing losses, they managed to pull one out for the ages.
Yes, the biggest blown 9th inning league in the 125 year history of the team. They were 2,208-0 when leading by 6 or more in the 9th. Til today.
Up 9-3 in the top of the 9th, the team could not even get an out before Cincy tied it. Bivans came in and really had no clue. Not sure why whoever the interim manager even was didn’t pull him a little faster, but I think it was pretty obvious Bivens didn’t have it. He gave up the longest home run into the cove that I’ve ever seen. Then again, Smith came in and nuked the joint. And the rest was errors, walks and general rookie ball crap.
I guess the lockout is a blessing.

You know what would make me kinda admire Buster right now? If he extended Ray and Arraez, and declared that he really believes in this team. If he said “this is just a bad penny year, my decisions have been solid, just wait until next year when everything goes right. I’ll sign or trade for a couple bullpen arms and a starting pitcher, and we’ll be all good, trust me.” That would be in keeping with the spirit of the age.

My two snarkettes in their mid / late 20s are doing me and my love of baseball proud tonight. They are at Fenway in the right field bleachers watching the BoSox take on the Nats. The younger one is going to grad school there and the other is visiting her. Younger one commenting that Fenway “feels so much smaller than Oracle and Mariners’ ballpark”. Sending me some great pics/vids.
I’ve never been, hope to go someday, maybe when the Giants (when they’re again competitive) are in for a series…
Chi and I were there for the Red Sox and Giants game . . . Then fast forward to NY, where we saw them battle the Yankees. They got sweeped by the Red Sox and the Yankees won 2 out of 3 (I think). Of course, we were at the game where the Yankees beat the Giants. Anyway, it was nice to see Peter (Gianthead in Boston for dinner), and Mac, San Dog (and his son), Loo, and Dennis on this trip.
I digress though . . . Fenway was cool. Chi and I explored both the inside and outside (great shops and restaurants on this one street, where traffic is blocked off during games). That being said, the seats must be for midgets, as they were quite small. Loved walking around Boston though . . . it is definitely a walking city, particularly the Freedom Trail. Sheesh, we must have done 20-25 thousand steps, maybe more – per my wrist watch/step counter the one day we had to tour the city.
Yeah, Lisle, I mentioned that Sabean quote, although it didn’t involve Vitello, he said that when Buster was first hired in that role. While Buster deserves at least 3 years, V probably does not….. interesting article on his lack of communication. I wonder if he’s afraid of player blowback of his decisions. Snarkk: Yeah, Fenway is the best. Can’t even count the number of games I saw there in my Boston years. Recently rewatched Field of Dreams, and a smile crossed my face during the scene where they go to Fenway to watch that game: the sights, the sounds, the smells, so clear. A true baseball cathedral. And yeah, right outside on Lansdowne Street, the restos and nightclubs… always quite the scene on a weekend night with the baseball crowd spilling out of Fenway while the party crowd is just arriving on Lansdowne. Hope your daughters enjoy!
The game wasn’t great (8-1 Nats win), but there was a big brawl. They thought that was cool…

I doubt Chapman is injured. This is who he is. He had that 8 RBI game against the Cubs on the 4th or 5th of June and since then, he’s been MIA a la the first 2 months of the season.
Giants offense was all Arraez, with a bomb by Devers. The other zombies all had goose eggs. No energy at all.
Chapman has a history of getting hurt mid season and out for substantial time. I heard him on a post game interview tonight saying essentially he’s been babying this for some weeks and now it just gave out, whatever it is. Conveniently explaining his essentially O for the last 3 weeks of ABs. This team is just flat terrible. Maybe they’ll win a few with Adames and Chapman out of the lineup
Yeah, that he has . . . One reason why I did not want to sign him. Moreover, he has not shown himself to be a consistent offensive player.
When Schmitt, Lee, and Eldridge aren’t involved in the offense, it is impossible for me to watch this team. The chance that those 3 might not sustain the success they’ve had this year is too depressing.
my tolerance may vanish when they trade Arraez. That HR last night — the way he feasts on a fat pitch — got me again.
Giants had Arraez in camp in spring 2024. But, his name was Otto Lopez. Yeah, beating a dead horse, but they had this guy, and let the Marlins take him for nothing. Toronto had passed on him, yes, but the Giants barely took a look, I think he never even played one game for Sac. He blossomed for the Marlins in 2025, and this season he is one of the best players in MLB.
It is amazing that this season Lopez and Arraez have eerily similar offensive stats. Lopez’ are a bit better overall. Lopez has a bit better BA, and OPS+ of 139 v 137, Lopez has more steals. Imagine if they had kept Lopez for at least some AAA time before just cutting him loose offhand, and he developed into what he is now. Probably no Adames albatross deal, and the SS position cemented potentially for at least 5 years. Just another example or organizational failure — to identify and develop talent coming in and talent they draft, but let go and somebody else reaps the benefit.
Lopez is having a stellar, breakout year. He was pretty mediocre for Miami last year. I don’t know exactly what that change says about Miami. Seems impressive, though. Arraez has been hitting for years. His D was the drag. Allegedly. The Giants helped him put that bad rap to bed. One of the few highlights of our 2026.
also I’d say that Miami mishandled Arraez when they had him for those few years, forcing him to play 1B and not developing his 2B skills. But I’m guessing.
The Giants did once have a pretty sharp manager who might’ve had something to do with Lopez coming to the Marlins.

although, now that you mention it, when Kapler had a solid roster except for the OF, which required and received platooning, he won 107. Thereafter the roster turned sour and though he took the fall it wasn’t entirely his fault that more frantic platooning failed. Z blew it. In some ways, V’s got it even worse.
Take a look at the distribution of PAs in 2022-23. Maybe less platooning than we remember. Injuries limited Belt, Longoria, and Crawford, not to mention the catastrophic drop off in Crawford’s performance. Which isn’t to say that if Vitello and Kapler sat down to play an actual game of chess I’d consider putting money on the former.

No, you can blame it on an absurd 2021 from Crawford. If he’d signed him to a one year extension, which he pretty much had to do, at the very least, how much less absurd would that have been?
maybe craw would’ve gone elsewhere if the Giants had insisted on year to year. Or maybe he would’ve played harder in 22 if he’d accepted. Who knows.

Dunno how many here are watching the World Cup. I’m definitely watching it. I wasn’t raised at a time soccer was much of anything, and only played soccer once in a while when my high school PE coach thought he’d break things up with a bunch of running up and down the football field chasing a soccer ball. Ugh.
Now, I have the time to watch these extended highlights. Probably the fact I don’t have to watch all the dead time in a game makes it exciting. I had not realized how great of athletes these guys are. Running, cutting, dribbling with the feet, jumping to make headers on goal and wrestling with guys on the other team for position at goal mouth in these corner kicks. Mbappe of France the other day made a dribble near the goal that faked the defender into the popcorn machine and then blasted a shot into the far corner of the goal. I had to replay that 3X before I figured out what he had done with his feet while dribbling and faking out the defender. Friggin’ amazing. Messi at 39 years old is just beyond description. Slices and dices and fakes out guys nearly half his age, then blasts a shot from 25 yards through three defenders into an upper corner.
So far, my top guys are the usual suspects — Messie, Mbappe, Kane of England, that tall dude Haaland from Norway, and that short, quick forward Vini Jr. from Brazil. All very different, but consistently getting it done for the team, often with spectacular plays. Plenty of other brilliant players on other teams, but these stand out. Mbappe could probably be a halfback for the Niners. Quick, fast, crazy acceleration, and tough…
