In a season full of pitching debacles and crushing losses, they managed to pull one out for the ages.
Yes, the biggest blown 9th inning league in the 125 year history of the team. They were 2,208-0 when leading by 6 or more in the 9th. Til today.
Up 9-3 in the top of the 9th, the team could not even get an out before Cincy tied it. Bivans came in and really had no clue. Not sure why whoever the interim manager even was didn’t pull him a little faster, but I think it was pretty obvious Bivens didn’t have it. He gave up the longest home run into the cove that I’ve ever seen. Then again, Smith came in and nuked the joint. And the rest was errors, walks and general rookie ball crap.
I guess the lockout is a blessing.

Vitello’s management of the bench has been heavily scrutinized, and the way he handled Christian Koss early in the 2026 season is the perfect example of it. Koss essentially earned his way onto the Opening Day roster by absolutely tearing up the Cactus League during Spring Training (slashing .423/.545/.423). With the Giants needing defensive flexibility, Koss was brought north to serve as a reliable, high-end defensive utility infielder who could give guys like Adames or Arraez a breather across the diamond.
Instead of treating a utility guy like Koss as a fluid weapon for late-game matchups, pinch-running, or defensive replacement duties, Vitello completely iced him on the bench. Ditto for Cox. Koss only appeared in 10 games over the first month and a half. He was forced into completely cold, sporadic plate appearances, going just 1 for 14 (.071) in 15 rare plate appearances. When he did get used, it was sometimes in completely non-traditional ways – like being sent out to the mound to pitch the final three outs of a blowout loss to the Mets. How insulting.
My bet is that Vitello doesn’t survive this season. Good riddance. Minasian can join him too.
The Gilbert thing is an absolute pisser. Cox should at least get more than one start a week. Or whatever he’s getting.

I give that dude until mid-next season before a Tommy John situation. Unless he’s the second coming of Nolan Ryan, you don’t throw 100+ consistently and not develop elbow problems. IDK if that kind of velocity would survive longer in a closing role, but that would be an awesome tool as closer. I think he has decent command even at those Mach 1 speeds.
Webb’s gem yesterday again just bumps his trade value into the stratosphere.
Most seem to think that won’t happen, that doesn’t mean it should not. In improving your team, a GM has to be bold when the opportunity presents. I think this is a situation with more opportunity than getting Devers, which unfortunately has turned sideways, at best. Sabes traded Matt Williams and got ripped for it, but it turned out to be a great move.
Webb would generate a friggin’ haul. That, plus Ray and Arraez, and your farm system suddenly jumps 10 spaces up the ratings ladder, including young arms desperately needed, if you do it right. The only question there is whether the Posey/Minasian team would get the “right” haul that eventually delivers at the MLB level. I’m not sure at all that they have the smarts in evaluating and then developing talent to do it “right”…

He’d be insane to extend now and blow off free agency auction in the offseason — he’s going to draw a lot of cash in that next contract. Besides, there is nothing to stop Buster from trading him, get some prospects, then re-sign him in the offseason. It’s been done before (like Yanks and Araldis Chapman).
What you said, particularly the last part. I think Arraez appreciates the Giants giving him a chance. Conversely, the Padres wouldn’t play him at his natural 2nd base position. He also appreciates Washington, whom assisted in turning his defense around. Emotionally, I am like Kat, I hope he’s allowed to stay, but logically, he is a key trade piece to get something in return. The Giants will definitely trade him before the deadline. Here’s hoping we make a sincere attempt to sign him when he is a free agent.

I was thinking before that Buster saying this early on that Webb was off the trade table may be a case of “he doth protest too much”. He can’t be so stupid that he wouldn’t listen to blow-away offers of talent.
If Webb wants to win, he should be demanding to be traded. He can always come back to SF after his deal runs out, but he might sign an extension with the new team at big chee$e guaranteed long-term; he’s now on a very team favorable deal at this talent level…
