The front office continues to make a little headway in my eyes of not being the blind mice they appear to be. After what looked like a very successful draft weekend, they go ahead and sign George Kittle to a four-year, $76.4 million contract extension that includes $40 million guaranteed, per Ian Rapoport.
And yes, he’s the highest paid TE in the league, by a skosh. 78 catches, and 1,106 yards, and 8 TDs attest to his production. Another great year in a great career. So, all that’s left is to sign our quarterback.
I’m thinking this will be handled fairly shortly. Or some time before May 27th. The first day of the mandatory OTA workouts.

One of the best reasons for me to love the Kittle signing is that he will for sure be on the 10 year wall and probably be one of the most loved 49ers of all time.

OT Jedrick Wills
This is another former first-round pick who hasn’t lived up to the hype. Wills was the No. 10 overall pick by the Cleveland Browns in the 2020 draft. The Alabama product started 15 games as a rookie and actually put together his best season as a pro. It was downhill for his next four seasons with the Browns. If the 49ers are looking to add competition for the backup tackle spot, betting on a former 10th overall pick would make a lot of sense.
Humphries played 2 games with KC last year and gave up 3 sacks and around 10 pressures. Wills sounds better for no other reason than I know nothing about him!
In two games with the Chiefs, Humphries was not good. He missed a combined eight blocks, bringing his blown block percentage to 9.2 — a number that would’ve led the NFL and nearly triple that of Colton McKivitz in 2024. He gave up two sacks and was penalized once.
Humphries will need to prove he can regain his ability from pre-injury. The instant reaction might lead you to believe he is signing to be a swing tackle, but a player who has played as much as Humphries is coming in to start.
Humphries has not played right tackle since 2016. Not that he can’t, but it’s been an eternity since he was asked to play that position. His best chance to see the field, barring a Trent Williams injury, is on the right side.

These guys really do not want to use 1st rd on rookie OT. Maybe Humphries] proves he can do LT when TW injured and Jedrick comes on board also.
I think I’d rather have Humphry the Whale. He won’t last long.
Gotta watch the roster cuts following the Draft additions now. There will be carnage at every position. At this point it’s simply a depth replacement process.
Let’s hope he doesn’t have to spend much time in the starting rotation.

So, this draft was all about the D, according to Niners Nation, Kyle/Lynch have never made the Oline a priority in the draft. I hope Brock is not running for his life on 3rd and long
Walsh never made the O-Line a priority. His only 1st rd pick was Haris Barton. His reasoning was that he can design and call a play around a weakness on offense. You can’t hide a weakness on defense. Reading that in one of his books is where I got my affinity for wanting D-Linemen for high draft picks. Walsh and Siefert took a lot of heat for drafting so many D-linemen. It seemed to work well over the years.
Walsh drafted undersized linemen that could pass/run block. Granted players have gotten bigger and faster but you’re going to tell me you can find players who can do both. Oh that’s right we are talking about the Niners that prefer to run and only pass when necessary. So they look only for players that can run block. This has been the case way before Kyle/Lynch era. Think Alex Smith. Good strategy!!
Although Kittle has an “average per year” or APY that now makes him the highest paid TE in the league it’s a BS number.
Kittle is guaranteed $40m, McBride is guaranteed $43m. McBride is still the highest paid TE in reality.
Kittle has now signed 3 contracts with the 9ers and deserves every Shekel, good for him.
My guess is Purdy will get a 5 year contract extension with only 2 years guaranteed, the rest of the years being voidable at the teams discretion. I expect to see a $51m APY which is as BS as Kittles APY.
Brock likely gets $100m in fully guaranteed money or thereabouts and that’s a lot of cheese.
Don’t pay attention to the headlines of how much per year and how many years, all that matters is what the team guarantees the player. The rest is wishful thinking and BS publicity.
Purdy is a 6’0.5″ short QB. When Peyton Manning was starting the Saints QB at the same time was only 6 ft with an excellent oline that when pocket started to collapse the OL would also block the OL from jumping or putting hands up long enough to block the QB from seeing the field. Do any of our IOL noted for doing that well?
His name was Drew Brees. His lineman were noted about being good at this. This maybe killing Purdy when there are deep patterns with that pocket blocking his view.
This could be a sticking point in the negotiations. Management wants to continue to bottomn-bitch the IOL and Purdy maintains he needs better blockers to see the field.

The Niners were stuck in a hard place this draft, if we didn’t fix this defense we were surely gonna have a losing season no matter if we got a rookie tackle or not. We missed out on the 3 supposedly locks by the time 11 came around. I agree we have pretty much ignored the OL by drafting future hopefuls. With our new TE and RB’s we should be able to take some heat off Purdy, and hopefully Purdy doesn’t get hammered to often. We will see.
It is true that if the defense did a better job last year, we would have won a lot more. ST as well. That still doesn’t address the late-game breakdowns tho.
Teams simply get us to be pass-happy and then the pass pro breaks down.
I still think a lot of that is on Shanny for being so predictable and our backups weren’t up to the challenge.

Even Deebo looked like crap last year. I lost count on how many end arounds where he only got 2/3 yards. Defenses were sitting on it. And we keep trying it. I’m gonna take a good look at what he does in Washington.
This is my main contention with Shanahan. He did very little to change the fortunes of the team. His idea seemed to be ‘hey,everything will be fine when CMC comes back.’ it took forever, and once he got in, Shanny used him till he broke again. The offense was more than predictable, and there were no mid-game adjustments.
This is a recurring problem. Yeah, RBs get hurt, but under Shanny, it is 3 guys per season. He needs to learn how to spell RBs.
He needs to learn how to change tactics mid-game. Like Harbaugh before him, they seem to start out well and get beat in the 2nd half. Over and over and over.
