Mykel Williams, Come on Down

As far as drafts go, this one was all over the map according to the wonks. But like I always say, fuck the wonks. I like the pick. Williams is an edge-setting DE, and that is something this team needs. Williams is young, a bit raw, but very athletic and looks to grow and learn from the get-go. I like the pick as it wasn’t a reach and it fills a big need. For once they went the way I thought they should.

Banks and Membou were both taken, so that made our pick all the more easy. The coulda had a more polished guy like Kenneth Grant, but there are still a lot of DT available at 43. TJ Sanders springs to mind. Would love to get him.

Surprises? Jax throwing the kitchen sink at Cleveland to get Travis Hunter. Cleve now will get Mason Graham and (100% lock) Shadeur Sanders and a boatload of picks. I think Cleveland wins that deal hands-down. Jax is Jax.

Also a bit surprising is the New York Giants trading up to get Jaxon Dart. Sanders fell out of the 1st round, reminiscent of the draft snubbing of Aaron Rodgers all those years ago, but hey, it would be a trip to see Sanders go to the Raiders if Cleve doesn’t take him with their 33rd or 36th pick. I hope he goes to Oakland, uh Vegas. They’d be fun as shit with Jeanty, Sanders, and Bowers.

Also a bit stunning is the two Super Bowl foes a) made a trade, and b) got huge bang for their bucks with their picks. The Iggles traded up one slot to get the baddest LB in the group, Jihaad Campbell, and KC filled a position of need, getting OT Josh Simmons. Simmons is a rick coming off patellar tendon surgery, but if he works out, he’s a steal.

Day 2 approaches. Scourton’s off my board since we got Williams. TJ is who I’d like. Not many OTs anymore, but I wonder if we may take a flyer on a guy like LB Carson Schwesinger. Lots of CBs available as well, including (!) Will Johnson, Trey Amos, Shavon Revel, Azareye’h Thomas, and Benjamin Morrison.

    Love the first 2.

Not feeling the next 2. Stout is gonna be our slot CB.

    Martin our weak side LB.

    • Winder's avatar Winder says:

Stout is another Ward in the making. He’s perfect for the slot. The only problem will be his agresiveness and like all out DB’s prone to penalties. I think I like this pick a lot.

    • Winder's avatar Winder says:

If Martin’s knee is ok then he has the same type of play as did Greenlaw it just might take a while for it to show in the pro game just like Greenlaw’s did. But the knee is still a big if to me.

  2. Winder's avatar Winder says:

If these first 4 picks take then we just might have enough to make our defense much better since the backups we had last year will have more playing time in our system. I am glad the first 4 picks were defense. It just shows the FO saw what everyone else did.

Happy Birthday Chuck, just saw it on the flap. Happy to be apart of the 49ers forever site. It’s an important site and I beleive that there are those in the Niners org. that pass through regularly.

Happy Birthday Chuck. I’m one of several April babies in my family also. As my Dad was quick to say, April babies were are result of July vacations 😁

Given my surprise last night about the selection of Stout, I guess the suggestion is a need for the next K’waun. Let’s hope he fills the role.

Happy Birthday Unca. Time to drink a stout, like maybe a Guinness.

  6. bakkentom's avatar bakkentom says:

Shanalynch made their statement. 3-tech DT, LG , C are on the roster now. Hope like hell TW can do 17 games.

Nick Martin’s knee is fine, MCL with no surgery.

  7. Berger's avatar Berger says:

I wanted Kenneth Grant for our first pick. After much video review, I’m very happy with Mykel Williams. When Grant was gone, I wanted Tyliek Williams or Alfred Collins with our next pick. Williams was taken and we got Collins. So far, so good.

Next was Nick Martin the LB. Didn’t know anything about him. After reading up, an Oklahoma newspaper said they started losing when he had his knee injury. They never won without him. Sounds like Greenlaw in the Super Bowl. They said that QBs couldn’t run with him on the field. Again, sounds like Greenlaw. They also said he had 140 tackles in 2023. That made me pause. That is a lot of tackles. Then AK let me know about his combine, which tells me his knee should be OK. I love this pick.

We’ve struggled at the nickel recently. Maybe this Stout will be that. I was already bummed when Grant went at 99, a 5-8 CB didn’t help with my attitude, but we will see. One thing I’ve noticed with Lynch, he has done a great job at picking DBs in the middle rounds.

there are still a whole lot of good players left. I think today is my favorite draft day. I hope we can pick up the sac state center Slater. There is still a lot of good defense out there too.

  9. Winder's avatar Winder says:

Good chance we see a trade or two today.

    Happy Birthday Chuck 🍻🎉

I’m really getting excited about this draft so far, totally feeling much needed Defensive Juice! LB Nick Martin was OSU Captain the last 2 years the whole organization has nothing but praise for his clubhouse and leadership! This team also had a good LB in Danny Stutman (sp) who I thought was rated higher, but is more of a one trick pony and can’t cover receivers out of the back field well supposedly. Martin can..4.53 speed 37 Vertical,26 bench press at 225 and loves to HIT with high energy like this next guy..

    CB ..Upton Stout Western Kentucky

Yeah the knock on him will be his height 5’8 181 lbs but look what this frame did at the combines…4.44 forty ,Vertical Jump 37.5,1.51 10 yard split,10.8 Broad jump but the kicker is he Topped all DB’s at the combine with 21 bench reps at 225.. So yeah he puts the work in on his body, and he’s a seek heating middle like Martin! Even told Lynch on the phone “I’m pissed for greatness” and kept repeating “Let’s GO,Let’s GO ..Lynch said it was the best call he’s ever made hands down!!

  13. unca_chuck's avatar unca_chuck says:

Thanks, guys. Been fun hanging here with y’all over the years. Saw my first post was Sept 8, 2011!!!

Saw the 140 tackles for Martin. That gives me hope. Stout has a great name anyway. Sounds like a hitter.

  14. bakkentom's avatar bakkentom says:

we needed that trade or two yesterday. We need quality starters. Are totally unprepared to handle TW out of game.

Relying on backups Bartch, Zakelj, Hennessy to cover the intentionally bottom-bitched Oline to prevent our soon $50+ million franchise QB from being seriously injured. The last of the publicly mentioned OT worth a chance was gone at #99, Charles Grant.

We traded up for noone. 3-tech DT Darius Alexander and LT to be Grant were badly needed.

How come Shanalynch still have a job. Where is Jed York. Dream on but a lot of day 3 are backups. Hopefully we got three quality week 1 starters out of this draft.

Jesus. Your guy didn’t get picked so the sky is falling.

    New thread is up.

  16. alleykat69's avatar alleykat69 says:

I’m looking at OT/Guard Marcus Mbow Purdue 6’5 300 lib could move right into LG but also Tackle fill in.

  18. Winder's avatar Winder says:

I had a feeling we weren’t done on the Dline.

  19. Irish Kevin's avatar Irish Kevin says:

Are they only going to pick defense players?

  20. Irish Kevin's avatar Irish Kevin says:

I can’t image they think their Oline is set. That would be foolish

  21. bakkentom's avatar bakkentom says:

300 lbs and you expect him to anchor

  22. Winder's avatar Winder says:

At this point very few will be able to step right in and play especially on the Oline. Hopefully they have their players in line.

  23. Winder's avatar Winder says:

At least we are in the 5th rd and hopefully we can find another gem.

  24. Irish Kevin's avatar Irish Kevin says:

So this draft was all about the D, according to Niners Nation, Kyle/Lynch have never made the Oline a priority in the draft. I hope Brock is not running for his life on 3rd and long

  25. Irish Kevin's avatar Irish Kevin says:

Walsh drafted undersized linemen that could pass/run block. Granted players have gotten bigger and faster but you’re going to tell me you can find players who can do both. Oh that’s right we are talking about the Niners that prefer to run and only pass when necessary. So they look only for players that can run block. This has been the case way before Kyle/Lynch era. Think Alex Smith. Good strategy!!
