For draft day 2 I give the 49ers a solid B. The Niners traded up to 87 to get Ji’Ayir Brown. A highly rated guy who is a ball-hawking safety who can play deep or close to the line. He had 10 picks and 122 tackles his senior year at Penn State. Ferocious hitter who can cover. Like the pick.
A kicker? Hey, better than a throw-away RB. We need someone to replace Robbie Gould, and Moody is the most consistent guy in college, so there’s that. Robbie was also talking to Moody, according to Matt Maiocco:
Jake Moody says he’s been talking a lot with Robbie Gould, and Robbie just texted to him to congratulation him and tell him how great it is with the 49ers.
Here’s what Shanahan said about drafting a kicker. Really:
I still can’t believe we didn’t take a running back.”
He then said this in a more serious vein. I can live with it:
“You think you’re looking at there’s probably five to six teams who you feel need a kicker. So the whole debate is where to go get that guy, because it’s someone you need to get. And when you look at the history, the majority of kickers go in the fourth round. We didn’t have a fourth round pick. The guy was not going to be there in the fifth round.”
We needed a kicker. We got one. TE Cameron Latu? Good blocker, good route runner, decent enough. Maybe another Kittle in the rough. I expect today to be a lot of beef for the O line. Maybe a flier at CB.
Round 5, Pick 155
Round 5, Pick 173 (via MIA)
Round 6, Pick 216 (Compensatory)
Round 7, Pick 247
Round 7, Pick 253 (Compensatory)
Round 7, Pick 255 (Compensatory)
I’ll never forget drafting Jeff Chandler in the 4th rd. I think in 2002? When I read the scouting report I was a bit puzzled. He did not have a strong leg and wasn’t very accurate. Dennis and I had a field day with that. I remember writing that he doesn’t have a strong leg but, makes up for it by not being accurate.
I agree with Shanny. Third round was probably a little high to take him, but we don’t have a 4th and don’t pick for a while in the 5th. If they wanted this guy, this was the time to take him.
The scouting report says he doesn’t have strong leg, but he kicked a 58 yd FG in HS. I’m sure his leg is stronger now. He has proven to be very accurate and even clutch. It is a position of need. I like the pick.
I like the safety that we drafted. On film, he has great instincts. I’m glad his 40 was a bit slow or he would’ve gone late first or early 2nd.
Why did they bother adding FG kicker Zane Gonzalez ( a pick as well from Panthers) if they had no reason to keep him? Hey I would rather have Harbaugh’s boy Moody just seems strange how it turned out..
We played it safe since you never know what the draft brings.
Just like shanny said we got him at the end of comp in the 3rd rd. which is more like a 4th in reality.
I think the TE pick was a reach. They are gambling that he is an up and comer. He was converted from LB 2 yrs ago so he doesn’t have a lot of experience and he played very well at the end of this last year. I find it intriguing having a TE who has LB instincts. I don’t know what that gets you, but I doubt he will be shy about mixing it up in blocking situations.
I also like that he was a linebacker first. He just might be a hammer at the TE position. Also Kittle has got another year of wear and tear. Our first 3 picks were of need. I really like the Safety pick also everyone I have listened to compares him with Huff and that can only be a good thing. I am sold on the kicker now also a total need position.
So far we picked a couple of thumpers and a kicker.
Yeah, the Pat’s just traded up for a kicker at 112 so that is only like 14 spots after we took ours.
Eagles are just killing this draft with Jalen Carter,Nolan Smith,Steen,Brown,Ringo, and now getting RB D’Andre Swift in a trade! If he stays healthy the Eagles sure have plenty of firepower..
The Eagles got him for a song too.
Even Darrell Luter is a nice pick. He’s a press-man cover corner and that’s what we play. 4.46 40 time. Solid and physical.
Good solid pick with Darrel Luter Jr!
Has size 6’0 great speed 4.46 forty, teams started not throwing his direction as he gave up less then 50% completion against him..
OL are LB next please 🙏
You knew we were gonna have to pick an edge sooner or later. Looks like most of the meat and potatoes are gonna come from UDFA’s. Which i like just as much as the draft.
Well once again I never heard of anyone we drafted. That’s probably a good thing.
Are we finally done with the Trey Lance trade? I think all of the picks we gave up have been picked.
I hope we are but I lost track of what we really gave up so I really don’t know. Our track record of #1’s isn’t great but it still nice have one. For some reason i like that we went defense. Waiting to see the UDFA’s.
This is what I got so far, ufda’s
Avery Young, DB, Rutgers
Ilm Manning, OL, Hawaii
Jack Colletto, LB/FB, Oregon State
Joey Fisher, OL, Shepherd
Ronald Awatt, RB, UTEP
Shae Wyatt, WR, Tulane
we also picked up this RB from Marshall Khalan LaBorn. After looking at him I truly don’t understand why he wasn’t drafted.
Mel Kiper said we had the worse draft of any team this year. To me that means we had a really good draft.
This is a record for me. I only saw Kiper’s unfrozen head for 45 seconds on Friday.
new thread is up.
