Zakk Wylde Card Weekend ! ! !

This is the 2nd season (3rd? I don’t know) of the new only-one-team-gets-a-bye-and-14-teams-get-into-the-playoffs format. The Niners definitely needed it last season as our 6th seed was sealed on the last day of the last game. We turned that into a near-Super Bowl (damn you, Jaquiski Tartt!) appearance.

This year after once again early struggles were followed by a 10 game winning streak. This garnered us the 2nd seed. Still and all, we play the first game of the SIX Wild Card Weekend slate of games. We even get a Monday Night game.

Here they are in all their glory. All times Pacific:

Saturday, Jan. 14

  • (7) Seahawks at (2) 49ers (-10), 1:30 p.m. (Fox) – We should walk all over Seattle.
  • (5) Chargers at (4) Jaguars (+1.5), 5:15 p.m. (NBC) – Chargers should easily take the Jags. Well, maybe not easily, but win.

Sunday, Jan. 15

  • (7) Dolphins at (2) Bills (-10), 10:00 am (CBS) – Bills over the Fins. Even with the spread.
  • (6) Giants at (3) Vikings (-3), 1:30 p.m. (Fox) – Giants get past the Vikings late.
  • (6) Ravens at (3) Bengals (-6.5), 5:15 p.m. (NBC) – Bengals take the Ravens

Monday, Jan. 16

  • (5) Cowboys at (4) Buccaneers (+3), 5:15 p.m. (ABC/ESPN) Bucs beat the Boys

Dang, after 65 years, Mike Murphy is retiring from the Giants.

  2. unca_chuck says:

From the beginning in ’58. Crazy.

  3. alleykat69 says:

I don’t see the Chargers beating the Jaguars at all, they just lost one of their star WR’s Mike Crystal Williams for the game and that’s HUGE,because they’re idiot soon to be ex coach Brandon Staley decided to play him in a meaningless last season game with no affect on seeding and he now has a fracture in his back.Jags have been playing real well under Lawrence,Etienne,Kirk& the Defense along with Coach Pedersen doing a great on turning them around after the imbecile “Urban I’ll Lap Grind Weiner Man Meyer” made them the laughing stick of the NFL last year! Jags win 27-17..

  4. Berger says:

I saw that you guys covered this. I want to add. Jeff Beck was as good as any guitarist ever. He was 1 of 1. Probably the most difficult to copy of all time. Some have said they should rename the Whammy Bar, the jeff Beck Bar. Jimi Hendricks attributed him to learning to use feedback. Many great guitarists would say when he was in the room playing, they wanted to stop and watch because they were in awe. I saw his last performance. Here is a take from the show I was at. Johnny Depp came out for the last quarter or third of the show.

  5. Berger says:

One more. Jeff Beck is amazing. Nice jam with Stanley Clark on third song. Jeff even throws in a rift from ‘Third Stone from the Sun’, which was the first song I remember being my favorite song when I was a kid.

  6. unca_chuck says:

Wow. Didn’t realize his last show was local. Yeah, he was a true original.

    Loved the Loud hailer album.

  7. Winder says:

Here we are again. Go Niners!

  8. willedav says:

Finally stopped raining in south bay. Hope field is OK and conditions dry enough for real football/non weather game.

  9. Berger says:

I love this version of Peter Gunn.

  10. alleykat69 says:

Winder..Yeah great version of Peter Gunn !
Damm Jeff Beck was so awesome 👏 and playing with Jimmy Page also was incredible!
Nice pull a few threads back on Wishbone Ash Winder! King will Come, Blowin Free&Rock&Roll Widow just some of their fantastic work from a very underrated British Band from the 70’s till still now touring I believe? 2 Great guitarists in Andy Powell&Laurie M?? Saw them 1st time at Winterland in 75 with James Cotton Blues Band &Lynrd Skynrd such a great show by all !!

  11. Irish Kevin says:

Supposed to start raining around 2:30. So the Niners need to score a lot before the rain starts

  12. willedav says:

Still dry in south bay, dark and cloudy but no more rain.
Kat Idk about Lawrence he doesn’t impress me as being very accurate. Couple bad misses last week–that one in left end zone was JG esque, the type that would blow up Unc’s blog. Herbert I don’t think cares who he has for wideouts, he can find them. Plus Ekeler is very effective. Coach is doofus though, agreed.

  13. Irish Kevin says:

    Here we go

  14. alleykat69 says:

Yeah that was sweet! Purdy to CMC TD!!
Great drive CMC is such a great weapon to have!
OL opening up holes, Defense firing on all cylinders LET’S Gooooo!!!! Keep the pressure on!!

  15. Irish Kevin says:

WTH is going on with the D

  16. Lurker John says:

That vaunted, historic defense is getting its ass kicked and it doesn’t look like they have any answers.

  17. Lurker John says:

And Carroll is gushing again. That’s rarely a good sign for the other team.

  18. Irish Kevin says:

Is this game too big for Purdy? Some bad throws.

  19. Irish Kevin says:

And these announcers are definitely praising Seattle

  20. Irish Kevin says:

FG aren’t going to get a win

  21. Irish Kevin says:

    Ward, what were you thinking

  22. Lurker John says:

Incredibly stupid play. What the fuck was he thinking.

  23. Irish Kevin says:

The Niners are giving Seattle confidence

  24. Lurker John says:

I have a bad feeling about this game.

  25. alleykat69 says:

Stupid ASS penalty on Ward hitting the QB late!
Even more stupid was Shanahan calling for a squib kick with 9 seconds left WTF????
    Just bad clock management…

  26. 12th Man says:

Chants of Refs you suck here today

  27. Irish Kevin says:

I hope Ryans has made some adjustments to the D

  28. Irish Kevin says:

Who was supposed to be on Metcalf

  29. Irish Kevin says:

The D has not pressured Smith at all

  30. alleykat69 says:

That’s more like it, take the 2nd half kickoff and March down the field! Kittle,Deebo,CMC getting it done 13 plays 75 yards burning over 7 minutes!
Time for the Defense to step up and make a stop!
Had Walker3 on my fantasy team, Damm good back! But it’s Metcalf getting loose that’s not good after getting shutdown the last 2 times that’s bothersome..

  31. Irish Kevin says:

    Whew, we needed that!!

  32. Irish Kevin says:

The O is getting into a rhythm

  33. alleykat69 says:

Purdy Great improvise right there by Brock for a much needed TD to Mitchell and an ice in his veins 2 point conversion to Kittle!!
Read a stat where Purdy leads all QB’s with a 64% completion ratio for throws over 10 yards, now that’s a nice stat to own!!

  34. Irish Kevin says:

They should have two guys on Metcalf

  35. alleykat69 says:

Way to go Lenoir that’s stepping up jumping the route!
49ers really came out of halftime and showing fire 🔥

  36. Irish Kevin says:

No points scored in the second half by Seattle?

  37. Irish Kevin says:

Okay, offense and defense are playing like they should

  38. Irish Kevin says:

A gift TD to use up the clock.

  39. Winder says:

Amazing. At the beginning of the season we didn’t seem able to make adjustments but this whole 2nd half of the season we have been phenomenal at it. What a treat this game was. All the sweeter against Seattle.

  40. unca_chuck says:

Back from a friend’s house. Worried at the half with the stupid squib and the stupid penalty. D was unimpressive in the 1st half, but it all turned on Omenihu’s strip. 14 point swing there that got the defense going.

Mooney had a terrible game, and Seattle had their way with us running and throwing quick passes in the 1st half.

But, man my biggest knock early in the year was the inability to make 2nd half adjustments, and this team is now all about the 2nd half adjustments. DBs were all over the place today, but they came through in the end. Just hope Mooney Ward got his bad game out of his system.

  41. unca_chuck says:

Wow. 2 picks for Lawrence in the first 5 minutes.

  42. unca_chuck says:

    3 picks for Lawrence. Wow.

  43. unca_chuck says:

    4 picks!!!!!! Damn.

  44. alleykat69 says:

Geez I will eat crow believing Jaguars would beat Chargers! 24-0 and only getting worse.4 fucking interception by Lawrence he has turned into Nate Peterman
This could turn into Georgia destroying TCU in the college championship game 62-7??

  45. unca_chuck says:

Jax playing like they don’t belong.

    • PaulinAsia Banh Bao says:

Well, they don’t, really. Neither did the Titans, but someone had to “win” the AFC South….

  46. Barleyfreak says:

    First playoff start comparison:

    Trevor Lawrence, 1st man drafted
    4 interceptions

    Brock Purdy, last man drafted
    4 touchdowns

Sometimes there is real beauty in the world.

  47. unca_chuck says:

Jax playing like they woke up.

  48. unca_chuck says:

Bosa’s offside may have doomed the Chargers.

Now he gets an unsportsmanlike for yelling at the ref.

Chargers reeling outscored 20-3 in the 2nd half.

  49. unca_chuck says:

Both these teams trading stupid plays. Would like to see SD advance mainly because they have been so snake bit over the years.

If they choke away a 27 point lead, it’ll be the end of Staley.

  50. Berger says:

I don’t think Mooney was as bad as it looked. He got burned on a big one. To me, it looked like he was looking for a pick on a back shoulder throw. When the receiver is even, that is usually what comes. Seattle crossed him up. Outside of that play, he did OK. Yeah, he gave up some plays, but he took Metcalf single cover. That allowed us to roll assets to the other places. It’s why we go Mooney Ward. Metcalf did hurt us a bit but we completely neutralized Lockett, who usually hurts us.

    • Berger says:

I said that backwards, Mooney had a half a step, when he looked back, he lost that. He looked back because when the DB has a lead, the throw goes back shoulder. Of course, when he looked back, he lost his half step. They went against the norm and made a nice play.

  51. Berger says:

I don’t think we played terrible in the first half. I thought they played great. If not for Jimmy ward’s bonehead penalty, we have a lead at half, with them playing as well as they can.

Having said that, we were a little off, but we didn’t play terrible. In the second half, they couldn’t keep it up and we stepped it up.

  52. unca_chuck says:

    Joey Bosa coming unglued.

    • alleykat69 says:

BOSA helmet slam was on the edge of the field of play he should have been tossed out!
Maybe I don’t have to eat crow Jaguars are back in it and after that 2 point conversion only need a FG now for the lead and seal Staley fate as a HC!!

  53. Berger says:

I remember when we took a QB with the last pick in the draft, I thought, why? Lynch and Shanny said they drafted him because they thought he was a QB who has NFL ability.

When I saw him in the pre-season I thought, this kid has the ‘it’ factor.

Lance has more ability, but I have yet to see any ‘it’ factor from him. We are lucky to have Brock Purdy. I would guess he will be next year’s starter. For now, just win baby!

  54. unca_chuck says:

Unreal. Jax is gonna win after committing 5 turnovers in the 1st half!!

  55. unca_chuck says:

Jesus. The Chargers steal defeat from the jaws of victory. In the playoffs. Up 27-0. Given FIVE turnovers in the 1st half.

One offsides call on Joy Bosa loses the game for the Chargers.

  56. alleykat69 says:

Willied…Yeah never a doubt for the Jaguars LOL 😂
Blowing this game is the end for HC Brandon Staley!
Chargers are just a choke artist team!

  57. Irish Kevin says:

If you look at the last 2-3 games the Niners defense and offense has been very average at best, then the second half it’s as if they realize they need to play

  58. unca_chuck says:

    New thread is up.
