Seattle Slay – Week 15 – Playoffs?!?!?

This improbable season of weirdness continues with a trip to Seattle and the opportunity to clinch the NFC West. This seemed very unlikely as we stumbled out of the gate by losing our starting quarterback and losing to the 3-10 Bears, and the 3-10 Broncos. Both eliminated from the playoffs already. This team has even overcome losing their once and former leader Jimmy Garoppolo.

So, here we are with our 3rd string guy, the improbable Brock Purdy, taking the NFL by storm and taking no prisoners. Purdy is even coming of an oblique injury suffered early in his first start, against Tom Brady. So, the 22 year old is racking up quite the impressive resume in his rookie season. One that could rival Brady’s epic rise should things go even more improbable.

But let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves. As the NFC stands now, we are the 3 seed at 9-4. Win on Thursday and we are 10-4 with the West won. The only thing in play for the Niners would be getting the 2 seed from the Vikings at 10-3. We own the tiebreaker with them, for now, based on our better conference record, but it doesn’t change much as we would play either the Giants or the Redskins, uh, Generals, uh, Commanders in our 1st round game. Either one of those teams is eminently beatable, so the 2 or 3 seed isn’t a big worry. We can’t fall behind the Bucs, so we have a home game regardless. Dallas and TB is pretty much a lock as the 4th seed and the highest WC.

Which means, win this game, and treat the last 4 like preseason games. Give the 1st string offense a few series, and bring in the backups. Same with the defense. I sure didn’t see this coming when we were 3-4 and had just gotten shellacked by the Chiefs.

One more thing about this game, Seattle is out of the playoffs as of now.

A loss would really put them in a bad way to reach them. So they are fighting for their lives.

But they were in the same boat when the lost to Carolina at home last week so there’s that.

  2. unca_chuck says:

A cool story about Brock Purdy and his family is that, Brock’s dad bought the family tickets to a 49er game at the beginning of the season. He happened to pick the Tampa Bay game, mainly to see Brady but it just happened to work out to be Brock’s first start.

    Crazy.

  3. unca_chuck says:

Bad animation, terrible voice-overs. Stupid shit. Love these . . .

  4. Berger says:

I read Purdy’s scouting report from the draft. It said he struggles to get the ball out. I didn’t watch any of his college video but I can definitely say that he has fairly solid mechanics. His throws over the top, has a quick release and has good foot work. He is also a bit creative. he can go side arm if needed. I haven’t completely dissected his motion but I haven’t seen any blaring flaws. Either that scouting report is wrong or he has had some great coaching since college.

    • unca_chuck says:

His scouting report is pretty much Brady’s. Not athletic, slow delivery, slow of foot, yadda yadda yadda. Not sure about the coaching because Jimmy’s footwork has been awful his entire time here. But maybe that’s on Jimmy.

  5. Irish Kevin says:

Well has anyone heard that Brock is starting for sure, the Niners are so tight lipped with injuries. I hope he plays, if the Niners get a 21-0 lead at the half I say pull him. That way the backup, his name escapes my. Will get some reps.

    • alleykat69 says:

Irish Kevin…That would be the all time frequent flyer/bus mileage player Josh Johnson who’s been to more places then Johnny Cash..

Purdy is supposed to suit up and start according to Adam Schefter. Still if they get up big which I believe they will they should pull him and other starters! Don’t need a Navarro Bowman injury scenario in the 12th man house of horrors joint..

  6. unca_chuck says:

Per ‘league sources’ Purdy will start.

  7. unca_chuck says:

In honor of this game being in Seattle . . .

  8. Winder says:

Really looking forward to this one. Not only because I can watch it but I would love to see a 49er statement game and there is no better team to do it against. I would love to see us hammer these guys.

    • Winder says:

I am even starting Purdy in a couple of playoff games today. I got Dak and Trevor but don’t like the match ups.

  9. Irish Kevin says:

    Kittle

  10. Irish Kevin says:

    I want Mason used more

  11. unca_chuck says:

Yep. I would love to see Mason now. Great start by the D. And Purdy being Purdy.

  12. Winder says:

The refs are starting to fuck this game up

  13. unca_chuck says:

Getting killed by penalties. Clean 1st quarter now we’ve got 4.

  14. unca_chuck says:

We need w fucking TD here. The longer Seattle stay on the game, the more of a shot they think they have

  15. Winder says:

I guess every team but us can run on them

    • unca_chuck says:

They’ve got 9 guys in the box. They are daring us to throw.

I want Mason in there. Show them a different look, and try to get Kittle involved more more more.

  16. Irish Kevin says:

A few mistakes by Purdy, but I know he isn’t going to be perfect. Social media will rip him for that throw and Diggs missed the interception

  17. unca_chuck says:

Wow. I’ll take that. Greenlaw is really killing it this year. Despite the early dumb penalties.

  18. unca_chuck says:

This is a big test for Purdy. Hostile environment and some late mistakes in the 2nd quarter that he has to own and learn from.

  19. Irish Kevin says:

That’s the way you start the second half!!!

  20. Winder says:

And I think it was drawn up to do just that.

  21. Winder says:

That was a fucked up bullshit call

  22. Winder says:

The refs are doing it now.

  23. unca_chuck says:

Ryans is on glue if he thinks rushing 3 is a good idea.

  24. Irish Kevin says:

    Stupid refs!

  25. unca_chuck says:

Refs keeping Seattle in the game. That was terrible.

  26. Lurker John says:

That was a fucking unbelievably bullshit call on roughing the passer. What the fuck is this league coming to? Take a pick 6 off the board? Fuck you. That was a perfectly legal play.

  27. unca_chuck says:

The refs are out of control. Bosa was strangled and twisted down and gets called for illegal use of hands. What a fucking joke.

  28. Lurker John says:

I can’t remember ever seeing three flags on one play. They may well hand the game to Seattle.

  29. Lurker John says:

Seattle is desperate and they won’t stop slinging it all over the place. Ryans better come up with something.

  30. Lurker John says:

It’s four down territory from here on out. Don’t think they won’t take this 97 yard drive and put it in the end zone. Stupid challenge by Shanahan. Catch all the way.

  31. unca_chuck says:

Stupid call by Shanny here. Good move if he wants to give his defense a rest. They’ve been on the field for a while.

  32. Lurker John says:

No matter what this team always gives SF problems. Always.

  33. Lurker John says:

A rest? He’s going to lose a timeout he’ll probably need.

  34. unca_chuck says:

There you go. Give ’em a rest and they get the sack.

  35. Lurker John says:

Just take your sweet ass time getting the punt off. Niners doing everything in their power to let these assholes stay in the game.

  36. unca_chuck says:

No shit. Snap the fucking ball. You’d think teams would understand this shit and get plays off faster.

  37. unca_chuck says:

D once again is on fire.

  38. Irish Kevin says:

I love see the QB Smith yelling on the side lines, “where the F is my pass protection”?

  39. Irish Kevin says:

They need to bring in Mason, running up the middle is going to get someone hurt

  40. Irish Kevin says:

Field goal will put this away

  41. unca_chuck says:

Doing all we can to leave these guys in the game.

    I fucking hate playing Seattle.

  42. Winder says:

Ayuk needed to catch that ball.

  43. unca_chuck says:

All we need now is a stupid broken play that goes for 80 yards and a TD.

  44. Lurker John says:

Fucking Aiyuk. You want people to think you’re a big time receiver you’d better start making big time catches. What the fuck.

  45. Irish Kevin says:

    Still a 2 score game

  46. unca_chuck says:

Right on his hands. Can’t fucking drop that shit.

  47. Lurker John says:

And Gould misses. I fucking hate the Seahawks and their stupid fans.

  48. Lurker John says:

That was a perfect pass from Purdy. Inexcusable not catching it.

  49. Lurker John says:

That missed FG is going to be huge.

  50. unca_chuck says:

Fucking Gould. Fucking Aiyuk. Fucking refs. Just need to run the clock out.

  51. Lurker John says:

    Unbelievable.

  52. Irish Kevin says:

You never see Kyle do no huddle, I hope he learned something there

  53. Irish Kevin says:

Need 1st downs to finish this

  54. Irish Kevin says:

If Kyle just runs it here I will be pissed

  55. Lurker John says:

Fucking heads up play by the rookie.

  56. unca_chuck says:

Purdy I’m convinced is about 50 IQ points smarter than jimmy. He has so much more game awareness that Jimmy doesn’t have. His pocket presence is 100% better than Garoppolo.

  57. unca_chuck says:

Mason is fucking Frank Gore Jr.

  58. Irish Kevin says:

    A win

  59. Winder says:

What a game. It is never easy up there.

  60. Lurker John says:

I think we have something in Jordan. And I’ll take this ugly fucking win. Every game here is a chore but they won. NFC WEST CHAMPS!

  61. Irish Kevin says:

I am vindictive, I would have stuck it to Pete

  62. Lurker John says:

Yes, the kid is football savvy as hell. Lance is going to have to fight for his job next year.

  63. Lurker John says:

That dropped INT notwithstanding, the kid takes care of the ball. No turnovers for the Niners tonight. I still can’t believe they took that pick 6 off the board. Fuck NFL officials.

    • alleykat69 says:

I had 27-13 on Flavors blog that Mason run would of made it 28-13 if he scored, and yes fuck Pete and Seahawks,he would of went for it against us, we should of shoved it up their asses more and punched in a score!!

  64. unca_chuck says:

It’s a pretty basic passing game, but right now that’s all we need. As he gets more integrated, who knows? This was a fucking hairdo of a game that could have gone south.

Purdy handled it all very well. Especially knowing when to slide and stay in bounds on the 3rd down scramble to seal the game.

Kid is unreal at this point.

  65. Lurker John says:

The McCaffrey trade is looking pretty damn good right about now. Dude is a baller.

  66. unca_chuck says:

The 49ers have 2 of the greatest in-season trades in NFL history.

Fred Dean from the Chargers for draft picks in 1981 and the CMC trade.

They did use Mason late, but I’d really like to see him rotated in more early in games. He’s a beast getting through the line.

  67. barleyfreak says:

Great game. Amazing display, by our amazing defense. Worst past interference call I have seen all year, and coming after I called out to my wife that it would be a pick 6, and felt so stoked when it happened, pissed me off all the more. But in the end it didn’t matter. I do find myself tiring of hearing myself whine on shanahan while I’m watching and wondering where the hell Jordan Mason is, but hopefully, shanahan will not turtle up so much and use him. McCaffrey is a gem, and is oh so valuable. He needs to move Jason into the lineup more in my estimation for us to really be formidable. Garbage time is a bit too late moving forward, me thinks. Brock has really shown great presence. The game is not too fast, or too big. It is really great to see that he is not falling back into the Nick Mullens heave it up mindset. He’s playing smart. And savvy. He’s not the type that is going to win games by throwing deep balls. But if he continues to play smart, then we can and should, make a deep run. It’s good stuff. It feels oh so good, to beat an inferior team, that has given us such grief in their chamber of horrors. A Great game. I hope there are no lasting impactful injuries that came from it.

    • Berger says:

I was in Grass Valley about 6 months age. Did you ever stare that micro-brew restaurant? Next time I go thru, I’ll stop by. What is the name of the place?

      • Barleyfreak says:

Hey Berger. Yeah, it is in downtown Nevada City, just three miles from Grass Valley. Opened in 2014. Doing well. A lotta work. We have great food. Wood fired neopolitan style pizza. And of course, great beer. Ha! Link below to my beer. That’s a much younger me on the brew platform.

      • Berger says:

I just checked it out. I’ll be there in the Spring or Summer. The At The Edge Red and Bee Hive Honey Amber look really good!

  68. unca_chuck says:

Spot on. Halfway through the 2nd quarter I’m pleading with Shanahan to put Mason in. Just to change things up and give a different look. CMC was getting stopped a lot and a change of pace would help.

Purdy is flat amazing. One near-pick, but the rest was pretty solid. Like I said earlier, he has a much better awareness of his surroundings when in the pocket or on the move. And he’s smart.

Hate to say he’s like Joe, but the calm demeanor and the hint of swagger is there. Granted it’s 2.75 games, but winning in Seattle with all the bullshit that went on in this game it’s still a very tough win.

  69. Irish Kevin says:

Matt Maiocco and Carlos Ramirez say the Niners are better off with Purdy, rather than a healthy Lance or Jimmy. Yes they are

  70. alleykat69 says:

What a great signing was Charvirus Ward he has solidified a solid secondary this year! He was very physical against Metcalf last night frustrating him enough to get 1 personal foul and could have easily drawn a second one.In his face with great coverage is how u have to play against an imposing freak of nature like Metcalf who’s chiseled like a Greek god at 6’4 235lbs.Ward didn’t give a shit and was outstanding!

This secondary with Jimmy Ward,Hufanga who’s turning into an all-pro beast right in front of are eyes along with Moore & Lenoir turning it up a notch has me comparing some to the best secondary they ever had Lott,Wright,Williamson, and Hicks fondly known as “Dwight Hicks& the Hot Licks a great name for a ferocious secondary!!
Really this team has no weaknesses, just the injury bug, now that’s they have clinched ease back on some starters going forward.A heavy dose of Mason and I would like to see some Price as well activated and getting some carries as well..Nice to clinch in Seattle with all the grief they have caused over the years!

  71. Berger says:

Fun game to watch. Gold is a good kicker but it seems he has a problem hitting game clinching FGs unless it is at the very end of a game.

  72. unca_chuck says:

Yeah, he’s missed a couple that would have iced games and instead made them more dicey.

Barley, I’ll be sure to stop by. I have some friends in Grass Valley and would love to hit the place.

Yeah. Very weird how this season is turning out. Would Brock have beaten Denver and Atlanta? If Brock stepped in earlier instead of Jimmy, we might have 2 more wins.

But, Jimmy is certainly out. Depending on how far our playoff run goes, it’ll be nuts. But I’m imagining that it would be an open competition for the starting job.

    New thread is up.
