Halfway to Somewhere

Is the glass half full? Is the glass half empty? Is there whiskey in the glass? We have reached the midway point of the season at the middle of the glass. The good news for our 4-4 record is that we are only 1.5 games behind Seattle. Yeah, fucking Seattle. The team that won’t go away. Say what you will about their old coach, their shitty defense, and their journeyman quarterback, they are winning games and have the lead.

The good news is we are 3-0 in the division and already have a win against them. The other good news is that we are getting our playmakers back in Deebo, Elijah, and Juice to go along with the newly acquired Christian McCaffery. So, the glass appears to be half-full of some excellent 25 year old small-batch whiskey. A nice Angel’s Envy.

The not-so-good news? Well, it’s not really news, it’s more of a question as to how the drivers of this offense continue this season. The inconsistency of Jimmy and Kyle cannot be understated. Sure, some of this is due to the myriad injuries and backups all over the place, but the penalties, interceptions, fumbles, and self-inflicted mistakes has cost the team 3 games. The questionable play-calling down the stretch of close games is also a big concern. So, the glass may be half-full of Old Crow out of a plastic jug.

Me? I’m mildly optimistic that this team can get on a roll. Shanny has a new toy in CMC and we are getting healthier with this bye. Can we go 7-2 to finish the season? Sure. If the team doesn’t make dumb mistakes and play their usual inconsistent brand of football. There are NO scary teams in the NFL this season, except for Buffalo, and even KC. Stupid thing about KC is we were in that game late and should have been way ahead but for multiple failures in the red zone early.

Shit, even going 5-4 would likely keep the 49ers in the 7th spot, barring some other team getting hot. Playoffs shouldn’t be a big concern with this team. Playing consistent football week to week is. Our schedule is fairly tame, but it is the same for the rest of the league. Beat Seattle again, and the west should be ours.

Thew biggest stumbling block may very well turn out to be the Cardinals. A shitty team that has Shanny’s number much as we have McVay’s.

The reason I posted that link to Niner Nation is for the talk(not here) of trade Aiyuk. He is extremely reliable. Sure he makes mistakes but who doesn’t. Go Niners

  2. unca_chuck says:

I’ll repost it. Trade Aiyuk? Fuck that. I’d rather have him that ODB.

    I think this is great.

  4. unca_chuck says:

Man, you are digging up some real obscure bands. This sounds very early Airplane/Buffalo Springfield/Quicksilverish. Surprised this is from the 90s.

    Great stuff.

  5. unca_chuck says:

This band popped on on my spotify the other day. I had never heard to them. Apparently they all switch instruments during their shows. they all play everything.

    Super ultra prog rock.

  6. unca_chuck says:

Don’t know if you are grunge fans, but this is pretty much the show to go see you you could go back in time.

  7. Flavor says:

Damn! Finally I’ve found a blog where I can post all my thoughts and opinions about shit! I’ve been looking for a place like this my whole life….

  8. unca_chuck says:

Jesus. Jason Verrett tore his achilles yesterday. Thus ending his illustrious but injury-plagued career.

Man, Crystal Todd has nothing on this guy. Feel bad for him cuz he was awesome when healthy, but holy shit this should be the end-all.

      See Ya

    • alleykat69 says:

Yeah I told you all they should of been speed dialing the inept Colts on that Buckner deal for Kinlaw &Verrett just as Saturday was coming on board..Verrett sadly turned into Mr.Glass Samuel Jackson in Unbreakable..2Achillies injuries 2Torn ACL’s real shame he’s done..

  9. Winder says:

Just read that McVay is 11-1 against AZ. Goes to show the NFL truly is wacky. I feel lucky whenever we beat AZ.

  10. unca_chuck says:

Yep. Shanny beats McVay, McVay beats Kingsbury, Kingsbury beats Shanny.

Carroll fints in here somewhere, but those guys are like clockwork.

  11. Berger says:

Blanton’s! I used to by this whiskey for less than 60 bucks a bottle. Then John Wick drank it in the movie and I can’t even find it any more. I would love to have a half a glass of this stuff. I tried to copy and paste a picture of a bottle but it would not paste.

  12. Flavor says:

I’m really excited to see what Deebo/CMC/Kittle/Aiyuk do this Sunday. I can’t even imagine Shanny or Grappy fucking this up.

  13. unca_chuck says:

Yeah, I really think Shanny needs to find a guy who can call plays. He’s great at designing plays, but I really think he struggles with in-game adjustments. And look at the run game without McDaniels. Not nearly as effective as it has been. Injuries, line problems, yadda yadda yadda, but our run game is not as sharp as it was. Some of that is the Deebo plays are stale, but CMC should help this.

I don’t think Shanny will EVER admit he needs someone else calling plays. But really, with all these weapons, they HAVE to be more effective on offense.

Jimmy is Jimmy. He can fuck anything up. His inconsistency is the reason this team is all over the place. Granted, Shanny puts him into bad situations, but Jimmy continues to not be able to feel pressure, avoid strip sacks, or simply to throw the ball away.

Shanny routinely gets outscored in the 2nd half. This is the same goddamn problem Harbaugh had, and it drove me nuts. Super conservative with a small lead and they just run and throw short passes that force the players to break 3-4 tackles just to gain 5 yards. Playing not to lose usually results in losses.

    • Berger says:

I think the biggest problem this year has been our lousy O-line. Look how bad the Rams are with their lousy line. I think our line is improving a give coach Foerster a lot of credit for getting these guys to improve the way they have. Our other problem has been Jimmy G’s shoulder. He says it is starting to feel like it did pre-injury. Now our next biggest problem is trying to get the D-line healthy.

Frampton’s show back in ’77 with Skynyrd, Santana, and the Outlaws is one I’ll never forget. Definitely fun shit. I’ll have to listen to that Fingerprints album. Those Day on the Greens were amazing.

    • Winder says:

I think I was at the Framton and Fleetwood Mac one. I went to a few of em but I get them confused as to who was at each show.

      • unca_chuck says:

Yeah, between 1975 and 1982 I saw a bunch of those. The list of bands that played those is insane.

Biggest disappointments to me were the Stones (waited 3 HOURS for them to start) and they sounded like shit as it was the last show that was added to the end of their tour (Mick’s birthday), and Aerosmith. They were so fucked up they could barely stand. The crowd went from 60,000 to about 2,500 by the time they stopped. We stuck around and just laughed at them as they staggered around and mailed it in. Steven Tyler forgot the words to Train kept a’rollin. No encore iirc.

And the shows were 3 days apart!

This list is like a trip down memory lane. Last OD on the Green I saw was the Pink Floyd Momentary Lapse of Reason tour.

Not a big fan of Buffalo Trace. They are the distillers of Blanton’s but I haven’t tried that before. Pricey pricey stuff! Damn.

Angel’s Envy is a fave, and I recently discovered Russell’s Reserve. And Woodbridge is my standby. So many whiskies, so little time.

    • Berger says:

Thank you. Blanton’s is by far, my favorite. Just finished bottle of Russells about 3 months ago. Very smooth, could use a little more flavor. I’d buy it again. I heard good things about Four Roses. Haven’t tried it yet. I’m working on a bottle of Frey Ranch right now. It is local from Fallon NV. It takes me two or three months to go through a bottle these days. Ten years ago it took two days with some decent beer.

      • Winder says:

        Yep, priorities change.

      • unca_chuck says:

Heh heh. Yep. About 5 years ago I got back into drinking whiskey with the help of a friend who was strictly a Jack Daniels guy. I had to find better shit than that! Started going through bottles pretty quick but I’ve slowed down.

Angels’ Envy is really really good. Working on a bottle of Woodford now.

I thought Four Roses was a fortified wine. But I could be mistaken. Every once in a while I visit this site because it is funny as fuck.

I had my share of middle school and high school misadventures with the Mad Dog.

      • Berger says:

I love Woodfords. Great taste, a little burn. You’ve got me curious about Angel Envy. I’m going to try the bourbon. If you like Woodfords, you’d probably love Frey Ranch.

  16. unca_chuck says:

Yeah, I’m bourbon all the way. Not a rye fan. I’ll give Frey Ranch a try. I’m getting to the end of my Woodford. That Blanton’s is a bit out of my price range.

Might just have a little now.

    • Berger says:

I always paid less than 60 dollars per bottle. Now that it is so hard to find it is being sold for about 300 per bottle. Costco will have it for about a half a day a couple of times a year. If I ever find it at 60 bucks, I’ll buy at least 5 bottles.

  17. Winder says:

I was never a connoisseur of good whiskey but I always like the Canadian stuff the best.

    • Berger says:

Bourbon is a whiskey that requires it to be at least 51% corn. Technically, it needs to be from Bourbon County. Bourbon is made outside of the county, they just have to add a name like Tennesse to call it bourbon. Canadian whiskey is a blend of various whiskeys. There are some good Canadian whiskeys. When I drink a whiskey other than Bourbon, I usually go with an Irish whiskey. My favorite cheap whiskey, which is great for sitting on the table for everybody when camping is Evan Williams. Their Cherry Whiskey is tasty.
