I think we all know this, but Jimmy pretty much confirmed what we all know. I’ve given Grant Cohn a ton of shit (rightly, IMO) regarding his interactions with the team and some of the players he makes a living on ragging, but he was asking Jimmy G about the game last week and said:
COHN: After the game, you said it felt like 2017 again. You really were pushing the ball downfield in that game more than you had the past couple seasons. Is that something you want to do this season — push the ball downfield more?
GAROPPOLO: I love that, yeah. There’s a lot of things that go with that obviously, but yeah, I love doing that stuff. In ’17, there was a freedom, where me and the receivers and the tight ends, we had a good chemistry going. When you get that with offensive skill players and quarterback, it makes for a tough offense.
COHN: Do you feel you had that freedom last week just because you were coming off the bench or do you anticipate having it the rest of the season?
GAROPPOLO: I don’t know. That’s a fair question. I think we’ll see that as we go forward. The more freedom you have as a quarterback, you’ll play better, you’re more confident and good things will happen.
Pretty open about having to play in the system that Shanahan is pushing, which is run the ball and low-risk passes, little downfield action, and pretty much a snoozefest that results in little scoring in the 2nd half. As we all know all too well.
Granted, Garoppolo is rarely perfectly healthy like he is now, and he’s susceptible to bumps and bruises that throw him off pretty badly, so this will be a fluid situation. But, hey, if Jimmy can get Shanny to wrestle his foot off the motherfucking brakes and hit the gas, I’m all for it.
In honor of Marlon Mack . . .
one of the things I’ve had to get over is the anger i have for Lance possibly not being the guy worth 3 first round draft picks. But the reality is, this team can win NOW with JG and this defense. So, I am over it. If Trey never amounts to shit but JG wins this year i can live with that.
The fucked up thing is, we are gonna be halfway through Lance’s rookie deal with nothing to show for it. In the end that doesn’t mean shit, but what annoys me is I never heard the coaches, the front office, or anyone around the team say “We are gonna run a college RPO offense.” Fucking Shanahan himself said last year he wasn’t gonna use Lance as a runner even if our RBs are getting hurt.
All the talk was Lance taking the top off the defense with his big arm. No more dink and dunk offense.
Is the fact that Jimmy G is here change his mind? I don’t really think so, because the fact remains Lance has run the ball 54 times in 3+ games. Some are scrambles, but a lot of them aren’t. # 3 QB draws in the 1st quarter? Fuck that.
As far as Jimmy goes, he will have to be kept perfectly intact for that to happen. Our line is fairly iffy, esp up the middle so the potential is always there where he gets dinged up and becomes ineffective.
I like Brock Purdys better than Lance, so far. Lance looks lost and doesn’t have the ‘it’ factor. This Purdys kid really seems to have the ‘it ‘factor. I’d like to see him against some better competition to see if ‘it’ can prevail.
Methinks yer full of (sh)it.
Lance has played very little. And he’s done this year of course. And Shanahan seems intent on slowing his progress.
Fucking Eberflus outcoached shanny in game 1. He started slow with Fields and got more aggressive as the game went on. Shanny took a couple shots early and turtled up like he does.
The only reason Seattle didn’t come back is their offense is worse than the Bears.
The 49er offense was on the field for 12 minutes of the 3rd quarter and they scored 7 points. For the BEARS.
We ran 8 plays in the red zone on that 3rd quarter blocked FG drive. 6 runs including the fumble, a sack and a scramble. There’s your high-powered offense.
No wonder Jimmy is complaining.
I feel bad for you that you need to be so miserable. It’s good thing you like good music.
Whatevs, skippy.
Would you like to buy some peanut butter!
As much as some want to see Jordan Mason in a more expanded role besides ST, I truly believe Shanny will be using the vet Marlon Mack as his 2nd back hopefully on screens, wheel route, just a different look over a plodder like Wilson jr. Running out of RB’s early in the season sucks, so it’s Mack’s turn to see if he has anything left under the hood.Kittle I believe will be playing so that’s another weapon gladly back, but props to Dwelly also coming up big on that long TD play and bulldozing hard into the endzone!
LJ ..Yes it was Dunbar on drums thanks for clearing up my amnesia moment!
Wilson’s getting the bulk of the carries. I’m fine with that. As long as the line does their job, we shouldn’t have any problems with Denver.
And this game we WILL try to impose the run game. As always. As Jimmy said, he’d sure like to attack more. Like maybe in the 2nd half. As would about 10,000,000 fans.
Shanahan hasn’t met a lead he can’t fritter away.
Kittle is IN. Yay! Open up the playbook, Kyle.
For all the talk of Shanahan as the “great play caller,” that simply hasn’t been the case in the past couple of years. It’s pound it into the line, ad nauseum. The dude has a ton of top flight weapons now, especially with Kittle back in there, but Deebo, Aiyuk and even Danny Gray all have big play potential, but he just doesn’t put the ball in their hands enough. It really doesn’t make much sense.
And whatever happened to the play action fakes? That was a staple of his offense in 2019 and all the great running sets that up, but he just doesn’t seem to go there anymore. Juice said in an article earlier this week that that’s what he was setting up with Lance doing all the running, that at some point he’d be opening that up and was easing him into it. I’m paraphrasing, but that’s the gist of it.
Once teams start stacking the box, you HAVE to throw it. Don’t you? My hope is that with Jimmy now being as close to fully healthy as he has been in a few years, he’ll start to throw more on first and second down. What does he have to lose?
The Denver game is pretty big for an early season game, imo. Thinking RW is just going to continue to stink it up is a fool’s errand. He’s 17 and fucking 4 against the 49ers in his career. That’s just ridiculous. Don’t think he isn’t drooling right about now. He could turn their whole season around with a win, at home, get the fans off his ass and prove he’s worth the huge contract, all by sticking it to the 49ers one more time. Fuck that.
They have to come out aggressive, get up early, then start pounding the rock, a la Bill Walsh. The Broncos are going to be looking for the run, just like everyone else, so mix it up. Get up early so the D can start teeing off on these dudes. Play it safe and they’ll probably lose.
Berger, I like Purdy too. He has a beautiful delivery and throws a tight, accurate ball. He also moves well. Not like Lance, but he moves well enough, maybe kind of like Aaron Rodgers, slides around the pocket to give himself time and room to throw. We’ve seen him for a limited time, obviously, but he strikes me as having a good feel for the game, which I’m not sure is something that can be coached. He certainly didn’t look overwhelmed in the preseason.
I don’t know how any of that plays out long term, it probably doesn’t, but it’ll be interesting to watch his development. There’s a reason they kept him around when it looked like he had no shot at making the cut. You never know about guys. Back to Brady and the 6th round thing; you just never know.
All true. The unknown is that we haven’t seen him up against the ones. Because we gave up 3 first round picks, I am rooting for Lance to be the guy but what I’ve seen in Purdys makes me want to see more.
I really enjoyed that Procol Harum and the longer video with Trower. He’s 77 now and still getting it done. If that vid was from 2019, he was about 74. I love that, with all these classic rockers. Still doing what they love and doing it well. That’s how you live a long and fruitful life. I’ve got people all around me dropping like flies. A good friend from work got burned pretty significantly in a natural gas accident last week. Stuff like that never seems to happen to the assholes. I’m 61 now and if I’ve learned anything it’s that you never know what can happen, so more power to all those great musicians. Their music still makes me happy.
True to my word, Yessongs inbound from Amazon in a couple hours! Looking forward to adding that to my collection of Yes albums.
You guys getting tired of my rambling yet?! LOL GO NINERS!
I have that double album of Yessongs LJ and it’s fantastic, yeah I’m old school rock&roll at 66 now, nothing beats the 70’s-80’s awesome bands!
Saw Yes at the Cow Palace 1974 with Rick Wakefield just an incredible show!
Enjoy the album are CD? All the great songs are on it..
And Time for the 49ers to open it up more now that Jimmy has a full week of reps with the 1st team against a Broncos team with an overwhelmed coach making plenty of mistakes.Broncos have 25 penalties in 2 games many just stupid decisions are disorganized like no punt returner, burning a TO, no FG attempt as Hackett waited too long on a decision to go for it, and penalized 5 yards and they punted.. Yeah Wilson has owned us, no doubt , but that was in Seattle, new team screwed up, the 49ers will dominate imo..
Yep, it arrived a few hours ago. Loving it so far. Such a great live band!
I think the Niners can dominate this game too, Kat, they just need to go out and do it. That would put them at 2-1 and getting hot with the banged up Rams up next.
That’s a good tune. More is one PF album I don’t have. Thinking about picking it up…
Isn’t is pretty much just background music for the movie?
Which I haven’t seen?
Dark Side of the Moo is something I’ve looked for on vinyl forever. It lives online. Lots of songs that weren’t available on any US releases back in the day. I’m sure the vinyl is worth a lot.
If you have 45 minutes to kill . . .
There’s a used copy on ebay for $105.00
Pink Floyd is my favorite all time band and I have never seen this. Now, I want one! BTW, if any of you get the chance to see Breit Floyd, go seem them. Their sound is a great rep of the original. I see them every time they come to Reno.
Oops, that should say, Brit Floyd.
It’s kinda a no win for Niners QB’s both Jimmy and Lance need Olinemen that can pass block. Shanny wants to run the ball.
Man, 2 weeks into the season and I’m ready to throw the remote at the TV. I think I’ve seen ONE first down pass in 2 games, and that was the TD to Dwelley.
All this running and 4 out of the last 6 years we’ve lost our starting QB and starting RBs. The 49ers held the ball for 12 of the 15 minutes in the 3rd quarter last game. And scored 7 points. For Seattle.
Kye HAS to do more than this vanilla offense with the Deebo dive thrown in just to make me cringe even harder. You’d think Shanny was trying to kill the guys who make the team good.
I guess More is considered to be a soundtrack and it is out of print. I’m sure it can be had for less than $105 on Discogs if you’re patient enough to wait for the right deal.
Never mind, I see Chuck was referring to The Dark Side of the Moo. More can be had on Amazon for about 18 bucks.
I have More on vinyl and CD. I have almost every Pink Floyd album on vinyl and CD. I can’t believe I never heard of Dark Side of the Moo.
Yeah, Deebo is going to get hurt at some point if he keeps running him like this. Get him the ball in space where he can really do some damage. I want them to run too, but he seems to have almost abandoned the passing game in favor of just running the ball most of the time. That doesn’t sound like offensive genius to me.
Much as I dislike the bubble screens, I prefer them MUCH more to the inside dive plays.
Bergs, saw Brit Floyd 2 years in a row at the Warfield. Excellent excellent shows.
Saw Pink Floyd in 1987 Division Bell tour. My wife saw the 1977 Animals tour. I missed that one somehow.
I saw Animals, Division Bell and The Wall 3 times. I’ve seen Brit Floyd 4 times.
Just out of curiosity why is that the 49ers can have a top 5 rushing attack with this OL but then the same OL is considered shit in pass protection? Am I missing something that the same 5 guys up front mindset is they can fire off the ball on a run, but can’t level an opponent rushing the QB?
Don’t know if you’ve seen this, Bergs, but any footage (this is from ’66) with Syd Barrett at the height of his powers is an amazing treat.
That is amazing. Thanks
No, they weren’t psychedelic! LOL! Syd started the craze, but they would have never been the Pink Floyd we came to know if he stayed. Can you even begin to imagine Syd playing some of the all-time classic guitar leads that Gilmour threw down?
Pass blocking is much different than drive blocking. What bothers me is we never seem to have our blocking backs in position to block.
Dark Side of the Moo came out in 1973 I think. Done by someone who used their previous name (Screaming Abdabs) to get it produced. Very good quality, and I don’t know if Scream Thy Last Scream is on any other album. The other songs are rarities that were only released in England.
This doc I have never seen before, butRoger Waters mentions something I have heard other places in that he said that the people Syd was living with in early 1967 were spiking his coffee every morning with upwards of 2000 micrograms of LSD every morning, unknown to him, for what turned out to be 7-8 months. Don’t know how much of this is true, but there’s likely no one on earth who has gone through that before.
There is no way you wouldn’t know with that much acid. You build up a resistance with it pretty quickly if you do it everyday but still you would know. Usually you have to knock it off after about 3 days just to take a rest and bombard your system with vitamin B’s.
I think he was pretty lost in his mental health issues when this started happening so there’s no saying what went on in his head. But Syd deteriorated pretty fast between the 1st album and the 2nd.
Yeah, pretty sure whatever was going on with him the acid didn’t help.
Yeah, did a fair bit of it back in the day but never over more than a day. Doubling up would just be what, 28 hours of tripping? Shit, that would be pretty taxing on the brain cells.
The video where they were playing with Zappa, they are ALL tripping balls.
