OMFFFFFFFG! are you fucking serious?

Are you kidding me? Hard to spin this any other way other than the front office and coaching staff has little to no confidence in Trey Lance being the quarterback of the future. At least this season. In a move I never saw coming, the 49ers hedged their bet with the guy that cost them 3 draft choices by signing Jimmy Capocola to a one-year $6.5 million deal. Either that or they will cut him after the week 2 Seahawks game.

I can’t even believe Jimmy would agree to this other than to think the team said, you can fight for your starting spot. Which makes little sense as they aren’t gonna bail now. At least I hope they don’t. I guess this isn’t terrible thing as Sudfeld (bye) and Purty sure aren’t anything but greener than Trey, but still, after hearing for 2 years how the plan is on schedule, they pull this out from under the feet of the soon-to-be starter.

For all intents and purposes, Jimmy is a great guy who is all about the team, and the players have always rallied around him, but this sure seems odd that they but both these guys in a fucking weird position. One bad game and the clamor will start.

What this also brings up is the fact that Shanny will have no compunction running Lance all over the place since he has his backup ready to go.

Don’t like this move at all, but I guess it is worth $6.5 mill to keep Jimmy off the Seahawks.

This team borders on being a complete shit show on a regular basis. How this doesn’t torpedo Lance is beyond me. The media will jump all over it every time Lance has a hiccup. WTF.

  2. Lurker John says:

Maybe this is come kind of sign and trade deal. Do they do those in football?

    • Lurker John says:

Scrap the sign-and-trade, Garoppolo has a no-trade clause in this contract. The drama is strong with this team.

  3. Lurker John says:

Iggles release Tartt. Dollars to donuts the Niners sign him.

  4. Berger says:

I like the move. Our O-line sucks. I can see QB injuries in our future. Jimmy G is a winner. Let’s see if Lance is ready. It’s possible that no QB will ever be ready with our O-line. Shanny’s play calling will be tested.

  5. Winder says:

Lance is a very level headed QB and he knows he’s not going anywhere. I like the move also simply because it’s cost effective for us. What would have been a shit show is cutting him and having Seattle pick him up which they would have. This bullshit is mostly on Jimmy for waiting so long to have that shoulder surgery. So we probably have the best backup in the league now.

  6. Irish Kevin says:

Well this is what I was afraid of, now Kyle has a crutch he can lean on if Trey bombs for two or three games. Every former player on ESPN , NFL network etc says Trey just needs reps/game time. How is he going to get that if Kyle starts a see saw with him and JG. I will say this if Niner management thought the Niners should go to the SB this year they are delusional.

    • Winder says:

Yeah we will have to see how they are gonna work this. No one expects Lance to come out of the gate and be a Mahomes.

  7. unca_chuck says:

This team is definitely up there as far as being contenders. This defense can stop anyone. If the offense is even top 10, we should be well into the top 4 teams.

I’m sure they are saying the right things inside the building but it sure doesn’t seem to give Lance a vote of confidence two weeks before the season starts.

  8. Lurker John says:

I find it interesting that anyone would see this as a good move, but after considering it I think those points are valid. I do still tend to think that it undermines Lance, but I guess we’ll find out soon enough. I don’t know him or his makeup, so it may be no big deal at all, but it is going to set loose the media, who’ve been circling around this story like a flock of buzzards for months now. The whole thing has just been weird. What it can’t become is a distraction for the team, but I don’t see how it doesn’t.

I’m of the mind that the Bears game will be a better test for Lance and the Niners than most seem to think, first real game action as the starter and with the Fields angle thrown in as well. We get the final roster tomorrow, then I’m ready for the damn season to start. Can’t believe JG is back. lol

    • Winder says:

I agree, the media can really be a distraction and it’s usually a bunch of bullshit. That’s what happened with Kap and his protest. If the media is causing to much damage then I wouldn’t let em in.

    • unca_chuck says:

They should have pulled Grant Cohn’s credentials anyway.

  9. Barleyfreak says:

Well I’m super glad that Jimmy has been getting so many reps during the preseason. Oh, wait. He’s had, let’s see, carry the 1,… um, almost nearly,… none.

Yeah, chalk me up for a didn’t see this coming. I can only hope that Trey’s constitution is rock solid. Still I don’t think any of us were salivating over either Sudfeld or Purdy as the number one backup. At least it’s not going to be boring!

  10. Winder says:

i guess the smart thing to do is put Lance in front of a microphone and let him speak on the issue. Maybe have Jimmy there at the same time.

  11. joshuastnvk says:

Geez. I guess they told us this from the get go that they weren’t just gonna give Jimmy away for nothing, so kudos to them. We all just assumed that meant they would take a 7th rounded three years from now for the guy haha.

The only downfall is one bad game and you let the doubt in. Trey can’t struggle even a little or fans and the media will be calling for Jimmy. It would have been easier if Jimmy were gone because Trey gives us our best shot at winning over Sudelf and Purdy. Can that be said with Jimmy if he’s struggling??

I’m putting out my honest opinion and this could be me and straight to the point. I fucking hate Jimmy. Which is strange since the only stat I care about is W’s. I get that argument. I do. But this team is capable of so much more if they had a playmaker at the position. A guy that can make everyone around him better. And that’s not Jimmy. I don’t care if he’s a nice guy or a good sport or whatever argument people try and hold on to. We have Deebo, Aiyuk and Kittle and I’m tired of wasting their talent on a guy like Jimmy. I could be kicking myself getting better stats and points while we’re getting our ass handed to us every week and we fail to win games. But I want to win the last game. And as he showed us in ’19 and last year, he’s not gonna get us over that game. I’m sorry, and this news of keeping him just irks me with this fucking team. Shanny has to go. I’m sorry. But this staff is so ass backwards that they’re probably becoming the reason we don’t have 3 Super Bowls this decade.

    Happy Tuesday!

  12. unca_chuck says:

Well, this really reinforces the idiom ‘nut up or shut up’ for Trey. And for all of the screaming and yelling to come from this, it is actually a win-win. For the team anyway. Sure, Jimmy has a no-trade clause but all that means is he will have to sign off on anything that happens before next season begins. Beyond that, should Trey massively struggle, then hey we get one more year of wobbly passes and Jimmy’s consistently inconsistent play.

  13. Winder says:

To be honest I am not sure we win the division with the Oline we have. I can see all our RB’s and QB’s getting hammered. Do we save two spots on our PS for QB’s. I think I would.

  14. Winder says:

The Athletic’s Matt Barrows and Jeff Howe report Jimmy Garoppolo delayed his shoulder surgery this offseason to avoid being traded.
Garoppolo on Monday restructured his contract with the 49ers, becoming the NFL’s highest-paid backup behind the inexperienced Trey Lance. “The new deal still allows him to hit the free agency market in 2023, which has been Garoppolo’s focus all along,” Howe and Barrows said. “It’s the reason he had his shoulder repaired in March, which essentially scuttled any chance the team had of trading the quarterback.” Not having an offseason to learn a new system would make Garoppolo unappealing to any team that may have had interest in acquiring him in the spring or summer. It was a shrewd move, and one that keeps Garoppolo on the win-now San Francisco roster. It’s certainly not out of the realm of possibility that Jimmy G could supplant Lance as the team’s starter should Lance struggle this year.

  15. unca_chuck says:

Wow. That’s some crazy shit. Jimmy sabotaging his immediate future for the long run.

As far as the line goes, I don’t think it is as bad as shown vs the Texans. It was mainly backups for the most part. But I am still irked they didn’t keep Tomlinson. We should have done more this offseason to bolster that O line.

    • Winder says:

I agree, he was worth the money he got from the Jets. But I guess at that time we were still in cap hell.

  16. unca_chuck says:

Hmmmm. The Niners are cutting Jason Poe. He had a decent camp and looked green at times, but I guess they figure they can put him on the taxi squad.

Kind of a risk when we are so thin on the O line. Someone will grab him just to fuck with us.

    Can you say Seattle?

  17. Winder says:

We have already had 3 players we cut signed to other teams. LB Gemmel Bronco’s, TE Hudson( Giants always seem to pick up our te castoffs), and WR KeeSean Johnson, Atlanta. Most teams haven’t had any picked off yet. I saw a couple of teams with 2 picked and some with one.

    • Winder says:

I guess Seattle hasn’t had time to look yet. They are probably pissed about Jimmy.

      • unca_chuck says:

Yeah, I was a little surprised how much their fan base was looking to poach him. Geno Smith will not get them far. Unless their defense is lights-out.

        Which it ain’t.

  18. joshuastnvk says:

Jimmy Ward out the first four games, ouch.

It doesn’t hurt as badly as the decision to keep Jimmy Fucking G though lol
