How the West was Lost

Well, that sucked. We have become the team that can’t afford to make mistakes. And yet, we made mistakes. And lost. Jimmy G is proving to be a turd on ice as we know he can’t hit the long passes, and now he can’t hit the short passes. After the obligatory injury to Crystal Jimmy, Trey lance came in and underwhelmed. He did direct 2 TD drives. but missed passes, got them batted down, hurried shit, and basically looked like a guy who does not have a lot of game experience. Not so worried about Lance yet, as he has time to grow into the job. Albeit, he’s now on the front lines.

More galling to me is the inability of Shanahan and company to get people open. We have a lot of weapons in Aiyuk, Samuel, Kittle, and Sanu. Dwelley even, who scored our first TD. Our run game however is back to the scrap heap as once again we are down to practice squad guys and no-names. Yes, part of this is the trickle-down effect as teams know we aren’t running well, and this means they KNOW we will lean heavily on the short passing game. Sermon though had a pretty solid game with 89 yards on 13 carries.

Which means they play us close to the line and take away all the effectiveness of the misdirection runs, the jet sweeps, and anything within 10 yards of the line.

Still and all, for all the 3 and outs and general ineffectiveness, the game came down to the usual. No created turnovers, a pick by Jimmy G, and the horrendous double fumble of a punt by last week’s hero Trenton Cannon. Those 14 yard drives are real back breakers.

The defense played well enough to win,. Dee Ford had a couple sacks, but he also had a motherfucking retarded offsides penalty that negated a 3rd down stop and instead created a 3rd and 1 that Seattle converted. A la the 2018 AFC Championship game. There was another critical penalty on Fred Warner. A PI call that was utterly ridiculous as Warner briefly touched the WRs shoulder pad on a 3rd down incompletion. No impeding or slowing or anything. That of course gave Seattle 20 yards and a 1st down to keep the TD drive alive.

Back to the offense though. Shanahan amassed 457 yards to Seattle’s paltry 234, but the Niners were the ones down 2 scores in the 4th quarter. The first half saw the Niners marching up and down the field but getting no points but for the opening drive TD because our kicker got hurt playing hacky sack before the game, or some shit. Our punter came in and stunk up the joint, missing a FG and an extra point.

So, here we sit, 0-2 at home, and in last place. We had a chance to put a pretty decent sized nail in the Seahawks coffin, but we gagged badly. And to top it all off, Trent Williams came out of the game with a shoulder injury. Huzzah. Once again the team is reeling from injuries and ineffectiveness. Next comes Arizona, the buzzsaw that is currently chewing up the NFL. But hey, we are 2-0 on the road, so maybe we can pull this off.

In much better news the Giants look care of the NL West and won their 107th game to force the Dodgers into a one game WC play-in. Fuck yeah!!

Unless something drastic happens it’s already a maybe next year season. I still like Shanny and think he’s a good coach I just don’t think he’s a great one.

  2. alleykat69 says:

Something tells me there’s dissension among the players and coaching staff.Kittle’s become no existent along with Aiyuk puzzling usage RB’s? Mitchell jumped ahead of Sermon unfortunately got the shoulder stinger, Sermon’s 1st carry in nfl concussion, now back in with no viable options.

And wtf I believe Shanahan was caught off guard when Crystal said my calf has an owie and has to ramp up different plays for Trey..
Then there fucking Special Teams aren’t special at all!
Gould pulls up lame in pregame? Get rid of his ass! Same with Cannon bad enough to fumble then to try and get up and fumble it a second time? Go away!!

    • Winder says:

Yeah kat the mistakes killed us. We still don’t seem to be able to adjust on the fly like Seattle does.

  3. Cellar Dwellers says:

Maybe gramma will finally make me get a job. I’m only 42!!!!

  4. NJ49ER says:

Football is won and lost on the trenches.
ZB scheme is all about angles and misdirection.
If OL is getting defeated, as has been the case with Seattle for years, you’d think by now Shanny & Co would find a new wrinkle.
Pete blows us up repeatedly and we counter with meh.
Our tempo with Jimmeh is nowhere close to what it needs to be. He’s slow to pull the trigger, and often not accurate enough.

AZ runs at 110MPH. They’re getting after the QB too.
The week of prep for Trey with the one’s will tell us what, if anything, Shanny has up his sleeve, to play the mobile QB game.

Harbaugh used Kaep as a RB.
If Shanny follows that script and, doesn’t teach Trey to play from the pocket, he’s headed for the door IMO, or should be.

Our Defense will be the best option we have to get the win against the Cards.

If they don’t slow Murray, we’re going to be handed a 3 game losing streak, which further dampens morale.

  5. unca_chuck says:

That’s what really pissed me off. We looked just like Harbaugh with the 2 back sets and all the read-option bullshit. That is NOT the way to take advantage of Lance’s skills. Russell Wilson isn’t used that way and never really was.

And for the 9,000,000th time, why can’t we throw slants? Get the ball out fast and get a nice little chunk of yards. We have no quick reads or routes that get the ball out fast.

ALL of our routes from fucking Nolan to now are hooks, outs, and crossers. 6 fucking coaching staffs and no one knows how to diagram a go route. Fuck me sideways.

    • NJ49ER says:

My feelings exactly regarding the quick timing throws.
I put most of that on Jimmeh.
He’s not a quick twitch guy.
      Maybe, hopefully, Trey is.
Montana made a living in that area.
Best way to beat a pass rush is to get the ball out.

  6. unca_chuck says:

Tell ya one thing, it’ll be interesting to see how we do against the Rams. As bad as Carroll spanks Shanny, we have been kicking McVay’s ass for a while now.

Yeah, losing to AZ puts us squarely in the wildcard as we would be down to everyone in our division and 3 games out of first.

  7. unca_chuck says:

As soon as the NFL stops giving out stupid penalties for celebrations, now it’s taunting. A ridiculously subjective call that makes no sense as it is equal to drilling a guy in the head with your helmet.

PI is still a fucking major problem and they throw a penalty for a spike on the sidelines.

  8. unca_chuck says:

Actually it’s stupider. Unnecessary roughness, ie shot to the head, doesn’t get you an ejection after 2 like taunting would.

  9. NJ49ER says:

And Shanny is tauting the possibility that Jimmeh might start on Sunday.
What a charade…..Jimmeh already thought he was on a 2 week hiatus yesterday cause his calf hurt. C’mon Man.

AZ is licking their chops at the dysfunction machine we’ve become.
For all the competition in the NFC West, Kingsbury is giving Shanny fits just as Pete has.
Crossing my fingers that DeMeco can find some answers to catching their Crash Bandicoot QB Murray on Sunday.
I kinda hope Trey gets the start just to force some game experience on him.

  10. unca_chuck says:

Greenlaw was a big loss. He’s our roving speed LB.

Ryans needs to come up with more than our base defense pass rush. We are not getting enough consistent pressure and our ends routinely fly out of position to hold the edges. It happens all the time.

  11. Irish Kevin says:

If they are going to have Trey run, a lot? Then put Kittle, Deebo, Aiauk, and a 4th wide out on the line. There should be no way to double team more than one of those guys, if Trey can’t find an open receivers let him run then. But don’t put a running back behind him.

    • unca_chuck says:

This was my biggest problem with Harbaugh and his 2-3 back system with Kaepernick.

3 backs means 9 in the box. No room to move around. You clog the very lanes that would be open when you have 4-5 WRs spreading the field.

Different coaches, same issues. It is infuriating.

  12. unca_chuck says:

It’s not necessarily that they want Lance to run, it is providing lanes for him to run if the pass pro breaks down, or the WRs are covered. You know, how AZ, Seattle, and Buffalo play it.

They can have a few designed runs for him, but for the most part it comes generically off of broken plays.

  13. alleykat69 says:

Dallas LB Jaylon Smith shockingly released ..
With Dre Greenlaw out why not send out a flier?
Curious if something was going on behind closed doors with him.Something about not fitting into Quinn’s defensive schemes?
The kickoff returner/punt returner is back up for grabs as Nisibi Webster was just cut by the Bears who the 49ers cut, maybe bring him back since Cannon Sucks!!!

  14. alleykat69 says:

That’s crazy a 6th rd pick in 2023 for Stephon Gilmore? The Panthers are going on in,their Defense just got so much stronger!

    • NJ49ER says:

Gilmore is looking for a big payday.
We’ve got to plan for Bosa’s next contract at the very least.

  15. unca_chuck says:

    We should have done that.

  16. unca_chuck says:

    New thread is up.

  17. alleykat69 says:

Jimmy G been ruled out thank god so start the Lance era now.RB Elijah Mitchell will play Sunday which will help carry the load with Sermon. But it looks like Kittle will be out as the hits keep on coming!
