A Horse, a Horse, My Kingdom for a Horse

Now that most of the wheeling and dealing is done, the 49ers have come out smelling like a rose. You have t hand it to Paraage Marathe and the job he has done with the contracts. We have retained top slot corner K’Waun Williams, CB Jason Verrett, FB extraordinaire Kyle Juicechick, safety Jaquiski Tartt, blindside tackle Trent Williams, and DT DJ Jones.

They signed Ram DE Samson Ebukam and most importantly signed C Alex Mack from the Falcons. Center was a position of desperate need and though Mack is 35, he’s playing at a very high level. They also brought back Mohammed Sanu for shits and giggles.

The most important aspect of this is they restructured Dee Ford and Westie Richie’s contracts, and as of now they STILL have close to $20 million in cap space.

Call it a convergence of tight wallets and little money to throw around, but the Niners came out of free agency positioned about as well as a team could be positioned. They have leveraged their future on this upcoming draft, but that again is due to the front office’s drive to keep the pedal to the metal as this young team hopefully healthys up and makes a strong push for the Super Bowl.

Even still, they could gain a lot of draft capital (and cap space) back by trading Jimmy Garoppolo. There is still interest from the Patriots, so time will tell.

As far as who we pick on April 29th? Shit, I don’t know. I’m 90% sure Wilson will be gone so it falls to:

1. Justin Fields (fast, athletic, strong, tough – one-read wonder?)
2. Mac Jones (big arm, hits all the passes – fat, slow)
3. Trey Lance (big, strong, makes the throws, mobile – least polished, biggest project)

All have strong plusses and decent minusses, so let the debate begin.

I wish I had some knowledge about these guys to know what I am talking about but i don’t. I think being able to scramble and extend plays is a plus. But we had a QB that could do that and the league figured him out within 2 years(Kap). He had a Steller season for the Nevada Wolfpack but could never figure out defenses. Kap would have made both of those long throws that Wilson and Fields did on their pro days so I just don’t know.

  2. unca_chuck says:

That’s the thing about Fields, Winder. A lot of scouts put him as the 5th best of the 5. Despite his speed and athleticism. Even with Lance’s inexperience. Lance likely has the biggest upside, but that means he’s the least ready right now.

Jones very well could be the 2nd coming of Ben Roethlisberger, but he could also be the next Sam Darnold. It’s a huge risk, and they will get crucified one way or the other for whoever they get.

As I’ve said, my first gut feeling was that they would keep Jimmy and let Lance spend a year or 2 under Jimmy G. Still thinking that.

If they Draft Mac Jones I will do a Casey Jones high on cocaine driving that train off the rails!!!

I know this won’t happen but what if Shanny/Lynch shock us all ( of course they will be ridiculed and fired) and don’t draft a QB and instead take TE all world with his 4.4 speed and 83 inch wing span 6’6 Kyle Pitts. U team him with Kittle,Samuels,Aikuk, Mosert with a hopefully healthy Jimmy and that team would be scary. Then u draft Monds, for the backup role. Ok I’ll put down the crack pipe now..

  4. unca_chuck says:

I’m not crazy about Jones, but he certainly has an arm. They all have their highs and lows.

Wish we could somehow get Wilson. Maybe Shanny is hyping Jones to get the Jets off of Wilson

  5. NJ49er says:

Let’s hope Baalke & Meyer fuck it up from the jump.
    Alex and ARod 2.0?
I still have to think a pocket QB like Mac is the long term value.
Kaep never stayed put long enough to get the job done in the pocket and, Mahomes couldn’t survive when protection didn’t buy him time either.

Calmness, anticipation and accuracy separate the Montana’s and Brady’s and make Defenses sweat.
In the Draft, everything is hype.
Roll the dice and write the check.
Gimme the guy who wants to beat your ass on the field and enjoy doing it regardless of the game check.

  6. NJ49er says:

Irony’s irony is Pick 1 goes to JAX and Mac is a JAX native.
I’m not sold on Zack Wilson either.
Too much pretty boy for me.

Picks 82 & 199 are all you need to know about the NFL QB position.
It’s all about decision making and competition in the end.
Gimme the guy(s) who HATE to lose and, don’t accept less than 100% from everyone else.

  7. NJ49er says:

If QB IS the target at 3, I’m gonna go Mac or Lance.
    Tic,
    Toc…
    😀

  8. NJ49er says:

AK I entertained the same thing.
Pitts and Chase would be outstanding options but….
The QB is King in the end.
I’m not impressed with Jimmy’s competitiveness and durability to think he’s close enough to winning it all.

Need to think about the future QB and, whether that guy is who they see at 3?

  9. unca_chuck says:

Mahomes had a bad hip and foot, and his 2 starting tackles were out. This SB loss really isn’t reflective of his normal play or an indictment of their style of offense.

And as the NY Giants proved twice, Brady sucks under sustained pressure as well. This last Super Bowl was won despite him. He gets glowing reviews for all the wins, but he’s had some stinkers in these 10.

    This shouldn’t shape our decision.

    • NJ49er says:

Agree Chuck, my simple assessment is that decision making, accuracy and timing, are more valuable to me than a big arm and running ability.
Gimme the guy with a quick mind, and a quick trigger, over the guy with the best 40.

      Protect the QB
      Sack the QB
      😀

    • unca_chuck says:

Problem with that is Jones hasn’t faced an unrelenting pass rush yet. Fields is usually one and done. Wilson is the guy, while facing inferior opponents, at least reads his progressions when under pressure. Lance? Not enough on tape to really know.

  10. Irish Kevin says:

IMO, Niners need a mobile QB, and and an upgrade at O-line to pass block, with Mahomes and Russell a Wilson they both have had good O-lines that gives them time BEFORE they decide to run, scramble, whatever. So in training camp, Kyle needs to practice the pass, and emphasize pass protection. That does not mean when the regular season starts it is pass heavy. It means your O-line can pass and run block.

    • Winder says:

yeah, i read that earlier this morning, it makes a lot of sense. Just like a lot of gambling most of the time it’s wishful thinking to believe the card you want comes up next

  11. unca_chuck says:

Wilson in Seattle has had a shit O line for 3 years now. Seattle is negligent in their protecting him. Wilson is doing what he does mainly on his own. This is why they have been crapping out in the playoffs.

  12. Bustle Wilson says:

But Russ Wilson has slapped San Fran around like a pinñata since 2012. Those of you who still have your brain intact have a pretty selective memory.

  13. Unca chuck says:

How fucking stupid are you? What did I say, you fucking cum stain? Do you comprehend anything? Read it again you retarded bag of dicks.

God, the best part of you ran down your mama’s leg.

  14. alleykat69 says:

Darnold traded by the Jets to Panthers for in exchange for 2021 6th rd pick and 2022 2nd &4 th rd picks…Paves the way now for Zach Wilson with no looking over his shoulder at Darnold and I’m sure the Jets and Saleh just want to have a fresh start with they’re own pick instead of Darnold from the old regime. Really not a bad move for Carolina as well knowing they wouldn’t of got the QB they wanted at 8th pick and just not sold on Bridgewater obviously..
Niners have to take Fields!!! Lance maybe? Just doesn’t have the experience as much, more of a project and huge risk/ bust potential over Fields imo..
If they draft Jones which I’m praying is just a smoke screen by them, I will puke 🤮 he does not have the intangibles of the modern day mobile QB’s that’s who Shanny wants the most seeing how Mahomes can make the throws and moving around in the SB that Jimmy could never do..
