I tell ya, I’m a bit shocked. This isn’t a move that this team usually does. But with a stacked group of QBs, the Niners made their move by trading with the Dolphins. A team I picked only yesterday as a trade partner. We get the #3 pick in exchange for our 12th pick in this draft, our 1st round pick next year, and our 3rd round comp pick next year.
This of course will net us what looks to be Zac Wilson of BYU. Some mocks have the Jets taking Wilson, so that would net us Justin Fields. Whoever it is, it will be a huge risk for this team, but one they feel is necessary to get the team over the top. That being said, I don’t think the new guy gets much playing time, barring injuries, because the prudent thing to do would be to ease the new guy into the very complicated Shanahan offense.
Sure, this team still has holes to fill (slot WR? LB depth? OL depth?) but this is a bold statement that this team is in win-now mode.
Speaking of Wilson, there are reports that he’s a super-entitled rich boy (a la Johnny Manziel) who may shy away from the work needed to jump to the rigors of the NFL game. His uncle owns Jet Blue and there’s fear that he’s a flash in the pan. a 1-year wonder. Frankly, if we could get Fields, I’d be ecstatic, but i think either one will be better than Jimmy G, so here we go. This is either a bold gamble that pays off huge, or they just set the program back a few years.
We won’t likely know till 2023, but hey, at least they made things interesting.
chuck- I think we gave up our 2023 1st rd pick also. This move better pan out or we will be in trouble for quite awhile. I like that we are rolling the dice but it’s still a very big gamble.
Yeah we did Winder, a steep price to pay 💰
Miami must have Kevin Costner as GM
“I want all my 1st rd draft picks back plus
David Putney (special teams standout) cause I say so!”
Miami now has for this year and the future
2021..2 First rd picks!!
2022..2 First rd picks!!
2023..2 First rd picks!!
That’s some serious rebuilding power going forward with..
Don’t worry, Niner fans. I’ll be here posting the stupidest shit imaginable until I die a lonely death in Gramma’s basement.
Trey Lance is apparently on our radar as well. But, shit. If Fields is there, I’d be hard-pressed not to take him. The Jets are drooling all over Zach Wilson.
We’ve got to get some compensation for Jimmy.
Can’t let him walk for nothing.
This deal turns the top 5 upside down.
Atlanta is in WTF mode now.
They could grab a guy Bill might have on the radar like Mac at 15.
Like Jimmy in NE, Matty Ice is plug and play with Shanny.
Wow. Some arm strength on this kid. 50 yard pass on a dime moving left. That is a tough throw.
Yeah that throw was sick!
No way Saleh is going to help his old team and not take Zach Wilson..
yeah, that was a nice throw but you really can’t glean a whole lot from it. No pressure and pretty sure a Safety would have hammered hammered the WR.
From the atheletic
• Justin Fields, Ohio State: There was one chief concern about Wilson, his size, which he seemed to allay on Friday when he measured a little over 6-foot-2. That’s never been a worry about Fields, who is listed at 6-3, 228 pounds and who has rushed for nearly 900 yards and 15 touchdowns his last two seasons at Ohio State. Fields has a big arm and was nearly as accurate as Wilson, completing 70.2 percent of his throws in 2020, although he was not as efficient when his initial read broke down. He had a terrible outing against Northwestern on Dec. 19 in which he completed just 44.4 percent of his passes and threw two interceptions. But he bounced back with a six-touchdown, 78.6-percent completion game in a win over Lawrence and Clemson in the College Football Playoff semifinals.
In Fields, the 49ers would get a sturdier, bigger-armed quarterback than Garoppolo and also one who could put pressure on defenses with his feet. Fields also has worked under Shanahan — briefly — because he was part of the QB Collective passing camp in which Shanahan and others assist as instructors. He’s the only one of the top quarterbacks who hasn’t had his pro day. That will be held Tuesday.
test
Winder, not able to post? I see your test
Thanks Kevin got it.
I truly don’t care which QB we take. And, I don’t really care that it’s costing us dearly. Our FO just better know what they are doing.
Well I care Winder. You don’t move up to number 3 to draft Mac Jones who u probably could of got at 12..
Drafting Jones would be like selling your house and then buying a Prius!
Kat- I think he goes in the top 10.
I think if we get Wilson (ohpleasephplease) we will get rid of Jimmy G. Or even Fields. Lance looks to be the one that may need a year on the bench, but who knows? I’d like to see Jimmy stay anyway to give the guy a chance to gain his footing. Whoever it is.
Unless Bill throws the kitchen sink as us.
If Fields can do half of what Russell Wilson does for Seattle, I would take him.
A lot of websites have the Niners taking Mac Jones, why?
If the niners take Jones, then I don’t want any of what they are smoking. I don’t think they will though. I think it is Lance.
My first gut reaction was Lance. I’m leaning toward FIelds now. If the take Jones i will be seriously bummed.
I’m leaning toward Trey Lance now.The 49ers are looking for a very athletic MOBILE QB that can run the bootleg with his speed, very strong arm.Is he raw,?yes, but one year learning from both JimmyG and of course Shanny will have him up to speed quickly under this system. They don’t move up to number 3 unless they’re certain the player they want will be there. Then again if the Jets lose there minds and pass on Zach Wilson( yeah wishful thinking they give Darnold another chance and draft the best available non QB) that could change the 49ers thinking for sure. They’re in a great position.
And no freaking way they draft Mac Jones who’s only a pocket passer with no running skills , bootlegs etc just not a fit in Shanny’s schemes..
I’m good with Wilson, Fields or Jones. Jones is the most accurate thrower I have ever seen in college football. His decision making is unbelievable too. My only problem with Jones is I never saw him under pressure. That is a big deal. You want to see how a QB handles pressure. To make he looks like a future HOF QB if he can handle pressure. Tom Brady never handled pressure very well but he is considered the GOAT by most.
Lance s the one I have out. Everybody was trouncing ion Trubisky for inly playing one year. That never bothered me. Only one year in Division 2 does. Lance might have the biggest upside but he also has the biggest bust potential. When I think of him I think of Akili Smith. Boom or bust. I’m OK with that at #12 but not at #3. Especially after trading away 3 ones and a 3 to get the pick.
My opinion is the 49ers hope to get Wilson but it comes down to Fields or Jones. I think this years Alabama team was the best college team of all time. That does not happen without a QB who knows what he is doing. When analyzing Jones I could not find a flaw in his game and I have never seen better accuracy. My only concern is not being able to see him under pressure.
Right there with you Berger.
Mac isn’t mobile but, he keeps a play alive and, seems to anticipate and deliver with accuracy.
We’ll find out in a few weeks which guy they put all their chips in for.
His footwork in the pocket is nearly perfect. Plus he’s not a stiff, he moves well in the pocket. A little like Roethlisberger. Could he maintain that if he got hit a few times in the pros? Probably but that’s the problem with not seeing him have to handle pressure, we don’t know for sure. It’s called poise when evaluating and it hasn’t been tested.
We know Jimmy doesn’t anticipate much at all and, gets happy feet rather than climb the pocket.
Somewhere in the evaluation mix I simply look at the person.
Jimmy isn’t competitive enough or accurate enough for me by comparison.
Shanny and Lynch have made the move.
Hoping they’ll get it right.
Fields running a 4.4 40 is very eye catching!
Well, I’ll come clean. I don’t know sh*t about any of them other than reading what people who are not me are saying. But one quote sticks,
” Jones is as mobile as an angry snail.”
THAT scares me. The NFL has changed. Pass pressure speed has increased faster than pocket passers have evolved. Yeah, Brady just won another. But you just can’t be a statue unless you’ve got bad a** pass protection. When have we had that again? Maybe Fields is the one, but he’ll be the first OSU qb to kick A in the NFL if he does. Talk about 49er faithful. I gotta have some that Shanalynch know wtf they are doing here. Exciting stuff though.
That has been my biggest beef, pet peeve, whatever, management continues to believe in the run since the Nolan years and every year after that. The O-line is great at run blocking, but the minute the Niners need to pass the ball every QB they have had is running for their life or getting hurt. Sorry to say but unless it is Fields or some other mobile QB, we as fans are screwed
Well most of the local sports writers seem to think it is going to be Mr Jones. Don’t know why you would trade up for him, unless a team picking before #12 let it slip they were interested in him. Other than that scenario I don’t have a clue to Lynch and Kyle’s thinking
I’m OK with Fields or Jones. The problem with mobile QBs is they are great while they are mobile. A couple big hits and when they have to be pocket passers they aren’t so great any more. Or how about Mahomes having a foot injury in the SB and not being able to be a pocket passer. His team didn’t score one TD in the game. Tampa won the game with a running game and a pocket passer.
My opinion is the 49ers will take Fields. He showed against Clemson he can play in the pocket. He was hurt and had a great game. He was under pressure in that game and showed a lot of poise. If they end up taking Jones I trust they know what they are doing. I like both QBs.
My opinion of the press is they say what the other pressers say. There aren’t many of them who know what they are looking at and there are fewer that will say anything contrary to the popular rhetoric. Sport reporters are typically just bias gossipers. There are some good ones like Maiocco but he’s is an exception to most.
I think it’s gonna be Fields also. I truly think our FO knows what they are doing by risking so much future capitol.

Wasted trip if you ask me to see Mac Jones. Shanny/Lynch should of been at Justin Fields pro day instead and see a real athletic QB perform who can make all the throws and will be perfect in they’re system with that blinding speed(4.4) as well..
But that’s ok they are sitting great a #3 anyway, if the Jets take Wilson the 49ers get Fields are vice versa if the Jets take Fields they get Wilson..
Though I think Jets are locked in on Wilson and I’ll be thrilled with Fields..Think Fields is the pick they moved up for all along..
Jones wasn’t very impressive but it’s nothing close to real football. Fields worries me because of the one and done. You can’t see that in These types of drills. He handles pressure well though. They all have question marks. Unless Wilson falls to us I have no idea.
I had Lance as my initial gut feeling.
New thread.
