Game 16 – Injurypalooza is Officially Over

Coronamadeggon? If hindsight is 2020, I don’t want to look back. This travesty of a season fit snugly into this tragedy of a year. Too much to even think about, let alone document, so we’ll just let this season go.

Yes, this team has a ton of question marks for the future, but we have our closing game with the Beater against the Seahawks. Little hope for us in this one, but then again, I thought the same thing about last week’s game. Robert Saleh’s defense came up huge time and time again as we thwarted, for the time being, their playoff run.

Today? Of course we will be without Trent Williams and Brandon Ayuk, so there’s that. This one will be driven by the defense, but i don’t think we can hold Russell Wilson down for four quarters.

We will likely be somewhere around 10-12 in the draft after the loss. Is that good enough for a QB? The way the draft is shaking out, Trey Lance may be the only one available. Is he worth it? I’d tend to think we will go CB since we ignored it so badly last year, and it bit us in the ass with all the injuries, but we have a lot of time to work that out.

The only sure thing about Shanahan is never knowing the sure thing on draft day! Yeah only the Nick Bosa was an automatic choice under him.Still shaking my head of the Solomon Thomas bust pick, and how he has tried to make up for that one by continuing drafting DL men instead of obvious secondary needs are OL..

  2. unca_chuck says:

We have to be 2-90 on 3rd and 1 runs up the middle.

  3. Irish Kevin says:

Is drafting a QB in the first round a sure thing…no it is not, I don’t watch college but I do know some of the great QBs were not draft in the first round, so IMO they need an O-line that can pass protect, I think that way we will see what JG is capable of. I think the D will be okay next year if Bosa is healthy and they find someone to replace injury prone Ford.

  4. unca_chuck says:

Hyder did pretty damn well coming out of nowhere. We need O line, CB and QB help before we go D line. D looking good early with the pressure and hemming RW in.

  5. unca_chuck says:

I’ll say one thing early, BeatHard isn’t holding the ball as long. A little quicker getting the ball away and deciding to run.

  6. Irish Kevin says:

    Run heavy as usual

  7. Irish Kevin says:

Of course the D knows 3rd and long just go get the QB

  8. Irish Kevin says:

A mobile QB and an O-line that can pass protect and you get plays like that

  9. unca_chuck says:

Then again, he isn’t doing much either.

  10. Irish Kevin says:

104 to 29 yards of total yards,

  11. unca_chuck says:

Why don’t we move our QBs around? Try rolling them out once in a while? We are playing it way too safe.

    • Irish Kevin says:

Las game of the season, is Kyle afraid of Beathard getting hurt? Don’t know but if I was Kyle I would be calling some crazy plays just to mess with Seattle

  12. unca_chuck says:

Kyler Murray out with a leg injury. AZ is toast.

  13. unca_chuck says:

Cleveland makes it to the playoffs!

Looks like Hyder just got hurt.

  14. unca_chuck says:

Wow. We can’t throw downfield so this short shit isn;t gonna work.

  15. unca_chuck says:

    Hey! Rick James!

  16. unca_chuck says:

At least they took a shot.

  17. unca_chuck says:

Fuck Gould! Vizciano is money!! At 1/10th the price.

  18. unca_chuck says:

    Witherspoon bringing it again.

  19. unca_chuck says:

Oh my GOD! Kittle with the one hander.

  20. unca_chuck says:

The Beater has missed 2 easy TD throws.

  21. unca_chuck says:

    Defense is killing it.

  22. unca_chuck says:

Oh well. Just can’t let Wilson run like that,

  23. unca_chuck says:

Oh well. The Beater missed 2 TDs early. That cost them.

  24. Winder says:

    That should do it.

  25. Irish Kevin says:

2 mins to go and you don’t
    Know to protect the ball!!!!!

  26. Winder says:

If Seattle ever lost Wilson they would be in trouble

  27. unca_chuck says:

    3 fucking 4th quarter TDs. 6 and fucking 10.

  28. Winder says:

This season truly sucked. One good thing is this team doesn’t give the fuck up. We just make way to many mistakes.

  29. Winder says:

i don’t know if the Raider game results with effect us but by losing today we are back to the # 12 draft position

  30. Lurker John says:

Man, good competitiveness in this game against a team I hate, but something has to be done about the offensive line. I know the injuries are a thing, but there has to be some significant upgrades there despite the injuries.

QB? I’ve no confidence that JG will ever be anything more than a middle of the road player and certainly nowhere near a franchise quarterback. We saw one of those today, but he was wearing blue. But their draft position doesn’t seem to lend itself to bringing an impact guy in. What to do? You keep running a completely immobile QB out there with that OL and it’s just a matter of time before he gets hurt again. When Jimmy Garoppolo is your best option at QB, the position isn’t in very good shape to begin with. I still say they should exercise the clause in his contract and let him walk, but I’d be shocked if that happened. The Niners need a mobile, athletic QB with an actual shot at being one of the best in the league. Someone who can make all the throws and who sees the field correctly. I just don’t know if that guy will be there when they draft.

Even though Witherspoon actually acquitted himself well these past couple of games, he’s still shaky as hell. Sherman swears he’s gone and he’s pretty old anyway. Moseley is serviceable but definitely not frontline. They have to go after a top flight corner, preferably two of them. After two today, I believe Wilson ended up with 10 TD’s this year, impressive for a starter, even more so for a guy who didn’t play that much. RB would appear to be in pretty good shape.

A lot of guys coming back next year but Shanahan’s teams seem to be snakebit when it comes to injuries. Does anyone believe that this was a one-off year for injuries? I’m not so sure.

The good news is that the team refused to quit right up to the final whistle of the final game and that’s commendable and indicates the locker room is still in pretty good shape. But there’s so much that needs to be fixed. Until Shanahan gets a QB he can trust, his offense will always look like the bowl of vanilla ice cream we saw for most of this season. It’s painfully obvious he does not trust JG, not enough to fully open the play book.

    • Irish Kevin says:

Do you think if the O-line was better at pass protection Kyle would open up the play book? Also unfortunately IMO the Niners have been a run first team whether they have a QB who can pass or not. Look at A Smith, still playing, and when he has time he can pass the ball, down the field even. The O-line has always been the weak link in the passing game. We have seen JG make good passes when the pass protection holds up.

      • Lurker John says:

I think Kyle will always want to run the ball to set up the passing game, he makes no secret about that, but it seems obvious to me that he doesn’t trust the QB’s he has enough to throw the ball downfield very much at all. The crappy pass pro definitely plays into that, but so do the mediocre QB’s he has to work with.

When a team can run well and pass well they’re much harder to defend. We’ve all seen how devastating his zone blocking scheme can be when it’s working well. I’d run a lot too if I had a team that gashes defenses like the Niners did last year. Either way, that line has to be a lot better next year, especially in the passing game. How many strip sacks did we see this year? A ton, including today.

  31. unca_chuck says:

I think they are going to give Jimmy one more shot. Middle of the road or not, he got the team close to winning the Super Bowl. And healthy, this team is formidable with Aiyuk, Deebo, Kittle and Mostert. As we’ve seen with these other two guys, Jimmy is better than them by a long shot.

But I want them to get one of the top 4 QBs should Lance be available. Mainly because if they do draft a QB, they aren’t gonna install him from the get-go. We ain’t getting Wilson now as he’s likely the #2 QB picked. Hello Jets. Fields and Lawrence will be gone as well.

The defense should be lights-out next year if they can remain even a little bit healthy.

  32. alleykat69 says:

I’ve always have wondered why offensive lineman can’t be both great at run blocking and pass protection?I mean come-on man that’s your livelihood, Man Up and be great at both!!

  33. unca_chuck says:

I wouldn’t be surprised to see McGlinchey moved inside. He’s been a liability as a pass protector.

  34. alleykat69 says:

I would love Lance but even he might be off the board by 12..Jaguars &Jets automatic QB’s,Atlanta and Detroit might both decide to move on from Marty Ice&Stafford there’s your top 4QB’s ahead of 49ers and even an unsettled situation with the cowpokes and Dak and drafting 11 lots of crazy scenarios!
If those 4 are gone u have to draft cornerback 1st are the highest rated OL are that rock of a center Creed Humphrey.Richburgh better days are behind him along with injury history.Start with a beast at center that can make the OL calls as well for a decade.

  35. unca_chuck says:

Alex Smith is on to the playoffs!!

  36. unca_chuck says:

Yeah,, which is why I think we go CB.

  37. NJ49er says:

I’m also thinking that our Secondary has been exposed due to the loss of Bosa and a pass rush.
No doubt we need IOL help but, I don’t think we can spend a 1st Pick on a Center or OG.
Likely comes down to value and whether a pass rusher or CB is more highly graded.
Slim pickings at OT too in terms of quantity.

CBs are deep along with the potential shot at a highly rated DE from the looks of early grades..
Bosa coming off an ACL repair, and the likely loss of Hyder and Dee, have me thinking about an Edge guy if he lands on our slot.

Lot’s will change in terns of ratings before April arrives, especially whether we retain/restructure or remove Jimmy.
Need to find FA money and, Jimmy is sitting on a LOT of it.

Can Shanny live with a Josh? Rosen or Johnson? Likely gone are CJ and Nick.
Need to pay Trent to at least keep the blindside intact.
They’ve got no closer to an answer for the other 3 OLine positions eiher, despite all the attempts to mix and match.
I will expect to see a Center and a OG in the mix but likely not in RD1 unless they slide down.
Always prefer a pass rush to keep the heat off the Secondary too.

Senior Bowl at the end of the month, then the Combines in February.
Lot’s of evals to come before the picture gets more predictable.

  38. NJ49er says:

An early idea I’ve had is to see whether there’s enough depth at OT to steal a guy like Alex Leatherwood from ‘Bama on the cheap to replace McGlinchey.
There as some pretty good left OTs in the College ranks that won’t make it on the left side in the NFL.
McGlichey was one of those guys, (Lynch overpaid IMO) to spend that high of a pick on a RT when Minkah was there for the taking too. But….water under the bridge now.
He’s starting to show signs of being too light in the pants to handle power rushers, even on the right side.

Leatherwood is one guy I’m going to keep an eye on in terms of his ranking. Don’t think he’s a 1st RD talent but, he’s solid.
I see a lot of quality and depth on the OL coming out in April.

Hopefully Lynch and Co will get their Grades in order and, make smart selections to fill the holes.
Need an infusion of youth and Rookie Contracts to counter the current top heavy situation we find ourselves in.

  39. NJ49er says:

And, I’m not averse to Mac Jones from ‘Bama even though he’s not a mobile guy.
Is he worth the 12th Pick? Hard for me to say, but I love his size and decision making.
Has an arm to go deep and looks to be very accurate.
Give him some protection and I think he’s an NFL caliber QB.
Not to mention I like his Center Landon Dickerson so….why not?
    Ready made combo plate 😀

  40. Winder says:

Right now we sit at 12. I would almost put money on it now that we move back for more picks. We have so many needs that unless there’s a guy they can’t pass up we should just go for volume.

    • NJ49er says:

All about the slotting and grading process Winder.
Lynch should be getting better at this with time.
He and Shanny have blown more than a few Picks together.
I’ve always had a tough time with WR and QB slots because the bust rate is always high.
      We need volume for sure.
As always, I enjoy getting my head into the process to see how they attack it.

  41. NJ49er says:

I lean on Defense over Offense too.
Not sure we can expect Bosa to pick up where he left off, at least until the knee is tested and, isn’t a mental hurdle for him.
Ford was a wasted investment and Hyder might follow Saleh.
Gotta give Nick some additional support either way, via Draft or FA.
I’m gonna go with the higher rated player between DE and CB if I had to turn in a selection right now.
The kid I posted last night from Wake Forest, ‘Boogie Basham’ would be a great option IMO.
He’s likely nowhere close to Pick 12 but not sure at this point if he’s gonna make it beyond RD1.

  42. NJ49er says:

Looking over the FA list there a few good CBs that could be had as cheaper/younger options to Sherman too.
Assuming he leaves, Cleveland has 2 guys that could fit.
    Kevin Johnson and Terrance Mitchell.
We have to consider the cost of keeping K’Waun and Verrett too.

  43. NJ49er says:

Here’s the final Picks tally as I was able to locate –

    Round 1: No. 12 overall
    Round 2: No. 43 overall
    Round 4: No. 108 overall
    Round 5: No. 139 overall
Round 5: No. 157 overall (via Saints) * Kwon Alexander trade
    Round 6: No. 170 overall
Round 7: No. 194 overall (via Jets) * Jordan Willis trade
    Round 7: No. 204 overall

  44. NJ49er says:

Trask from FL could sneak into RD2? He’s a big kid with plenty of arm talent. Off the radar perhaps?

    • NJ49er says:

He’s also listed on the acceptance list for the Senior Bowl –

      • Winder says:

yeah, we should be drafting a QB every year or at least every other year. I still really like both Nick and CJ but they both have their shortcomings and in this league that won’t get you very far. I like that they are both very tough competitors.

    • alleykat69 says:

I think both Trask&Jones are second rd picks if the 49ers want to pull the trigger there.Trask probably the better option being there, and frankly he’s as good as Jones anyway imo..

  45. unca_chuck says:

I think a guy like Trask can be developed nicely with a couple years on the bench. At least one anyway.

    I’m not sold on Jones.

  46. NJ49er says:

Saw that we signed former Raider DB Obi Melifonwu –
His Brother is playing in the Senior Bowl – Coincidence?
    Ifeatu Melifonwu / 6’3″ – 213

  47. Winder says:

He hasn’t played since 2018, my guess is camp fodder unless he proves himself.

  48. 12th Man says:

I say keep Jimmy G another year and use the high pick on D Edge or CB. O line is 3rd for me.
Keep Rosen as back up and develop him as insurance for the almost inevitable Jimmy G injury. Rosen was rightfully a high pick who has had a shifty hand dealt to him to start his career.. Draft a qb late round to develop or sign the Beater to a cheap deal.

  49. barleyfreak says:

If we draft a QB, please, PLEASE, he better have more legs/speed than JG, The Beat, and Mullens. In this day and age, unless you are Brady, you HAVE to be able to escape the pocket. Our boys cannot.
