Short Week Blues + Here Today, Kwon Tomorrow

Here we go again. Forget the fact that Jimmy G was flt horrible against the Seahawks porous pass defense, it remains to be seen how bad George kittle’s injury is. His x-rays came back negative, but he’s getting an MRI today to determine what the issue is. Proily the dreaded high ankle sprain everyone on this team seems to have. He may be able to play through it, if anyone can, but we just have to wait for the results.

The game? The shootout that wasn’t, and almost came to be, and if not for a dumb call (or smart play depending on how you look at it) on the hit on Russell Wilson which drew a unsportsmanlike penalty, Wilson faked going into a slide for a split-second and when Jimmy Ward committed to the tackle, slid, drawing the foul. So, what would have been possibly a 45 yard FG, or a 4th and 2, gave the Hawks their final TD, putting the game out of reach.

No need to rehash the fuckedupness of the game, but the telling stat was the 49er offense gained ONE yard in the 3rd quarter while Seattle put up 17 points to get to a 30-7 lead at the start of the 4th quarter. Jimmy G was benched in favor of Nick Mullens, and he got the Niners somewhat into the game with 3 TDs, and if not for a 2 point conversion that missed by 6″, we would have been down one score at 30-22.

But, whatever. If anything, this gives the 49ers a chance to look at when Mullens can do in the immediate. Jimmy G is either too hurt on his ankle to play effectively, or has simply lost his mojo. Jimmy has played bad all season, even before the injury, so Mullens has to prove the Eagles game was an outlier. Sure, Seattle sagged their D by the 4th quarter, but Mullens hit passes DOWNFIELD. He threw passes hard and crisp. We at least looked like a competent offense when he was out there. Something Jimmy G hasn’t done for a long time.

Also, in a salary cap move, the 49ers cut their ties with Kwon Alexander. They traded him to the Saints for Kiko Alonzo and a conditional 5th round pick. Kwon had a solid year last year, around his pec injury, but has been a non-entity so far this season. And he’s hurting with an ankle injury. Alonso should fit right in as he’s already on the PUP list and won’t play this year.

Forget the 49ers chances of possibly making a playoff push.
It’s been reported Kittle has a fracture in his foot and Jimmy G will miss several games with his high ankle sprain. Both players are likely headed to IR and both could be done for the season!! Yeah the hits just keep oncoming as we’re back to the trick and pony show of Mullens &Beater in another long season of futility coming up…
Packers licking their chops for this Thursday Night revenge game from last year Conference Championship game..

  2. unca_chuck says:

Yeah, so much for negative x-rays. fuck. Like I said, we’d be better off forfeiting the rest of the year.

  3. unca_chuck says:

Fuck the Packers. They suck balls. Like the Bears and Rams, they are paper tigers. Our team is very much about the offense. Mullens needs to not shit the bed and we should be alright.

  4. unca_chuck says:

And Shanahan needs to understand when to go for the onsides kick. Because he fucked that up again yesterday. Giving Seattle the ball on the 50 with 5 minutes left was stupid beyond belief.

Kick it deep. Hold them in their end. Get the ball. Score. THEN go for the onsides kick with 1:30 left.

Shanny is using Garoppolo scared. He has zero trust in Jimmy G throwing downfield with any authority. It makes for a shitty game plan. With all the injuries to the run game, we can’t lean on that, so Seattle played everyone up close to the line. Much like the Singletary days when Aluminum Mike would tell teams, “we are running Gore 30 times today” and be baffled when there would be 10 guys on the line of scrimmage and the short passing game didn’t work.

Mullens can at least THROW a deep ball. That alone should be enough for defenses to wonder just a little if we can gop downfield. Been Gray is a shitty team that we can beat, even this undermanned.

  5. alleykat69 says:

Niners need to be Sellers Kwon was a start.
These 3 need to be gone next..Pettis, Witherspoon, and Coleman. They need more draft picks even if they’re just low rounders..
Too bad they just didn’t start tanking after the Dolphins game which left them at 2-3.Who knows 2-14 might have put them in the Trevor Lawrence sweepstakes and since they have a buyout option I believe on Jimmy G after this season I bet they would of done that and let Mullens handle the reigns till Lawrence was ready. Yeah just a wild dream now, but Lawrence like Herbert &Burrow are franchise QB’s sadly Jimmy no longer is and at 29 the best years are behind him imo..

AK I’m right there with you.
      Tank and evaluate.
      Need Picks
      Need to make Cap room.
      Jimmy back to Bill?
      How much you got Billy?

  6. Winder says:

I don’t have any expectations at the moment. It wouldn’t surprise me if we lost here on out. Time to focus on what we have and see who steps up.

  7. NJ49er says:

Wouldn’t shock me to see Lynch turn around and deal for Njoku now either.
    Tic

    Deadline is upon us.

  8. NJ49er says:

My 1st Draft crush for ’21…
    LB Joseph Ossai TX Longhorn
    6’4″ / 254
    He’s a Jr.
Hope he comes out and lands on our roster.
He’s a high motor game wrecker.

    • alleykat69 says:

NJ 49er Isn’t that kid Ossai from Nigeria? Maybe the the next Nigerian Nightmare!
Just took up football when he came to the states and said “I think I like this sport “
Yeah he’s got a high end motor that can lay some wood out on an opponent! I’m all in I watched him in the Longhorns game against Oklahoma St and he was making plays sideline to sideline

      • NJ49er says:

AK I watched the same game and he was EVERYWHERE.
        Coverage, sacks, tackles etc.
Yep, he’s on my list now.
Don’t know his background but if he’s new, he’s a prodigy.

  9. unca_chuck says:

Watching the lowly Giants play the Bucs, and the Giants on one drive took 2 deep shots. That’s more than we’ve taken the last 3 games.

    • NJ49er says:

How many of us have made the same observation Chuck?
Jimmy doesn’t, or can’t, throw deep.
Garcia went off on him too, and rightfully so.
You can’t negate pressure unless you Force them to respect the deep threat.
I’ve thrown in the towel on making anything of the remainder of the season.
Our Training staff needs some recruits.

      • NJ49er says:

There’s no chip or swagger to Jimmy.
We need some attitude at the QB position.
I’m pulling for Nick for that reason.
He seems devoted to putting in the work too.

Favre was always a thorn in the side of Holmgren but, Favre always played to win.
Nick carries the same sort of swagger IMO.

  10. unca_chuck says:

I’m willing to give Nick a proper shot. They are saying G is out for the rest of the season, so the point is now moot. BDN’s team for the time being.

Grumpy with 2 POTDs in a row.

  11. Irish Kevin says:

Kittle out for the year, broken bone in foot. I am not throwing in the towel on JG just yet. The O-line is so porous on pass protection that I cannot evaluate JG. A Smith comes to mind. Also because JG does not appear to be able to pass down the field Kyle still relies heavily on the run. How can a O-Line be so good at the run blocking and be so awful at pass protection. Watch other QB’s around the league they either have pass protection or the QB can scramble to make time for their receivers. Before JG tore up his knee, he was decent at scrambling, but now he is either scared to run or has been told not to.

  12. alleykat69 says:

You know what Irish Kevin I hate to admit it but I’m conceding Jimmy G is turning into the next Jim (Don’t call me Chris ) Everett with happy feet and is scared 😱 to throw deep and will just fall down now with any little contact.

  13. unca_chuck says:

Some of it is the QB behind the line. Jimmy locks up now when facing pressure.

At least Mullens gets the ball out fairly quick and doesn’t leave the line hanging. That being said, our blitz pickups have been flat awful.

  14. Qawon Alexander says:

At least Chuck’s wish of getting the backups to play on Thursday night football will finally come true…

  15. unca_chuck says:

Wow. You remembered. What a mensch.

  16. Irish Kevin says:

Steve Young does not think JG will be back next year, 1. JG has been hurt 2 out of 3 years. 2. Salary cap issues for the Niners

    • NJ49er says:

I too think Jimmy is not a long term answer Irish Kevin.
      Too indecisive for my taste.
Starting to buy into his limitations in the deep game.

  17. NJ49er says:

Couldn’t get anything for Pettis apparently.
    He’s been cut
    B.U.S.T.

  18. unca_chuck says:

Fuck. At this point keep the Beater and Mullens (start Mullens) and draft a QB next year. Luckily we have a team-friendly opt-out for Jimmy so there’s that.

McKinnon will be off the books and off the team. Coleman and Sherman as well. Unless he takes a team-friendly deal. All our corners (Williams, Verrett, ‘Spoon, Moseley) are free agents. I’d let Sherman go and sign the rest. Draft a CB early and late, and get an mid-level FA.

Pettis waived? 4 days too late. those turnovers were really the difference in the game. Jimmy’s INT came when we were in FG range at least, and they turned it into their first TD. Pettis’ monumental fuckup put them in TD range at the 20. 17 point swing there. Fuck.

Hurd better stay healthy next year. High hopes for him. This team is just too beat up. I think we can scheme our way past Green bay, but the better teams (Seattle, AZ, NO) will beat us. We’ll likely go 3-5 and end up at 7-9.

    • NJ49er says:

I’m seeing 2-6 the rest of the way myself Chuck – 6-10 final.
Why not? Get into the upper half of the Draft process. Gotta unload Cap baggage and retool anyway.

And there seems to be a lot of buzzards circling for Jimmy beyond us –
