“You Can Never Have Too Many D-linemen” – Kyle Shanahan

Shanny said this early in the free agency period, so does this tip his hand? Does this mean QWilliams? Sure, it could And it very well might. It could also mean trading out of the 2 and getting picks, and going for a guy like Montez Sweat. Someone a tick below Williams, but likely right up there as a player. Funny thing about the quote is, is, George Seifert said this very same thing in the late 80’s and early 90s when he drafted Ted Washington, Dana Stubblefield and Bryant Young among his 8 picks.

They all worked out pretty well, eh? Sure, we lost Washington before he excelled, but he knew how to get defensive line guys. Seifert’s approach was to have 8 or 9  linemen rotating in and out all game depending on situation to get better pressure and to keep guys fresh throughout the game.

We certainly have a lot of bodies, we picked up a couple guys, and we also have K Street coming off injury. And it looks very damn likely that we are going after QWilliams. This means a plethora of guys to rotate in and out I’d think. And, since we are going defense with such a high pick, the pressure is squarely on another George, Robert Saleh, our embattled defensive coordinator.

He’s the latest in a long line of guys that have tried to turn around a defense that has languished at the bottom of the league since the salad days of Vic Fangio. Call it turnover, age, injuries, or shitty drafting, the 49ers have been a bottom-feeder defensively since then despite all the drafts and moves to change our fortunes. As we all know, time will tell.

I’m nearly certain we take QWilliams now.

  1. Winder says:

If we do take Williams I wonder if they will try Thomas as a stand up OLB. I think I read somewhere that he might be better at getting pressure on the QB.

  2. unca_chuck says:

They need to do something with these guys. Move them around and find better spots for them.

Thomas rushing from the Will would be something to see. I’d think they could do that on 2nd/3rd down and long.

  3. alleykat69 says:

I’m sticking with Bosa, I want a freakin pass rush he and Ford can create which will help the secondary as well, which is well needed. They have a All Pro in my mind in Buckner, keeping pressure on up the middle, with a improving AA,and hopefully someone lights a fire 🔥 under Thomas’s ass should be enough

  4. NJ49er says:

No Bosa….too slow, too much hype for too little production.
Quinnen turned in a 4.83 at 303Lbs. Slim him down to 275 and move him around perhaps?
    Rashan Gary 4.58 at 277lbs.
Sweat is the freak of the bunch at 4.41/260lbs.
I’d go Allen over Bosa in a heart beat.
Bosa doesn’t go on my list at all. Not interested.

  11. rtfirefly says:

Nick Bosa’s 10 yd. split was 1.55, faster than Clowney and Von Miller for examples.

Methinks thee doth protest too much.

  12. Winder says:

I read that the Niners were interested in NE’s field goal kicker. Who eventually signed back up with NE. That must mean Gould’s not happy and probably doesn’t want to be here. That could be a problem.

    • rtfirefly says:

Gostkowski just signed with NE for two years. Shortest lived story of the offseason.

  13. unca_chuck says:

He’s franchised so he’s around one more year. After that, we’ll find some other guy. Kicker is low on the worry list!!

    • alleykat69 says:

      Unless they Stink!
One thing about Gould, he’s been Gold!
Kickers are not always a dime a dozen, just think Cody Parkey, who choked big time in the playoffs missing a chip shot off the uprights and hit 5 others are more during the regular season.

  14. unca_chuck says:

See the title of my thread!

Think we are all-in on QWilliams.

    • rtfirefly says:

If we are, it means kissing off two recent high 1st round picks. Base DLine would be Ford, Buck, and QW. Possibly we play Ford at SAM, then Buck, QW with ST at Bigend. Nickel would be Ford, Buck, QW, and rusher to be named later.

Guys like DJ Jones might get the odd snap here and there. AA and his contract would be SOL, with Thomas soon following him out the door. Not worth the money.

We’d almost have to use our 2nd rounder on an Edge. WR and the secondary would have to wait.

      Boo

  15. alleykat69 says:

    Bosa 1st pick Ohio St
WR 2nd pick Boykin Norte Dame
Strong combine, kid is moving up the draft boards..

  16. Baby Bosa says:

You’re all in on Williams until you’re all in on Bosa again. Or Josh Allen.

  17. NJ49er says:

Go bold – take the freak if we can’t sell out of slot 2 – Montez Sweat.

  18. unca_chuck says:

Wow. Skeevies has gone off the rails.

Didn’t realize I was so important to him. A whole thread dedicated to me.

Garsh. I’m so flattered, skipwad. Maybe someday I’ll return the favor.

    Not.

    • Skeeebbers says:

You should thank me for all of the attention I give you. Because nobody else is giving you much, especially when you talk to yourself here during games.

  19. unca_chuck says:

Actually NJ, that would be a pretty good deal if we could trade down and get Sweat. Thing is any one of those 5 guys would likely be a huge help.

    • NJ49er says:

Chuck I’m all about getting additional Picks with this slot.
World knows we and NYJ aren’t QB shopping.
No clue if Chucky will at 4 however.
Hoping someone wants to beat Chucky to a QB and makes us an offer.
NYG would be ideal for me also.
Like Sweat as the dark horse in this Class.
Heart stuff? Who knows but the team Drs at this point….
I’ve never bought into short-armed pass rushers, when every OT in the league has vines for arms, to control them.
Sweat has all the ‘numbers’. Whether he passes muster between the ears and all? Again, no one knows but the teams involved with his eval.

    • NJ49er says:

      33″ vs 35-3/4″ Alleykat.
I simply go with the longer arms and faster get off.
Agree about the ticker concerns but….that’s a Drs’ diagnosis in the end.
I can only crunch the numbers I’ve seen.
Lot’s of speculation to keep us busy in the meantime 😀

  20. NJ49er says:

I’m also willing to bet NYG aren’t desperate to give away Picks to do it.
I’d guess, since there were reports that they wanted DeFo in the OBJ talks, maybe AA could be in the mix to offer them some incentive?
    All about wait and see…..
QB Jones from Duke is a Cuttcliff disciple who just happens to be the Manning whisperer.
They can likely get him by waiting too.

    • NJ49er says:

Unless they’re serious about Haskins, and feel Chucky has interest, it’s impossible to predict how it plays out.
      Stay tuned…..

  21. NJ49er says:

I’m not putting a QB on our shopping list this year, for obvious reasons but….I’d like to see if Shanny has any interest in Minshew from WSU.
I think he’s got some moxie and, might be a player in this league.

  22. rtfirefly says:

Here’s an idea from “joecool” from the WZ:
Round 1 (2): Nick Bosa, DE, Ohio State
    Round 2 (36): Taylor Rapp, S, Washington
Round 3 (67): Terry McLaurin, WR, Ohio State

    Sign me up.

    • NJ49er says:

I agree with those 3 positions RT, in no particular order and no specific players.
      Tic toc……almost there.

      • NJ49er says:

Would prefer either of these guys as FS options – Rd2 or 3? Can’t say….

        Darnell Savage – Maryland – 5’11″/198 4.36 39.5″ Vert (182 Tkls/8 Ints) (7.03 3-Cone)
        Juan Thornhill – UVA – 6’0″/205 4.42 21 Reps 44″ Vert (208 Tkls/13 Ints)

  23. unca_chuck says:

Thanks once again for your exemplary draft work, NJ. Yeah, sounds about right RTF. These aren’t the Baalke days of throwing darts at draft picks.

You GOT to get out here for a game one of these days, NJ.

    • Winder says:

Yeah, thanks NJ I wouldn’t have heard of most of those guys.

      • NJ49er says:

Happy to share guys. The internet makes it more addicting than ever for me.
One 9er Fans’ obsession as it were 😀

  24. Winder says:

I still think you guys are under valuating the OL. We still have the same guys that let Jimmy get hammered last year and if Big Nick didn’t have such a quick release and short passing game he would have been hammered just like CJ. We need another OT and G.

  25. unca_chuck says:

We’ll likely deal with the line after the draft, when guys start getting waived.

Nice. I bet Skeevies and NoFear just jizzed themselves over this.

  27. BuhBuhBosa says:

I’m sure you’re thrilled that Bosa has to delete comments just to kiss the liberal left’s ass. It’s how it works around this lefty barnyard all the time. What’s wrong with standing behind our greatest president of all time and standing up to a cop hater like Kraperrnick? I’m proud of God fearing Americans like No Fear.

    • rtfirefly says:

Does NF still despise Muhammed Ali for sitting out Vietnam? Or does he respect him as a great champion?

    • unca_chuck says:

That’s Bosa’s call, skippy. Poor little snowflake doesn’t like it? Waaah! Why don’t I support the president? Because I’m not a communist sympathizer like you. Funny how the right has disavowed the constitution and the rule of law all in the name of helping the rich get richer.

He brings voting against your interests to a new high.

  28. Berger says:

Since we first stated blogging together on the SRPD and SF Gate about 10 or 12 years ago nobody has called out the importance of the D-line as much as me. Shanny has warmed my heart by saying you can never have enough D-linemen.

  29. NJ49er says:

I’d also go out on a limb and say this…If we don’t get this guy for Welker, Belichick will.
