Game Day Uno ! ! ! Prognosticate if you got ’em

Well, good bad or indifferent, the 2018 San Francisco 49er season starts! Expectations are all over the place. All the way from 7-9 also-rans to 11-5 playoff participants. I’m wavering around 9-7 and 10-6. Even with McKinnon gone, and a couple LBs hurt (and one suspended), I think we can hang with the Vikings on the road tomorrow.

Win? Well, that’s a different story. Much depends, in my mind, on our pass rush. I think as a whole, the team ha more depth on the lines, better defensive backs, more offensive weapons, and solid specials teams play. The big but is the pass rush. The good news is Arik Armstead is back, and he takes up a lot of the offensive line’s time. Enough so to give Solly Thomas and DF Buckner room to push upfield and the LBs time to fill.

Fred Warner will be starting for Reuben Foster, and Malcolm Smith is still searching for his first play as a 49er, so we get Dekoda Wat – nope- out with a bad hammy. Uh I guess we get Elijah Lee. That may spell trouble for our short passing game defense as the weak side LB usually handles coverage duties, and Cousins throws a lot of short shit.

Again, I’m not too worried about the offense. I think we can score. Even against this defense. And they are banged up as well. I just know if we can rattle Cousins early, we should be able to win going away. Mistakes and a couple picks kill Minn’s chances.

Niners 21 – Minn 13.

And we go 10-6 . . .

  1. Lurker John says:

    Another terrible fucking throw!

  2. Maggie says:

    4 missed TD passes?

  3. Winder says:

we have missed to many chances we need to clean that shit up

  4. Lurker John says:

“Cleaning that shit up” doesn’t begin to describe this mistake-filled disaster. And they’re still in it, unbelievably. JG can now stop reading his goddamn press clippings and living the high life and start playing some NFL football. Throwing off his back foot, constantly fluttering passes and terrible accuracy. That’s the shit that needs to be cleaned up.

  5. Lurker John says:

If Williams turns and plays the ball there, he has an easy pick. Still, the D got it done.

  6. 12th Man says:

    Good stop

  7. Lurker John says:

The Niners are now outgaining MN.

  8. 12th Man says:

    Up to the D now.

  9. 12th Man says:

Oh man hope he gets up, down to scrubs at LB

  10. 12th Man says:

Coyle looks out for at least this game

  11. 12th Man says:

    short

  12. 12th Man says:

    Jimmy G time

  13. 12th Man says:

    don’t jump

  14. 12th Man says:

    unreal

  15. Lurker John says:

Soly Thomas ices the game for MN. You fucking idiot.

  16. Winder says:

    That’s game

  17. alleykat69 says:

    What a dumbshit is Thomas!!!

  18. Lurker John says:

What an unbelievable moron. And he had one tackle for the game.

  19. unca_chuck says:

Jesus. Too many mistakes. Too many drops. As shitty as Jimmy G looked, the drops killed this game.

    • Lurker John says:

The two interceptions and the fumble didn’t help, missing a wide open Kittle for 6 didn’t help, Solly Thomas making the boneheaded play of the year in the first game didn’t help, and on and on…

  20. Lurker John says:

I can’t remember the last time an NFL player fell for that. Sit his fucking ass on bench.

  21. unca_chuck says:

We didn’t make the plays we had.

  22. alleykat69 says:

    So fucking stupid!
Every 49er should of been kneeling on the ground on that fake cadenced, no way were they running a play..

  23. 12th Man says:

    No fat lady yet

  24. unca_chuck says:

All of this and we still have a shot.

  25. Lurker John says:

And then MN goes three and out and stops the clock. Not too bright of them, either.

  26. Lurker John says:

Wow. This guy is a joke.

  27. 12th Man says:

    fat lady

  28. unca_chuck says:

Well, Jimmy G did kill this one in the end.

  29. Lurker John says:

This franchise may have been fleeced to the tune of $137 million. JG looks like ass.

  30. unca_chuck says:

    Triple coverage. Duh.

  31. alleykat69 says:

Shit might have to rename him Jimmy Grapickalo..

  32. Winder says:

what’s sad is that we coulda won this gamew

  33. unca_chuck says:

Yup. We are a young team and we flailed pretty badly when we had our shots. The pisser is Garcon shouldn’t drop that shit. He’s a vet.

  34. 12th Man says:

They moved the ball, had lots of chances and could of won, that’s pretty amazing. I don’t fault JG for trying too hard at the end. No way they were expected to win this one.
He is a gunslinger, live by the sword and die by the sword but they had a great chance, I see lots of good things to go with the bad.

  35. Lurker John says:

    Here’s your slash line, folks:

    15/33 for 261yds, a 7.9 avg, 1 TD, 3 INT, 3 sacks for 24 yds and a 45.1 rating.

That’s not bad, that’s, “I want my fucking money back.”

    • 12th Man says:

How about 4 missed TD by other players? Losing both the starting RG and the back up RG?
I think you’re being pretty hard on him. He made his share of mistakes but also made some great throws that should have been caught, he did enough that if a few other players did their part they could have won and he wouldn’t be throwing desperation stuff at the end.
      Big picture John.

      • Lurker John says:

Bad decisions, 12th, all game long and they led to three picks. 2 dropped TD’s that I recall, and one miss to a wide open Kittle in the 4th quarter that really would’ve given them a chance to win.

Big picture, yes, it’s hard in the heat of the game, I admit to that, but this dude had better turn it around fast. You’re making excuses for a guy that just secured a huge load of guaranteed money to perform. This is the NFL, not HS in Illinois. He needs to step it up next week, big time.

      • 12th Man says:

He needs to play better no doubt John, not his best performance, but 2 dropped end zone TD’s, a fumble on the 1 yd line and a wide open easy 6 for Kittle, as well as the injuries to vital players is more than “making excuses” IMO LJ. Those are valid reasons.

  36. Irish Kevin says:

Let’s not put Jimmy in with all the crappy QB’s they have had over the last 7-10 years. I will take his abilities every Sunday. This was a mistake filled game, as well as a injury filled games

  37. unca_chuck says:

Being in the game till the end against the No1 NFL defense is something anyway.

  38. alleykat69 says:

    Agree 12th,
Fumble on the goaline, Kittle drooped 6 on the run 🏃🏼‍♀️ 2 scores right there, dumb penalty, clean this shit up and they will be ok,Like the pressure on Cousins, including sacks , a good early sign..

    • 12th Man says:

I’m with you Kat, to win this one would have been unbelievable against that team in their house, and they had a shot at it. I’m expecting some of those mistakes to get fixed and a more cohesive team as the year unfolds.

    • Lurker John says:

Kittle “dropped” a ball that was directly over his head and thrown too far towards the sidleline. Yeah, “catchable” by the very edge of NFL standards, but not a good enough throw to a wide open receiver. In the 4th quarter, he then proceeded to sail a pass high to the same guy, who was wide open again.

      • unca_chuck says:

I disagree,, LJ. The ball hit his closed hands. Our fullback makes that catch in his sleep. He’s a goddamn pas catcher. Catch the pass.

      • 12th Man says:

Disagree on both counts, other than the pass was high to Kittle in the EZ, it still went through his hands. Could he have placed a better ball? Of course, but Kittle could have caught both.

In any event, I’m not as down on him as you are. I saw a number of throws last year that were risky and could have been picks too but they went his way. He reminds me of Favre in the risk/reward department.

  39. unca_chuck says:

Again, this is the No.1 NFL defense, LJ. And we were in the game till the end. Those drops loom huge. One of the drops was a 14 point swing that would have kept one pick from happening, and then the last one wouldn’t happen. I know, woulda coulda shoulda, but the drops and the fumble were the killers.

    • Lurker John says:

Credit to the team for battling to the end, that is a good sign, and to the defense for making stops in the 4th quarter when they needed them, even though they were terribly inconsistent in the middle part of the game. A lot of blown coverages and missed tackles, almost all of which led to first downs. I know you saw those, Chuck.

The drops sucked, they always do. Garcon probably makes his catch 9 times out of 10, even though he was hit. Pettis needs to learn what Rice had mastered, go up and get the ball, don’t wait for it to come to you. He preached that for years. And the fumble. WTF. 3 running plays right up the gut. C’mon, Kyle. First and goal at the 2.

  40. 12th Man says:

What will be interesting is how does JG handle losing and throwing those picks? I think all 3 were on him despite the WR falling down. Will he become gun-shy and take no risks like Kap did in AZ and all the games that followed that one? We will see what he is made of next week. I’m going to that one and hopefully they bounce back and get into the W column at home.

  41. unca_chuck says:

Yeah, the run game was not so hot, but this was not a slouch team, and we lost 2 RGs. Pss pro will be important.

I’m more worried about the drops. That dogged Kittle last year. Need to get Goodwin right as well.

    • Lurker John says:

They had their moments running, Morris early and Breida later, in the 2nd half.

    • Lurker John says:

Kittle had a great game, by far their best receiver. If a tough catch like that is going to be called a drop, then I can live with that. It’s obvious what a weapon he can be. LB’s cannot cover him.

      • 12th Man says:

I liked Kittle and Pettis, both made mistakes but clearly are talented, should get better over time.

      • Lurker John says:

Pettis looked a little dazzled to me in the first half, which is perfectly understandable. Once he made that first long catch he looked a lot better. Remember, he also muffed a punt that we recovered, luckily. He had a nice punt return later.

I think he should be fine moving forward, but he needs to assert himself out there. Kittle is Kittle. I’ve been saying since last year that he could end up one of the best receiving TE’s in the league.

    • 12th Man says:

All in all a mixed bag that left me feeling hopeful for next week Chuck.

  42. unca_chuck says:

Yeah, hard to swallow when you could have won on the road against a very good team. We had a lot of games like this last year. I just hope history doesn’t repeat itself.

I don’t think it will, but these self-inflicted wounds are the worst.

  43. Lurker John says:

Detroit at home next week, so that one lines up as a game they should win. I would expect a drastically better performance in terms of mistakes.

  44. Lurker John says:

    Well, the Seahawks lost.

  45. unca_chuck says:

AZ and Seattle lost. And for the kicker, Dallas is going down. Just got to hope the Raiders can somehow beat the Rams.

  46. unca_chuck says:

Dumb as it was, we actually played a clean game penalty wise. That’s something. If you didn’r see, Pittsburgh tied Cleveland despite 5 turnovers. We made too many mistakes to win, but we still had a shot. We are a young team that will hopefully grow from this.

  47. unca_chuck says:

Shit. Da Bearsss look pretty good early. 11 play drive for the TD.

  48. unca_chuck says:

Goddamn Bears catch everything in sight.

  49. alleykat69 says:

Bears putting a early whoop ass on the Pack..

  50. Lurker John says:

17-0 Bears in the first half, Khalil Mack with a pick-6 and Aaron Rodgers is out. The worst kind of nightmare for Packers fans.

  51. unca_chuck says:

Rodgers is back trying to will the Pack back into the game.

  52. unca_chuck says:

Shit pass into double coverage though. 20-3, da Bearssssss.

  53. rtfirefly says:

I called 27-19 and it turned out 24-16.
Nothing to see here, move along. Detroit at home next week.

  54. unca_chuck says:

Jeeebus. Da Bears are hell-bent on giving this game back to the Pack.

As much as I hate the Packers, fucking Rodgers makes plays. He’s been getting hit all night and still stands in there on one lag and throws a 50 yard strike for the TD. They may not win this game, but it won’t be because of Aaron.

  55. unca_chuck says:

Then again, da Bears are flailing..

  56. unca_chuck says:

Time to see if Trubiscuit can close out a game.

  57. unca_chuck says:

Holy shit. Fuller ha the easiest pick to make and drops it. The next play the Pack scores. Unreal. This would be a feather for Trubiscuit. Or a fail of epic proportions.

  58. rtfirefly says:

    LOL

  59. Maggie says:

How does a play like that last TD happen?

  60. Lurker John says:

Epic choke job by da Bears.

  61. Lurker John says:

Didn’t see the LATE flag. WTH was Matthews thinking.

  62. unca_chuck says:

    Da Bearsss get new life!

  63. unca_chuck says:

For the life of me, and we saw a shitload of it with Alex Smith, why do wideouts turn their back of the QB when he breaks contain or plays break down?

  64. Lurker John says:

And they choke anyway. At least the Niners didn’t do this. Wow.

  65. Maggie says:

Geezus these announcers slobbering over Rodgers is annoying as hell.

  66. Winder says:

    I can’t stand the Packers.

  67. unca_chuck says:

    New thread is up . . . .
