Game Day! Revenge of the Jed(i) . . .

Here we go with the 2017 season. A new regime,  a team that has very few holdovers from the last season, a new coaching staff, and a surprisingly quiet front office. A front office I sure hope has learned their lesson in how to run a team and stay in the background and let the coaches coach and the players play while they shut the fuck up and write the checks.

Anyhow, our 6 game opening day win streak is on the line against the Carolina Panthers. A team Colin Kaepernick beat in their house in the distant past of of the 2013 season. 23-10 on our way to a disappointing loss to Seattle.  Eons ago. Cam Newton after that loss, fell out of the playoffs before their 15-1 season and subsequent Super Bowl L loss. Last year of course they cratered again and Newton seems to be at a crossroads yet again in his career. Their defense went south, even with Luke Kuechly. Without him, they got worse.

Now? Shit, I don’t know. I’m fairly optimistic and I’m thinking we keep the streak alive. And I think we go 9-7. Expectations are small and I think if we stay relatively healthy, we could make a playoff run.

27-17 Niners.

  1. NJ49er says:

    6-10 for me Chuck.
I’ll be happy to see us LOOK competitive at this point.
Happier yet, not to see, or HEAR, a thing about Jed, or Paraag.
Let Shanny and Lynch do what they’re being paid to do.
Play football. Manage football matters and, do it without expectations.
I would love to see 1 win against Seattle, if that’s not too much to ask?

  2. Flavor says:

9 wins? Wow, I’d like to know the route you took to get to that number. But I am definitely excited to watch the game today and excitement can go a long way. Apparently it goes all the way to 9 wins. 🙂 ! I was gonna say 3 wins but I’m drinking the koolaide this morn so I’ll take a flyer on 4 wins. Let’s go!

  3. Winder says:

I think the Niners win this one too. No clue on the score though. But here it is anyway. 23-20

  4. unca_chuck says:

THe NFL is all about parity. The diff between wins and losses is thin. And yeah, I’m unreasonably optimistic. Why not?

    • Winder says:

The first game of the year is always full of hope and optimism. I honestly thought the Giants had a chance to win the division this spring. Nothing wrong with the 9-7 pick but that is gonna be real difficult with a total rebuild going.

      • Winder says:

Just to add to that. I have 86 FF teams and the 49ers defense is starting on all of them. That is all about hope and being a fan. All I got to say is they better play good. I got way to much time on my hands. Lol

  5. Winder says:

I think Kittle is gonna play today even though he’s on the injured list. Really looking to see what this kid can offer. He and Taylor just might be the best picks we made not named Foster.

  6. Nipper says:

A lot of rooks on this squad……..a journeyman QB and not much of a running game …… winning this first game will be a challenge. The coaches have to be better this season. So there is hope. Go team!

  7. Winder says:

so far out of the 8 teams playing this morning the visiting team scored first. The only exception is the jets game and there is no score. Kinda hard to believe that one.

  8. Lurker John says:

I’m going with 7-9 and hoping for more. This team may be more susceptible to injuries than most, due to their lack of depth. Today will be a good test against a good team. The D will be challenged to stop all the weapons the Panthers have. Christian McCaffrey’s first game.

    GO NINERS!

  9. unca_chuck says:

You’d think McCaffrey’s the 2nd coming of Jim Thorpe.

Yeah, we are thin. My hope is that the back end of the schedule is fairly weak and we can make some hay then.

    • Lurker John says:

He’s a pretty exciting talent. Watching him at the Combine was impressive, as if his Pac 12 career wasn’t enough. We’ll see how he holds up. I’m more concerned with Greg Olsen than anyone else [and Newton]. We’re going to need a pass rush. The Panthers figure to bounce back after a mediocre 2016.

  10. NJ49er says:

    Go 9ers
    Go Lions
    Go Pack
    Go Indy

  11. Lurker John says:

Raiders defeat the Titans, and rather handily. Rumors of the demise of their defense was premature evidently. They looked good and gave Mariota all kinds of problems. Lions with a chance to knock off the Cardinals.

  12. Lurker John says:

Of all the great athletes in all the sports in the world, I’ve always felt like NFL wideouts are among the best out there. The body control, speed, hands and leaping ability is amazing. Kenny Golladay just made a spectacular diving catch for a TD to pad the Lions’ lead. 28-17 Lions with 4:13 to go.

  13. Lurker John says:

    Pick 6! Bye, bye Cardinals!

  14. unca_chuck says:

Palmer looking like Palmer. 3 picks. AZ down big.

  15. Lurker John says:

Supposedly, the NFL is easing up on penalizing endzone celebrations this year, which they should. Stupid penalties and anything they can do to reduce the number of flags is OK by me.

  16. unca_chuck says:

Scott Tolzein flails a duck for a Ram pick 6.

  17. Lurker John says:

    Scott Tolzien. lol

  18. unca_chuck says:

Panthers are all over the place. Hard to gauge what they do this year. Even with Kuekly their defense was mediocre last year.

  19. Lurker John says:

So Tolzien bounces back and looks like the second coming of Johnny Unitas.

  20. unca_chuck says:

Well, nice start by the D. Set the edge and didn’t let Cam run.

  21. unca_chuck says:

Shit, Goodwin! Catch the damn ball!

  22. unca_chuck says:

Rodgers opens the GB game with a pick 6. Lots of pixcks today.

  23. unca_chuck says:

    Ahh, they took it away.

  24. Lurker John says:

    Right on the numbers Goodwin.

  25. unca_chuck says:

D is looking good so far. Reuben Foster with a nice drop into coverage.

  26. unca_chuck says:

    Pass pro looking good.

  27. unca_chuck says:

    Well, that got ugly fast.

  28. Lurker John says:

Foster down and it doesn’t look good. That didn’t take long.

  29. Lurker John says:

That looks like a broken leg.

  30. Flavor says:

    unFUCKINGbelievable. He’s on the cart.

  31. Lurker John says:

    1 fucking quarter

  32. unca_chuck says:

Jeebus. So much for this offense. Goodwin drops a pass and the rest falls apart.

  33. Irish Kevin says:

Here we go again, falling in love with the run!! 3rd and 22…gee I wonder what play is going to be called??? Maybe a passing play. Same shit different year!!

  34. Irish Kevin says:

If I am a defensive coordinator I am going to let you run up and down the field, as long as you don’t score(see the Niners here) I don’t give a shit about giving up 200+ yards on the ground!!

  35. Lurker John says:

Illegal formation is the Niners favorite penalty.

  36. Lurker John says:

Foster back! Limping but back! X-rays must’ve been negative.

  37. Lurker John says:

The OL is going to have to be shored up. Hoyer won’t stand a chance otherwise. They’ve had some runs but they look weak overall.

  38. Lurker John says:

Rams rolling behind Goff. I’m happy to see they went back to the classic white horns.

  39. Lurker John says:

Nice play by Johnson and Tartt there.

  40. Flavor says:

The OL was known as suspect and going against a DL like Carolina in the first game is a tough chore. Still, Hoyer has very little time to do anything and the one perfect ball he threw didn’t come close to getting caught by Goodwin. That was embarrassing. Foster out after one fucking quarter. Same old shit.

  41. unca_chuck says:

    Goodwin dropped a TD earlier.

  42. unca_chuck says:

Tartt makes up for his bad play with an unreal pick.

  43. Irish Kevin says:

Now we go back yo throwing passes that don’t get the Niners 1st downs, nice, one more time…same shit play calling different year

  44. Lurker John says:

Rusty on his accuracy, Spielman? Fucking guy didn’t have anyone within 10 yards of him. Newton looks like ass. Still no consistent pass rush. They’re lucky Newton has been off.

  45. zumiee says:

I’ll predict 5-11, and I feel like I’m being wildly optimistic.

  46. unca_chuck says:

Jesus. The anouncers are on glue, and we are lollygagging as time runs down.

  47. unca_chuck says:

Fuck. I have no idea what that was. What a clusterfuck.

  48. Lurker John says:

    The offense looks like shit.

  49. Flavor says:

are the niners aware that there’s a clock in football?

  50. unca_chuck says:

That made no fucking sense. We at least just gave them a FG.

  51. Lurker John says:

    Seahawks-Packer scoreless at the half.

  52. unca_chuck says:

There you go. Shanahan is going to learn a lot from this game.

  53. Winder says:

So much for winning this one. We have had some real bad luck with injuries the last few years. We will get it together before the season is over.

  54. Winder says:

    fuckig great. that hurt

  55. zumiee says:

What’s with all the empty seats? Hey, half-time is over.

  56. unca_chuck says:

There was no penalty on that play. Fuck Spielman. He’s an idiot.

  57. Lurker John says:

Getting ugly fast. The honeymoon is over!

  58. Lurker John says:

It’d be nice if we could actually score some points before the end of this one.

  59. Lurker John says:

    Touchdown Packers!

  60. unca_chuck says:

My concern about the O line is justified. We looked good early but are getting spanked.

The pass rush is also still MIA.

  61. Lurker John says:

Tom Brenneman sucks ass. Why he continues to be employed is beyond me.

  62. Lurker John says:

No pass rush whatsoever. No noise at all from the young stud D-linemen. About the only good news is they’re limiting the run game.

  63. Winder says:

It’s gonna be a long year. Both lines look terrible We can stop the run somewhat but no fucking pressure

  64. Flavor says:

Hoyer looks fucking awful. Less accurate than Kaep, if that’s possible.

    • Lurker John says:

I disagree. The pressure since the first part of the game has been all over him. The missed play to Garcon a minute ago was blatant holding. Goodwin dropped a perfect pass for a 50 yard gain and a first-and-goal. You can’t make good throws with dudes constantly in your face. Aaron Rodgers was struggling against Seattle for the same reason. As soon as he gets production, boom, TD. Hoyer is an accurate passer.

  65. Lurker John says:

    Points!

  66. unca_chuck says:

No love from the refs, that’s for sure. A hold on the 3rd down pass, and Shanny dropped about 30 f-bombs in the ensuing 30 seconds.

  67. unca_chuck says:

A good QB would have 35 on us at this point. Newton has sucked. Again, the pass rush is non-existent. Can’t get the defense off the field.

  68. unca_chuck says:

The team does look better in stretches, but both lines are not holding up.

  69. Lurker John says:

I can’t believe with all this talent the D-line isn’t better than this. Where’s Lynch? Is the Carolina O-line this fucking good?

  70. Winder says:

Looks like we are pretty much in deep…really surprised we look this bad.

  71. unca_chuck says:

Hah! That was not a penalty on Ray Ray. Fucking McCaffery! I love it. I’ve never heard more hype over a 5’11’ 200 lb guy in my life.

  72. unca_chuck says:

Lack of pass pro is dictating shit pass plays.

  73. Lurker John says:

    Our fucking guards suck.

  74. Winder says:

    take it in

  75. Lurker John says:

    Kittle looks like a baller.

  76. unca_chuck says:

Beadles is playing like shit. Greg Papa spent 3 hours jizzing himself over McCaffery. “They need to spy him with 2 guys!” Blah blah blah.

  77. Winder says:

    fuck me

  78. unca_chuck says:

    Gawwwwd. Dumb penalties.

  79. unca_chuck says:

    Yes!!! We needed that shit.

  80. unca_chuck says:

Wow. WTF is going on here?

  81. Lurker John says:

Totally missed Taylor there. Fuck Hoyer.

  82. Lurker John says:

    goddamnit

  83. unca_chuck says:

If Hoyer could have thrown the ball through Kuechly, he was open. Speilman is on glue.

  84. Lurker John says:

All game long Carolina gets a push with their down linemen. Niners? Nada.

  85. Flavor says:

pffftttt….Well, now I gotta stick with my ballsy 4 win prediction. If only there was a time machine…..

  86. unca_chuck says:

Fuck. We don’t have the line to make plays consistently. Blame Hoyer all you want, but he has no time and we aren’t running very well but for a couple plays.

  87. unca_chuck says:

Speilman is fucking blind. He’s has no idea what he’s looking at. Hyde gets tackled if he goes outside.

  88. Lurker John says:

Spielman’s right, Hyde goes outside and it’s 6. Other than that, he’s had a nice game.

  89. Flavor says:

I’m not blaming Hoyer, he is what he is. Nobody thought they’d be this bad today. They are very likely not scoring a td. At home. Embarrassing and pathetic.

  90. Flavor says:

SPielman gave Hoyer credit for not throwing the ball to avoid the penalty but he LOST THE DOWN and also lost the yardage he would have lost on the penalty. Had they got a penalty they would have replayed the down. Spielman is an idiot.

  91. Lurker John says:

If I was Shaw, I’d be in Palo Alto trying to figure out how USC kicked my ass last night, not glad-handing at a 49ers game.

  92. Irish Kevin says:

Where have I seen this before in side the 20 and can’t score. Start at their own 40 yard line and don’t get past the 50 yard line!!

  93. Flavor says:

Can you imagine how fucking hot it must be on the sunny side of the stadium? Man, it’s 94 at my house, it’s gotta be 110+ in the seats in Santa Clara

    • Lurker John says:

How do you design a billion dollar stadium and not take into account the heat on that side of the stadium? It’ll NEVER get better. Stoopid engineering.

    • 12th Man says:

All sides were sunny, it switched during the afternoon. Brutal.

  94. Lurker John says:

Lot of work to do and a Seahawks team that will be frothing at the mouth if the Pack holds on and wins.

  95. unca_chuck says:

That has a lot to do with the empty seats, Flav. It is fucking miserable in there and there isn’t a lick of shade. At least in the upper deck, you might catch a breeze.

Got to wonder what happens if fucking Goodwin catches the TD pass.

  96. unca_chuck says:

    Seattle isn’t scoring either.

  97. Flavor says:

    Hoyer’s been on 6 teams I think. That’s a lot.

  98. NJ49er says:

    The NYJ scored 12
    The Browns 18

    Look at the bright side…
The Bungals got blanked…And The Rams are in 1st place.
    Week one Gents.
No prizes to be handed out just yet.

  99. Flavor says:

I’m not down on the season yet, I know this will take some time and it was Shanny’s first game as HC. I just thought they’d play better than they did. They were pretty bad today.

  100. Winder says:

They will be getting better. We need to fix the lines. I don’t get out Dline it’s full of so called studs but they look like duds. You have to be able to press the fucking QB, it’s the name of the game.

    • Flavor says:

that doesn’t make sense to me either. The OL has a couple of journeymen, it’s not a surprise they are below average. But our D-Line is supposed to be good. I don’t get why they were literally complete no shows today.
