The Future’s So Bright . . .

I need a ladder to see the sun  . . .

Well, Vegas certainly isn’t giving us the love. They give us 5.5 as our win threshold. Down in the dregs of the NFL also-rans. Not that we haven’t been there before, but even this year is different than the pre-good times of the 2011 preseason. Vegas back then said 7.5 was the number.

I certainly thought they’d do better than that, but not the eventual 13-3 they became. Not too many people did. But back then we had a team full of talent,  a front office full of turmoil, and a brand new coaching staff. We had a bunch of players who were not even sure if they were going to see the field, let alone play, as the strike was staggering to its conclusion. So, what does that mean for this year? No one knows. we don’t have near the talent that the 2011 team had, we still have a front office full of turmoil, and again we have a new coaching staff.

But, how this year plays out remains the big butt. Can Chip’s offense withstand the scrutiny that appears to have taken the wind from its sails? Can Colin Kaepernick regain some of his previous glory? Can the defense get out of the basement it fell in to last year? Can the offensive block? Will any of Baalke’s recent draft picks, including 35 UDFA WRs and CBs, actually do anything? Can these new draft picks actually play?  Can the latest injured draft choice get healthy?

I think we will get at least a 2 game bump from last year. I don’t think the team can play much worse than it did with Jimmy T and the knothole gang coaching it did in 2015. The thing is, though, the team was two missed FGs from 3-13. Some say that would have been nice to get further up the draft board, but that is neither here nor there. This is about win totals for this year, not the spectre on meaningless wins late on a disaster of a season.

BUT, one could say that the 2 wins we did get late last year were gifts, and that our win total this year will likely be the same. And there’s a certain amount of truth to that. 5-11 is a distinct possibility given the strength of schedule, and the lack of WRs, and a front line in flux. Let alone a defensive corps that has had a revolving door at CB due to injuries and defections.

Still and all, I’m going fairly optimistic and saying 9-7. No playoffs.

I think the rest of the NFC West is coming back to us, and not improving.

Probably wrong but feels like the Seahawks are due a fall off the cliff.

  2. Winder says:

Without decent QB play we will be lucky to win 4 games. It’s just that there are so many bad teams that i think we will hit the 4 mark. And, I really am being optimistic.

    • Winder says:

At least the Giants are playing some real good ball. Two 1-0 shutouts in a row, that is something.

  3. unca_chuck says:

If gabbert wins the job I’ll go with 4 wins.

  4. unca_chuck says:

Yeah, I’m with you on that 12th. I think the Cawks are on their way down. AZ as well. Palmer was exposed in the playoffs. And Seattle’s offense isn’t scaring anyone anymore.

  5. unca_chuck says:

Dubs are playing defense like the 2015 49ers.

Defending the title is going to be VERY hard.

  6. rtfirefly says:

Jason Whitlock has been very vocal about his Thunder prediction.

F him. That’s my mantra today.

  7. Nipper says:

    Go Dubs! BLEEP the critics.

  8. unca_chuck says:

Yeha, both Green and Curry look like shit. Don’t know of they are hurt, tired, or just in a funk of epic proportions, but they play like they have been playing, and they are done.

  9. unca_chuck says:

That’s some funny shit in the playpen, RTF.

    I tip my cap.

    • Winder says:

I don’t see how Gabbert could beat out Kappy unless he is hurt or just isn’t trying anymore. I am at the point where my expectations are so low that this season just might turn out to be fun. Or not.

      • 12th man says:

Hey Winder, life is better with Niners football, win or lose! Off-season sux my left nut.
Kap is more talented than Gabbert hands down. Does he want it enough and can Chip devise an O that he can work inside of is the 64k question.

If Gabbert wins the job before the season we will know for sure.

      • Winder says:

        12th- I totally agree

  10. unca_chuck says:

Yeah, either we have an exiting dynamic offense or we punt 35 times a game.nthere ain’t much middle ground.

  11. Nipper says:

    Dubs not dead yet.

  12. unca_chuck says:

Nice rebound game. They have to play better on Monday to take game 6.

  13. unca_chuck says:

But they appear to be coming around. Green wasn’t awful, and he wasn’t spectacular, but he did fine despite the refs fucking with him. Westbrook regularly reacts worse than Green yet there’s no T.

Steph played like he usually plays and there you have it. The keys to success. Green and Curry back to themselves. OKC’s bench is playing WAY over their collective heads, and the crash is imminent.

  14. snarkk says:

Way early for wins predictions. With that schedule, tho’, it looks like attacking Everest wearing shorts without oxygen…

  15. rtfirefly says:

OK, do or die. Oakland, is one thing.,Okie See is quite another. A good night for Steph or Klay to put up 50.

  16. rtfirefly says:

They did it. Eleven down, five to go…

    Now back to Oakland.

  17. rtfirefly says:

41 for Klay, 29 for Steph

  18. Nipper says:

    GO DUBS Again.

  19. unca_chuck says:

31 for Steph. Hell of a game by Klay.

    Comment of the Day:

    PAUL
Bay Area is going to be renamed Title Town , we Have the Sharks in the Stanley Cup finals, The Warriors in the finals and its an even numbered year so The Giants should be getting another World Series . Anybody want to buy a football team ?

  26. rob says:

Again for what it’s worth here’s my take the state of our team.

Last year we won 5 games with Tomsula and a bargain bin coaching staff. This year we have a big name HC . IMO that alone is enough of an upgrade to net us 2 or 3 wins easy . With that we have ourselves a .500 team. Take the same players we had last year with a season of experience under their belts and add a pro bowl quality player to both lines. Now you’ve got a team worth keeping an eye on there so don’t sleep on your 2016 San Francisco 49ers.
Look Buckner is going to be a beast and Garnett is the real deal. Games are won up front and Baalke did right by drafting both. We had tons of picks so I have no problem with the trade up back into one to get Garnett.

    • rob says:

Long story short we’ve added a pro bowl quality starter to both lines and a big name head coach. Games are won up front so kudos to Baalke on this one.

      • rob says:

People are talking shit about our off season because we haven’t overspent on free agents. IMO Baalke has made precisely the right moves so far. Line play and coaching mean everything in this league and we’ve made big time upgrades to both. Now keep an eye out for players who can help us when June 1st cuts roll along. There’s some scuttlebutt out there that the J-e-t-s are going to release D-brick Ferguson this year. Now that would work out nicely for us. We’re in position to sign anyone we choose to at this point in the game. We’re now sitting in the catbird seat guys. (Thanks for that BTW to the much maligned Paraag Marathe.)

      • NJ49er says:

        D’Brick retired Rob.
        Don’t need him anyway.
Gotta get some Mo tho 😀
Young versatile 3-4 DE would be money well spent.

      • Winder says:

Hey rob- You workin for the Niners now? I think you are giving way to much credit to Baaalky. His drafts have been awful for the most part and that my friend is a fact.

  27. rtfirefly says:

100 days till Panthers @ Broncos… Tick, tock, tick, tock…

I’ll get around to football eventually. I’m having too much fun with the Warriors now.

  28. unca_chuck says:

Tell ya one thing, Trent Brown better play his way past fucking Pears. Otherwise we are going to be dogshit. Brown didn’t help things by showing up fat and stupid but what do you do?

Can’t believe we didn’t draft a tackle higher.

  29. unca_chuck says:

Sharkies might be caught like a deer in the headlights after trying so hard to get to the promised land. They let another one get away from them after starting yet another game on their heels and letting the Pens take control.

    • rob says:

Future free agent James Jones says he’d love to play for the niners . I hope we go after him.

  30. unca_chuck says:

    Great move.

    5 years ago . . .

Hey, I don’t know. We have a ton of bodies at WR but who knows what we really have? Bring him in to camp and see what happens.

  31. rtfirefly says:

Quinton Patton, our current #2 WR, and Pears are my two biggest question marks on offense. Doubters will add QB. It’s hard to think the offense will be anything special when the talent level is so low that guys like that are projected as starters. You can’t pin any of that on The Chipster.

    • rob says:

I’d offer Jones a two year deal. IMO he’s better than Patton and more reliable than Simpson . His experience gives him the edge over Ellington and the rest.

  32. rtfirefly says:

What a great game! After the interminable delay in the 3rd while the refs debated whether or not to call (a) technical(s), the Warriors blitzed ’em. It went from a 1 pt. back and forth game to 20 after that.

Here’s the thing: of the Warriors six leading scorers late into the 4th, none of them were named Steph or Klay!!!!! (I bet that’s the first time all year THAT’s happened.) The Cavs really shut the big two down, but the resf of the team was incredible.

    Thirteen down, three to go…
